Someone inexperienced, someone new to fighting against crime and injustice and in rescuing innocents, might have said that an urban environment was best. Cities always had the highest crime-rates, were where those who wished to be heroes could make their mark, be noticed by the populace. Yet, that wasn’t quite right. Accidents, disasters and crises occurred anywhere and everywhere.[break][break] Within cities and within villages. Upon land and beneath the sea. There was no one “optimal” environment. Those who chose to become heroes, those children who would graduate from U.A. Academy, needed to be familiar with all forms of disasters.[break][break] The towering beams of steel, of concrete buildings, of pluming steam and churning machinery would do for the class of sixteen-year-olds that Tsumiki meant to teach though, would do for the simulation that he had planned. To test their capability.[break][break] It was just short of noon, and the day was particularly humid with not a speck of cloud marring the brilliance of the blue sky, the heat was thick, oppressive and sticky. Consequently, the grittiness of Ground Gamma was a rather miserable location to spend the afternoon, for even beneath the shadows thrown by the towering steel constructs there was little coolness. Against the monochrome, against the grime, the tall figure that was the academy’s search-and-rescue instructor seemed out of place, stark. His tall figure all white-and-blue-and-silver, due to the lack of colour to his skin, his long ashen hair. The telling look of his heroic attire, with its draping cloth and strange gemstones. And the silver of his eyes, which watched the gathering students with utter apathy.[break][break] Making no attempt to corral them, to demand their silence and their attention. This wasn’t their homeroom, after all. As far as Tsumiki was concerned the consequences of not paying attention would be completely on them.[break][break] ”Class 1-A.” He hadn’t immediately spoken, allowing students to talk amongst themselves, to marvel or complain about their scenery. When he did, his baritone words were clipped, as cool and distant as his visage. ”All of you are the best, the most promising of those newly welcomed into this academy. And the expectations for you all not just to succeed but to impress are staggering.” He hadn’t posed his words as question but as a statement, as facts. ”My name is Tsumiki Toriyama – you may address me as either Toriyama-sensei or as Gabriel-sensei, whichever you prefer. I will be teaching you the rescue component of heroism.” He paused, and allowed his pale hues to drift from one face to the next, the apathy of his expression unshifting. ”Please, do not disappoint my expectations.”[break][break] ”If you thought that as a hero the majority of your time will be spent in combat, clashing against criminals, then let me correct you now on that misassumption. Most of you, should you make it into the ranks of sidekicks, will find yourselves responding to aftermaths – of natural disasters, of dangerous accidents, of out-of-control and malicious usage of quirks. Where you will have to rescue and remove people from those situations, to protect them and yourselves.”[break][break] ”Now, who out of you,” Tsumiki asked, ”can tell me the most valuable skill that you can have for rescuing someone?”

Chiura's hand shot into the air -- though the nerves that accompanied it were clear to all who watched as subtle tremors shook the fingers and the limb that they were attached to.
"W-Well," she exclaimed in her best attempt at a clear and confident voice. "Quirks and abilities are all well and good, but -- well, the most important part of rescuing someone is the demeanor, right? Giving them the hope that they need to pull through once things calm down."
It was a very idealistic answer -- but it was one that Chiura believed in very much. It couldn't just be the matter of having the best quirk, right? Pro heroes were more than that. To Chiura, bedside manner (or disaster-side manner, as the case so often was) was a critical component of heroism. Being the strongest or the fastest was a huge boon, of course -- but Chiura knew that victims of disasters and catastrophes, ultimately, weren't too picky about the quirks of their saviors.

