BLINDSIDED
| The exercise was simple. Dara would be posing as a hero, tasked with defending a briefcase that contained something valuable - intelligence, perhaps, or maybe some prototype support gear that would give whichever side got it a distinct advantage. Hyousuke, meanwhile, was to pose as a villain. His task was to get into the building, take the briefcase, and get it to the dropoff point by any means necessary. Stealth, speed, guile, brute force - whatever it took, he was to use it, and evade capture in the process. That suited Hyousuke just fine, but what irked him was who he was going to be up against.
He had no doubt that, if they'd made it past the entrance exams, they'd be capable. At the very least, they'd be able to put up a fight, no matter what disabilities they had. Even so, he had his misgivings. It was an enclosed space that'd likely force them to get into close quarters, and fight each other at close range. That was Hyousuke's specialty - a slugfest where his opponent wouldn't be able to escape him constantly throwing hits at them, and not tiring from any of it. Even as he was allowed to step into the building and start climbing the stairs towards the briefcase, he was hesitant.
His feet pounded heavily through the emergency stairwell. He wasn't even making an attempt at stealth, having long since resolved to just rush down his opponent and beat them until he could take what he needed. It was hardly the ideal solution, true, but it was the one he thought himself best suited to. It was at times like that - where he was having to take the long way through somewhere - that he appreciated having a Quirk that kept him from getting exhausted, given how much of a pain so many stairs were otherwise. |

So, this was what it meant to train to be a hero, was it? The amount of times he had played games like this with his friends back home was almost staggering. It really did seem like he was just playing pretend to be a hero rather than learning anything important. It was one thing if they had pitted him against a teacher or an older student, but he got the feeling that this other boy knew just as little as he did. They were both in their first year, and whilst it was true that this Hyousuke had to be at least competent considering he had managed to get his way into such a premier school, it seemed like they were pitting the blind against the blind... metaphorically speaking, of course. The boy in question... well, he was the boy who sat two seats behind him in homeroom. He had sensed an almost viscous arrogance and haughtiness pouring off of him, in the way that he talked and held himself. It was strange to think of such a person as a trainee hero but he had read enough to know that universal truth - everyone felt like they were the hero of their own story. That was doubly the case for arrogant people like Hyousuke. Which was exactly what he was counting on. Sequestered on a higher floor of the building, he knew that someone that bullheaded would rush in without a plan of action, likely just trying to fight it out. That was why he had made sure to hide the briefcase before moving out to fight him personally. He would have been paranoid were the boy smarter, unwilling to part with it lest this be some sort of trick. As it was, this was more likely to result in his victory. He only had to hold out for a few minutes, "until backup arrived" as the teacher had claimed. That meant that if he could preoccupy him, keep him busy with a straight fight, then he would win. Still, just to make sure the boy didn't catch on, he had taken off his hero costume's jacket, using it to cover a convenient piece of broken debris in a similar shape to the briefcase in the corner of the room, giving the impression it was in his grasp if he could just beat its protector. Finally, as Hyousuke came further up the stairs, within his 50 meter radius, he called down to him. "Please tell me we're not going to roleplay. If you start monologuing, I'm going to scream."The words were a little stilted, stiff, even unnatural as he spoke a tongue he couldn't claim true fluency in. It was good enough to understand, however, and that was what mattered.

WORD COUNT 339
| "Aw, you're no fun!" He called back out, not entirely sure where Dara was - with his voice echoing off of the walls of the stairwell, getting even a rough idea was difficult, let alone pinpointing the direction he was supposed to be going in. "I even stayed up practising my evil laugh!" Not once did he stop, however, and he kept barrelling up towards where he thought the item would be. He didn't have much time, but hopefully, Dara hadn't pulled any tricks or set any traps. The climb was taking enough time, and he didn't have any to waste on dealing with those too.
He wasn't a strategic person, and even then, the closest thing he could muster to a plan was to just rush in and take what he needed. But still, something in his gut told him to be wary. This wasn't just some street brawl where he was slugging it out with someone until one of them fell over - there was an actual objective involved. A remarkably simple one, of course, but he had no doubt it'd make things far more complicated in ways he hadn't even thought of. A grunt of frustration escaped past Hyousuke's lips - he had to cast those thoughts out of his mind. There'd been a time and a place to worry about it, and that had long since passed. All that was left was to act.
He rounded the corner of the floor he thought would be the right one, and darted towards the source of the voice. Or, at least, where he thought it was. His eyes flitted back and forth, quickly scanning each room as he sprinted past them, looking for any sign of a trap or the briefcase. He had to come across it eventually, he thought - but he needed to hasten the process. Maybe some banter to try and get a better idea of his location again. "So did you want to listen to my evil plan?" Or should we just get right to the brawling?" |

