By the time Hyousuke had made it down to the training area, Yuuto had already prepared for the first lesson. Leaning against the wall, the pro was wearing gym clothes, rather than his costume - despite Hyousuke having been told to wear his. Though he was curious about it, Hyousuke deigned not to think about it for the time being, assuring himself that it would make sense in time. Instead, he strode up towards Yuuto and raised his hand slightly in greeting, which was met with a nod in response.
“So,” Hyousuke asked, glancing around at the section of the room they were situated in, “What’s the plan?” The area was sparse, with nothing but the wall, the floor, and a bucket of what appeared to be golf balls at Yuuto’s feet. The pro pried himself off the wall, and held up a length of fabric, with a sensor where the buckle was supposed to be. “Catch.” He said, tossing it at Hyousuke, before grabbing a ball out of the bucket and tossing it in his hand. “Put it on. You’re going to need that for today’s training.”
Confused, but curious, Hyousuke slipped it on around his waist, and looked back up once it’d snapped onto him. “That,” Yuuto explained, “Senses when one of these hits the wearer’s body.” He held up the ball, and tossed it gently at Hyousuke to demonstrate his point. Yuuto then held up his phone, a rudimentary display on it having ticked up to one. “We’re going to be using this to train you to dodge. I find it hard to believe someone with skills like yours doesn’t know how to - those strikes I saw weren’t something an amateur’d be throwing out. No, I think you just don’t want to.”
Hyousuke opened his mouth to offer some sort of protest, but Yuuto cut him off before he could begin, his stern tone leaving no doubt that he wasn’t finished. “Listen. I don’t care what your reasons are, but unless it’s a part of your Quirk to get smacked in the face, you need to learn. If you don’t, you die. That armour might stop a bullet or two, but what about when someone pulls a bigger gun on you? Spits fire, or starts shooting lasers out of their eyes? And that’s not even mentioning people that’re just plain strong. Ceramic might be able to take impacts better than steel, but it’ll do it once. After that, you can kiss your insides goodbye.”
Hyousuke had to give it to Yuuto - the man didn’t mince words. Even so, he just nodded, gritting his teeth and listening as best he could. Old him wouldn’t have been silent - there’d have been arguments abound, trying to justify what he was doing as right. But with everything that’d occurred recently, Hyousuke at least managed to keep himself quiet, knowing that perhaps it’d be best to at least hear others out if they thought he was doing something wrong. He was shaken out of his reverie, however, when Yuuto motioned towards a spot on the wall, and started to back off.

Hyousuke didn’t need to be told twice. He stood in place, teeth grit and focussed, fists clenched as he took up his stance. Sure, it might have been easier to do it in gym clothes - though lighter than steel, the ceramic plates still had weight to them. But he wasn’t going to be fighting in gym clothes - if he couldn't dodge in his hero costume, then there wasn’t much point in training to be a hero. So he assumed, anyway. Either way, it was helping him get used to wearing the thing, and for that he was grateful at least.
“Here it comes.” Yuuto stated flatly. With that, the first ball was tossed, whistling through the air until it slammed against Hyousuke’s head. It wasn’t painful by any means - the helmet was made to take harder hits than golf balls being flung at his face, after all. But even so, the shock of it hitting him so suddenly was enough to throw him off, and he found himself being pelted with more, with Yuuto peppering him with strikes at an unprecedented pace.
Hyousuke didn’t see what number Yuuto stopped at, but nevertheless, the pro seemed disappointed by the time he’d ceased lobbing anything. “We’ve got a long way to go…” He said, shaking his head and stepping in to gather up the balls he’d chucked, while motioning for Hyousuke to do the same. The boy simply nodded in response, unsure of what else would be appropriate. Between the two of them, it didn’t take long, but it still gave a moment for him to think and reflect - and to understand that Yuuto definitely wasn’t wrong.
Had those been anything else, his life would’ve been in danger, if not taken from him outright. Hell, his solution to deal with the fire-slinging phone thief that’d assaulted Aki was to charge headfirst at him - if the distance hadn’t been so short, who knows what could’ve happened? Once again, Hyousuke was glad of the visor obscuring his face. The pensive look that had begun to cross it was unbecoming of him, and he wasn’t sure he wanted anyone else seeing that side of him.
“Come on.” Yuuto began, once more tossing a ball in his palm, his voice snapping Hyousuke back to attention. “You’re not going to get anything done just standing around there. I’m going to go slower this time - that was just me trying to get a feel for how long this’d take.” “R-right. Sure.” It was an uncharacteristically meek response, but it was about all that Hyousuke could give. Everything was just coming as a shock to him - his entire style of fighting was being torn down and built back up again, with Yuuto being the architect. It was tough for him to learn that he’d been doing it wrong for so long - and yet, Yuuto’s stern attitude was somehow comforting.
That no-nonsense, no frills approach to training. The insistence that Hyousuke could do better, but he’d need to work for it. Someone reaching out to him, offering a helping hand when all seemed lost… For a moment, he saw his old teacher in Yuuto. That thought was enough to give him pause, but was also unfortunately enough to let a ball slam straight into his visor, shocking him into flinching backwards. “Again!” Yuuto called out - and once more, they rounded up the ammo, and once Hyousuke was prepared, the two of them began to square off once more.

