“Come back!”
How had it come to this? Chihiro’s morning had started off nicely enough. Get presentable for her morning jog, complete her circuit by stopping to check her post office box (she preferred business matters not be sent to her apartment), and stop to grab breakfast to go from a nearby cafe. She had stopped in the park to enjoy the sunrise and read her mail, which consisted of just one letter. She’d set it on the bench beside her. The petite woman swung her legs idly back and forth; the bench was a little too tall for her, but that was okay! She happily chewed her breakfast as she started to read. She got all the way to it addressing her by her hero name and something about collective strength when the wind picked up. It played with her soft, fluffy hair…
And, blew her letter away, right into the happy, waiting maw of a rat.
Which was how Chihiro ended up doing what she was now, pressing her hands against the sides of a building as she shimmied her way up between them. Thank goodness she was already in her exercise outfit, otherwise this would have been a pain.
Finally reaching the roof’s edge, she pushed herself up and over.
“Stoooooop,” she wailed, big fat tears leaking out of her cheeks on occasion. What if that letter was an invitation to an agency?! What if it was another hero trying to collaborate with her?! She hated working alone! She wanted teammates again! That letter might have been her key to not flying solo!
But, as she reached the roof, she realized she couldn’t spot the rat. She trembled, lower lip wavering as fiercely as the rest of her form. She dropped onto her butt, back of her hands dragging across her eyes as she moved from tearing up to full on sobbing.
“Mm… Mm! My letteeeeeer!” she blubbered.
Good morning, Musufatu. If you didn’t set an alarm for 6:15 AM, you now have one in the form of a tiny crybaby on a roof.

Isamu’s sleep schedule was something of a chaotic beast. He hand long battled his natural inclinations to be active at night due to needing to be active during the day to function along with most of the rest of society. This meant making compromises, either sleeping in short naps through the day or going to bed early or late to give his psyche some nighttime activity to keep it happy.
This particular morning had been one where he got up early to do some training of his quirk. The cat-like student had risen and dressed in a plain midnight blue t-shirt and black shorts, taking off from U.A. into the city to skulk around. The city was large and crowded, full of a multitude of scents and aromas all crisscrossing each other in conflicting ways. If he was going to use his nose to track a fleeing felon or to track down a missing person or object, he’d have to be able to track it quickly and through messy, small-laden environments. Exposing himself to more scents and being mindful of what they were would also help broaden his knowledge, although he was still trying to work on the teachers to get access to some more… sensitive materials to learn on.
The student had spent a couple of hours taking a scent and following it as far as he could, until he either found the source or the trail went cold. It felt like a fruitful night, but it was getting time to head back and try to get at least a little bit of sleep before he started his day proper. He’d even found one or two things which he had not followed up on and instead reported to the police. Getting in the middle of unauthorized heroics was not a mistake he’d be making again anytime soon.
Still, as he passed by a certain building he couldn’t help but hear the wailing of a—he stopped, turning his head about and finally looking up, focusing in on the source of the sound. Female, but not a young girl. Older, maybe an adult. Why was she crying? Because she was stuck on the roof? She should know better than that. Then again… If she honestly was stuck… Isamu couldn’t get her down but he could probably get some help for her, if it came to that.
Signing, Isamu turned into the alleyway, sniffing at the air. The freshest scent trail went up and it was definitely an adult. He climbed up nimbly, jumping and perching from every small surface he could find until finally… what looked to be a talking cat wearing clothes peered over the edge of the roof, scanning for anything amiss aside from the grown woman bawling her eyes out. He had pitch black fur from head to tail, and in the dim morning light his normally golden eyes still had a bit of a bright green tint. “Miss? Are you stuck or something? Do you need help getting down?”

If she hadn’t grown up in a world where mutant and transformation type quirks were a thing, she might have freaked out upon having what appeared to be a cat speaking to her. But, she did. So, all Isamu speaking to her really did was lightly startle her out of her (honestly slightly tiresome) crying. She looked over, sniffling and hiccuping a bit. Realizing that he was younger than her, she became a bit embarrassed. He was a child. He shouldn’t be the one checking up on her.
So, she flashed him a shaky smile as she shook her head. “No, I’m not stuck. Sorry to worry you.” She stood up, dusting herself off. She looked around, hoping she would spot the rat with her letter. She failed to do so and sighed miserably. “I actually came up here because a rat ran off with something of mine… But, I suppose if it’s that important, I could… I could...”
Get another? Why would she? She worried that whatever other heroes had sent the letter would become offended at her lack of prompt response, thinking she considered herself too good for them and was waiting on a ‘more impressive’ hero agency to try to scoop her up. Or, worse yet, what if this made others thing she considered herself fully independent, not requiring back-up or aid?! She didn’t even know who’d sent the letter! A business address had been on the outside, sure, but she hadn’t thought enough of it until she looked inside to think twice about memorizing!
And, just like that, her attempt at soothing herself fell apart and her bottom lip quivered. “Aaaaaah, why’d it take my letteeeeeer!” She furiously wiped her eyes, not trying to worry this stranger all the same. “It’s f-fine, don’t worry, I just… I gotta cry about it, and then I’ll be okay!” she swore. “It’s really early…! Sorry if I woke you with all this. J-Just go back home.”

