Kuro's anticipation rose as he awaited the strike. Again time seemed to stretch on beyond its normal flow, and as soon as he saw Mitsuko so much as twitch his muscles went tense. As his classmate burst into motion and started to advance, Kuro could still feel that impulse in the back of his head. The desire to run away was still there, floating over him like a shadow, but... it wasn't overpowering this time. Just like the doubts that had been cluttering his mind it was just... farther away, small enough that it no longer commanded his full attention. For the first time he could actually suppress it and maintain his focus on the image as the attack approached, shifting his body to match what he'd seen from Mitsu and their instructor.
As Mitsuko threw her palm out, Kuro took a single step to the side and swung his arm up, meeting her forearm with his own and batting it aside. And there he paused for the briefest of moments. He'd... actually done it, hadn't he? Finally managed to face an attack without running away again. Feeling the impact ring through his arm, he noticed that his hands were shaking slightly again. It didn't feel the same as before though, not fear, perhaps.... anticipation?
With his confidence swelling, Kuro's body resumed motion, following through to complete the entire sequence as the image continued to advance in his head. One hand grabbed onto Mitsuko's sleeve while the other reached for the collar of her shirt. He knew all the steps by now, he'd seen it enough times, he just needed to actually do it. One step to the side and a light pull to shift her balance to one leg, swing his back foot forward and then hook it around the back of the leg to break the support, twist and apply more force to finish bringing her down and then throw with the hip. Kuro moved through the process almost robotically, no hesitation or second guessing getting in the way as he performed the basic throw. As he finished the maneuver he pivoted to face Mitsuko and reset into his stance before the reality of what had just happened hit him.
Blinking in surprise, he stood there for a long moment looking at his classmate. "...Did I just do that?"

Fundamental understanding [kuro/mitsuko]
⤜don't slack off now⤛ Her green eyes went wide, her strike actually being blocked. She was a bit too stunned to react, her idea had worked - that is what this meant right? In her moment of amazement, Mitsuko did not realize Kuro moved for a counter. It was not until she was falling back did she realize what was happening.
Her back slamming into the ground, Ack! Mitsuko's eyes bulged out a bit. Her body shook, feeling a bit disorientated. Ni...nice one… she’d laugh at herself. She remained laying on the ground for a while as Kuro came to the realization that he countered. Yea, you did! Congratulations! Mitsuko would say with excitement, a genuine smile stretching across her face for the second time since she struck him in the head.
While the fact was still sinking in, Mitsuko would push herself up off the floor. Slowly at first, she had to admit that he was able to perform a pretty solid slam. She watched Kuro still, not breaking her line of sight, not at least until he wanted her to. Ready to go again? she would ask from her seated position. While waiting for his reply, she’d bring a knee up to begin the process of standing once more.
Once she was erect again, she stumbled for a brief second, but quickly righted herself. Her own mother tossed her around like a ragdoll so she was pretty accustomed to getting right back up and back into training.

That... went far better than Kuro could have possibly predicted. Even on the chance that Mitsuko was taking it easy on him again, the results were still far and away above what he'd been able to accomplish so far. He'd barely even flinched when when the attack came his way. He may not have know exactly how his classmate's quirk worked, but it was clearly effective. So effective in fact that he was left a little dumbfounded about the shear contrast between how he felt at that moment versus how he felt squaring off against the mannequin earlier. It took Mitsuko's affirmation and the excited she wore along with it to break though the layer of shock, at which point a true smile began to creep across his own expression. When was the last time he'd had one of those without the mask up? He had to admit that it felt good. Really good actually.
As Mitsuko got back to her feet, Kuro did notice the particular way she went about it. She seemed to be very purposefully not break eye contact with him... she had been glancing away regularly whenever they spoke and even when they'd first tried to spar earlier, hadn't she? She definitely wasn't doing that anymore, which allowed him to make a few educated guesses about how her quirk functioned. Even as she asked if he was good to keep going he found himself wondering how long she could keep the effect going. Would he be able to feel it when she stopped? Had he actually broken through the wall of his, or would the perceived progress fall apart as soon as she looked away? Right now his gut said told him he would still be able to fight, but couldn't that just be an effect of his boosted confidence? Either way, for the time being he wanted to hold onto the feeling for as long as he could. To experience the confidence for real instead of faking it.
"As long as you're okay to keep going, sure." He confirmed, stepping back into his starting position and preparing for whatever Mitsuko could throw his way.