Ryus first real lesson as a member of class 1-A. To say he was excited would be an understatement. He was exstatic, full of energy and rearing to go and show his stuff! He wasn't really excited for combat lessons like many new students who came to U.A were. Right now he was just happy that he'd be in a lesson where he'd finally be able to use his quirk outside of designated training areas in a real environment he might encounter as a hero. Tall concrete skyscrapers and humming machines surrounded him, with damp air and warm sunlight blanketing the whole area. To most people they might find it rather miserable. What with it being so humid. But Ryu was a cold blooded creature, and to maintain his body heat he had to keep warm. And right now the natural warmth of the sun and moistness of the air was just what he needed. He breathed in deeply, a smile on his face. Yes, this was perfect.[break][break]
His eyes trailed down to the instructor as the man began to speak. He introduced himself and then began to speak about rescuing people, and saying that how, as heroes, they would be doing more of that than actually battling villains. Ryu knew that was only half-true. There were some heroes that were very well suited to rescue missions who more-or-less exclusively that, however on the other side of that coin there were also heroes who specialized exclusively in combat due to the nature of their quirks and weren't really useful in rescue training. But Ryu could see the benefits of being trained in both situations.[break][break]
The instructor asked what the students thought the most important skill of being a rescue hero was. Ryu thought for a moment before Chiura, the snake girl he'd met before, spoke up. Manners, huh? A hopeful answer, Ryu thought. And useful, he supposed. But Ryu was a more practical person and thought of a more practical answer. He'd raise his hand, and when the instructor called on him he'd speak up. "Thinking on your feet." He'd begin. "There's no telling what kind of situation a Hero will have to go into to rescue someone. It could be a cave collapse or a fire or a flood... a Hero needs to be able to think on their feet to rescue as many as possible." After all, your bed-side manners could be the best in the world. But if you couldn't rescue anyone then what was the point?

Jun was there in his hero costume, with some new comers to the class. He hadn't really introduced himself to them, though not because he was anti-social...just that he was lazy as hell and didn't go out of his way to meet them. After an introduction, both on the course and himself, the teacher asked about the most important trait to save people in a disaster situation. Chiura said manners. Sure, that was important, to inspire hope, but that wasn't the only thing. Ryu mentioned thinking on your feet. That was something Jun absolutely agreed with. But there was something more there. He would also raise his hand. When called, he added on to Ryu's answer. "I'd like to add on to Ryu-kun's answer. Cooperation. With both other heroes and those more familiar with disaster rescue. Disaster rescue is often a team effort. If you can't work well with others, you're basically useless. Even f you dislike another hero or disaster worker, you need to be able to put aside your emotions and do what's best for the victims."
You can think on your feet all day long, but a lot of times, it takes a team of heroes to actually get anything done. No one is a one man army and can rescue everyone. You get a group with even a mediocre amount of teamwork, they can do well to rescue a great deal more people than a group with amazing quirks but horrendous cooperation. A combination of thinking on their feet, plus cooperation and teamwork, would win the day most times in Jun's opinion.

[attr="class","nameBody"] ”Demeanour is important when conducting a rescue. As is a willingness and the ability to work alongside others,” Tsumiki replied, acknowledging the noticeably nervous Chiura Yutsuko and the much calmer Jun Tomoshibi with the coolness of his stare. ”However,” he added, with a distinct pause, ”what I asked for was what skill is most valuable.”[break][break] He then spared his gaze to the pale figure of Ryu Sato, Tsumiki didn’t smile or soften his expression but his stare lingered, instead of the briefest acknowledgement that he had paid to the other two. ”Cleverness. Adaptability. Thinking.”<p> ”As Sato-san said, there is much unpredictability that comes with heroism. Telling a civilian that everything if fine with a smile will not keep either of you alive if you’re more preoccupied with them and yourself and not your surroundings. Likewise, you should never rely on another to think for or make decisions for you.”[break][break] Moving a hand, Tsumiki reached beneath the draping pale cloth of one of his sleeves, withdrawing a rectangular alarm clock. ”I would suggest that you all keep that in mind.”[break][break] ”Now, this is a large area so you will have an hour in which to locate all thirty of these alarms, which have been hidden in the area. I will be grading you by how many each of you collects at the end of the hour. However, each alarm contains a mechanism that if you don’t handle it with care will trigger an explosion – not all explosions are the same. Triggering an explosion,” Tsumiki paused once again, though this time he moved his stare to each student gathered before him, pointedly. ”Any explosion, will result in my failing you.”[break][break] ”There are loudspeakers fitted throughout the area, when there are fifteen minutes remaining I will let you know. Then again at ten, then at five and then once more when the hour is up.”[break][break] Tsumiki didn’t offer the option for any questions to be asked. They were 1-A, he wasn’t going to hold their hands any further than helping them to keep track of their count-down. Instead, he pressed a button on the alarm that he was holding, then looked over his class with cool apathy. ”Now begin.”

