I'll see you all tomorrow." Said one of many teachers. What was different about this class in particular is that it was the last class of the day and left the rest of it to be freely handled however each student see fit. Responsibly, carelessly or a confident mixture of just enough effort to survive academics while still being out there. Daiki was a careful student through and through. While his physical performance was an astounding spectacle of light and action his academics took a whole different approach. He applied the wisdom of a third year genius always crammed into books. You could almost imagine a pair of spectral reading glasses to have some sort of symbol of intelligence given how otherwise uncharacteristic he'd look compared to his actions. Needless to say most of 1-A had things to do. Whether they intended to go train, study, hang out with friends or otherwise varied between each of them. However Daiki chose to stay behind. It was late afternoon, and there was a very guilty pleasure of his. Of course, with the teacher packing up their bags to go home for the day too they'd look towards him and knowing he does this fairly often left him be. They shut the door, if it needed any locking they apparently entrusted Daiki to undergo the task. What that guilty pleasure was is something so simple most people would scoff. It was the sky and the setting sun. As blue started to shift into a warm glow of orange, Daiki made notes during times he could to just watch it set. Was he a stargazer? Not really, he didn't own a telescope at all. Though something about the colored skies from many different natural elements coming together was beautiful to him. The embrace of the sun, the glow over Musutafu and most of all the expansive orange sky that was vacant of clouds in any noticeable capacity. It was those sights that left Daiki just sitting at his desk with a palm to his cheek observing. Turned away from the door and looking right out of the window. If anyone had shown up, until they made themselves known he'd be blissfully aware. After all, UA's generally a safe place. If there was another attack they'd have plenty of warning with how much force the Villains would need to bust through security. On his desk in front of him besides his notes which he had closed up and put into his bag, there was a series of sheets. They seemed to be abstract accumulations of lines, circles and squares? Lots of arches about. What it really was is drawn up plays for Basketball, but for someone who didn't really know that it could look like anything really. Though perhaps it gives off that sporty vibe just based on arrows pointing here and there and some technical lingo written off to the side in a legend. Flipping a pencil between his index and middle finger he just sighed while turning his attention back to the sky after drafting up another play idea. He'd practice those later in the gym. Mind you, he also needed to draft up a Hero costume. Huh, he wondered what he might want to look like in a professional capacity. Heroic but... There's a lot of ways to get there, the details were between the lines. Still, that was a problem for later. Other than him, the class was currently empty unless... Chiura had, in fact, departed with the rest of the class upon the lecture's conclusion -- though she had always intended to return. When she did so, she was gripping a trio of implements: in her left hand, a basket of erasers that needed clapping; in her right, a large cloth rag; and gripped carefully by the end of her tail, a steadily leveled bucket of soapy water.
"Oh! Hello, Satou-San," she chimed happily as she spotted the man sitting at his desk and poring over his notes. Inwardly, she admired his studious intent; she wondered, idly, what it was that he was so intent to review. He always seemed to be one or five steps ahead of the other students -- or at least, in front of her. It was hard for Chiura to imagine that the man even had to review at all.
But then, perhaps that wasn't giving him enough credit; as naturally gifted as he seemed to be, academic talents didn't usually come without a great deal of rote memorization and effort. It was honestly admirable, the way he insisted on being so thorough; it would have been easy for someone like Daiki to simply get by on his physical talents, but he seemed intent on becoming the full package. It served as a good motivator, even if Chiura doubted that she'd ever be able to get to even his base level.
She slithered forwards, setting the bucket of water down next to the chalk board. She had managed to get all the way from the restroom without spilling more than a drop or two. "I hope I'm not being a bother," she said as she began to lather up the cloth in the sudsy water, before reaching up and applying it to the board with a cleanly fervor. "I'll try to go quickly and quietly, so as to not be in your way!"
In truth, Chiura didn't even need to be here. It wasn't her week to clean; but with the sports festival coming up, whoever's turn it was seemed to have forgotten -- so Chiura had decided to take the task upon herself. After all, a clean learning environment made for heightened morale for all of the 1-A students!