Fundamental understanding [kuro/mitsuko]
⤜don't slack off now⤛ Mitsuko smiled at her friend, glad that he was able to keep going. She thought of his head injury, As long as you are feeling alright enough to continue… she said with a touch of hesitation. I don’t want your concussion getting worse, her tone was a caring one - something that of a sister or mother would take. She would retake her stance, her eyes still remaining focused on him. Due to her quirk, she has been good at remembering faces - and noticing small details one may not pick up on unless they constantly stared at someone. Mitsuko was starting to notice some naturalness to Kuro. He seemed more real, and not as much of an act.
This side of Kuro, she definitely liked. Hopefully, she could help him coax it all the way out so it wasn’t triggered by her quirk. She had no doubt that her friend had an insurmountable quantity of potential, he was just hiding it behind his mask. A shell that she wants to shatter.
She would smirk slightly, then charge at Kuro. She’d stop just short of reaching him and twisted her body into a reverse kick, her heel aiming for his hip. Let’s see what you do with this! She’d boast happily. It was difficult keeping her eyes focused on him - but this would help her practice with her quirk. Out in the field there would surely be chances that people would try to distract her from using it - just being realistic.

Kuro answer Mitsuko's smirk with one of his own as they prepared for another exchange. In spite of his friend's concerns he wanted to keep going as much as they could. The off-balance feeling that he'd had since he woke up was still clinging to his mind, and a part of him knew that they really should stop so that he could rest, but... he was doing his best to put it off. Was that an effect of Mitsuko's quirk, or was it just that the boosted confidence it gave him felt so good?
The question wasn't one that he had much time to consider, as his friend once again went into action. With the girl approaching, Kuro tightened his guard and watched her movements carefully. It was another relatively straight-forward attack, probably kept simple for his sake, and he could see her once again shifting into a lower stance in preparation for a kick. Luckily it seemed the she was keeping to her word about not aiming particularly high, and Kuro's mind snapped back to the lessons they learned in class. The best way to counter a kick was to either avoid it completely or... you could rob it of it's power. Rather than ducking away like he had the last time he faced such an attack, the boy advanced; stepping in close. Doing his best to mimic the instructors movements, he braced himself and went to catch Mitsuko's leg as it made contact with his side. The idea was that by getting in closer he'd be able to intercept it before she could put her full strength behind the attack.
That being said, his classmate was still had a pretty hefty advantage when it came to experience, and as the Mitsuko's leg hit his hip, it struck with more force than he'd been anticipating. He wasn't properly braced and he stumbled to the side slightly, but his uniform tugged against him; the command he gave helping to keep him anchored when the blow probably would have knocked him off his feet normally. While the added support was probably cheating a bit, there wasn't much he could do about it now, instead allowing his mind to finish playing out the sequence. With his grip on Mitsuko's leg Kuro once again attempted the full counter, lifting upward and pushing back against his classmate to try to disrupt her balance while swing his foot out to try and knock out her supporting leg. This one wasn't near as clean as the last, with a brief delay caused by the time it took to regain his footing, but progress was still progress.

Fundamental understanding [kuro/mitsuko]
⤜don't slack off now⤛ Mitsuko felt Kuro sway as her heel made an impact, she was about to drop the kick when she realized he had a hold on her. Her eyes drifted from his face down to where he held her by the leg as her body fell back. She positioned herself to do a back handspring to keep her from falling again, however it began. A sharp pain shot through her temples, so instead of bracing herself for a tumble, Mitsuko grasped her head. Just as when Kuro managed to block and counter, Mitsuko came crashing down to the ground. Her vision was blurring due to the pain in her head, but she kept her eyes open and focused.
Nnyeh… Mitsuko groaned, good job with that counter… she’d give Kuro a half smile from her position down on the ground. A hand still clenched in her hair holding onto her head. Mitsuko’s tone was significantly less excited, and sounded almost tired. She waited until she only saw one Kuro before even attempting to get up. Mitsuko removed her hand from her head to stand. She pushed her hands against her knees and slowly pushed herself up. Let’s get some more in, if you’re ready, Mitsuko gave Kuro a brave smile - however it was very noticeable she was not feeling like her usual peppy self.
She would stagger back into her beginning position, the sharp pain throbbing in her head. However, she pushed the pain off to the side to focus on helping her friend. She knew she was going to regret it later - but that’s a later problem. She can still stand for now, maybe a bit shaky in the knees.

Something went wrong as Kuro moved to topple Mitsuko. Despite the difference in skill, just as he moved to sweep her leg out, his friend dropped guard and moved a hand to her head as if in pain. And then she hit the ground hard. The boy winced at the force of the impact and immediately broke stance and moved to check on her. Luckily she seemed to be in one piece, but was still holding her head as she tried to get up. "Hey, are you alright?" He asked as he knelt down beside her, offering a hand to help her up that she evidently ignored as she climbed up herself. What was that about? Had she hit her head when he threw her the first time, or was this something else?
Despite Mitsuko's insistence that they continue, he hesitated to jump right back into things. With how emotive the girl tended to be, it was pretty obvious when something was amiss even for someone that wasn't as observant as Kuro. The smile was forced and even her posture had become far less steady. She was forcing herself, he could see that, and yet.... That feeling was still with him. That wonderful sensation of assuredness and control, he didn't want to let go of it, not yet. And so despite his concern, Kuro slowly nodded, pushing himself back to his feet. "...Alright."
As the boy rose however, another wave of dizziness hit him like a wall. Bringing a hand to his head in a gesture that Mimicked Mitsuko's from a moment before, Kuro swayed. He braced himself as he tried to adjust, expecting his uniform to once again help him regain balance, but this time nothing happened. The command had expired without him noticing and now the ground was rushing up to meet him. Sticking both hands out, he managed to catch himself and slow the fall at the last minute, flopping gracelessly onto his stomach. "On second thought..." He mumbled into the mat as he forced himself to shift. Rolling over onto his back, he pulled himself into a sitting position looked up at his friend with an embarrassed smile. "...Maybe we should call it here for the day?"

