Sigga’s follow-up had ended as quickly as her previous assault. The problem with her improvised tactics was that, despite their knack for catching an opponent off-guard, the fish’s experience with each possible impromptu and spontaneous act was a new experience for her. It was one thing to come up with a clever idea and an altogether different matter of following through with some degree of expertise.
In short order her legs had been swept out from beneath her and in another instant she was pinned. There was no energy left to try to get out of it; no adrenaline left for shrimping. You could see the tension in her muscles fade as her body and mind forfeit in unison.
The one oversized hand still free from the pin managed to tap the man restraining her until he let go. She didn’t get up though, choosing instead to lay there while Firebrand told them what was in store for tomorrow.
Sigga would have groaned if there was any energy left with which to do so. Why did she have to train with Jun? The little turd may have won the Sports Festival, but he was still just a student like herself. Ugh. She’d rather be put through the wringer against Firebrand again without any additional training. While blindfolded even.
Still sprawled across the floor, her gaze followed the Pro Hero. Her mouth was ajar as if to speak, but nothing came out. She didn’t even have the will to voice her objection in words or through some extempore growl. And so her fate was sealed.
The following day Sigga showed up a little earlier than scheduled. She had hoped to get to the agency before the blond. Clearly arriving only a few minutes ahead of the appointed time had not been enough. Jun was already there, ready to begin training.
Despite the thrashing she had received the other day, a night’s rest and plenty of food had done wonders in rejuvenating the fish. She pushed through the front doors and strode briskly to the training room.
“Where’s Firebrand?” Her head spun, searching for the man, but there was no sign of him. Maybe he’s just running a little late, she assured herself. She really hoped he wasn’t going to leave the two student’s to their own devices. That certainly wouldn’t be very responsible. They could just end up goofing off or something without proper supervision!
Of course that wasn’t what concerned the girl. If Jun had been fine with electrocuting her in front of the Pro Hero the other day, she dared not imagine what forms of motivation the youth might come up with if there were no other witnesses.
Sigga walked over to one of the walls, ignoring Jun’s opening query. She had no intent on getting on the first-year’s bad side, there just wasn’t a concrete answer for her to give him. What fighting style did she want? Who knew? If she could, she’d have answered with Underwater Combat, but that remark might have been taken for sarcasm. It would be soooo much easier to take on Firebrand if they were fighting in a swimming pool. The water would extinguish his Quirk and the added weights he’d be wearing will likely have him sink to the bottom without her even having to intervene.
Her lips curved into a slight smile. Getting a win over Firebrand was a nice thought, even if it was just a fantasy.
She dropped her pink water bottle on the ground near the wall, quickly replacing her grin with a more neutral expression. “Uh, yeah,” she said to Jun’s last question, trying not to sound too cold. Sigga immediately went into some leg stretches. The silence that followed suggested she was leaving that talk part up to the blond.

Jun heard the question, but ignored it. He knew one of his sidekicks was watching in the observation deck. Sigrid really didn't like him, did she? As she placed her pink water bottle on the ground, she just stated yes to answer his question, sounding awfully cold. Sighing loudly, he spoke to the fish girl. "Look, you don't like me, I get it. You don't have to. But I am to try to get you better at doing something that all heroes do. Fighting. Even rescue and support heroes have to fight...they have to be able to hold their own. If you don't want to be a hero, then there's the door. I'm not going to waste my time on someone that barely shows any conviction at all, and only does so just to prove that they're right or just to show someone off or for a little bit of vengeance even. If you don't really want to be a hero...then why are you even here?" Jun was already letting some of his frustration show in his voice.
"I don't know your background or anything about you, but UA saw potential in you, and you applied for the school. So there has to be something there, right? You really need to decide on that. Until you do, I'm just going to wait over there. So do some soul searching and come back with an answer. And maybe some solid reasoning or semi-inspirational speech, I don't care. But convince me to help you improve beyond because Firebrand says so." With that, he walked off to a corner and sit and wait. He's had it with her and her half-assed attempts.

Stretching had always been the best part of any sort of workout or training for her. It was kind of like a self-massage. There was never any concern of getting exhausted either. The only issue was the promise of more laborious tasks lying in wait right after.