[attr="class","sinner"] [attr="class","sinner1"] [attr="class","sinback"] [attr="class","sinnert"] The day after his conversation with Isamu he found himself prior to leaving for his coop just... Once again resting an elbow on the edge of the very same window peering into a different sky. A similar blue but the fluffy clouds were all different. Being pushed along the skyline whimsically marking the passage of time. Homeroom lasted only a small portion of the morning and today in particular was a different lesson from a teacher that he hadn't really had a chance to talk with yet. Toriyama-sensei for Search and Rescue training. It was a cool thing to look forward to, since a lot of their classes were more about fighting Villains. In essence Heroism was all of these things, and he definitely recognized the importance of rescues and saving people, not only the fighting. In truth that's what he often found himself doing in most fights he wasn't supposed to be in. Dashing about defending others from the attacks of Villains. Fu from henchmen, Taka from Meka-sensei, the list went on a little further but for the amount of time he'd been in UA it became apparent that at his current capabilities he couldn't do both. He naturally gravitated towards not wanting people to get hurt as opposed to fighting Villains which I suppose spoke a little for his character. Still, he did want to be able to fight Villains too. Not out of a desire to fight or anything competitive like that, but more so allowing justice to prevail. Disabling those that would harm others, so on and so forth. That's specifically why one hour later he was lined up with other 1-A students in front of Toriyama-sensei. He'd been there from the start and when asked the initial question his response would've been outside of the box and ambitious to say the least. Yet with three others responding before he put his wording together with more concise things he realized he didn't have all that much to add and Toriyama-sensei went ahead after those several responses. In truth he didn't really need to add anything. He could say this and that but in his mind a pro hero couldn't completely lack a skill. They needed the demeanour, the finesse, the clever thinking, the speed, cooperation. Every answer that a person could potentially give was something that was definitely necessary in rescuing a person. Folding his arms and allowing the teacher to continue speaking he'd get the rest of the brief. He'd gotten the crash course understanding of most UA lessons. It was five percent lesson and ninety five percent learning from mistakes and getting pseudo hands on experience. Could never truly be that without the ever present threat of expulsion or instantaneous failure, it was part of UA's charm. Most of the teachers just said that as an extreme form of a pushing motivation, you mess up and everything you've worked up for is gone. Most usually don't actually mean that deep down because they're heroic people and well, unless someone really deserves it bringing that mallet down is something most don't want. Still, he had no intentions of abusing something like that. It was his full plan to give this everything he got. So when Toriyama-sensei told them to start he began in a curious way. Despite them being graded on how many points they got making it seem competitive, he seemingly had no care to compete. Instead he spoke up. " Yutsuko-san, you should be able to weave around the metal beams fast right and get in nooks and crannies? Head North-west if you can please." Looking over towards Sato he'd speak up next, " Sato-san, uhm... We've never actually met aha. It's my first class with you so uh... Surprise us I guess?" Finally he looked over towards Jun. Perhaps this one came with the most hesitation as he tried to think of a way to apply Juns quirk. It was extremely offensive in nature. Then his eyes widened for a moment. " Tomoshibi-san, cover as much ground as you can. If you find a group of alarms that you don't