Alright, lets try this again.
A deep breath in, and then slowly exhale. Clear out any distractions, any outside noise. Just focus on the shape. Picture the structure, every little detail; every curve, every edge. Now fix that image in mind, hold on to it for as long as you can. Reach out and pick a spot, not too close, not too far, and project the image onto that spot. Almost.... almost.... there. Now give it form.
Ren's eyes opened as a surge of heat left his body, feeding down his arm and into a line of ice that rapidly extended out across the ground in front of him. The slick patch stretched out roughly 10 feet before it reached its desired location, at which point the frozen mass began to extend upward, twisting and compacting into shape as it rose skyward. A halberd of frost burst from the ground, its gleaming edge arcing up and... it was going to miss. The boy could tell that before it even finished forming, his golden eyes fixing upon the hovering shape that was his target. The drone shifted in its orbit and darted around the tip of the frozen weapon, clearing the the mass by about 6 inches by the time the attack finished.
"Well, that was closer..." Ren mumbled in a futile attempt to console himself at yet another miss. The blonde sighed and let himself slip into a sitting position on the ground. It was still early in the morning at the UA, classes wouldn't start for a few hours and much of the campus was deserted, save for those who had dedicated themselves to morning routines or were in need of supplemental training. Ren tended to be in the former group most of the time, but circumstances had shifted him into the latter more recently. A particularly nasty flu had kept him out of classes for the better part of two weeks, and while he had been able to keep up in most of his classes by hitting the books, it was a lot harder to do that sort of thing when it came to the physical disciplines. He'd missed a number of quirk control and hero studies classes, and that wasn't the sort of thing you could just catch up with in class. He had fallen behind his classmates, and as a result had been coming out to the training fields as often as he could in the mornings to try to make up for the lost time.
It had been about a half hour since he started this morning's training session. The surface beneath him was well covered over with ice, and an array of frozen weaponry surrounded him, about a dozen attempts at the same exercise he'd just failed. The only real consolation he had at this point was that he understood what the problem was. And it was a pretty simple problem. He still wasn't quite used to the way he had been using his quirk lately, the act of creating something specific with his ice rather than just raw shapes took more thought and effort. Up to this point, the only shapes he had been able to accurately call up at a moment's notice were rather simple designs, like shields that were essentially just slabs of ice, and those that he was very familiar with, usually copies of his kendo equipment. Anything that didn't fall into one of those categories took genuine concentration, and were slower to form as a result. Slow enough that the target drone circling around him continued to evade his strikes.
Of course, understanding the issue didn't make it any less frustrating, and there was only so much he could do about it. Continuing to use his quirk like this was about the only real course of action he had; do it enough and the act of creation would stop being a thought exercise and become second nature... hopefully. At the very least, the more he used a particular shape, the faster it seemed he was able to give it form, as was demonstrated by this last near miss. The previous attempts had been ever further off. Putting less detail into his creations also had the effect of speeding up the process, but it tended to come with a few side effects, usually weakening the structure of the ice... probably not the best trade off in most cases. No, the best path forward was likely the most direct one in this case. As they say; practice makes perfect, and Ren had a whole lot of practice still ahead of him.
The boy pushed himself back onto his feet and crouched down, placing one hand on the ground. One more time. A deep breath in, and then slowly exhale. Clear out any distractions, any outside noise. Just focus on the shape...

Training day. This happened every week since she had entered UA, not because she needed the training per se, but if she was to become a hero, why not go plus ultra? Knowing that she needed to conserve as much as her quirk as possible, she prepared donned her 'unique' UA gym outfit. It always felt wrong wearing this outfit; the main reason she liked wearing her jacket the way she did was so that it would hide her revealed skin. Skirts were one thing but pants that practically had their hips cut off felt... strange. Like she was trying to win someone's attention through her choice of attire clothing. This feeling was impacted by the way her shirt sat on her body, the collar was lowered to allow front airflow while almost all of her back was revealed; a feeling she was used to but she still hid such things from others through her jacket. Eventually, she would get used to it; if only she could wear form-fitting spandex underneath it that fit perfectly around her quirk, but she wouldn't be able to get that until much much later. Having the thought that she would practice her control, she headed out to the training grounds once more. Open field training was always better for her no matter what; it was fairly obvious that her quirk was too dangerous to use indoors from the wind pressure she created, so outdoors was the best place with the least amount of collateral damage. While walking toward her normal spot of the field, she heard a rather loud thunk sound, pulling her attention. Off in the distance, she saw what looked like a long ice blue pole-arm sticking out of the ground, with Ren nearby surrounded by what looked like a very slippery surface; it was a slick layer of ice. She knew his quirk used Ice from events on the day they first met. Something else was there as well, and it seemed to be actively evading her fellow student; Ah! A target drone! He was practising his aim! Elke felt the massive urge to greet her friend, a feeling that made her cheeks turn red before she had to pat them down in response. She always wanted to watch him train, but what was even better was training with him! Screw quirk control at this time, she could practice aim! Well, as long as she was with him she would practice aim; it's not like she liked him or anything. Deciding on how she would make her entrance, she thought why not like last time? Taking a step into the edge of the field, she lowered herself toward the ground, manoeuvring her back muscles so her thrusters pointed perfectly against the ground. This was her normal stance to take off from the ground, but this time her goal was one large jump for Elke, but one giant leap for all others. CRACK! FSHHH! Two thrusters along Elke's back opened as a jet of air fired out at intense speed, slamming into the ground behind her with a thundering sound that lasted mere milliseconds. Shortly following the burst of sound, one could hear the consistent blow of air before being replaced by the sound of an object literally flying through the air; it was Elke. Having practised measuring her own travelling distance for such a long time, it was very easy for her to land in the general vicinity of Ren himself; to the point where she had launched upward at such a perfect angle, that where her peak was at the exact centre of the distance between the two. With a happy Grin, as Elke came within range, she shouted to her fellow man from high in the air. "Reeeeeeeeeeeeeeeen!" She knew he didn't have enough time to realize what was happening based on how fast she was travelling in the air, but the sound of her quirk activating at full force could have been easily heard from such a distance. Whether or not the girl was going to land on, or near Ren, it wasn't easy to tell at this point in time as the girl was still descending from above. If she had aimed herself perfectly, she'd land on Ren after slowing down quite a large bit with a single blast of air from both her hands to counter her incredible speed. {Tags and Outfits}{Tags and Outfits} Tags: Ren WolffOutfits: Sleeveless UA Gym Uniform with three key locations cut out: the upper back, the outer thigh, and just below the collarbone. There was a crack of forming ice as Ren looked up, followed by a slight metallic ring. This time his pole arm had scored a grazing hit on the drone, leaving behind a light scratch on it's painted body as the construct quickly restabilized itself. The boy couldn't help but smirk a little. "Alright.... now we're getting somewhere." Maybe he would actually score a direct hit soon, he mused as he closed his eyes once again and repeated his inner mantra again. The picture in his head was forming faster now, though it was honestly hard to tell if that was because he was getting the hang of it, or if he had just done it enough times in a row that it was starting to linger in his thoughts more. He should probably switch to a different shape and come back to this one later, just to make sure that the progress wasn't imaginary.... Not until after he landed a hit though.
