On a day like this, Umeko would normally be sneaking away to eat her lunch outside. Sunny, light breeze, perfect temperature... perfect combination. Unfortunately, someone managed to catch her just before she reached the exit, ushering her back to the cafeteria to have lunch with her peers. To converse and make friends. Like a normie. As she made her way back, tray in hand, she grumbled to herself. Why did it matter if she didn't want to eat inside? She lingered in the doorway, her grip on the tray tightening as she scanned through the available tables. A table with a few empty seats, full of 1-A... Umeko scowled. Why would she sit with underclassmen? That's a stupid idea. There was another table with a few intermingling 3-A and 2-A... tempting, but it was preferable to her to avoid the company of 3-A. Mainly because she just thought they acted condescending towards their underclassmen. Not that Umeko really cared about respecting them either. Her frustration grew, as the more she tried to decide on where to sit (this is a very crucial part of highschool life), the more she realized that she didn't spend enough time with her classmates.Umeko took a few steps forward, hoping that she'd see another table in the distance. It didn't take long for her wishes to come true. Was that... a lone 2-A student...? It sure was. Oliver, of all people. Not that she talked to him much. And if she did, it was probably a snide comment in passing. Furthering the distance that was already between them, most likely. But however awkward it may be, she was going to shoot her shot and at least try to make a friend. She slammed her tray down on the table (first mistake), and sat down in front of Oliver, giving him a very intense stare. "...Hey." i'll see you in the next life

show me The second year was known for many things but probably the most notable of them was his incessant need to be clean all the time. It almost always appeared that the man had some kind of handkerchief or other tool for cleaning on him. Also due to this obsession with cleanliness he found himself often pushing himself away from the messier social circles of people. Human interaction was inherently unclean. You paid no mind to where your food was flying, drinks could be knocked over, and some of the worst kinds would be the obnoxious kids who spewed their food out of their pig-like mouths when talking.
The thought alone was enough to make Oliver cringe.
Thus, he found himself off in the corner after being cut off as the school was attempting to make the upperclassmen be more social. Thus he was stopped amidst his usual retreat to the dorms for lunch time. He let out an dissatisfied growl as he took a seat as far from other students as possible. At least they wouldn't bother them all the way over here, and would keep their food and opinions to themselves. Or at least that's what he thought going in.
As he was toying with a piece of food with his chopsticks there was a crashing sound that disrupted his peaceful moment. Almost as if on queue with his bowl starting to spew up some broth, Oliver's handkerchief was already out and ready to eradicate the mess that had been created in response. If one would consider a couple of drops on the table to be a "mess" of any sorts. Still, the person who had done it was a classmate at least from what he could remember. However, to be frank Oliver never took the time to memorize names of those he's not close with (all 0 people he was close with).
"Please refrain from such harsh action in the future," He spoke in a calm, unwavering tone. He pocketed the handkerchief and looked towards Umeko with a look that told her everything she needed to know: I'd prefer to be alone but I cannot tell you to leave. Perhaps that was why the next thing from his lips were, "and what brings you to this table with me today?"

"Harsh? Pffft," Umeko waved him off, watching with a smirk as he started to dab at the spilled liquid from where she might have slammed her tray down a bit too hard. ...God, what kind of soup was he eating, anyways? It looked disgusting. It's not like she had any room to judge. Today was a basic sandwich day, but now that she had thought about it she didn't actually feel like eating. What a waste. With a slight nudge, Umeko pushed her tray aside, giving her room to place one of her elbows on the table, propping her head up. "They caught me before I could sneak outside..." Her face contorted into a scowl, glaring at the nearest figure of authority in the room. Hall monitors, the bane of her existence. If it wasn't for them, she'd be taking a nap under a nice tree right now... it wouldn't kill her to be a bit more alert, given recent events, but the thought didn't really cross her mind. Until now. She'll forget about it in a few minutes. She turned her attention back towards Oliver, still sporting that same look of disdain. "But just so ya know, I'm not here willingly! I jus' didn't wanna sit anywhere else." i'll see you in the next life