think you can handle yourself you can use your quirk. Shoot it upwards as a beacon and I'll run over there as fast as I can to help. As for me? I'll cover as much ground as I can straight ahead. I can likely transport one or two safely at a time, anyways, good luck everyone!" None of them needed to heed his instructions, not at all if they didn't explicitly want too. Regardless he was off. Sprinting forward he accelerated to an incredibly fast speed, covering distance quickly as he went through the urban jungle. The environment posed trouble as well and slowed him down, something he definitely made a mental note on to work on now. The countless smooth pipes meant he needed precision when jumping between them since if he didn't jump while sprinting his speed would be meaningless as he'd have to stop again and again to awkwardly make his way over pipes. There was definitely some skill-building to be done there, for the most part his good instincts and confidence gave him success but it was inevitable that from time to time he'd slip on a pipe and crash only to pick himself up to keep on going. He still managed to maintain an impressive speed of thirty miles per hour. Made the crashes all the harder on him, though. He looked out for anything which stood out and even some of the things that didn't. Looking in places one might not expect, eyeing for anything that looked like the smoke of a scene or something. One way or another he was putting his best foot forward. word count here ● @taghere ● notes here [attr="class","sinner2"] [attr="class","sinnerlyric"]ANTHEM FOR THE PEOPLE [newclass=.cred]text-align:center;font-size:6pt;color:rgb(132, 132, 132);letter-spacing:1px;font-family:verdana;margin-top:5px;[/newclass] [newclass=.cred a]color:rgb(132, 132, 132);font-size:6pt;letter-spacing:1px;font-family:verdana;[/newclass] [newclass=.sinner]width:420px;height:500px;background:#fcfcfc;padding:10px;border:1px solid #f0f0f0;[/newclass] [newclass=.sinner1]width:415px;height:495px;margin-top:2px;border:1px solid #f0f0f0;overflow:hidden;[/newclass] [newclass=.sinner2]width:415px;height:495px;float:center;margin-top:-390px;background: url(http://p2.i.ntere.st/cac2dde43e9ed972a1506a77cc406d91_480.jpg);transition: 0.9s ease-in-out;transition-delay:1s;[/newclass] [newclass=.sinner:hover .sinner2]margin-left:-850px;transition: 0.9s ease-in-out[/newclass] [newclass=.sinnerlyric]width:330px;padding-top:405px;text-shadow:#333 1px 1px;font-family:georgia;font-size:25px;text-transform:uppercase;color:#fcfcfc;padding-bottom:5px;color:#fcfcfc[/newclass] [newclass=.sinnerlyric span]font-size:108%[/newclass] [newclass=.sinback]width:400px;height:380px;margin-top:8px;background-color:#fcfcfc[/newclass] [newclass=.sinnert]width:400px;height:465px;margin-top:10px;overflow:auto;text-align:justify;font-family:verdana;font-size:10px;padding:2px;color:#666;background-color:#fcfcfc;line-height:13px;opacity:0;transition:0.8s ease-in-out;transition-delay:0.9s;[/newclass] [newclass=.sinnert span]color:#df444b;[/newclass] [newclass=.sinnert b]color:#555;[/newclass] [newclass=.sinner:hover .sinnert]opacity:1;transition:0.8s ease-in-out;transition-delay:0.9s;[/newclass] [newclass=.sinnert::-webkit-scrollbar-thumb:vertical]border:2px solid #fcfcfc; background-color:#aaa;[/newclass] [newclass=.sinnert::-webkit-scrollbar-thumb:horizontal]background-color:#fcfcfc; border:1px solid #fcfcfc;[/newclass] [newclass=.sinnert::-webkit-scrollbar]width:5px; height:5px;background-color:#fcfcfc; border:1px solid #fcfcfc;[/newclass]

Isamu hated days like these. True to the stereotype, he enjoyed the occasional nap in a warm sunbeam, but the humidity itself was another matter. Muggy air had a tendency to get everywhere, and he had a lot of ‘everywhere’ thanks to all of his fur. Still, today was search and rescue training, and he wouldn’t let a little dampness deter him. After all, he was already planning for this to be one of his areas of focus in his career, and he was eager to put his skills to the test.
