At least it's warm, Sam mused as she walked down the street, headphones spraying some old theme song into her ears.
Musutafu was lovely she had to admit, and the warmer climate felt nice on her spines. She knew she should feel excited, it was less than a week until her first day at UA, a notable hero school on the world stage. Well, she was excited, but she was also anxious. Really anxious. She'd live here while her family went home, her sister and dad had already left while her mom and sister would see her off on her first day before flying home. It was her first time away from them and Sam didn't have the same independent streak other teens did. She had so much going through her head that she'd decided to go out, try to learn the town, and hopefully try to make it a home.
But a home has people you trust and feel comfortable around. While lost in thoughts, she knew people gave her a wide berth. It was almost comical how tall she was in comparison to the folk around, and while her clawed hands were fully shoved into her pockets, the jagged spines and long scaled tail were impossible to hide. It dragged along the concrete behind her, creating a wake in the crowd.
She didn't like feeling like a monster, and she hoped UA and the students there would help her. But for now, she glanced up at the window. There were a variety of lovely skirts, tops and jackets. It felt almost insulting to look on them in her own frayed ones. A corner boutique of some sort. She sighed, she felt better of herself for starting to transition, but she still looked upon nice things she'd never have. Even if she had the money....
No use in being sad, it's too easy here. I can't stop feeling anxious, so I just need to make the best of it.
Sam took a step towards the corner, once again lost in thought.

The streets of Musutafu were full of shops - some peddling ‘high end’ fashion - some shop windows even advertised beautiful garments of ‘enchanting’ origin - fabrics of beautiful colors that couldn't have even been imagined. All she felt in the end as she walked through the cobblestone paths and worn streets of the shopping area was a deep disconnect - and a maybe little oh... left out. In her hometown she was used to thrift shops and hand-me-downs, fabrics forgotten by time, so to be in a world full of new ‘up and coming trends’ felt foreign. Clutching her handmade purse/ backpack she wandered the streets with her eyes ablaze with inspiration and her wallet lined with money - unaccompanied by any parental supervision as the last couple weeks had been nothing more than a prolonged silence when she was in the presence of her family. All they could do now as a family unit was co-exist and that was painfully obvious to her, so she preferred time spent separate from them.
So with these new surroundings she felt a real taste of freedom - at least since her life had taken its turn for change. Perhaps it was this fact that it didn't strike Himari as odd when she came across a girl, limbs fading into an Ombre of scales and claws all adorned with a tail that held a beautiful merging of Indigo and Cyan… or was it Ultramarine? It took her a few moments before she realized she had been staring from a few storefronts away - luckily she engrossed in a window display in one of the ‘higher end’ stores that she had passed in an earlier once-over of the street. There was a bit of longing in the girl’s face as she stared at the garments, and only then did Himari really notice the clothes she was wearing were frayed and worn - narrowing her eyes slightly she gauged the clothes couldn’t have been that old… so why the fray.. OH.
With a sudden change in her demeanor she watched as the girl turned from the shop window and continued on her way - before she was truly aware of it she had hurried along to catch up with the girl - grabbing her arm in as gentle a grasp as she could. The moment the girl turned to look at her she would release her grasp, pulling her hands back to her chest in a tentative manner - her shoulders pulled down to convey sincerity. “Hey, sorry to… stop you like that but I couldn’t help but notice you were looking at the clothes in that shop window a few moments ago. I was… curious why you didn’t go in and try any on? The colors would compliment you so much you have no idea.” As she spoke her face was alight with wonder and a little curiosity - though she made sure not to hold eye contact for too long as a sign of respect. “Oh god sorry! I’m Himari by the way, Himari Ohta. Who are you?” Her hand flashed out and stopped, held waiting for her to return her handshake. “I’m just out doing some browsing, did you want to join me?”

Sam twitched in surprise, complete with a ripple down her tail, at the sudden contact on her arm. She didn't think she'd hit anything? Her body twisted, causing her tail to curve slightly, to look at the strange blue haired girl that had gotten her attention. She was saying something, Sam hurriedly pulled her phone to pause the music and pull down her headphones to hear. Usually she could guess pretty well what shopkeeps were saying to her, but a strange girl in the street? 'I'm sorry, what did you say?' she cringed inwardly at the sound of her tongue tripping on some of the syllables, but she was confident it was understandable, and hoping it didn't mark her out for conmen.
She listened to the smaller girl's name, and couldn't help but flush a little at the thought of something complimenting her. She couldn't help but be guarded. The odds of any one person being a swindler were pretty low, but it'd be in the back of her mind almost constantly. Sam realised she wasn't paying attention, letting her thoughts drift. Instead she looked down at the eyes of Himari, the shift in light causing her own repitillian eyes to narrow to slits. You were always supposed to make eye contact with someone you were talking too, it's polite right? Instead the girl looked away. Sam realised the Sun was mostly behind her. That must be it! It'd be blinding to Himari to try to look up, Sam was over a foot taller and would be silhouetted by it. Instead she too a step closer to Himari, so her shadow covered the girl, hoping it would help.
'I'm Riley Sam.. I mean Samantha Riley,' she looked down at the offered hand, then back to Himari, just staring as she didn't know what else to do with her eyes. She was hesitant to take it, she didn't exactly like the coarse scales or strong claws. She filed them down as best she could, but her work was... uneven. Wait, she'd already pulled her hand out to pause her phone, Himari had already seen it, so it didn't really change anything, but a refusal was rude. A part of her mind told her not to read too much into the handshake over a bow, Japan was gradually gaining influences from other cultures.
'Th-thank you, but I doubt anything in there would fit me... it's easier to keep wearing what I know fits...' she slowly enveloped the hand and tried to gently shake it. She could mention the back spines tended to shred things, but that was probably too obvious, or that she wasn't really comfortable showing more of her body but that was probably TMI for a first meeting. Refusal was about to follow up, but she recalled she needed to make Musutafu her home, she'd have to take a risk on people at some point. She'd just play it guarded until she was confident Himari wasn't a threat.
'Sure... I'm just kinda walking though... not really looking for anything.' Again she cursed her strong accent, but it was something she just had to be patient with.