It was that voice that caused his head to turn away from the view outside of the window. Looking closer, he noticed the finger print of an index finger's oil that'd pressed up against the glass. Probably only recognizing it because he'd taken note of Chiura with cleaning supplies. He offered her a smile and watched her start working. Not just watching of course, he answered her greeting in kind. " Hey, Yutsuko-chan." He then just left her to her work but was intent on checking from time to time. He didn't really have a chance to really do so though, when she followed up with two other lines. He'd frown, but that was the opposite of being supportive, it's not wrong to feel intrusive, just incorrect in the specific scenario. Provoking a bad response with a frown would only worsen the at times self deprecating personality he'd noticed she had. Though it was different than Fu at one point. Where Fu once had helpless despair, he thought he saw that she had a similar feeling of inadequacy, but instead she aspired to beat that. He admired that determination. Still, he responded in a way that would potentially shut down all worry that he didn't mind her company. Unless she thought he was putting up a front, but it's incredibly hard to fake a smile as genuine as the slight smirk he was giving at the moment. " Hey, don't beat yourself up Yutsuko-chan. This is our classroom this year. 1-A. You're welcome here, in fact I appreciate you taking a moment to realize the assigned student didn't show up. I had actually intended to after I was done here clean up, not the first time; it happens now and then, so I'm glad you thought of that." Taking a moment he pondered, " Sorry for flattering you in advance, but that's just it, you're thoughtful. Just don't think bad things. You're welcome here, no one's burdened by you." His smile widened as he playfully patted his right bicep. "Especially not me!" He'd joke, before letting out a sigh. " I was just prepping for our next basketball game. We just finished our Inter-High qualifiers, now we have some practice games lined up. Then it's off to Tokyo for the big stage." He lifted up the paper on his desk. " This is a game plan, I guess it's a little excessive but I'd rather reach too far than fall short. Anyways, how's your day been going so far, any plans for tonight?" Flattering her in advance indeed. Chiura hadn't so much as gone beyond her initial apology before Daiki had beset her with a frankly rousing string of compliments and praise. It was all the girl could do not to swoon on the spot -- though she did her best to direct her blushing face forwards towards the chalkboards so that the chiseled blonde wouldn't notice her sudden dilemma. Unfortunately, there wasn't much she could do about the flicking of her tail in the fashion it always seemed to follow when its host was flustered or nervous.
Daiki didn't think she was a burden. It was remarkable, honestly -- he was perhaps the one most entitled to the use of these spaces, given his potential. His appeal. She had heard from his own mouth about his brush with a real villain some days ago. Between that and his quirk and his numerous academic credentials -- well, he was the complete package. She shivered.
Still, she didn't know how to respond -- and she was quite glad for an out of the initial conversation as Daiki instead turned her attention towards his work product. "Oho!" She grinned, setting her cleaning supplies down for a moment. They could wait, she thought -- this legitimately interested her. "I think that's a very good attitude to have. It shows off your passion! And well -- no such thing as being over prepared, yeah?"
Chiura had never played basketball -- or any team sports, for that matter. It wasn't for a lack of desire, though; she loved the thought of competing. They just didn't let metamorphic quirks like hers into the youth leagues for fear of ruining the competition. (In their defense, basketball would prove rather easy when she could just raise herself up to the loop).
"Tonight?" she asked, giving a little shrug of her shoulders. "Not really. I was thinking of baking some cookies for Futaba-chan."