Isamu wouldn’t have necessarily called himself worried per se. Maybe concerned, or ‘wondering why the heck a grown woman was bawling her eyes out on a roof at 6:15 AM in the morning.’ “You came up here… because of a rat?” More rats. If there was one thing he definitely realized the smell of at this point, it was a rat, and it already wasn’t the best smell in the world to begin with. Though… how’d the rat get on the roof to begin with? He should probably let the owner of the building know he had a rat problem, potentially. In fact, if it was not visible on the roof anymore it had probably burrowed its way back into the building somewhere. In that case… this would be difficult.
While the pro supposedly hero contemplated her future of loneliness and rejection from the other hero agencies, Isamu was already finishing the climb onto the roof with just a short hop, dropping to all fours and starting to sniff around. Tears, crying woman, bird feathers, dirt, and… rat. Fresh. Barely degraded. He started to follow it, sniffing about on the roof to find the trail.
“I’ve been up since four, and I don’t live around here. Just… let me try and help you find your letter, or whatever it is, before you wake up the rest of the neighborhood.” A little harsh, but she had apologized for waking him first, so… Besides, this was almost literally what his quirk was designed for, so may as well put his skills to use while he could.

He had been up since four?! She had never been one to hide her concern for others, and she wasn’t going to start now. “Wh-What?! Why?!” She seemed to at least be focusing on him now, rather than fretting over that lost letter. “You should be at home, resting…! Growing children need plenty of sleep!”
Even as she said that, she wanted the help. Just not from a child. She felt increasingly guilty about the whole situation. All the same, she wondered if his parents knew he was out and about? As a hero, she should be the one helping him, not vice versa! She felt it was all wrong.
As much as it pained her, she crossed her arms, trying to take an authoritative stance. “Really, it’s fine. You should go home and get some rest. As a pro hero, I can’t possibly let you be up here wasting precious time helping me out. I just needed to cry to get over it, but I’m fine now!”
While Chihiro was busy trying to act like a real adult, behind her, the rat would try to creep by the side of the building. Part of her letter still hung out of its mouth, though not totally intact anymore. The creature seemed to regard Isamu much more than the pink haired woman, likely mistaking the boy for a real cat what with his size and appearance.

Isamu kept up on the trail, slowly meandering his way around the roof. He just about had it when—the crying woman decided to try and be responsible or parental towards him. “I’m not a child, I’m fifteen!” Okay, so still not an adult, but not a child either. The eternal annoyance of having reached your peak growth before ten years of age. Everyone always assumed you looked younger than you actually were. Hence why he tended to be so serious most of the time, to try and appear older. “It’s fine, I went to bed at 10 last night. More than enough sleep.” Especially with the naps he usually sneaks in throughout the day.
And now she was trying to play the pro hero card. Fantastic. The woman crying on the roof because she lost a letter was trying to lecture him on responsibility. Technically he was supposed to defer to heroes, but that was for criminal or disaster situations. Neither of which applied here. Unless the rat was an evil letter-stealing shapeshifter, he supposed.
“Look, it’s fine, my body wants to keep a noctournal schedule, and besides, I’m a student at—” The rat scurrying along caught his attention and he paused mid-step, earns turning to focus on the sound followed by his head. He’d go for his school ID but that might startle the rat into moving before he could make a plan.
“Don’t move,” he hissed under his breath, trying to keep eye contact on the rat. “What’s your quirk?” With any luck it would be something useful like ‘telekinesis’ or ‘manifesting energy ratcatching nets’ or even ‘the ability to melodically control members of the family rodentia.’ Then again, if it was that last one she wouldn’t be in this mess to begin with.