So caught up in his focus, Ren's mind neglected to register not only the blast of air in the distance, but also the sudden shout that came from above him. His eyes snapped open and a line of ice began to extend forward, just in time for him to feel a spontaneous blast of air and a small form slam into him. The world around him suddenly slowed to a crawl. This feeling was... familiar... Something like this had happened not too long ago... As his body began to shift sideways with the momentum, his gaze trailed down toward the point of contact to see a mess of silver hair. Elke...? When did she... Oh no... His eyes suddenly went wide at the realization of what was happening.
"Scheisse!!"
He could feel the tight grasp he had been holding on his quirk practically evaporate as his focus shattered. Free of the limits he placed on it, there was a sudden surge as his body temperature dropped. There was no stopping what would happen next, and the boy was well aware of that fact; this had happened before. Instinctually, he threw his arms around Elke and pivoted his body as he fell, putting himself between her and the forming ice. The energy that had been pushing the freshly-formed halberd up was multiplied several times and simply could not be contained in the given form. The ground ground shook and there was a great crashing noise as it exploded outward into large crystalline shards, the shape expanding to compensate for the massive influx of power.
The whole exchange probably lasted less than a second, but even after sliding to a stop on the frozen surface, Ren lie still on his side for several moments, muscles tensed up in a vain effort to protect his body from damage. Eventually, he forced himself to move, glancing back to assess the damage. A sharpened spike of ice had come to a stop a mere foot from his back. Elke's momentum had carried them clear of the danger zone, but only just barely. The whole formation looked to be almost fifteen feet across, a mess of icy blades that had seemed to have drawn in all of the ice from the surroundings in order to fuel its own growth. Rising up from the center, the only recognizable remains of the weapon he had been trying to form, was the head of the halberd, sticking out of the sides of the tallest spike.
Ren stared at the formation that had nearly pierced him for a long moment before a sigh of relief finally managed to escape. The tension in his muscles vanished and his body went limp as he glanced down at the girl he was holding. "Are you alright Elke? I know I said I'd catch you, but you really have to give me better warning." He said as he quickly checked her over, a slightly exasperated smile forming once he was sure that she didn't have any noteworthy injuries.

Ren hadn't even noticed that the silver-haired demon was about to slam into him, but it didn't matter. Being right on target, Elke collided with the blonde, wrapping her arms around him in the largest tackling hug she could muster before her own velocity threw him off his feet. It was fun, really; tackling someone with the biggest hug one could muster. Was it her showing affection? No, she didn't like Ren, right? The thought didn't stay for long, she was having a blast laughing and giggling as Ren cursed aloud in German from the surprise. Little did she know how dangerous the situation really was. As soon as Ren's arms and wrapped around her in response, her face turned completely red. Was this what she had wanted? Him to embrace her as well? Such a strange greeting this was; no. That wasn't what she wanted, nope no way. She wouldn't admit it; her face said the words well enough despite how much she tried to hide it. Once they landed and slid several feet, Ren's body seemed to tense, and before long he was above her, holding her tight and as one did, she forgot how to breathe; at least until the sound of an iceberg cracking off the polar caps was heard as the ground shook from a violent explosion. Normally people scream when they are surprised but Elke didn't. She's heard explosions before and they were never a good sign, and screaming never helped. Instead, her face turned deathly pale as the gears slowly began to turn in her head. Peering around Ren to see where the two had used to be, she could only see carnage; shards of ice all over the field with pieces impaling the ground. Not too far from the two of them was a single shard, stuck deep in the ground as if it was flying at the pair themselves before falling just a bit too short. At this moment, she realized what she had done. Ren's quirk originally hadn't seemed to be too dangerous, and he appeared to have great control when they first met but... she didn't realize what would have happened if he lost concentration. As the two stared at the formation, Elke's expression was simply horror; the look one gives when they know they almost just died, well after Ren had calmed down about the situation. It took a few moments for her to register that he was talking to her, making sure she was fine but over-all her head was just dizzy. Everything sounded muffled and it felt like she was about to faint and the world began to fade to black... A loud gasp came from Elke as the world rapidly came back into focus. Panting for a few seconds her gaze simply met the ground as her mind was still processing what had just occurred. She needed to apologize; that was dangerous and reckless of her. "I'm... fine. Yeah, fine. Ren, I'm sorry I didn't know." One could tell that she felt terrible about the situation; it's one thing to have a chance of causing minor damage, but with the way, those ice shards appeared one could tell that if she had slowed down any further, one of them could have been pulled away on a stretcher. "It's my fault. I... I thought I'd surprise you and join practice but..." The girl looked like she was on the verge of tears. Just the thought of losing a friend was weighing her down, and worse still it would have been because of her. {Tags and Outfits}{Tags and Outfits} Tags: Ren WolffOutfits: Sleeveless UA Gym Uniform with three key locations cut out: the upper back, the outer thigh, and just below the collarbone. Ren let out a second, internal sigh of relief as Elke confirmed that she was, in fact, still in one piece and he once again closed his eyes. Part of him would have been content to just lay there until his adrenaline finally died down, but the trembling voice of his friend's apology quickly drew his attention. He reopened his eyes and looked to see that the girl was on the verge of breaking down over what had very nearly come to pass. That... was pretty natural actually. If anything, his own response to such a near death experience was the odd one. Sure, he'd cut it closer than this in the past when his quirk went wild, hell, he didn't even get hurt by it this time, but most people probably would have found his utter lack of worry about himself... concerning. That thought probably wouldn't ever occur to him without someone else pointing it out. What did occur to him however, was that his friend was nearly in tears and he hadn't tried to do anything about it yet.