After getting dressed in his hero gear and making his way to the meeting site he waited for the instructor to start the class, already at attention when he finally started to speak.
Eesh. Like he needed a reminder of the enormous pressure that was on them.
The most important skill, huh? Somehow he didn’t think his teacher was looking for ‘a keen sense of smell’, but something more broadly applicable. The problem with this sort of question, though, was there could be any number of ‘right’ answers, and to answer it correctly meant reading the teacher’s mind. Still, no sense not trying to give at least one answer that might do.
… Only Chiura got to his chosen answer first. Hmm.
He listened to the other responses his classmates gave, and… they were all perfectly good answers. Really you couldn’t pick any single best answer for a question like this. Except for the one the instructor had in mind, of course, which Sato-san had managed to guess.
He listened to the teacher give his preferred answer and then explain the challenge set before them. And by luck, it was something that could test all of his skills. He could use his nose to track down either the scent of their teacher placing the alarms or the smell of the alarms themselves, and he knew how to work with mechanical or electronic devices, so disarming the alarms should be a cinch. And his costume had some of the tools he would need to do the disarming.
… Hopefully the ‘explosions’ were just… confetti bombs or something like that.
Regardless, as soon as the instructor tapped the alarm to start the countdown he started his own countdown on his gauntlet, and pulled up a mapping app to try and keep track of things in the area. “Right, we should try to be methodical about things instead of searching willy nilly. I’ll start searching in this direction. I’ve got my tools with me, so come find me if you find any tricky mechanisms you can’t figure out.”
Of course… there was one little thing to take care of just in case someone tried to be clever. He approached the teacher, eyeing the alarm clock he was holding. “Are we to consider that one of the alarms that need to be disarmed or just a control device?” Not really a question you’d get to ask a villain during a disaster situation, of course… but it was probably best to ask before making plans to attack a ‘villain’ and ‘disarm’ them if you were in a classroom setting.
After getting his answer, and assuming he didn’t provoke any retaliatory strikes, Isamu would head off in a separate direction, sniffing about for both the scent of electronics and the teacher’s scent. He wasn’t particularly fast like Daiki, but unlike most of the others save maybe Chiura, his size meant that he could thoroughly search a building, getting into all of its nooks and crannies, and his jumping and balance meant he could eventually make his way through every part of a building. And so he went, taking it one building at a time, methodically spiraling outwards and tracking his progress on his map.

Chiura locked up. Alarms? Bombs?! Instant failure?! Terror gripped at her sternum. She had always known that something like this would come -- it was the nature of U.A., after all, and something that firmly set it apart from its competition. But now that it had arrived -- the first of many proverbial do-or-die moments, where will and energy and conviction amounted to a mere nothing in the face of unadulterated talent and skill -- Chiura couldn't move.
She would say that she couldn't feel her legs, but -- well. That was normal.
She had to convince herself to move. This was her opportunity! This was the chance to prove that all of this hadn't been a mistake. And yet, she couldn't even begin to think of where to begin, let alone how to succeed in this particular challenge. She had a quirk, and she had the book smarts, but putting it all into practice seemed... Impossible.
Chiura wilted. She was going to fail her first real challenge! This had all been for nothing! What could a girl like her-- She blinked, her long, scale-covered ears twitching as they caught wind of her name, respectfully uttered by the muscular boy from the track. Chiura's jaw dropped. Satou-san had been the one she had seen at the track that day; the one who had seemed more like a pro hero than a real student with the way he was racing around the track. And he was talking to her?
...He was right, though. With the way the simulation was laid out, there would be places to the Northwest that Chiura was uniquely suited to entering and navigating. Her tail could help her reach all sorts of places that most people couldn't, and its dexterity and sensitivity would allow her to navigate without risking setting anything off by accident. How had he thought of such an applicatoin of her quirk when she herself hadn't even been able to get past square one?!