“Fifteen’s still a child,” she mumbled under her breath. For better or for worse, Isamu’s more forceful personality successfully got Chihiro to back down about trying to encourage him to go home. It probably helped that he was a boy and Chihiro was, due to her… traditional home life, sort of deferential to them. She didn’t question her father, she didn’t question her brother, and she wasn’t going to massively question this kid.
It was more work reflex than obedience that led her to be still. She relied on others to provide both sword and shield in the field, so she was never, ever going to be the person who went “Why should I?!” when told to be still. Her eyes trailed after where he was looking, spotting the rat. Her letter!!
She bit her lip. He wasn’t going to like her answer, she was sure. “I heal,” she finally said. If Isamu looked towards her, she’d give an apologetic smile and a shrug of her shoulders. Even if he didn’t, she’d still tack on a quick “Sorry,” as if it fixed this mess of a situation.
The rat, meanwhile, was making a quick scurry for the way it’d gone up the building: the fire escape.

Isamu was, unfortunately for Chihiro, very used to being forceful about his own rights and his own ability to do things in the face of everything people could and had supposed about his age and ability from his appearance.
He had told the hero not to move so as to avoid unnecessarily startling the rat while they tried to coordinate an offensive, but if her quirk was only healing then… Well, hopefully it wouldn’t be needed, but it wasn’t exactly an offensive ability either. Really it would just be easier if he took care of things before the rat got on the fire escape or, heaven forbid, dropped the damn letter. “I got this!” he hissed, before exploding into a flurry of motion.
The motions all felt smooth and familiar. In fact, he almost made the whole affair look effortless. He took off at a dead run, followed by an astounding leap that cleared half of the remaining distance, paws outstretched and claws unsheathed. Down came the paws on the squirming, squeaking mass, pinning the poor creature in place before those needle sharp teeth followed, one swift bite puncturing the rat’s spine and rendering it an ex-rat.
Isamu spit to the side as he raised his head, before gently working the rat’s jaws apart and freeing the torn and slightly soggy letter. “Well, here’s… part of it,” he said, gingerly offering it to the pro hero. “Give me a moment, and I’ll see if I can find the rest…” He started with the rat’s last known position and started to track it backwards hoping to find the other piece of the letter along the way. “As I was saying, I’m a student at U.A. Suzuki Isamu.” If she was familiar with the Osaka hero scene at all, she might recognize the family name as belonging to a husband and wife hero duo, the Lion-quirked Beast King and the Tiger-quirked Tiger Lily. If she was very familiar with the Osaka heroes, she might also recognize Beastmaster, the eldest son of the two pro heroes, and a rookie.

She had, for just a few years shy of a decade, exposed to all matter of injuries and illness out on the field. Heroes and civilians with bodies broken, villains whose quirks could force others to grow violently sick, freak accidents, etc. To bring this all to its point, she accepted Isamu’s quick hunting of the rat and his delivery of the torn letter with a grace that betrayed her overly emotional nature.
A sincere, gentle smile was offered to him. “Thank you. You have no idea what this letter could mean for me...” She waited to read the letter until he finished speaking, feeling that she owed him that much respect. And, it was good for her that she had. Her mouth hung open in a wide grin as he explained who he was. Despite being the one who was the professional hero, she felt as if she were the one starstruck now. “Oh, man, no way! You aren’t Tiger Lily and Beast King’s kid, are you?! Um, not Beastmaster, but they had a few other kids, if I recall…!” She deeply bowed towards him, letter still in hand. “I’m Takenaka Chihiro! I actually grew up in Osaka! I actually moved here recently from it, ahaha!”
She stood up, then, nodding her head as if sure of something. “It makes sense that you’d go to U.A.! Look at you – you’ve already got a heroic streak on you! … I guess it’s a little silly now to tell you that I’m Heartstrings, huh?” She sighed and shook her head. “Not the best impression to make… But, wowie! A student at one of Japan’s best hero schools and the son of two great heroes!” Was she fangirling over his parents a little bit? Yes. And, even though she’d attended Seiai, she didn’t bear the longstanding grudge against U.A. that most of the rival hero school students (and, sometimes, graduates) did.
She’d definitely participated in some grudge matches against the school back in the day, sure, but she didn’t resent them or anything.
Regardless, she finally realized it was time to look at what she had of the letter. She held her breath… Only to immediately deflate, shoulders sagging. It was just a letter asking her if she wanted to show up to an event with a few other heroines. That was nice and she was always happy to meet a fan, but it wasn’t what she wanted at all. “Ah...” Still, it’d be a waste to act upset about it when Isamu had just helped her so much. The contact information would likely be what he found, but she’d just contact the company who sent the letter the difficult way if he couldn’t find it. “Thank you, again, Suzuki. I owe you.”

