The U.A. workshop. Like many, many other things about U.A., it completely blows other schools out of the water, including a high range of advanced equipment and the tools to produce some of the highest quality support gear around. It had almost everything a student could possibly want (and permits to get access to everything else on the grounds), including equipment that a certain student shouldn’t have expected to be allowed installed in his dorm room.
On this particular day, several hours after class, the lab happened to be mostly empty, with most of the students around engaged in their work. Anyone not sitting by the door would have heard the card reader beep, the door unlock, swung open, and… then close again, seemingly without admitting anyone.
Then the sound of a stool scraping along the floor, laboriously inching along. To anyone in the next row over, it might have looked like the stool was moving itself along, completely under its own power. Perhaps some student’s bizarre workshop project.
Anyone following along would see the stool stop at a particular workstation that oddly didn’t seem to get much use. The workstations were all assigned, and could sometimes be identified by the projects left out while in use, but this one was out of the way, separated from the rest of the other stations, with nothing ever left out on it.
And finally, to add to the mystery, a… black cat? In a school uniform? Jumped up onto the workstation, pulling a backpack off and laying it down, before starting to pull a random assortment of parts and pieces out and laying them out in a neat array. Well, he was mostly a cat, anyway. He still moved a little bit like a human and seemed to have two tiny opposable thumbs, but he definitely wasn’t in the main support track or its classes.

When Amaru was accepted to the support program he expected that the workshop area will be great, but even he was surprised about how awesome it really was. Sure, there were some high-tech gadgets that were useful and all, but the fact that there was even a fully equipped smithy was a really pleasant surprise. The young inventor just didn't expect something as "ancient" to be at this school. Amaru was spending a lot of time at the workshop. He didn't make any weapons yet which given the name he has chosen for himself, but he was crafting some basic tools, that he was going to use - the tools provided were great, but his were simply better. He couldn't believe it took him so long to actually start putting together a toolbelt of his own. Until now he was ok with just his hammer, but now he was finishing his other tool - a screwdriver! With his newest invention almost finished and his hammer in hand he entered a room just to see a black cat. A black cat who wore the school uniform. It was... unusual, granted, but being a mutant himself he quickly gathered it was just another student using this school facility. "Uhm... hey..." he greeted the cat student. Amaru didn't really want to bother... them but it would be rude not to say something. And it wasn't entirely common to meet someone he didn't know here. Usually, he was meeting just other support department students. And he would remember this one...

A closer inspection of the parts would reveal a variety of small circuit boards, electronic parts, a few motors, and some other doodads. The cat-like student spread them all out in a neat array, with the centerpiece being a small, round device with two wheels. Arranged next to the parts were a few tools, including a magnifying glass and a few pieces of testing equipment. After the rest of it had been laid out he took out a laptop and opened it up, loading a blown-up schematic to display on the screen. An even closer inspection would reveal a camera lens on the body of the wheeled device, whatever purpose the whole thing might serve.
Isamu’s ear twitched as he heard the door opening, turning his head to glance at who the newcomer was. Hmm. Someone he didn’t recognize. Not terribly surprising, as he did his best to avoid being here while there were other people about. A lot quieter that way, especially since a lot of the normal work involved clanging metal or power tools. Easier to focus on his work.
“Hello,” he said in reply. He put down the parts that he had been inspecting and then reached into his pocket, pulling out a workshop pass that went with the card reader outside, along with a matching student ID. “Before you even ask, yes, I’m allowed to be here, no, I’m not a support student, and no, you can’t pet me.” Best to get that last one out of the way early.

The cat student was working on something delicate, or at least it seemed that was by all the pats they had on the desk. But Amaru didn't usually stick his nose into other people projects. Well, cat projects neither. And this one was quite defensive about being here. Surprisingly so to be honest. "I never doubted you have the permission to be here... and while my classmates seem to be quite overprotective about this place I don't mind others coming here. I think I know most of the other support student's and I think I would remember you," he said, trying to sound calm and friendly. "And I would never do anything like that... it sounds incredibly demeaning... " for the shortest moment he sounded a bit defensive. Perhaps it was because Amaru was a mutant and knew how it felt to be different. "I am Izumi Amaru from 1-H." he introduced himself but didn't really say anything else. If the cat person was in the middle of work it would be rude to interrupt them. When someone was interrupting him he could get a bit... unpleasant to be around. If this student wanted a pause to talk, they would probably start a conversation other then the... almost warning. Then again it might be polite to offer help? "Can I help you? Not that I want to suggest you can't do it yourself... " darn, he was still terrible at talking to people. It was almost funny how he wasn't good at first impressions...