show me He eyed her questioningly, he had gone through a similar situation but unlike her he went out of his way to be as far away from them as he possibly could. Wait a second, maybe it wasn't so different at all. She seemed to be somewhat genuine in her approach. He was curious more than anything, he hadn't really contemplated the way that other people processed situations. Could it be to some extent that she was somewhat like him. He humoured the thought for a moment. "Sandwiches are hard to keep clean depending on the breads you use, a lot of them like to crumble."
He was at least making an attempt at small talk, something that he hadn't really done before. It was... awkward to say the least. His tone didn't seem to change or adjust. She didn't seem to be filthy or permeate any disgusting scents so, that's a positive. "I usually eat my food in the safety of my own room, I prefer the peace there to all the noise - not to mention the way others tend to eat is so filthy and careless. It's disgusting." He gently pulled a noodle from his soup, it was a simple beef ramen. Depending on how acute her smell was she'd probably be able to to at least catch a whiff of ginger and a very slight, very small hint of the smell of garlic mixing with it.
"Feel free to remain here as long as you handle the way you're eating with care," he spoke in a callous manner but if she was paying attention even behind the harsh tone was a bit of an invitation. Or at least, there was a lack of hostility there. With a tone such as Oliver's it was somewhat hard to tell the difference between the two.

She didn't think too hard about where she sat. But now, being here with Oliver. At this lunch table, at this very minute, Umeko was suddenly regretting her decision to sit with Oliver. Her eyes danced between the sandwich and the ramen, contemplating whether or not she actually wanted to eat. She only really grabbed food because she felt hungry at the time, but with the unsustainable smell of garlic slowly making its way to her... her mind began to work against her. "Never thought about eatin' in my room..." Trailing off, Umeko slowly started to slide the tray back in front of her. "Maybe I should start packin' my lunch or somethin' like that and chill in my dorm." It dawned on her that she didn't exactly take the time to talk to any of her 2-A classmates, so she was completely lacking on the small talk department. To be fair, she was already lacking on the small talk department to begin with. And she hardly paid attention to what the boy in front of her was saying. God, as much as she hated it, she might as well talk about actual classwork. That'll be one thing in common between the two. "Jeeeeez, that last assignment was kind of a bore, don'tcha think? I could go for somethin' much more intense next time!" i'll see you in the next life

show me Never before in his life had Oliver felt so strange about approaching a topic before. She seemed to complete dodge his comment about the bread thing. It was telling it wasn't a topic she cared much about. He pondered this for a moment as he listened to her response about eating in her dorm. He nodded solemnly in agreement. "I cook on a few occasions. Today just happened to be a case of one of those times I did not." He responded quietly. He wasn't lying.
He felt a bit nervous around her, something he didn't go through often. What about people made him so antsy like this? He didn't care about their thoughts or opinions in regards to him but at the same time he felt himself always get so wound up whenever he was interacting with someone for a prolonged bit of time. Then she said the thing about the assignment and he let out a bit too much of a laugh. Part of this was due to the fact he was feeling something nearly identical to what she described and partially because he was trying to act natural. Trying being the keyword in there.
"I can definitely agree," he said chuckling and rubbing his eyes as he tried to catch his breath from his prior outburst. Perhaps there was a bit more to this than he assumed, "I love to be challenged and driven to the edge of my limits, but a lot of the stuff they've given me so far well... there's a reason I'm nearly a week ahead on assignments." He replied looking to her, somewhat hoping that she pushed to excel as hard as he did. Not that it mattered that much anyway, after all he barely knew her and... really he didn't have any reason to care.

She absentmindedly began to munch on the sandwich, raising in eyebrow to show Oliver that she was listening. This dude seemed mildly pretentious. Even more pretentious than she initially pegged him for. Which wasn't a lot to begin with, because Umeko didn't really care about interacting with him. "Oh, yer a cook? Er... can cook," A slight smirk grew on her face. Of course he can cook. . "Isn't that.. kinda.. yanno... lame? Much more convenient to get some fast food or somethin'."Umeko started to zone out, accompanied by that same intense stare, thinking about how many burgers she could buy with the little amount of money she had in her pockets right now... maybe some cheeseburgers or something...? She managed to drop back into reality just in time to catch Oliver at the tail-end of a laugh, rubbing his eyes. Damn, did she really say something that funny? The expression on her face probably changed about three different times. From boredom, to disbelief, to mild annoyance. A week ahead?! This dude could not be a week ahead. Umeko was two weeks behind. No way. This was not acceptable. "A week ahead, huh?" She smiled, speaking through gritted teeth. It suddenly dawned on her exactly how she could turn this around. It could only go one way, but Umeko couldn't care less about the consequences of her actions. "Well, I guess ya still got some more catchin' up to do... Damn, I expected ya to be ahead of me, too."And boy, would this end up one giant dumpster fire. Would Oliver be able to see right through her very obvious lie? Most likely. i'll see you in the next life