... Huh. The boy was bantering back, that was something that he hadn't anticipated. He wasn't quite sure how to take that - was the boy taking him lightly? Or was it just that his head wasn't quite as far up his own ass as he had previously thought. In truth, judging people before really getting to know them was perhaps Dara's greatest weakness. He was so used to being pushed to the outside of groups that he had learned to form judgements of people before they had the chance to hurt him. It was possible that was now coming back to bite him in the ass. Dara had, indeed, set no traps on the way up. If he had done so even someone as bull-headed as Hyousuke would have been put in the mind of expecting tricks. No, by putting everything so straight forward on the way up Hyousuke would grow complacent, expecting it to be a straight brawl, no tricks involved. The fight was like a Matador versus a bull - he was waving the flag right now, waiting for that charge to start until he could work his magic. And so it seemed to be going well as Hyousuke made his way up through the building. Dara had moved away from the stairwell, standing in a large open room that he had to assume was designed to look like it had once been an office for holding meetings. There was a destroyed wooden table just shedding splinters of wood by one wall and a series of broken chairs around the place to act as set dressing. He, for his part, was standing on the opposite side of the room, the space between the boy's entrance and his location plain and open. The "briefcase" decoy was stowed behind him by the corner, looking as if he had tried to hide it but had done so badly. So, he waited, unable to see any timepieces and thus having nothing but his own internal clock to tell him that time was passing, that they were getting closer and closer to his victory. "Well, we'll see. With your pace, you might not even find me before the clock runs down. Or are you hiding from me? Isn't that the beleaguered hero's job? "

WORD COUNT ###
| Hyousuke barrelled forward, determined as ever to just carry out the mission and get things finished. It didn’t occur to him that the lack of traps was something to be suspicious about. He found it odd, yes, but didn’t think about it past that. He didn’t think it to be part of a larger overall strategy, that maybe he was in the wrong area and that the lack of traps was because there’d be no need for them there, or even that Dara might have not been able to set them. All he could tell was that his path had been clear, and probably would be the rest of the way.
The setting for their fight, however, was enough to give him pause. He grimaced. He’d have preferred somewhere that Dara would be trapped in, with his movement restricted – a corridor, or a smaller office. Not something like this. Still, beggars couldn’t be choosers, and the ruse with the debris was working. Hyousuke was fully convinced that he’d tucked the briefcase behind him – and that it was just a matter of forcing his way past and taking what he wanted. “Who said I’m hiding?” He growled through clenched teeth.
Fists raised and eyes focussed, he didn’t waste a further moment. He shot forwards, trying to take Dara head-on, willing to try and tank through whatever was thrown at him. A strike with the cane? Some trick with the furniture, maybe? It was hard to tell, and he couldn’t even follow Dara’s eyes to see if there was anything that should have caught his attention. He’d just have to hit first, and ask questions later.
The moment he was close enough, Hyousuke through a jab straight towards Dara’s face. A sharp, swift blow, more to test how Dara would react than anything else, or at least open him up to something bigger.

As Hyousuke growled through his clenched teeth, Dara tapped his cane on the ground in front of him, as if to silence his opponent's complaining. "Don't get cocky, brat. You're hesitating, that's almost as bad as hiding. Now, come on!" It was ironic,, the words that were coming out of his mouth sounded more fit to be coming out of a villain's mouth than out of a hero's. But in truth, the words were just yet more scene-dressing, like the room, the false briefcase and everything else that had happened so far. He wanted him to charge forwards without thought, to throw himself into danger without considering anything. A bull charging at a Mateador, to reuse his earlier comparison. Below the surface, both metaphorically and physically, he was already using his quirk. Unlike Hyousuke, his quirk was able to be used prematurely to set up a greater weapon. Adjusting the frequency of the sound-waves sent through the ground with the cane, he began to weakn the ground's foundation. He didn't get all the way through by the time that Hyousuke charged, but it was enough. The ground was weak, unprepared for the shifting weight of his target who charged so recklessly. As he moved across the ground, it caved in, threatening to drop him to the level below unless he did something. Having spread the waves out away from him, Dara stood at the edge of the crevasse he had just formed. Three feet in front of him had collapsed instead of the usual five, having had less time than usual, but he was likely still out of the boy's reach as he collapsed. The average floor of a building was 10 feet, which would only do serious damage if he landed badly. He trusted in his opponent's potential as a hero when he chose this method of attack, but getting back up here should buy him more time. Still, just in case... He reached out with his arm, forming a click and targeting it at the boy's centre of mass, aiming to blow him back from him and keeping him off form as he fell. "Olé, Pendejo.~ "