He knew she was right, and it wasn't as if he was lecturing himself for going to extra mile on something. After all, one of the biggest lessons he learned was to not leave things to the last minute. Generally in the context of attendance, but there came a time not so long ago he drew a parallel. With Hero work, there's no 'start' time for a crime, it just happens. The sooner there's a response means there's a higher chance lives can be saved. That was why he started coming to class well on time instead of running in just when the door was about to shut. That switch in mindset did carry over to his other practices. When Chiura mentioned that she was making homemade food for Fu, he couldn't help but smile. Internally he knew he was doing his part by just being there for her, he personally didn't feel any value to her in making her food and gifts. It was his way of telling her to make it through this, since they can make food and share gifts when she's better. Despite all of that when people spoke about taking time out of their day to give her gifts and treats it made him feel slightly guilty on an almost instinctive level. Though he was mature enough to see the bigger picture, it wasn't about how much this or that person contributed to making Fu's life easier. It was about how they came together as a whole, how 1-A made Fu's life better. With that sentiment he looked back down to the paper with a slight smirk. He'd look up again. " Thank you Yutsuko-chan. That means a lot to me. Jun said he was going to help cover some of her medical expenses as well, I'm humbled to be able to go to school with so many amazing people- me included of course. I know I can seem pretty cool at times, aha." He said, rubbing the back of his neck as is customary when he unintentionally OR intentionally strokes his ego. He knows which it is, but for others it's up to interpretation based on what they know of his character. " What I think is most impressive that being a new transfer, you didn't know Fu. I mean, not as well as some of us. I'm sure you've talked to her plenty by now, but she was already sick when you got here, right? So to go out of your way even when you didn't have a definite reason... That's really kind of you." He repeated. " But yeah, I want to go the extra mile. I think I hinted at it on the track a while back but I want to be the best Hero. It's not about being better than others, it's about going so far beyond what's expected of me as an individual that I can influence billions. No matter how tough I am I'll only be one person, but with how the world works in our age it's easy to have your story get out there to give others hope." He went a little slack, resting his palm to his forehead. " God, all I ever think about is being a Hero. I mean that's fine and all, but even I can tell I'm a broken record haha. I guess I'm in love with it, that's all. Hopefully you can bear with it." He'd say with a light smile. " If you want I can help out with the cookies. I mean I'm no pro at cooking or baking or whatever- not by a longshot, but if it's hard to juggle all the preparatory stuff I can make it a bit easier. Besides, I still have to visit Fu today myself. Daiki's words were something of a massive understatement; he basically seemed 100% cool 100% of the time. She smiled politely, trying to contain her excitement at just being included in a conversation with him. "I mean, I dunno," she said, voice ever bashful as she waved off the majority of Daiki's praise for her kindness and enthusiasm. "Fu deserves it, you know? It's really not a matter of anything good about me. I'm just happy to help bring a smile to someone's face when I can."
Chiura listened to Daiki talk for a bit as she continued to clean; he mentioned his aspirations, and it just made the serpent feel more out of her league. The best hero ever?! Chiura just wanted to be a hero at all. It was hard to imagine -- but she could easily picture someone like Daiki going for it. After all, he was so... Prototypical. "One person can change the world," she observed quietly. "That's been true forever -- even before heroes came around, you know?" She thought back to her time spent with Chryssa discussing ancient myths and legends. There had always been heroes, of a sort -- just as there had always been monsters like her.
Daiki was certainly single-minded in his ambition. It was admirable, if a little worrying. Chiura inwardly hoped that he didn't run the risk of burning out; in that moment, she took it upon herself to ensure that she would do what she could to keep him going strong. "Records break because they're well worn and well loved. I think your dedication is admirable." In truth, she'd never seen a record in her life -- but that didn't seem important right now. "I'd love your help with the cookies, if you really don't mind. Fu would be so happy!"

I've always had trouble coming up with a Hero name, since I don't want it to be so nuances that I become like... You know, the Hero that specializes in 'X' thing, you know? Those types of names are fine and all, a cliche example being something like Electro. I just wanted something that had a lot of sentimental value. So one of the names I went through before submitting Anthem as my official name- at this point, still might change it... Was actually Atlas. I don't know too much about him, I just knew that he held the world up on his shoulders in mythology or something. It resonated a lot with me, only reason I didn't go with it is because I didn't want to be defined by something that already exists." He'd say, scratching at his right shoulder whilst looking up towards Chiura as she went about the cleaning duties. He'd give her a moment to take that in and maybe respond during the running dialogue before continuing.