Once again, Hyousuke was pelted by orbs, the dull thud of them connecting with his body ringing out into the training area, followed quickly by them clattering onto the wooden flooring. Their expressions didn’t change throughout it all - Yuuto’s remained stern and focussed, while Hyousuke’s was one of grim determination. Both could tell that training wouldn’t be easy. Hyousuke was having to tune his reflexes to something he’d trained himself out of, and Yuuto had to find a way to make significant progress in the span of Hyousuke’s internship. A challenge they were both willing to undertake - but whether they were enough for it was another matter entirely.
It wasn’t until Yuuto held up his hand and called for a break that Hyousuke even realised how long they’d been going for. They’d been at it for the better part of two hours, and even Yuuto had to confess that his arm needed a break. Hyousuke, though not tired in the slightest, agreed that it was probably for the best. Especially when the pain started to set in. The balls couldn’t cause any significant kind of injury past the armour, that much was true, but that didn’t stop him aching like hell. Maybe a couple of bruises were forming too, though only time would tell for that one.
The pair took seats next to each other on a bench. Silently sipping water, the two of them didn’t even spare so much as a glance at each other until Hyousuke - with an unusually tentative tone - asked “How am I doing?” Yuuto’s expression twitched slightly, and he looked down at his phone, before scrolling through it. “Not well. Even for a first-year whose style revolves around brawling, your dodge rate’s terrible.” “I-” Hyousuke could barely get even that out. He’d known that Yuuto wouldn’t go easy on him when it came to criticism, but to be so blunt about it… It shook even him.
“What?” Yuuto said, looking at Hyousuke with unflinching, steely eyes. “Am I wrong?” “N-no- I mean you are! I can- I just…” Hyousuke searched for something to say. He always had something to say, after all. Some pithy remark or statement indicating his defiance. But there, with someone that seemed intent on dismantling him? It was like wandering through fog. He was stumbling around, unsure of what he was even supposed to do there. The words just wouldn’t come. Eventually, after stuttering and stammering, he managed to force something out - the first thing that came to mind. “I’m trying god damn it!”
The outburst was born of anger. Indignation, so strong it almost brought him to tears, had him clenching his fists as he glared back at Yuuto, as if to try and pierce past that stony gaze. The tension that hung in the air after that could be cut with a knife, but instead, Yuuto simply replied with a flat “I know.”

Hyousuke couldn’t bring himself to respond. He didn’t know how. Such a short, curt response… How was he supposed to give any meaningful reply to that? Fortunately for him, he didn’t have to think of one. “And that’s why I’m not going easy on you, and it’s why I’m not going to sugarcoat anything when I’m training you. Nobody - not a single Bloodhound - got here without having earned their place. You recruits aren’t any different. We only invite people we think have the potential to excel. We’re tough on recruits because we think they’ve got what it takes to endure it. Because we think they’ve got a future, whether it’s with us or not. You’re not any different.”
Hyousuke was still unsure of how to respond, but that time, for entirely different reasons. Someone actually believed in him. They truly, honestly, thought that he could make something of himself. Everyone else, he’d dismissed as just being too kind to tell him he couldn’t be a hero, or just not doing it because it was against their job - teachers couldn’t very well tell him that he couldn’t be a hero if he was still passing, tenuous though his grasp of the subject was. But there was someone with nothing to gain from recruiting someone incompetent, telling him that he could be… well, more than he was. He wasn’t entirely certain hw he felt about it - or if the maelstrom of emotions welling up inside him could even be given a name.
He didn’t need to give a response, though. Yuuto stood up, and moved towards the fountain, back turned to his pupil. “But it’s up to you to do the rest. I can teach you, and I can train you, but you’re the only one that gets to decide whether you get to go further or not. You’ve got a chance, kid - don’t waste it.” With that, Yuuto left for the fountain, stepping off towards it without even looking back.
All that Hyousuke could do in return was stare, before looking back down at his own bottle, though his gaze was far from focussed.