Given the opportunity it was an easy decision to make, extending the duration of any pre-workout stretch. This time, however, it didn’t look like Sigga would need to put in any effort in procrastinating the actual start of training.
She didn’t notice the sigh of exasperation coming from her peer until he began to speak. At first there wasn’t much for her to think about, but as the monologue went on and on, Sigga found herself staring at Jun with marked perplexion.
Her mouth hung ajar as she froze in the midst of a supraspinatus stretch. She had expected to receive some suggestions or recommendations as to what kind of fighting style she should pursue, followed possibly by some coaching intermingled with physical torture. Like last time. Instead she was faced with a tirade that seemed to criticize her on a more personal level.
Still stunned, Sigga’s gaze followed the Sport Festival’s champion as he marched off. As he reached the corner of the room, the girl began looking frantically around. She half expected some sort of metaphysical explanation to present itself, clarifying the situation to her. When none did, her mind began sifting through what had just occurred.
Though her mouth still gaped the rest of her expression replaced some of the puzzlement with a hefty dose of indignation. Barely shows any conviction???! The words echoed loudly within her own skull. She didn’t voice them aloud. To yell across the room as her rage began to bubble to the surface would be far too demeaning of her. It also would be a colossal understatement to say she took exception to Tomoshibi’s review of her.
In the last few days Sigga had eavesdropped on the mind of a trauma victim, been attacked and nearly killed by a Villain, ran ragged while her peer took satisfaction in motivating her by way of electrocution, and, to top it off, continued training right afterwards until she literally. Could. Not. MOVE. All of this had been during her internship. And she had come back today to continue the madness. Willingly. Yet this little guttersnipe had the gall to question her conviction?!
Sigga’s face contorted into a sneer. She had tried remaining amicable despite the circumstances, but even this fish wasn’t about to let someone her age... coerce her into whatever his idea of her compliance might be. He didn’t want to help? Fine with her.
The girl turned away from her new detractor and returned to stretching.
She was under no illusion that she could really use some help in training, but defeating Firebrand tomorrow was hardly a make-or-break type situation. Her chances of success were abominably slim. But she’d lose as many times as was necessary to come out on top. Even if she was annoyed with the whole process of the thing.
Her stretching routine shifted to her legs where she continued the rather lengthy and admittedly complex number of stretching exercises the first-year UA Physical Education instructor had taught the class. She had always thought the number of different stretches they were supposed to do before training to be rather ludicrous, but the anger that burned inside her now provided ample fuel for the wayward teen.
The pre-workout was used as much to warm up her muscles as to cool down her mind. With the exercise coming to a close Sigga realized that she’d have to come up with a training regime all on her own. This… was actually not a problem. Well, it was, but not in the sense some might find it.
Much of her life came with little guidance, forcing the orphan to lean into developing her… heuristics. It wasn’t so much about making the perfect improvised decisions so much as making them quickly and learning from the experience. And so, without so much as a pause after finishing her stretches, Sigga transitioned straight into her next warm up. Running laps around the room.
Her opinion of running hadn’t changed from the previous day. She hated it. But it also was what the Pro Hero leading the Flame On agency had subscribed her to the other day. Sigga took that information and… ran with it. It provided the additional benefit of giving her a bit of time to brainstorm what her follow-up would be. That was the real pickle.

After about an hour, one of Firebrand's sidekicks rang a line to him, and showed him what was said and everything. Bureizu sighed heavily. The boy wasn't completely wrong. It did seem like she was just going through the motions and doing what was asked of her. Granted, she was doing her best at least, but overall didn't seem to comprehend what Jun was really getting at. If anything, it seemed like she was proving him right. She looked like she wanted to say something, scream at him, something. Getting up, he went on down, where Sigrid was doing something else as Jun was idly watching and reading something on his phone. "Sigrid, you look like you could use a break. Let's take a walk." The pink haired man would hopefully leave with her in tow. He had ordered one of his sidekicks to take Jun out on patrol and do some minor investigative work.
After some time walking, Bureizu spoke up. "You do realize you're only proving his point, right? It makes we wonder...why are you really doing this? Internships are semi-required anyways, and always have some on schedule for everyone. Granted, not every internship do you actually learn anything...but looking into you some more I think I have an idea. Do you want to share?" He honestly doubted she would. After some silence or a hard no, he decided to speak up himself.