"But yeah, I'd love to help out. I can help finish up here, I mean it's so quick and simple that it's a little disappointing that whoever was on duty missed their work. Class president, whoever that may be is going to have a lot of work on their hands. I'm actually going to be running myself." He'd say, seeming to be confident in that statement. He followed it up with a question, asking if she would be running as well. " Are you?" Regardless of her answer, he'd start to piece his things together. Reaching a hand over towards the handbag pushed into his desk which contained an archive of academic notes, he opened it up and slid the play sheet into a small pocket on the back of the cover. Closing up the binder he'd retrieved from the small rectangular handbag, he'd zip it up and place it back inside. Standing up with it in his left hand he'd move towards the front of the class. Turning towards her he'd set the bag on the nearest table, counter, podium, whatever was available. Folding his arms lightly across his chest he'd ask. " So, what's all left? We can finish it off quick and head out. Fu's tired a lot lately, so if we want to get those cookies to her today we're going to have to get started pretty soon. Before the sun sets anyways. Might be smart to call into the hospital ahead of time to check if she's resting or not first too. If she's asleep or taking a nap, best to not wake her." "I think Atlas is a wonderful name -- though it almost seems... Sad?" She shook her head gently. "I mean, think of the implication. Sure, he was incredibly strong -- but he was tasked with a terrible fate, too. Destined to take the entire world's weight upon his shoulders until he simply couldn't bare it anymore..." Chiura frowned, considering Daiki with curious eyes. "I think that's asking too much of yourself. Self-sacrifice is all well and good, but -- well. People have to be able to stand and slither on their own tails, yeah? Er. Stand on their own two feet. Whichever. Metaphors are hard."
Chiura stiffened a bit as Daiki brought up the upcoming class elections. "Oh, I'll probably run for the experience," she said, waving her hands noncommittally in front of her chest as a means of dismissing any notion of competition. "Goodness knows I wouldn't stand a chance, though. I think there are far more suitable candidates than myself, and I'm sure the class will see that as well."
She had set the erasers aside, now, and had picked up an almost comically large feather duster from her little cleaning tote. "Just have to dust the desks," she said, a little smile returning to her face. At least cleaning was something she could do with ease. "Back at home I would just tape those dry mop cloths to my tail and slither around. Pretty silly, right? But it was also pretty effective! Here, though, we have to use these. Oh, well!"

I only knew Atlas for carrying the weight of the world, I never knew he succumbed to that weight. Needless to say there are differences. Nobody asked me to do this and there's no pressure from anyone, it's all of my own undertaking and all for a good cause. And second I do agree with you. People should be able to stand up on their own, believe me; I don't expect to be everywhere all of the time to stop every little thing. I'm not that delusional. However my goal is to make enough of an impact in the places I can be to where I become an inspiration to the world, and people take it on themselves to become better versions of the people they were. That's what life is about, always moving forward. And I can imagine, haha. Don't worry about it. Just be yourself." He said, moving to help out. While she was at one side of the classroom he was at the other. Wiiiith... He blinked, lifted the empty desk and tried to shake the dust out. Dork. Putting it back down he scoffed. " I don't actually have a duster, I could use the brush meant to erase chalk but that seems like a poor decision... Do you have a spare brush with your supplies?" He'd ask, looking over and raising a brow. Either she'd be able to offer him something or she wouldn't, and either he'd find himself walking over and chatting or just chatting. Daiki was quick to dismiss notions of comparison between himself and the tragedy of Atlas. Chiura smiled and nodded along, accepting his differentiation wholesale -- even if it didn't quite dismiss her concerns. Those nuances were all well and good, she thought; but it belied the inevitability of failure. Everyone had their limits, she thought; and going beyond them always invited the possibility of collapse. She didn't like thinking about that sort of thing, though, so when Daiki provided her with the opportunity to think about something (anything) else, she and her mind happily obliged.
In response to his inquiry, Chiura tossed him a smaller mini duster. It wasn't as efficient as the one that she was employing, but it certainly looked less absurd.
Daiki's election-time musings took her by surprise, though. She tightened up, and her tailtip whipped about in ample surprise. F-For me?! she said, pausing her cleaning to stare in wonderment at the blonde-haired boy. It didn't make a great deal of sense to her; there were an infinite number of appreciable candidates here at U.A. Candidates with stellar quirks, supreme intellects, indomitable work ethics -- often some combination of the three. And here she was, having just transferred in, and the presumptive star of the classroom wanted to vote for her?