"Hey, it's not all on you." The mistake had been fairly reasonable one, all things considered. No one at this school knew the true nature of his quirk, and this particular weakness of his was one that he did his best to keep on top of at all times. "I'm at least partly to blame, I wasn't paying attention to my surroundings and... well, this is a problem I've known about and I'm still out in the field instead of the private rooms. I figured it was quiet enough in the mornings that I could get away with it, but... I guess that's still a bit careless." Strangely enough, loss of control like that wouldn't have been anywhere near as hazardous if he had been using his abilities normally. The more he concentrated, the more disastrous the results were when that concentration was broken. It was like building up water pressure and then breaking off the valve. That was one of the main reasons he was training in this particular way; so that he'd have to focus less to use the ability, thereby reducing the risks of something like this happening when it really mattered.
"Still, we're both alright, see?" He climbed up onto his knees and sat Elke up, holding out his arms so that she could get a good look at him and see that he was no worse for wear. "Nothing bleeding, nothing broken, maybe a bruise or two, but that's about it. So don't let it bother you, alright? You couldn't have known what would happen, but now that you do, maybe try to get my attention first next time, huh? You've gotta give me at least some chance to keep my promise." He smiled softly and reached out to ruffle her hair a bit before letting himself fall back into a sitting position.
As Ren's heart rate began to return to normal, the blonde couldn't help but go back to staring at the mass of twisted ice that rose up beside them. It was a bit odd; the effects of him losing control always seemed to dwarf that of what he was able to do when he was deliberately going all out... Maybe that meant something about his fundamental understanding was wrong? But... in what way? It's not like there was anyone he could really ask about it. It was frustrating, but he would just have to figure it out on his own. "We'll get there eventually, we have to..." He said to himself as he raised his hand toward the ice formation, holding it out for a second before snapping his fingers. In an instant, the whole thing shattered into a fine powder, falling as snow that was quickly stolen away by the gentle find flowing through the field.

Sniffles would leak out from the much smaller German as her eyes began to pool water at their bases by the time Ren had started comforting her. It seemed to work, as the waterworks stopped themselves from going, but her internal distress was exceptionally obvious. From what could be easily noted, is she was trying to keep herself calm; the sniffling wasn't designed to egg herself onto crying but instead to try to avoid from doing so. Elke was strong, she knew she needed to be but the thought of being the reason for hurting her friends was rough on the to-be-hero.[break][break]
Elke tried to wipe the water off of her eyes with her arm, but ended up only smearing it across her face as Ren sat her up to meet nearly eye level; he was still much, much taller than her. Noticing he was right, both of them were completely unscathed, she seemed to calm down while smiling behind a wall of tears. Using her hands to lift her shirt a bit higher she was able to clear her eyes of most of the tears, but her skin remained stained around her eyes, something that would vanish over the next few minutes or so. Immediately after Ren ruffled her hair, she puffed up her cheeks and began trying to straighten it back to its normal state. This boy sure knew how to play her heart like a fiddle.[break][break]
Ren's eyes once more drifted over to the mass of ice, and Elke's eyes followed. It was impressive how intricate the twisted ice was, her friends quirk intrigued her more and more as she saw it in use; and with how fast he was able to dismiss it, even more, intrigued than before. A simple snap was all it took, and the large ice structures had been completely disintegrated into bits of snow. The boy in front of her said something before he removed the ice. Something about getting somewhere; curiosity killed the Elke.[break][break]
Tugging at the edge of Ren's shirt, she tried pulling his attention. "Get where? Is that why you were practising?" She had stopped crying by now, and her face started to look more normal despite the recent bits of waterworks. Perhaps, he was training to get somewhere? Elke was training to make her parents proud, but what was Ren here for? Elke might never find out but she was still greatly curious but knew better than to ask outright. She would note the now inert drone nearby, which had disabled itself when it noticed it was no longer in use for practice.

A slight pull at Ren's shirt drew his gaze back to the girl sitting in front of him. What was he aiming for? A distant look mixed into his smile and he shook his head before looking back as the snow was beginning to be swept away by the wind. He really didn't talk about his past when he could avoid it, mostly because he was still hiding from his family in Japan, but this part was... probably fine. It didn't trace back to the Yamaki clan and, most importantly, it was true. With the ice crystals dancing through the air, he paused for a few seconds before saying a single word. "Siegfried."