Isamu has learned, correctly or not, throughout his life that the only person who’s going to look out for himself is himself, and has a tendency to be… proactive in asserting his own rights.
“If that sounds demeaning that’s because it is. You’d be surprised how many people ask. And how many don’t,” grumbled the hero student. He put his badges away, before making a show of popping out his claws to inspect them briefly. “They learn pretty quick though.”
After a moment he put them away and gave Amaru an appraising glance, and then seemed to relax a little bit. “Suzuki Isamu. Class 1-A.” The hero course. Usually its students only showed up here to ask for the expertise of the support students. “Sorry, I’m just… I know a lot of hero students don’t come here to use the facilities for themselves. I’ve been getting a lot of strange looks. To be honest, I’d just do all my work in my dorm room, but the school wouldn’t let me install a fume hood, so I need to come here to do any soldering.”
“Thank you, but I think I’m okay,” he says at the offer of help, actually sounding grateful despite his earlier defensiveness. “I think I know what the problem is, I just need…” as he talked he reached into his backpack, felt around, then pulled his hand out to peer inside. “I need a voltimeter. Which I seem to have left in my dorm. I don’t suppose you know where one is in the lab, do you?”

Amaru wasn't all that surprised by what the students introducing himself as Isamu said. He had to chuckle a little when Isamu mentioned, that people quickly learned not to mess with him. "Yeah... I can imagine most people do that only once, before regretting it." Amaru liked cats and that came hand to hand with the knowledge what comes when you make a cat unhappy. Even regular cats had pretty sharp claws that could leave very itchy marks. "Well I can't really speak for others, but I admit freely that I am a bit jealous of the hero students. Let's say that support class wasn't my first choice. So I can imagine that seeing future heroes doing our job can be a bit... unpleasant." he said honestly. He didn't really mind that, but it was easy to think that others might. "We are allowed to install quite a few things at our rooms, support dorms are probably built for that kind of things? Still... it's good for tinkering, but nothing louder. I usually need to hit the anvil a bit... and they don't allow me to that either." no matter how much soundproofing there was the loud metal noises were just too much. "A voltmeter? Yeah... sure, it's somewhere around there." he knew where most things were, but since he worked only with his own energy he didn't need any measuring devices like that. But he at least suspected a general area. He disappeared in the next room for a minute or so. Before long he was back with a voltmeter in his arm. "Sorry, never used this thing... had to look around a bit." he placed in on the desk before the other student.

Isamu was busy dismantling the small device he had brought to work on, carefully removing some small screws with a screwdriver so he could get at the insides, with one ear turned towards Amaru to focus on what he was saying. He paused when he mentioned the jealousy factor, looking up to give the other student his full attention. “Really? Huh… You know, I hadn’t thought of it like that before… I’ll try to make sure I don’t flaunt my hero student status. Besides, I brought these skills with me from before U.A. I’m trying to keep them in practice because you never know when you’ll need to disarm a strange device.”
He returned to his device, working on the next screw. “Yeah, I still have a desk where I can work on schematics and assembling simpler devices, or protype things, but they insisted some things be done in a more controlled environment.” He looked up again when the other student mentioned the anvil. “Anvil, huh? I take it you do metalworking of some kind? I’ve always been interested in trying that out, but never had the chance to.” Plus there’s some… logistical issues. “You specialize in anything in particular?” He didn’t anticipate needing swords or armor, but you never know what other surprising things you may be able to take advantage of in the future.
Isamu kept working on the device, and by the time Amaru returned the inner circuit board had been placed on the countertop with a magnifying lens positioned over it. “Ahh, thank you!” He took the voltmeter and started setting it up. “You’ve saved me a very long trip back to my dorms to get mine.”