show me Perhaps the initial statement about cooking was enough to tempt him to give into whatever she was baiting him into, but that wasn't enough to drive him to do much more than simply correct her incorrect outlook on the things that he did. "While it may be less convenient, the things I cook are exceptional and clean. Unlike something you could buy from some half-baked restaurant." He growled in return, his high and mighty attitude kicking up to eleven. Something about her irked him, but at the same time he wasn't sure if it was her or something different entirely.
"If you want to see my exemplary cooking then I'd happily do so after class today!" He growled out angrily, "I'm sure it's a million times better than anything you could purchase from some stupid fast food restaurant." His pride kind of outweighed the realization that he just offered to cook for someone. In fact, it even somehow managed to overpower his sense of desire to be isolated from the idiots around him. He just wanted to prove this girl wrong and he'd die trying if he had to. It wasn't going to be enough for him to give up like that.
Then she made the comment about school work and that was enough to channel no longer anger but... intrigue. Could it be that someone that he had written off as just another simpleton could actually have surpassed him in homework. It was time to find out. "Okay then, Miss. I have a question for you! What U.S. State is known as the Home of Heroes do to being the first one where laws were passed creating legal quirk usage programs?" He growled out in sharp retort. He knew the answer was Rhode Island and it came to be with the "Rhode Island New State Statute".
But did she? ulla what it's like

Man, Umeko got the impression that this dude liked to showboat more than she did. Like... way more. She raised an eyebrow as he spoke, giving him an expression that suggested doubt. Press X to doubt. "I'unno... like, can ya make chicken nuggets like our fast food gods can? I don't think so." Not that the chicken nuggets from rundown fast food restaurants could potentially compare to whatever gourmet chicken nuggets the best chef could crank out. Maybe this dude can make gourmet chicken nuggets. She'd still argue against them, though. "Eh, sure. Why not. I'll humor ya and yer need to prove the inferiority of quick and easy food."She began to pull the crust off of the top piece of bread, deciding to eat that instead of the sandwich as a whole. "What U.S. state...?" Umeko blinked, multiple times. The gears in her brain were unfortunately covered in dust. What the hell was he even talking about? How many states did the U.S. have? "Uh..." Her mouth opened as if she was going to say something, but it quickly closed. What? God, she really needs to do her homework. Eventually. One day... but not today. Umeko put the bread crust down, clearing her throat. "I'm gonna be honest, dude. I have no idea what the answer to that is. Also, don't call me miss." i'll see you in the next life

show me There was a moment when he felt almost challenged. The blood rushed to his face as he tried to hold back the violent rage that was within him, but what it would appear to the rest of the world was a blush as she accepted his offer to cook her dinner. It wasn't that he liked her, that was not the reason he was offering to cook! It wasn't! Why are you looking at him like that??? Well, he wasn't going to take her backhanded compliment - he could make far superior chicken nuggets to what any "fast food god" could hope of making.
"Any nuggets you could get 10 of for less than 100 yen is hogwash!" He screamed in anger and frustration. "I will make you the greatest meal you've ever eaten! You'll love it so much you'll beg me to cook you food every single day!" He took a deep breath and it almost, somewhat, kinda, sorta looked like he was blushing AND pouting while he was at it. There was no way he would do such a thing, however. It was just a misunderstanding, a miscalculation of a prideful boy's expression of pride-filled spite at those who opposed his superiority.
He overflowed with superiority.
Her inability to answer the history question was more than enough to prove her wrong in his eyes, however. He let out a haughty laugh, one that couldn't have been matched by even the preppiest of prep school boys. He knew he was the victor once more but she didn't. With that triumphant laugh he turned to her with a grin, "The answer is Rhode Island." He smirked at her and with an expression that could only truly be read as "I won" proceeded to ask her in a cruel tone, "If not miss what should I call you?"