Matthias Wolff, known to the public as the hero Siegfried, ranked third in Europe and ninth world wide. Ren's uncle was one of the most skilled heroes in the world, a specialist in wilderness rescue and survival. He was a serious man with a bit of a rough edge that met great success in spite of the fact that he tended to stay well away from the limelight... Though he was known for having a bit of a wild streak when he was younger. That tendency to play around was one of the reasons why Ren could get away with claiming that the man was his father, because he wasn't around to deny it, and even he probably wouldn't be able to disprove the claim if someone brought it up without enough details. It was a convenient cover, sure, but Ren truly idolized the man. He always had growing up, had always looked forward to when his uncle would come to visit and hearing his stories about life as a hero. He was probably one of the reason why the boy ended up following this path in the first place. His respect for the man was to the level where Ren based his cover quirk on the hero's own abilities. His creations were made of tempered glass rather than Ice, but it was close enough. Or at least it would be, if he could actually get the hang of it.
"You know my family, right? I've got an awful lot to live up to." As the snow cleared away he saw the drone lying on the ground. Though it looked mostly fine from the front, he could see that the back was almost completely caved in from the impact of his quirk. After a second, almost as if on cue, the power light on the drone flickered a few times and the chassis sparked before cracking open, a plume of bluish smoke bursting out in a minuscule explosion. Ren just shook his head again and gestured to where the ice had been a moment before. "See, I couldn't do that if I wanted to right now. It just happens when I mess up sometimes. At the very least I have to get a hold of it if I'm going to be a hero, otherwise I'll end up hurting people I'm supposed to be saving." He pushed himself back onto his feet, a look of determination taking hold in his golden gaze. "That's why I'm practicing. Because its something that I have to figure out, and because I've got such a long way to go before I've got a chance at measuring up to my 'legacy'."
He extended a hand to help Elke up, ready to get back to work now that the crisis had passed. "You said you came out to train, right? I really wouldn't mind having a partner if you're still feeling up to it."

Elke hadn't put the Wolff name together with her homeland in her head as properly as she should have, and as Ren spoke a single name, her eyes widened in realization. Ren Wolff. Siegfried. The famous hero from the Wolff family. Her parents had mentioned the Wolff family before, and that they were proud to have such a prestigious last name tied with their country, but with the way Ren said that man's name Elke could only think that he was the son of Siegfried; the sentence he followed up with only hammered this idealogy home. It took every bone in her body to prevent herself from fangirling, but a little squee came out from her lips nonetheless as stars filled her eyes.[break][break]
Of course he had a lot to live up to; his family was that of legendary heroes! Elke was lucky, just graduating UA would mean she succeeded in her parents eyes, but trying to imagine just what Ren would need to do to make his own parents proud was difficult at best, impossible at worst. That settles it; she'd help him get there; if her parents were so easy to win over, and his so difficult, she'd find a way to make them proud of Ren. She would gladly stand by his side as they wade through villain after villain and... wait, what was she thinking!? Her cheeks started turning red before a crackle was heard, followed immediately by a small explosion; enough to cause a puff of smoke to pop out from the drone. It wasn't disabled, it was demolished. As Ren started explaining about his quirk and needing to find control, Elke could only silently agree. She now knew how dangerous his quirk could be; first step was helping him get better at controlling it.[break][break]
Taking Rens hand, and standing on her own two feet, she smiled lightly back up to him; not as much energy was there as her thoughts were jumbled every which way. "Y-yeah I did." Was all she could muster as he asked about her coming out to train, but followed with the simple question of joining him. A fire sparked behind her eyes as determination lit up her expression; this was her entire goal in the first place! "Yeah! Practice!" She'd turn her head and look at the destroyed drone. "But... the drone is... do you have an idea what to do?" Elke's eyes proceeded to scan the field, looking for something else to train with; nothing in sight. Then, the thought came to her; she had seen some students fighting mock droids earlier that week. Perhaps they could have a competition; whoever could best the most amount of droids in a short time wins![break][break]
"I got an idea! I saw some other students doing this thing in one of the other buildings after I got lo-..." She'd pause, cheeks becoming a bit red by the near moment of herself admitting she got lost immediately after Ren showed her around the school. "... wandered! Yeah! I wandered into one of those buildings and I saw them fighting these droid robot things. First to beating five of them wins!" She seemed exceptionally happy at the idea; after all, if she competed with Ren, then both of them would get better much faster than without the other.[break]

The reaction shouldn't have caught Ren off guard, Matthias was very well regarded back in Germany after all, but the boy couldn't help but turn back toward Elke with a raised eyebrow at the outburst. When he saw the look on her face however, his smile quickly returned. It was probably the same expression he had worn years back when he listened to those stories. He hadn't gotten a chance to see the man since he left for Japan. Back then he had been pretty close with the family, coming by to visit fairly often, but the last time was probably right after his mother... It'd been that long hadn't it? A part of him wondered if he should try to get in contact, but Siegfried was never the type to stay in one spot long, and trying to hunt him down might draw attention the boy would rather avoid.
When Elke agreed to his offer to continue training, Ren found himself once again staring down at the smoldering wreck that used to be the target drone. "Y-yeah, about that..." He scratched the back of his head with a bit of embarrassment as he started to think of an alternative. Obviously getting a new target dummy wasn't out of the question, but they would go through the things pretty fast if they were both aiming at them. Sparring couldn't happen without someone there to supervise it, and there wasn't anyone around this early so that was out of the question. What did that leave them? Before he could settle on an idea, Elke brought up a suggestion of her own. Rooms where people fought robots...? Ren thought about it for a second. "Oh, you mean one of the simulation rooms... Yeah, that's not a bad idea." The school's more high-tech training environments tended to almost constantly be in use by the upperclassmen, so Ren never really got a chance to use them outside of their classes. As early as it was though, there was a pretty decent chance that some of them were free. "That 'ought to be one of them over... there. Yeah, c'mon." He pointed to one of the larger structures nearby and waved for his classmate to follow.