Amaru shrugged a little. "Well, it was my fault that I didn't get into the hero course, nobody else's. So don't let that limit you in any way. I will get over it... hopefully." there was some bitterness in his voice, but he was angry only at himself, nobody else. The last thing he wanted was to make someone feel any discomfort over that. "I can do a lot of things, even machines but my specialty is making nearly indestructible weapons attuned to hero's quirk. It's a bit more difficult than that, but basically, the weapon should work well in tandem with the quirk. For example, this is my hammer..." he pulled out the hammer he had attached to his belt. "Since my quirk is to imbue things with energy I attuned this thing to help me imbue things with energy... ok that probably didn't really explain it well. Hmmm... let me show you." he said and picked some sort of diode between two fingers. After a moment the diode starting to glow and he put it on the desk before Isamu. It remained glowing even after he let go. "I am also a battery as you just saw." he smiled carelessly. It was a bit of a parlor trick, but it served well to illustrate the most basic element of his powers but also the most... tangible. "It's always handy to have someone around to help you. This place can be... confusing. There is pretty much everything, but you need to find it first. Apparently, after buying all this fancy stuff there was no money in the badged for stickers..."

Isamu thought about saying something more about getting into hero track versus support track, but decided to hold his tongue. There was likely nothing he could say that would make the other student feel better, and a lot he could say to make him feel worse, or even insulted. He also briefly thought about mentioning that there were chances for students to move up to hero track… but based on all of the rumors and talk he had been hearing, the support students were plenty aware of that fact, especially with Fu having dropped out into General Studies recently.
“Machines, huh? Hmm.” Depending on what kind of machines, that could come in handy later. The talk about imbuing weapons, however, got him to look up from his examination of the circuit board. “Making weapons attuned to a quirk? That’s a new one to me. Can you elaborate?” He already had his weapon, and some ideas for future improvements, so he didn’t need a new one, really. It was designed to work around his quirk, in that it worked with his body type, but didn’t necessarily help him be a cat better, but if there was an improvement he could make to it, he should at least look into it. He pushed the lens away and turned fully towards the other student once he began his demonstration, ears perked and facing forwards.
“Interesting…” He grabbed the voltmeter and jumped over to where the diode was, hooking it up to read the charge on it. “How long do you typically imbue a charge for? What’s the maximum capacity of the charge you can imbue? And you said this was only one aspect of your powers, correct?”
“I’m mostly familiar with all of the items I use regularly, but there’s quite a bit of equipment here that isn’t suited to my skills that I try to leave alone.”

Amaru knew that there was still chance he might get into the hero course and it was the endgame right now, but since he barely started at the school he knew it will take some time. And since he failed the last time during the entrance exam the next time might be his only chance. He wasn't going to let it slip past him! "I can tinker up anything, it's what I do. Well, not everything everything, but close to everything." he did create some nice pieces before. "Ok... let's say that we have a guy, that can turn invisible. If I attune the weapon for him, it will be able to turn invisible with him. Or let's say some other fellow can change shapes... well, in theory, I should be able to attune a piece of armor to fit any new form he might take." he tried to give some relevant examples. "Plus once I imbue an item it gets incredibly durable. I doubt any student in this school would be able to even scratch my hammer for example," he added "I can't really tell you the specifics, not that I don't want to, but I don't really do the science. I can power up anything the size of an average washing machine or imbue anything that a normal person might wear or use. So you won't see me imbue a tank or power up a building. And yeah, I can power things like a battery, I can imbue an item to make it more durable and well... better. Or I can attune an item to work with someone's quirk like the examples I gave you." he explained

Isamu pulled out his cell phone, and quickly took down some notes and measurements from the charged-up component. He was paying attention to the other student, indicated by an area being swiveled in his direction, but this was something that was too tantalizing to ignore for the moment. “So attunement… basically makes the gear in question more.. adaptable? Interesting… An ability like that seems like it’d be heavily sought after from the support companies. I’m wagering it’s not mass produceable, but a lot of support items are bespoke anyway,” he mused to himself. “The enhanced durability sounds generally useful, though…”
He turned to the other student. “Not that I mean to impose on your time, but I’m just trying to understand the workings of your quirk better. Is there anything your attunement ability would do for my quirk? Actually… hang on just a moment. I think my backup gloves are here. I’ll be right back.” He dropped to the floor and vanished into the storage area, emerging a few moments later hauling a briefcase and leaping back up onto the counter with it. He unlocked it, revealing a pair of gloves with metal studs embedded across the knuckles. “I call these tazer gloves. These—” he indicated the studs “—deliver an electric charge to whatever I strike. Any idea what your attunement process might do for them?”
He pulled one out of the case, slipping it on to give an idea of the form and fit, making a few experimental punches at the air. Nothing happens, as he’s left them off—safety first, after all. “I didn’t construct them, but they were based on my designs,” he adds.