She shivered. She had no idea what to say, so she settled on demure appreciation. "That's very kind of you to say that!" she chimed as she went back to cleaning, turning to face a row of desks against the wall. "I intend to do my best, regardless of my chances of winning. That's what U.A. is all about, right?"*

He obviously noticed the shocked response from his half-way declaration, noticing the swaying of the tail like a cat. Snakes do that too? Do happy snakes wiggle around like crazy? Or is this a personal thing. Regardless he just chose to assume it was because she was either flustered, happy or both. It would be a lie if he didn't feel nice maybe making someones day like that, and the best thing is that his words were truth. As fate would have it in the weeks to come when that day passed, she was who he'd vote for. Swiping around in a desk until he assumed he did a good enough job he'd move on to the next. He was pretty fast, doing little quirk-hops to zip between desk to desk and scrub super fast. One particularly dusty desk even started to emit smoke. He almost started a fire from all the friction. Though, just a little poof of smoke at that. With a sigh of relief and a bit of recovery he'd ease his pace and respond to her. " You know, you seemed surprised. Don't be, you're a lot better than you give yourself credit for. Plus you have something I haven't seen in a lot of people, and that's determination even at your lowest points. You said it yourself, regardless of your chances of winning you'll do your best. That's the mind a hero needs. Regardless of the danger before them and how harrowing it may seem, they need to step forward and do their best to deliver justice and protect people with a smile. I haven't seen that in many others, yet I am sure it is only a matter of time." He'd mention, cleaning up some more desks. At the end of his half of the room he'd set the brush gently on top of a desk and take a seat. "Hmmm..." Chiura tapped her chin with the tip of her tail as she thought back on the conversation thusfar. "Nope! I don't think we did," she said with a shrug. "Do you know what she likes? I was going to default to chocolate chip, but if she has a favorite I'm sure we can come up with something a little bit more creative."
Chiura fell silent as she finished her dusting; the break in the conversation provided her a long moment to consider the man's words. Was her determination really so worthwhile? She'd been called foolish before for similar sentiments. Could her refusal to simply accept her lot in life be considered a strength, instead of a weakness?
Eventually, she broke the silence again. "If the world told you that you shouldn't be a hero," she asked, "Would you do it anyway? Even if -- even if your closest friends or your family told you it was a bad idea? How would you explain it to them... The feelings that you have? The dreams that you aspire to?"
They were questions that Chiura certainly didn't have answers for. But someone like Daiki must have passed those concerns by long ago, right? Someone like Daiki had everything together. There wasn't a lot of room for doubt or consideration between the accolades and the awards and the accomplishments. Yes, Chiura thought; the blonde-haired boy may as well have been from a different universe. He was the sort that was born for this sort of role.

I've heard it from Suzuki-san and Tomoshibi-kun in the past week alone. My family also while supportive of me becoming a Hero, thinks I shouldn't shoot that high. Usually that's harmless, the intent behind their words are your safety as opposed to your happiness and fulfillment. After all, we're inclined to preserve and protect what we have instead of risking it all for perhaps something more beautiful. The people who tell others it's a bad idea to be a Hero are doing it from the same place. It's a natural thing, most of the time. I take it in this case you might be referring to your time in elementary and middle school. Replace a want to preserve and protect with envy, put it that way. There's a question you and I have both answered whether consciously or not. That question is what does it take to be here, right now? You can't just wing the entrance exam. You need to be at the peak of physical performance to cover the ground needed to pass in any predictable capacity. Everyday without pause, training long and hard to get the results you need. Just for a shot at the worlds best school for Heroes. That day we met on the track, we were doing just the same thing. We were training without pause, everyday to reach the milestones we need to reach to achieve our dreams. Our dreams." At that point Daiki would've started to make his way over to Chiura, having finished his half of the classroom as well shortly after she did hers. He kept speaking. " Because at the end of it all, even the most selfless person has their own interests at heart, they're just good interests. Even I when I want to inspire the world and be an amazing Hero, want to help people. I want to help people, otherwise I would get a job as a salesman or something. You being here means something similar as well. The love for others as well as a want to care and protect come from within. So when you hear someone else talk against the thing you've devoted your life towards, your dream. It's just a breeze over your shoulder. Your chasing your dream. I want to inspire the world, so I'll do my best to make it there. Just like I hope you do your best to make it to where you're going, don't let others disarm you or talk you down." With that he'd reassuringly give her a pat on the shoulder, before letting his arm fall back to his side. " If I had to be honest, I wouldn't feel obligated to explain anything. At the end of the day actions speak louder than words. Your heroics will reach their ears no matter where you are and where they are. They'll recognize your passion and see the results. Some people will only consider what you're doing 'success' if you're making money, or if you're famous. That's fine. If you really had to tell them, if they fail to be supportive when you explain that you're pursuing your dreams then... Show them you don't need their support." He said, shrugging. " I've told this to others. Though to be anyones Hero, you first need to be your own. Inspire yourself, reflect on your accomplishments, and overcome self-doubt and inner demons. I won't lie and say I don't doubt myself ever, but I've learned to bulldoze those thoughts without hesitation. Consciousness supersedes subconsciousness, and therefore if you know what you're dream is, you can erase any doubt that might surface." With that he just sort of lingered there. Daiki's words weren't meant as accusations, but they still stung like them. Chiura had never meant to insinuate that he couldn't -- or shouldn't -- do the things that he was doing. She had just been expressing her concern for him and his well-being -- a fact which he acknowledged.