Luckily the training room was unoccupied, and as the pair walked in they were greeted with a room the size of a small warehouse, with the walls and floors completely covered in small metallic tiles and a remarkably high ceiling. The room was entirely empty save for a single computer terminal on the wall by the entrance, which Ren soon approached. "Let's see if I remember how to work this thing..." The boy tapped away on the screen, working his way through the menus as he set up the system. "Combat training, average difficulty, random location, two participants and.... Pattern B? Sure, I guess." Computers weren't Ren's strong point, but the interface was simple enough to navigate, even if he didn't fully understand what some of the settings did. Those ones he just left on the default values and soon enough a large button appeared in the center of the screen that read "ENGAGE SYSTEM".
"Alright, you ready?" Ren double checked with Elke before pressing the button. The second he did, a computerized voice played over the speakers "Simulation confirmed. Formation in progress, please stand back." A low rumble began to reverberate out from beneath the floor as the whole room began to shake a bit. The tiles that covered every surface began to extend outward, interlocking with each other as they moved in order to form structures and shapes. Within half a minute, what had been an empty room was transformed into a mock urban environment, a small chunk of city about the size of a football field, rendered in the same sleek grey metal that had lined the facility when they first entered. Sometimes Ren forgot just how much research and development the school put into its training programs, but a visit to the more advanced facilities like this one always brought back that sense of awe at what the UA was capable of.
Once the last shaft of metal locked into place, the voice once again came over the sound system. "Formation complete, please proceed to the starting position." About half way down the room, a yellow circle lit up on the floor, Indicating where it wanted them to go. Following the instructions, Ren made his way over to the spot, which stood in the center of a four way intersection. Once both of them entered the designated area, the circle would turn green and the computer would make one more announcement before it began to fade away. "Participants confirmed. Objective: disable all targets. Exercise begins in thirty seconds." Ren looked down at his classmate with a smirk. "Here we go." He turned around and clapped his hands together, forming a bokuto from his ice before settling into his kendo stance. At the end of each 'street' was a small opening in the walls, which is where Ren assumed the drones would be coming from. He locked his eyes on the one in front of him and took a deep breath, waiting for the timer to finish ticking down to zero.

Ren seemed to understand what Elke had meant by rooms where they fight robots, mentioning simulation rooms in response. "Simulation rooms..." She'd coo to herself as Ren pointed out one of the larger structures at the edge of the field. Once more it appeared she would need to visit one of these large featureless structures, or at least it was featureless to her. The world didn't look right unless she was looking at things from above, the opposite of people themselves but she couldn't put her finger on why. Following Ren once more toward the simulation room, it's sheer size only became more apparent as they grew closer. Were they to fight indoors? That might not be such a great idea.[break][break]
As they stepped inside the training room itself, it was obvious that Ren and Elke were both early birds as no other students could be seen. Off in the corner, there was a single computer terminal, which shortly upon entering Ren had wandered over and started tapping away at muttering to himself. While he did so, Elke stepped into the centre of the room looking all around; perhaps this place was fine to use her quirk in. Using her quirk indoors always scared her as the pressure could destabilize structures easily if pressed from inside, and with nowhere for her air to go it became extremely difficult to control her own flight paths. Maybe, just maybe, this building was large enough for her to not create turbulent winds during practice.[break][break]
"Alright, you ready?" The words of Ren came from near the console as if calling out to Elke to confirm that she was ready. A quick chirping from the computer began as it asked them to stand back; which Elke promptly scattered from the field to the edges in a brief panic; flailing arms and all. "A-Already!?" Her cheeks puffed up once more. "Are you sure about this?" Her question would seem more about the training than what her question really was geared towards; the walls, the ceiling, indoors still spooked her a little but she would still practice nonetheless. As quick as she had asked the question, the ground began to rumble as panels began to shift and change. In mere moments the entire room shifted from featureless panels of steel to a sudden fake urban environment as if an entire chunk of the city was carved out and placed in the small football field. It surely was a sight to behold; her father would have wanted to pick apart the mechanics to see how it worked.[break][break]
A simple 30-second countdown began as soon as the two had both reached the circle. Elke's mind continued worrying about how her quirk would behave indoors. The worry was plastered all over her face, despite it being her idea she appeared torn or concerned, far more on edge than she had ever appeared before. Just what were they about to fight? Large robots? Small robots? Ren seemed calm about the entire situation; perhaps he didn't know just like how she knew little of his quirk. Trying her best to hide her worries, she smirked back awkwardly to Ren's own in response. It almost looked like the droids could come from all four directions; Perhaps their true goal was to stop the droids from getting to the centre officially. Lowering herself to the ground, she wiggled side to side slightly to get even lower and held her stance. Elke was waiting for the first drone to pop out so she could launch at it full force.[break][break]
5... 4... 3... 2... 1... 0! The countdown finally finished as a small spherical bot rolled out from two tubes down opposite lanes; one where Ren was facing and another where Elke was watching. It seemed to be a ball like object landing on the ground with a thud before holes opened on four sides, creating small thin wirey legs while a single panel on top opened up with one large menacing red eye glaring straight at the two in the center. As if in unison, both charged; they were roughly the size as a person, but who knows what was inside that ball like shape.[break][break]

"6... 5... 4..." Ren closed his eyes as the timer dwindled, letting his muscles relax as his mind formed a picture. This as a simple one, it didn't need too much focus and the fact that it wouldn't be formed at range made it even easier. As his brain finished forming the blueprint, his eyes opened again and his stance shifted ever so slightly. "... 1... 0!" As the countdown finished, Ren only paused long enough to make sure that there was a target in front of him before unleashing a surge of ice from his feet. The large slab-like shape of a tower shield burst out of the ground beneath him, the mass catapulting the blonde forward and upward as it formed.