WORD COUNT 375
| The plan to charge straight at Dara and pummel him until he couldn’t stop the briefcase from being taken was a dud – somehow, Hyousuke hadn’t even managed to get close to him before the ground had started to break beneath his feet, and he had only a split second to make a decision. Could he use what remained of the ground to jump forward? The distance was great, but with the momentum he’d built up, there was a chance he could make it, even if it wasn’t a sure thing. Leaping backwards would be a safer option – but once he was on solid ground, what then?
He jumped up and to the back. He was reckless, but not so much that he was going to risk jumping that kind of distance from collapsing ground. But, even with the shorter trip to the floor behind him, Hyousuke couldn’t quite reach it. Inside, he swore – until something shot him backwards. Colliding straight into his chest, it hurt like hell and knocked the wind right out of him, but the force was just enough to send him flying backwards onto somewhere safe. Hyousuke landed on his back, groaning and sore, but not ten feet under.
Still, that left the question of where he was supposed to go after that. “Nice trick.” He grumbled, circling around to try and find a way over. Perhaps he could use some of the furniture? Stand back and get a running start? There had to be a way over there. “Don’t suppose I could get you come closer and show it off?” The taunting was less to distract Dara, and more to distract himself from what something inside him was telling him – that he didn’t have a chance. Without any kind of ranged attack, and with Dara able to guard the gap with whatever the hell that blast was, a slugging match didn’t seem to be in the cards.
Regardless of the answer he was given, Hyousuke steeled himself, and charged again. But, before he leapt, he tossed something – a lump of rubble. There wasn’t anything particularly special about it, but he hoped it’d serve as a diversion. If Dara ignored it? Well, hopefully it’d at least hit him square in the face. |

"Thank you" Dara instantly replied, ignoring the bitter, grumbling tone that the boy had taken. It was a compliment, whether a sincere one or not, and he was going to take it. It was the first actually nice thing the boy had said since they had met, and that was saying something considering the tone. Now the power differential was obvious. Dara still did not know the other's quirk, but from the way that he had charged in so aggressively he knew it had to be something strong and direct. Something that would give him the upper hand in a straight hand-to-hand fight. Arrogance, in his experience, was formed from an excess of power, although that power could come from different sources. Money, influence, strength, or something else entirely. He might not know Hyousuke, but he guessed his confidence and arrogance came from being blessed with a naturally strong quirk. By allowing him to make the choice of charging, he got a good feeling that he depended on close range. He needed to be able to strike him. It was the most recon he could do about the boy on the fly, and it had given him a few ideas on how to continue this fight. Now that the two were on different levels, they were squarely in Dara's playing field. Range was where he excelled, and it seemed to be an area that Hyou struggled with. Or, at least, he thought he did until he found himself having to react to a piece of rubble. Giving his hand away, he quickly brought up his cane and swatted it away like an errant tennis ball, leaving a small scuff on the metal of the cane as he did so. This, unfortunately, had likely revealed some of his quirk to the other boy. He had been able to see it coming despite being known as blind, and he had prioritised defending himself. That implied he lacked a great amount of speed or toughness. Simply put, if Hyousuke closed the distance, he'd likely win. In an attempt to avoid this, he clicked his tongue, aiming another sound-blast at his opponent to push back his charge. He couldn't run, not without revealing the false nature of the briefcase. So he had to stand his ground and try and delay him until the clock ran down. "Stop being stubborn! "