Fundamental understanding [kuro/mitsuko]
⤜don't slack off now⤛ The ringing in her ears and the throbbing pain of her head drowned out Kuro's words. She could barely make out anything he said. Her vision cleared just enough to see she had ignored an offered hand, I'm so sorry.. she said, breathily. I'm alright, the blonde lied. Her voice cracking as she fibbed. On shaky knees, she slid into her ready stance.
She couldn't quite tell if Kuro was swaying or she was, in all honesty - it was probably the both of them. The blur that Kuro became had crashed down to the ground. Mitsuko stepped to help her friend, only to have her own legs give out from underneath her. Face planting onto the ground. The pain in her temples screamed at her as her chin hit the ground. Mitsuko wasn't even awake long enough to hear Kuro inquiry for the day to end. Her quirk was activated for too long, and she had passed out on the ground. Her green eyes closed and covered by her blonde hair.

Before the words had even finished leaving his mouth, Kuro saw movement. At first he thought Mitsuko might have just been kneeling down toward him, but the movement was too fast and the posture wasn't right. "Mitsu...?" What he was seeing only registered at the last second, and the boy practically threw himself forward, smashing his way through another wave of dizziness in the process. He wasn't fast enough to stop the fall, but his outstretched hand found one of his friend's shoulders and he did his best to slow the motion. It wasn't much, but it was something; just enough resistance to turn her slightly and prevent a head-on impact.
Kuro lay there beside his friend for a long moment, his own head pounding terribly at the forced exertion. It hurt. He wanted to just close his eyes, rolling up into a ball, and shut it all out. Surely there was nothing he could do, right? He was him, he'd just screw it all up like always. Better if he just stayed out of the way and-
No. No more of that, not now. A spark in his mind fought back. Mitsu was hurt and he was the only other person there. Kuro groaned softly as he sat up, forcing himself to push through both the physical discomfort and the flood of negativity that had returned now that the girl's quirk was no longer effecting him. After she worked so hard to help him, he had to do something, no matter how much the voices in the back of his head were telling him to just run away from it all again. The boy took a deep breath as he shifted back into a sitting position again, waiting for the world around him to stop wavering before leaning in to check on Mitsuko. The girl was still breathing, thankfully, but seemed to be otherwise unresponsive.
Despite the fog in his head, Kuro forced his brain to work through the situation, the gears within grinding into motion again. First thing was first, he had to roll her over as carefully as possible. He wasn't in a position to do it himself, but he still had some breath left in him. Laying one hand on her back, Kuro imagined a motion like a pair of medics lifting a stretcher and breathed in. "Turn her over." His eyes flashed as Mitsu's clothing accepted the command and started to stir, shifting as it pulled on her and slowly flipped her onto her back. In a moment the breath that had left him returned, it's task completed. So what was next? He had never hit her particularly hard in their practice, and whatever had been effecting her had come on rather quickly near the end, so... the most likely culprit was something to do with her quirk. He didn't know any of the specifics about it though, and so also didn't know exactly what he needed do to help. The faculty would though, he just needed to get the nurse and-
As he tried to rise Kuro found no strength in his legs, another burst of disorientation slamming into him with the force of a wrecking ball and landing him solidly on his backside again. "Alright, not going anywhere..." He mumbled to himself, one hand to his temple as he forced himself to keep thinking. If he couldn't go to the nurse, then he needed to bring them here. His phone would be in his bag on the other side of the room, but it would probably take him a few minutes to crawl over there, and he had a faster option. Reaching to his feet, Kuro pulled on his shoelaces, unfastening them from the sneakers before taking another breath in. "Fetch the Nurse." This time as he spoke the words the boy could feel his chest almost completely empty of air, his lungs straining as though he'd just run an entire marathon and his voice fading to a whisper on his lips. Still though, the command took hold and the lace twisted itself into an outline of a tiny little person, who gave a quick salute to Kuro before unraveling and snaking off toward the door nearly as fast as the boy would have been able to run.
And... that was about all he had. The ash-haired boy timidly reached out and took hold of Mitsuko's hand even as his lungs gasped with the after-effects of his own quirk. Once again someone hurt because of his own weakness, a friend trying to help him. This couldn't keep happening, the spark inside seemed to shout. He'd managed to do something this time, but it was still his fault in the end. He still had to get stronger, be better than he was. In spite of everything he tried to do in the past few months, today was just more proof that he wasn't there yet.