Shooting off toward the first target, Ren's eyes locked on the spherical shape of the combat drone. That was a bit odd... their design was different than those they had encountered during class. It was larger and the shell looked a good bit more durable than the ones he had dealt with before... maybe some support student upgraded them so that they wouldn't need to be replaced as often? Well, whatever, it was too late to worry about that now. Ren swung his weapon down to meet the charging droid, using his momentum to put as much force into the swing as he could muster. There was a loud clang as the bokuto slammed into the construct's armor, leaving behind a bit of a dent in the thing's chassis, but.... that was about it. The boy had only a brief instant to consider how strange that was as he hung there. That strike would have been enough to flatten one of the drones he faced in class, but this one had taken relatively light damage, hell it hadn't even slowed down all that much. Nope, it was definitely still moving forward and one of it's legs was...
Uh Oh.
Ren channeled his quirk again, another mass of ice quickly taking the shape of a simple shield as it expanded out from his knee. It barely got into place fast enough, leaving the boy just long enough to brace before one of the machine's appendages tried to swat him out of the air. The shield cracked as it absorbed the strike and Ren felt his momentum shift, sending him back the way he'd come from. He stumbled back a few steps when he once again met the ground, preventing himself from falling over but leaving him with only a second to think before the droid was upon him again. Hastily returning to his kendo stance, he darted around another swing from the thing's leg and countered with an overhead slash. His blow hit almost the exact same spot as his first attempt, and the metal once again gave slightly under the force, but far less than the original attack. In fact, it barely budged at all.
This wasn't going to work. Ren snatched the chunk of ice that still clung to his knee and attached it to his arm, bringing it up just in time to take another hit and send him skidding backward again. When he came to a stop, Ren noticed that his back was practically up against the tower shield he made, right back where he started. This was only the first one too... no, something was wrong here. "Uh... Elke, I might have messed up the settings a little." He called out as he ducked yet another attack, leaving the machine's leg to slam into the slab of ice behind him. There was another opening, but it was obvious enough that he wasn't getting anywhere aiming at the same area over and over again. This time he swung for the spot where one of the drone's legs met its body, finding purchase right on the thing's joint.
It certainly looked like a more effective attack, the whole machine's body shifting as the limb started to buckle under the pressure of the blow, but it seemed like just one hit wouldn't be enough to disable the appendage. As Ren tried to follow through, the leg from the opposite side lashed out and caught the boy before he could react properly. Ren winced as the limb slapped his side and proceeded to swat him back against the tower shield. The force of impact made him lose his grip on his bokuto and the weapon clattered to the ground as the drone continued to advance. He raised his shield to block another swing, but the ice had already taken a beating from the previous attacks. It managed to absorb the blow, but in doing so the structure gave way and shattered, spraying frozen shards over Ren and leaving him unarmed.
Seeing a chance to take him out, the droid reared back and raised both of its front limbs, the appendages aiming right for the student's torso. Ren didn't have any time to think his way out of the situation, he just reflexively placed on of his hands against the slab of ice behind him and formed the first shape that came to mind; the one that he had been practicing all morning. Just as the robot started to swing, a shaft of ice shot out from the surface beside Ren's head and lanced upward, right into the thing's single glowing eye. It's downward motion drove the halberd's blade even further in, piercing out the back of it's metal shell before it finally came to a halt, it's legs falling limp only about a foot away from Ren's chest.
The boy stood still for a moment, blinking several times before he was sure that the thing wasn't moving anymore, then letting out a sigh and shaking his head. Well, that was one. He couldn't help but glance up his handwork as he stepped out from the little cranny he had found himself in. It was by no means perfect, he had needed it fast, so he had naturally taken a few shortcuts on the details, but for something summoned up to quickly it had certainly done the job... guess that meant that he was getting the hang of that one after all. Still... these drones were way tougher than any he'd gone up against before. Trying to get through their armor just wasn't an effective strategy, and while their limbs seemed at least a little less durable, his last attack had proven that they had a very definitive weakspot. Not all that easy to hit in the middle of close combat, but it was better than nothing.
"Elke! Go for the eye!" He shout out, unsure if his classmate had already managed to figure that much out. Even if it was a competition, they were still supposed to be watching out for one another, that's what heroes did after all. His eyes caught movement as another shape began to roll down one of the tubes. Well, it made sense that they'd just keep coming. The question was, would they really be able to take out all of these things? Ren wasn't entirely confident given his first experience with these things, but at least now he had some form of game plan.