WORD COUNT 375
| Despite his frustration at being knocked back and having to jump away from Dara just to maintain his footing, Hyousuke didn’t miss the chunk of debris being batted aside. He was certain that Dara’s blindness would have at least made it difficult for him to act so precisely, but his classmate hadn’t even seemed to break a sweat or even twitch at moving his cane into it. Hyousuke was sure that this meant something, and that there was probably something he should’ve been wary about. But, in the heat of battle and with his mind scrambling to come up with some way toward Dara, he was too distracted to properly make use of it.
He did recognise being aimed at, however. Rather than try to dodge it – whether he could see the projectile itself or not – Hyousuke decided to instead throw up his arms to block it, and brace himself against the blast. Even with all his strength, the grip his boots had, and him being able to expect it, the shot managed to force him to stagger backwards. It was a miracle he hadn’t been blown off his feet – he could tell that his arms were going to be sore for a while after taking it head-on.
He’d have kept grinning at Dara and made some flippant remark back regardless, were it not for the fact that his opponent had dared to tell him to stop being stubborn. He stood straight, fists clenched and a frustrated, withering look being directed at Dara. “Or I could just do whatever the hell I want, and still beat you.” He said, stepping forward heavily and with purpose. “I’ll win this my way, and there’s nothing you can do to stop me!” Once more, he launched himself at Dara, trying to throw himself off that ledge and straight into his classmate. He didn’t even care about the briefcase at that point – his focus was just on taking Dara out. |

Much to Dara's chagrin, the other boy somehow managed to take the blast and still stand, pushed back rather than being truly thrown off his feet. So, this was what it meant to go up against someone worthy of being called a trainee-hero, eh? Having never been able to see a clock, he was used to not knowing how time was flying. This was, however, the first time that not knowing where things were really got to him. If he backed away here, if he tried to shift the field of their engagement, would it buy him time? And if so, would it be the time that he needed or would it just make things take longer. The boy had already charged up an entire buildings' stairway and had barely taken a breath after falling through the floor. Either his stamina was amazing or this was his quirk. If so, that was terrifying - the idea that someone could just keep coming at you endlessly without stopping. For a moment, he found himself remembering those biology textbooks he listened to as a kid, explaining about how humans evolved into pursuit predators. They weren't as strong as a bear or as fast as a cheetah, but they had become the apex because they never stopped, they could take a while but they would always find their prey again and chase it until it exhausted itself to death. Quirks were a first step in humanity's evolution, and for Hyousuke to be an evolved form of humanity's natural strength? It was kind of terrifying. Hyousuke readied himself like a cat ready to spring on a mouse, and Dara knew he had seconds to decide on a course of action. He could push him back but the constant exposure to loud sounds was beginning to disorient him. He didn't know how much longer he had in this fight and needed to conserve his strength. But he also couldn't just take it, if this boy was as strong as he seemed that would be a direct loss. So, instead, he stuck out his hand ready to click again. The moment he began to spring forwards, Dara clicked again, but instead of the soundwaves going out to contest Hyou, he instead angled it up. The waves hit the ceiling, and the roof caved in, dropping on both boys just as he threw himself backwards, leaving Hyou to dive head first under the sudden wave of debris. Even if he got out of it without a scratch, it would bury the "briefcase". Hyou could only win if he found the true briefcase, but at this point did he even care about winning or was he just acting out of frustration? Either way, Dara began to run through the shattered glass pane that lined the room, heading into one of the nearby rooms.

WORD COUNT 325
| Hyousuke wasn’t sure what was propelling him towards Dara with such fervour. Was it still his Quirk? Stubborn, unshakeable determination? Or perhaps it was some undying sense of frustration and blinding rage that forced him to keep running until he caught up with Dara, injuries be damned? Whatever the case, he all but roared as he leapt forward, not even beginning to think that Dara would have some kind of trap or plan in place to repel him yet again. In his haste to try to get his hands on his classmate, he’d forgotten what little caution he’d displayed before.
He didn’t even look up until that first chunk of the building collapsed onto him. Even then, his first instinct was to keep pushing forward. He burst forward with every ounce of his strength, eyes trained on Dara, ignoring the rapidly-caving ceiling… until it trapped his legs. Not enough of it hit him to really damage him, but it caught his shin while he was barrelling forward, and cut his jump short. What power and momentum he’d built up was cut, and with a dull thud, he found himself laying sprawled out on the floor beneath.
It hurt. Nothing was broken – as far as he could tell, anyway – but everything hurt like hell. His ribs were sore. He was sure his legs were scraped and bruised, not to mention the impact his chin had taken on the way down. Despite this, and the wind having been knocked right out of him, Hyousuke staggered clumsily to his feet, disoriented but even more determined. “Motherf-” He caught himself before he could complete that expression of frustration, and looked back up. “THIS ISN’T OVER!” He called back up, not even sure if Dara was still there or not. “I’LL CLIMB BACK UP THERE AND TEAR YOUR GOD DAMN SPINE OUT! YOU HEAR ME?!”
There was no doubt that it was blind rage carrying him forward at that point.