Still, her heart hurt and a lump formed in her throat. He was right, which made her feel even worse about the exchange. Still, the conclusion that he reached carried with it a flicker of hope. She had never looked at things from this particular perspective.
"You know," she said, swallowing her urge to retreat into herself. No -- she would meet Daiki head on in this verbal challenge, at least. "All my life, I've always viewed heroism as something that was assigned to you. Your parents, the schools that accept you, the internships and hero organizations that decide to give you a chance... The people who decide to look up to you and cheer you on. It always seemed like something that was determined by others." She slithered in slow, concentric circles, piling her coils on top of each other so that she could comfortably sit atop them. 'Standing' wasn't really a thing as far as her physiology was concerned, but in terms of proper height and posture this was about as close as she could get.
"But you make me think it's something different. For you, being a hero is self-determinative. So long as you're keeping your ideals, then you're a hero -- the public at large be damned." She smiled a bit, drumming taloned fingers atop the strange faux wood of one of the nearby student desks. "Being my own hero... Honestly, that seems harder than just letting someone else decide whether it's possible. That would require self confidence. That's never really been my strong suit, though..."
She stared up at Daiki with those strange serpentine eyes. "Do you think you could help me learn?" she asked, earnestly. "How to believe in yourself. I know it sounds horribly cheesy, but -- I think it's important..."

Hearing how Chiura saw things gave incite onto where personal insecurity really comes from. Obviously he'd felt like he's needed to live up to outside expectations before. For a basketball game, this or that. Though he's never let it control or guide him such as Chiura's describing. To just be dust in the wind, travelling wherever you're blown. He folded his arms and sat on the corner of a desk as Chiura spoke and posed a very serious question. To help someone believe in themselves. It was honestly a question that was hard to answer. There's no one way and no trick to fixing a persons insecurities. Everyone is different and everyone has different problems they need to overcome even if they manifest in similar ways. He'd look up at her and answer. " Of course I can. And self-confidence is... Well, most people don't truly believe in themselves. We are our worst critics, and our biggest enemies. We're not exceptions to what I said before, sub-consciously we want to be safe and comfortable. We don't want to take risks and we're afraid of going into new territory. Fu-chan has a lot of trouble believing in herself as well. I hope I helped her think otherwise, but we'll see after she recovers." He emphasized after, not considering if she didn't. " The method I've used all my life is to have a light fires that force you to keep going. I can't afford to give up on my dream because of this, this and this." He said with gestures, a theoretical example. " It helps basically give a more palatable answer to your subconscious mind. You need to just... See your self-doubt for exactly what it is. Words in your head that are only superficial. It's almost addictive to prove it wrong. You achieve something once, you become aware that it really is just a voice telling you things that aren't true. Twice? You're rolling now, three times? Now you're sailing. Life is all about momentum, and reacquiring that momentum when we fall. I think what would really, deep down make you believe in yourself is to prove that doubt wrong. Set a goal you don't think you can achieve and make it happen, no matter what it takes. You'll find that even if you fall short, you travelled so much further than you would've thought had you not set that goal." He would say, shifting in place ever so slightly while maintaining eye contact.
"I think that's what Plus Ultra is all about, going beyond your own personal doubts and proving it wrong. Exceeding self, does that make sense? Even if you don't believe in yourself. I believe in you, and so does everyone else here... Or at least most, we have a few who couldn't care if up was down and down was up in the class, but that's just how they are."