Elke quickly looked over her shoulder with a slightly worried expression only to see Ren had already dashed towards his own target. Biting her lip slightly, she knew she had to be brave this one moment, she had to put all of her worries aside and beat him at this simulation. That was her one chance to prove to Ren that she too was strong. Inside her head, her only thought was proving herself to her friend but in reality, she was just proving herself to well, herself. Kicking off her shoes with strange expertise, she crouched down and launched herself into the air, flying towards the large robot.[break][break]
Just as she was within range, the bot's eye seemed to shift lights as it honed directly onto her; she was fast, really fast, but the robot was able to keep up. An arm lunged straight toward her, causing her to shift herself quickly to launch further up, missing the arm by a bit. "Woah! These things are quick!" As if in response she reached the ball itself, fired a quick blast from her chest to slow herself down, before shoving her arm into the joint of the machine. "Nice try!" A quick blast of air released point blank into what she hoped was the weakest point on the droid. What she didn't know, was the droid was already swinging one of its other limbs around to grab her, and her own blast launched her back, dodging the attack once more. To her surprise, its arm swung down, grabbing itself before falling backward from the sudden force. It was around this time that Ren mentioned the incorrect settings.[break][break]
With a graceful back-flip, Elke landed on the ground with a roll, quickly scrambling to her feet as the bot itself stood up. "YOU THINK!?" She had seen training drones before, but these seemed more like a full on boss fight. Just what settings did Ren set it to? One could tell that her strike seemed to anger it as she could hear very loud droning noises that reminded one of translated code or ancient dial-up before the combat droid sucked it's arms into its body while lunging at Elke. The distance between the two was rather large, but it still closed the gap very quickly in this rolling ball form. Panicked, she stood up and started running away from the ball itself. Now with the ball chasing her back towards the center of the ring, Elke couldn't help but scream in panic while she bolted away from it, using a single boost to make herself move faster and faster to escape the giant rolling death machine. Off in the distance, she could see Ren also in a precarious situation before a large frozen halberd flung itself into the droid's eyes. Impressive, she thought to herself, that was something she could never have do-; a loud exploding sound from behind her cut off her thought process.[break][break]
Turning around with wide eyes, it seems the ball-droid had redeployed its limbs, and it's armed reached forward with incredible speed. Jumping back, Elke expected it to be a quick punch and for her to immediately be sent flying, but instead, she felt something clamp around her left leg. Fear immediately filling her eyes, she was yanked back towards the drone, dangling upside down in the air, lifting her up to its face. Her mind began to rapidly process her situation but inevitably overloaded as she went into 'damsel in distress' mode. "AAAAHH! HILF MIR! HILF MIR!" As she started screaming for help, the bot swung her side to side, before stopping, it's eye staring straight at Ren. She had no idea what it was about to do, and in attempts to get out of its grasp she began pounding away at the metal claw around her feet; it was hopeless, she lacked the strength to break free, and the droid knew that.[break][break]
All Elke could do was hope that Ren was able to take down this robot, or at least free her from its grasp.[break]

Using what little time he had before the next enemy appeared, Ren pried the halberd free of the disabled machine and retrieved his Bokuto off the pavement, using his quirk to form a simple harness to help hold the equipment. Wasting as little ice as possible was in his best interest, especially considering how long he had been practicing before they got there. Already the air around him was a good couple of degrees colder than his surroundings, and every little extra bit helped when it came to his quirk's drawbacks.
Just as the boy was about to slide the frozen blade into place in the harness, there was a dull metallic thud in the distance. The droid that had been headed down the pipe dropped onto the street down one of the lanes that hadn't been used yet, and quickly started to deploy itself. No sooner did its limbs break free of its shell then Ren heard a cry for help from behind him. Spinning around he saw the other machine that Elke had been dealing with, one of it's claws locked around the girl's leg as it waved her around in front of it. Alright, this wasn't the best situation, she was panicking so it wasn't really likely that she would be able to get herself out... He checked the new arrival to see it already advancing towards the intersection, then looked back towards Elke again, eyes narrowing. Some distant part of his mind tried to remind him that these things were designed to not leave any lasting injuries on their targets, but his body was already moving.
Throwing a hand out toward the incoming threat, Ren formed as large a wall as he could, sacrificing durability and thickness so that he could cover as much of the street as possible. It only had to hold out long enough for him to get to the other one... which luckily wasn't that far away. He broke into a sprint, his grip tightening around the handle of the bokuto as he noticed the machine's red eye glare at him. Aside from shaking Elke around a bit, it was just standing there, almost like it was daring him to approach and try to steal back its prize. As the blonde approached, the droid shifted its arm back to keep his friend out of reach, and then proceeded to swing with one of its free limbs. Ren dropped and slid under the swipe, rolling back to his feet before he threw a slash at the limb that held his classmate. Just before he could connect however, the drone shifted around, swinging one of it's 'rear' legs to meet the attack and send the boy skidding back several feet.
Ren clenched his teeth as he felt the force transfer through his weapon and found himself glaring up at the robot when he came to a stop. It almost felt like it was making fun of him as it returned to it's previous position. Not only that, but it seemed like his attack pattern wasn't working as well anymore. Maybe they got better at reacting as the students took them down? Either that or they just were collectively adapting to him on the fly. That was probably the more likely scenario actually... but looking at it now, the machine's gaze seemed to be aimed more towards his weapon than him. As he considered his next move, a loud crashing sound from the side signaled the other droid breaking through his wall as the chunks of ice flew through the air. No more time to think about it.
Rushing forward again, Ren decided to mix things up a bit this time. Just before he entered the bot's attack range he lashed out with his bokuto, hurling the frozen blade right at it's eye. As expected, it moved it's limb to swat the weapon aside, but as it did the blonde pulled the halberd from his harness and channeled his quirk. A forming shield launched him up into the air, and as he passed over the swinging appendage he formed a second shield from his feet. This one trapped the droid's leg as it formed and Ren used the extra boost in his momentum to drive his polearm towards the thing's eye. It tried to spin around again to bring one of it's other limbs to bear, but the chunk of ice locked it place long enough for the boy's strike to hit home. The sound of shattering glass gave way to rending metal as the blade pierced the machine's 'head', and it's eye went dark.
Two down.
There wasn't any time to celebrate however, since the other drone was practically right on top of them now. Ren ripped his weapon free and kicked off it's shell to grab Elke before she fell from the now unpowered grip. "Hold on." He warned her before immediately taking off for the nearest building and diving through a window. A second after they cleared the frame, the whole structure shook as the droid crashed into the outer wall, finding itself unable to smash through the hardened frame and get at the students within. Sliding to a stop, Ren made sure that the machine wasn't getting through before setting Elke down. "You alright?" He asked as he kept an eye on their foe, which had started moving around the perimeter of the building to look for an entrance.
"This is definitely tougher than expected... If you want to stop, we can. Just need to leave the floor and it will automatically shut down." He said as he turned back toward his classmate. "If you want to keep going though, we should probably try to work together a bit more if we want to have a chance." He held out his hand and took a second to form another one of the polearms before offering it to the small German. "What do you say?"