It doesn't matter, she thought to herself. Far be it from her to look a gift horse in the mouth; she snapped out of her stupor, affording the boy a nod. "Right! I'll do that, she called out, her expression of fear melting away into stern conviction. He had been right -- this was something she could excel at! "Thank you, Satou-san! I won't let you down!" Without another word, she propelled herself towards the northwest, her massive tail undulating wildly as she charged forwards at a brisk pace.
I won't let myself down. I can do this!

In the back of the crowd, a blue haired mushroomy girl kept away from the front, blinking lazily as the teacher before them, some guy looking like he dropped straight outta heaven, asked what was the most valuable skill in saving someone. Mimi sighed softly when people gave their emotion-pumped answers, like smiling and saying everything will be fine, or feet thinking, or whatever. Mimiya was completely new to the class, and thus didn't say anything as not to single herself out, Fluffy sitting it's slim stalk on her shoulder as she couldn't help but quietly cringe at the answers. Hope and cooperation were all great and stuff, but... They wouldn't help in all situations, and thus the girl tipped her head down, mouthing, "Planning and Adaptability..."
As Toriyama-sensei answered the question, she remained silent as she listened to the briefing on what the lesson was, something about "bombs" being hidden about the mock city, completion needed in 60 minutes, if handled improperly said "bombs" will explode. Mimi took UA to not be a completely ruthless organization, so such an "explosion" would likely be with paint or confetti, perhaps something to quickly identify who fails the assignment; she greatly doubted it would be actual fiery explosives. Less of a worry for her, likely the only one currently present who is greatly, greatly allergic to fire. No reason to be clutzy with the explosives, regardless. Failing would be a massive pain.
Mimi would already be leaving the grouping of students as she heard some wind here or there of instruction or loose teamwork, but the blue haired girl didn't really adhere to any form of yell outs. She already had her own plan in her mind, muddling over the amount of explosives, how many she should get, etc. She wanted to give everyone a shot at finding them, 30 explosives, 25 students. Grabbing 1 or 2 would suffice, likely an average of 3-5 would end up exploding on other students. She hopped through an entrance into one of the buildings, mildly surprised nobody had seemed to go inside any of them yet, looking to Fluffy,
"Search the room, bud. If you find anything strange looking, talk to me. No touching."
The little mushroom friend did a salute of sorts, and began floating around the building, Mimi very carefully doing the same.

Things ramped up quick. The teacher seemed acknowledge that Ryus answer was the correct one, what the gaze lingering on him and then elaborating further on what he had said. Ryu smiled, rather proud of himself. Making a good first impression with your teachers was important and Ryu wanted to prove that he had earned his way into this school just like any of the other students here. And he'd made an excellent first step so far. But he couldn't stop yet. This was a lesson, after all. And a chance to show off their quirks. From what Toriyama-sensei had explained there would be bombs planted at various points around the city. The students were tasked with collecting, disarming, and disposing of them before the timer went out. Simple enough.
Ryu hoped his animal senses might help him locate the bombs and his wings would help him get them out of the city. The hard part was locating them though. And how to dispose of them? Logically dumping them into the nearby lake would make the most sense. The high water pressure would contain most, if not all of the blast and he doubted there would be any fish in the water or lakegoers swimming to endanger. Any damage done to the environment could be fixed at a later date by a construction crew. Better to have to replant a few trees and fill a few holes than having to rebuild a skyscraper.
And so with Satou taking the lead and instructing everyone on where to go, Ryu nodded at him. His body began to glow red as two white wings erupted from his back, before stretching out and flapping, taking Ryu into the sky as a tail sprouted from his lower spine, his hero uniform contorting around the new appendages. And with that, Ryu flew off towards the northeastern part of the city. But before he left he'd shout down to everyone. "If you find a bomb but can't transport it, signal me and leave it on a rooftop! I'll grab it!"
After all, so far as he could tell, he was the only one here who could fly.