"My own story is well documented. I was no traditional hero. Sure, I am an alumni from UA, but my beginnings was not the traditional, loving family. I was abandoned, unwanted, and put into foster care, same as you. I even joined a gang, got into a lot of fights, all of that. Only thing I did that was remotely respectable was traditional archery. And my meddling into things I shouldn't have. Even got arrested for saving a couple people from some punks...charged with vigilantism. A hero stood up for me though. We came to an agreement. He would prepare me for UA, and I would apply. That hero stuck his neck out for me, a delinquent who happened to be in the wrong place at the right time. At the risk of his own standing. You're here because of your probation officer. For a mistake. You talk a big game, but that's all it is. A bluff and one big lie. You're not sold at this hero crap. So, I have a different question. Why not?"

Like last time the run started out quite slow. Maybe even slower than before. Without any punishment-like-incentive, Sigga was able to set her own pace. It was one thing to run ragged and an altogether different matter to give the body time to recover in between exertions. For as long as she was left to her own devices she’d be sure not to burn herself out like yesterday.
As the novice made her way around the room, she took stock of her own breathing. The almost leisurely pace made it easier for her to tune into her own body and her mind was allowed to note the changes she was going through quite easily. This… was a strange experience. Sigga seldom got the opportunity to run in a peaceful environment, in or outside the UA.
Her breathing was barely faster than when at rest. She glanced to the side of the room, eyes drifting up to the large wall clock mounted just below the ceiling. Two boney fingers pressed against her wrist as she processed the simple math and figured out her heart’s BPM.
After several minutes of allowing her body to warm up, Sigga increased her pace to that of a jog. Again she took note of how hard she was breathing and calculated her heart’s BPM. Then her speed slowed so her body could recover.
There was something beguiling about paying attention to numbers and how her body felt as well as the arbitrary method in which Sigga noted how hard she was breathing. She continued increasing and decreasing her speed in an almost perpetual loop, each acceleration greater than the last.
Finally, when she felt going on longer might risk the same outcome as yesterday’s run, she quit.
Sigga stumbled her way over to her water bottle. The pink, synthetic cylinder stood where she had left it. Drops of condensation had since formed, wetting the girl’s hand as her oversized digits closed their grip around the container.
She popped its top and took a swig, dropping herself to the floor as she did so. Her heavy breathing paused so her mouth could expeditiously drain every drop of dihydrogen monoxide that was available. It wasn’t enough.
Sigga shook the bottle which gave off a strange rattling sound. Perhaps leaving it overnight in the freezer hadn’t been such a good idea after all. There was still a large chunk of ice inside that had yet to thaw out.
A hissing sigh escaped her lips as she spun in her seated position before pushing off the wall with both feet. Her rump slid backwards and she lowered her bald head to the floor with a thud. Her heavy breathing from the lengthy run was now allowed to resume.
There was a slight twitch to her lips that hadn’t been there before. She wasn’t sure why it was there. Sigga still didn’t like running. Running sucked. And yet… Weird, her mind concluded. She was tired, but it was like a good tired, whatever that meant.
Her fingers drummed listlessly over her abs. Then a thought occurred.
Sigga sat up suddenly, staring down at herself. Then her head began to swivel to see if anyone was looking in her direction. It was just Jun and her, and he seemed to be glued to his phone. Good.
It was… a bit of a struggle. After several moments of rustling about, the fish managed to somehow withdraw one arm into her hero suit which, in turn, assisted in widening the collar enough so she could… well, so she could peek down at herself.
The collar snapped around her noggin as her hand withdrew its assistance, leaving only her head fins and back of head sticking out. She couldn’t see anymore, which was a bit of a problem. So she simply wiggled her one arm inside the suit until her fingers finally found her gills.
That had been the goal of this strange pursuit; to see what her gills had been up to. After she had gone home yesterday she had discovered the fleshy lining had swollen a bit. Not a lot. Nothing to be alarmed over. And after a cold shower and some overnight rest they had recovered and returned to normal, but she simply had to check to see if her second day of running hadn’t mimicked the previous day’s results.