Elke continued to flail until the giant bot stopped moving. Such sudden stillness had to be warranted, which prompted her to open her eyes to see what was happening. The bot had stopped moving, it's eye no longer on her but now focused on her blonde compatriot. In the distance a loud thud was heard, followed by another droid being released down one of the other lanes that hadn't been used yet. "Whoah whoah! There's mo-" Her voice was cut off as it seemed that Ren had already launched his attack on the droid.[break][break]
A large ice wall had been erected against the new droid, and as soon as it had been raised, Ren had approached. Trying to keep Elke captured, it instinctively dangled her further away from the blonde warrior while swinging at him with one of its other legs; it only had two left to keep itself stable. It missed and knowing the objective, watched as Ren's blow swung toward the arm holding Elke. Spinning as quick as it could, it swung one of its other legs into the way while planting the arm it had just missed with onto the ground. These drones would be killer at twister.[break][break]
As if to taunt Ren, it dangled Elke high in the air, bouncing slightly as if laughing. "Take it down already!" Elke panicked, pushing her shirt back down as the burst of usage of her quirk had thinned her enough to make it not be nowhere near as form fitting. Watching in glee, her eyes followed Ren as his battle continued once more. This droid didn't seem to know how to handle her classmate's cryokinesis, and as the other got eliminated, this one did too; just as loud crashing was heard from nearby. The other droid had broken through the ice! Too many things were happening all at once, and Elke's mind was starting to fry from all the events; pretty soon she would be running on autopilot.[break][break]
Just as the droid holding her captive perished, it's claw relinquished it's grip with her still high in the air. Oh no, that meant she was falling now. Elke knew her quirk was useless when she was upside down, and this meant she was consigned to her fate. Closing her eyes and accepting what was to come, she instead felt something grab hold of her. Eyes popping open from the sudden change of events, she looked up into the eyes of her saviour. To her, this moment could last fore- and just like that it ended; the words 'hold on' told her exactly what to do. Gripping tightly to her classmate she was quickly chauffered into one of the nearby buildings just as the robot smashed down.[break][break]
Now they had stopped, and finally had a brief time to rest. Despite the respite, Elke was still on edge, able to hear the drone stomping around outside the building, trying to find a way in. "I-I'm fine." Elke blurted out, her cheeks completely red. "I-I... I totally had him where I wanted him!" A hmph sound popped from her cheeks as she panicked slightly, trying to appear as tough as she could for Ren. It seemed as though Ren noticed it was extremely tough as well, and nobody dared call Elke a quitter. With a smirk on her face, Elke quickly replied. "What, you thinking of quitting? Nah we got this. It's just one of them right? This time, you distract him and I'll blow off it's head!" Puffing out her chest with a heroic pose she knew that she was just being a distraction, yeah that was it. Her damsel in distress mode totally was not because she was being dangled upside down by a robot ten times her size![break][break]
If her teammate was keen of eyes, he would notice that Elke was considerably thinner than she was when they started, having used most of her quirk, her form looking like that of a normal high school student rather than a voluptuous adult.[break]

A smirk formed across Ren's face as Elke's attitude seemed to recover from the momentary lapse. He liked how easily that boisterous confidence seemed to come to her in spite of how the odds looked at the moment. Having someone like that around certainly made it easier for him to push himself a bit more. "I never said I was giving up, but we've got to play this carefully if we want to get through this. If this is anything like the exercises we had in class, it's just going to get harder from here." He warned, passing the weapon in his hand over to the girl so that she'd have a means of attack outside of her quirk. Because of their added range, the polearms were proving to be far more useful than his bokuto at taking the machines down, but they were a good bit more unwieldy as well. It would probably work better for Elke though, since she could just build up a bunch of speed and charge if she needed to.
Ren's eyes went back to the droid as the girl proposed her plan. It was a decent enough idea, the things only had one eye and a limited number of limbs it could make use of, so if he could keep it busy Elke could swoop in and take it out when the chance presented itself. Based on his experiences so far, he thought he could probably manage that if he focused on defense instead of trying to find an opening, at least for a little while. "Yeah, okay. Just be sure you don't make me wait too long, alright?" He grinned again and picked his halberd up off the floor, then turned to make for the nearest exit onto the street.
The boy didn't even have to shout to grab the machine's attention as he walked outside, it was already staring right at him. With a slight chuckle and a flex of his free hand, a combat style shield took shape along his arm. "Lass uns das machen." The droid wasted no time in closing the distance, folding it's legs back into its main body and then starting to rapidly build up speed as it rolled. Ren dashed out of the way, barely making it clear as the sphere continued on and crashed into the wall of the building behind. As the drone's head popped back out to look at it's target, the first year crept in a bit closer to draw out its limbs again. If he stayed too far back it would just keep rolling, and that didn't give Elke a proper target to aim at.
Stepping in a few more feet, he got exactly what he was asking for; the legs popped back out and the machine immediately started striding toward him. As before, it started its assault the instant it got into range, lashing out one limb at a time even as it continued to advance. Ren sidestepped a vertical slam, ducked another from the side, and danced around a straight thrust. He was playing defensive this time, not trying nearly as hard to find an opening and instead just focusing on not getting slapped by the flailing limbs. That's all he had to do to give Elke the chance she needed, but it was much easier said than done with these things.
Just as he evaded yet another overhead swing, the drone followed up with a low sweep from it's other limb. Ren tried to hop over it, but found himself a little slow and felt the metallic appendage bat at one of his ankles. He moved enough that it hadn't been able to get a grip, but it did knock him off his feet, allowing the machine to drew even closer as he hit the ground. Reflexively rolling to the side, Ren was able to avoid a follow up grab, but he was in a pretty bad position. A rough counter with his halberd found purchase against one of the thing's legs and it buckled slightly in response before throwing another irritated swing the boy's way. His shield came up in time to meet it, but it wasn't anywhere near enough to absorb all the force of the attack, sending him tumbling back several feet before he came to rest on his stomach. Now he was in an even worse position, he thought as he glanced up as the drone looming over him. "Jederzeit, Elke" He pushed himself up and prepared his shield arm for another strike.