"Yeah... it takes a lot of time to attune an item to a user. It's also very, very exhausting. But the result is usually worth it. Though since it's attuned to a specific person and their power it can effectively be used only by them." he explained. He hoped that once he finishes this school he might create gear for the biggest heroes out there. Or preferably become the biggest hero out there, but that wasn't really the point right now. "That's not a problem. One day selling gear might be my job... and I don't expect my customers to buy items they don't understand. Not to mention I have actually far more free time than most people." he said though he didn't explain why it was. "I have no idea what your quirk is. I mean... I can see that it's probably some mutation quirk but I have no idea what it does." there was no ill tone in what he said but he knew some were careful about calling someone a mutant. When it came to the gloves there were several things that came to mind, but without knowing the exact abilities of his quirk he couldn't be very specific. "While I can attune previously made items I don't usually do it since the result might be a tad unpredictable. Attunement works best with items that I craft. The best I could do with these is to imbue them, making them much more durable and made whatever power source they have obsolete... or redundant really... "

“My quirk is exactly what you think it is. It’s a mutation quirk called ‘Cat.’ I can basically do everything a cat can do. See in the dark, jump really high, all of that.” He pulled the single glove off and put it back in the case. “Though I’m not looking to carry conventional weapons… Both due to size concerns as well as the need for me to keep all four paws free. That’s why I designed the gloves. I have given some consideration to trying to find some armor material that’s durable but lightweight enough not to hinder my movements, though… But I still think relying on agility and reflexes will be my main defense.”
He listened carefully to Amaru’s description of what he could attune or imbue, nodding along as he noted that attunement might be difficult in this instance. “I see… I suppose that makes sense. If you construct the item yourself you know how best to ensure that it does what you want when you get to the attunement phase… How long does imbuing an item take, and what’s required for that? Enhancing the power source in the gloves could open up some interesting possibilities…” He snapped the case shut and leapt over to his workspace, depositing it there before jumping effortlessly back to grab the voltmeter. “My apologies if I’m asking too many questions. If you have something else you need to be doing, please, feel free. I just like investigating ideas for new gear.” Since I’ll be needing a lot of it in the future.

"That certainly does sounds useful. Seeing in the dark sounds like something I could certainly use. Then again I probably should be able to modify my goggles to provide such function... why didn't I do it yet? Huh... thanks for the idea!" he picked up a notebook and hastily scratched something into it. "I can imbue most of the materials to make them more durable and while it works best with metals I should be able to make some lightweight material be a bit better too. I tried it only a few times - like imbuing a shirt so it won't tear during a football match..." perhaps there could be a lightweight material that could be imbued to serve as light armor. "As I said, I really have a lot of time. I don't sleep you see. Like not at all. I can't. So that gives me 8 hours a day to do what I need so you really don't have to worry about that. So ask all the questions you need. Imbuing an item is something I can do like that." he snapped his finger in the air. "Attunement is a different story. It takes a better part of a day and it's pretty much all I can do that day. But the results should be worth it," the sad truth was that not counting his own hammer he really didn't attune anything for anyone yet. Most of the students here preferred to ask older students for help and there was no reason to create weapons in the orphanage...

“Technically there still needs to be some illumination… but not very much.” He perked an ear up when the other student mentioned modifying his goggles, jumping back to his workstation and bringing his laptop back over, pulling up a file full of schematics and flipping through it. “Actually, I’m glad you mentioned goggles. I’ve been meaning to put in a request for my costume. Maybe you could help?”
He settled on a diagram of a pair of goggles, though they deviated a bit from the standard ‘human’ design. The lenses were far wider, almost wrapping onto the side of Isamu’s head, with the thinnest of frames around the edge to provide cushioning and to maximize his visible field of view. The straps attached directly to the lenses, and there were notes on the requirements for the lenses, namely that they help to block the bright flashes of light, and that they be one-way, hiding his eyes from sight while still allowing him to see. Along with the almost unnecessary note that they should be durable to avoid breaking and risking damage to his eyes. “I figure these will allow me to use my flashbangs more safely and make me just a little bit less visible in the dark.”
He grunted a little when Amaru mentioned not needing to sleep. “I would love to be able to worry about my sleep schedule way less than I have to now.” Being a nocturnal creature on a diurnal shift was… a bit maddening, sometimes.
He pulled up a request form on his laptop and quickly filled it out, printing both it and the schematic on a wi-fi printer tucked into the corner of the room. “Do you mind if I leave that request with you? I can submit it to the teacher tomorrow if you’d rather I did that.”