Isamu tilted his head sideways towards Chihiro in a sort of nod as she thanked him for retrieving the letter. “You’re welcome. I hope that letter does… whatever you need it to do for you.” And that it was worth all of this.
He paused mid-stride as Chihiro correctly identified not just his parents but his older brother too. That brought up… a lot of very, very complicated feelings for him. He loved his parents, of course, but it was still hard for him to resist comparing himself as a future hero to them and feeling like he’d come up short. “Eh heh… Well, you know. I just call them Mom and Dad.” An old ‘joke’ of sorts meant to deflect some of his mixed feelings away whenever his parents were brought up. Sometimes it even worked. “And that’s my older brother. I keep telling him he needs a better name but he never listens to me.”
He hastily stood up to return the bow to the elder hero, adopting as formal a posture as he could given his casual attire at the moment. “It’s a pleasure to meet you, Takenaka-san.” His ears twitched just a little before he forced them still as the hero complimented him on his ‘heroic streak’, whatever that meant. “You’re too kind, really.” He didn’t really blush, but a cat’s body language could be very visible if he didn’t consciously clamp down on it. “Heartstrings, Heartstrings… Oh, I think I remember you now. I’m sorry, but I didn’t recognize you out of your costume.”
When the hero went to read her letter Isamu dropped back to all fours and continued tracking the rat’s scent, finding most of the rest of the letter caught on a roof vent. He carefully reached over and extracted it, bringing it back to Chihiro and presenting it to her. He looked at how the heronine’s posture had changed, figuring it was bad news. Or at least unwanted news. Still, it was none of his business unless she wanted to share, so he let the matter go unremarked. “You’re welcome, Takenaka-san. Think nothing of it. I’m just glad I was able to help.” Having a pro hero owe you a favor could be pretty useful, though… “If you ever need to find a lost or missing item, let me know.”
And tracking that scent backwards had been an interesting challenge. His natural instinct had been to go for the fresher scent, of course, but presumably finding where a trail started could also yield helpful information, depending on the circumstances. He'd have to add that to his training list.

She laughed and it sounded clear like glass; not particularly pretty, but certainly very sincere and well meaning. She wasn’t laughing at him at all. “Oh, man, who could blame you!” she chuckled, shaking her head. This was nicer to dwell on than the disappointment of the letter. “My hair color changes, like, monthly, so good luck tryna recognize me out of costume if you’ve never seen it before!” She didn’t mind at all. There were perks to being a less popular hero; she never got mugged by the press and her constantly changing looks helped.
Her mood kept high as he offered help once more. She dared to gush, a hand on her cheek and the other hurriedly folding the letter to stash in a pocket before waving him off. “Oh, my, you’ve really got the makings of a hero! So eager to help! I hope they appreciate that good heart of yours at U.A.!” She sighed, looking off towards the sunrise. “Hopefully, nothing else of mine gets snagged… But, it was very kind of you to offer.”
She had a shift to patrol later today, intentionally scheduled when another hero with a powerful offensive quirk would be out and about. She didn’t want to miss the opportunity to get buddy buddy, so she headed over to the roof’s edge. She had a little time before she got ready, but there was no need to dwell on the roof if everything was done. She looked back at Isamu as the pink-orange light of dawn gleamed over them both. “I’ve kept you long enough. Are you going to be able to make it back fine on your own? I’d hate to ask a chi--… I’d hate to ask a young man to do that, but you seem quite capable, Suzuki.”
If he said or otherwise implied that he’d get back to whatever he was supposed to be fine on his own, she’d give him a fond wave before dropping down each level of the fire escape to reach the ground before walking back home herself. But, she really did feel as if she were in his debt and if he mentioned needing anything from her, she’d stay to listen.

“Admittedly I’ve also been… somewhat out of the loop with the goings on at home.” Being arrested could really do that to a person. Of course, the safe assumption is just that he’s been busy with life in Musutafu and thus out of touch with things going on in Osaka. Him on the other hand, would be lucky to go unrecognized. Unless he died his fur, but that sounded both torturous and not likely to work.
“Hopefully not,” he said in response to Chihiro’s comment about her stuff getting snagged. “But I’m aiming to be a specialist, and two of my focuses are going to be search and rescue as well as investigation, so I’ll be hoping to put my nose to plenty of use.” Of course, he was still a student, so probably shouldn’t be involved in ‘real’ hero work yet, but it couldn’t hurt to start networking. Who knows what kind of contacts he could make that could be useful for the future.
He allowed himself to show just a little bit of a small smile as Chihiro corrected her usage of ‘child’ so quickly. “I’ll be fine. I was already heading back to U.A. when I stopped to help you, in fact. I’m pretty good at getting by unnoticed. Have a good morning, Takenaka-san.”
With the pro heroine safely on her way Isamu picked up the rat by the tail and made his way back to ground level with a few strategic jumps, leaving the rat in a dumpster. No need to leave it laying out and attracting flies or other filth, after all. And with that last bit of business settled he headed home to U.A. to catch a shower and a little bit of shut-eye before classes started.