Much to her relief, it hadn’t. At least so far as she could tell from the feel of things. Before she could further study herself, Sigga’s investigation was cut short. The back of her dome picked up the sound of her name being uttered by a familiar voice.
The black neoprene made a suctioning sound as a slightly-embarrassed Sigga popped back out from inside her hero suit. Apparently Firebrand had arrived at the precise moment to witness her goofing off. Not that she was goofing off or anything, despite what it looked like. His timing was impeccable though.
She dismissed the feeling of nervousness and got to her feet, embarrassment quickly replaced with relief now that someone more disciplined was present to give her some direction. The fish followed him out the room.
Her heart rate had returned to normal by this point. Sigga hadn’t come up with a follow-up to her warmup but it looked like that burden wouldn’t be for her to solve. She quickened her steps to match the pink haired man’s stride, curious as to where he was taking her.
After a few moments of quiet the fifteen-year-old found her gaze and thoughts drifting towards some nearby agency members. She was brought back to rapt attention at Firebrand’s sudden breaking of the silence. The subject of conversation, however, wasn’t what she had expected.
At first the bald girl didn’t realize who he was talking about. When she finally clued in, her brows furrowed. Sigga wasn’t sure what point of Jun’s she was thought to be proving, but it was stranger still for the Pro-Hero to be under the impression that she was somehow expected to care what the blond thought. He clearly must have missed her interaction with the male student yesterday, and he certainly wasn’t present during today’s. That was something she might have to clear up at some point.
The question that followed the Pro Hero’s initial query didn’t help clarify things for her either. Though it didn’t sound like he was expecting an actual answer, the man having replied to his own rhetorical question as soon as he asked it. When he concluded by asking a third, inquiring if she had something to share, it finally seemed like she was expected to say something.
“Uh...” It was the infamous filler sound a teen was oft heard uttering as their thoughts carefully arranged the words that were to be spoken. She took his interest as being an offer for her to speak whatever was on her mind rather than have the girl comment on something specific. So she did.
“Jun’s kind of a…” Sigga paused, leaving the sentence unfinished. She had been about to say bully, which would have been an accurate assessment of her interactions with the blond, but the wayward fish’s survival instincts kicked in, cutting the line short. She didn’t know if she could trust the man next to her with this revelation.
Firebrand definitely fit the role of an authority figure. He was a Pro-Hero, ran his own agency, and was an instructor at UA. Those weren’t strikes against his character, but Sigga had encountered precisely zero authority figures that left her with a positive impression. She suspected it might have something to do with the old adage regarding power and corruption. Jun had exhibited those characteristics she was wary of in adults when he chose to electrocute her and coerce her into some form of compliance with that odd philosophical rant of his.
Instead she circled back to Firebrand’s first question about Jun. “I don’t care what he thinks.” Her tone was casual and matter-of-fact. If he held the blond on some sort of pedestal she’d learn soon enough. Hopefully the pink haired man and his other pupil weren’t, like, related or something.
After some silence, the man spoke up again. Siggs’s waterbottle dangled from a pink strap around her wrist as she listened with curiosity. She almost interjected at the comparison he made between the two of them about being unwanted, but the story started to get interesting at that point so she let the comment slide.
“You got arrested?!” The fish snapped her mouth shut.
She listened to the rest of the tale in silence without interrupting again. There hadn’t been much left for the man to say and his story quickly switched over from something that interested the fish and gained some commiseration, back to an accusatory account of her ethos. She didn’t like the tone or the presumptions that came with it.
Once again she let the remark slide, choosing to focus on the question instead.
Sigga started with a half-hearted shrug, “I donno. Cause heroes are dumb? Uh… no offense. Idontmeanyou.” She quickly backpeddaled the comment, then decided to stop walking on eggshells. He clearly wasn’t being as selective with his words. Sigga paused her walk for a moment, then started back up again.
“I’ve…” Another pause. “Nearly every encounter I’ve had and story I’ve heard on Pro Heros hasn’t painted them in a positive light,” said the disillusioned teen. “I’m not a kid anymore. I can see the world for what it is. And it’s ugly.” Sigga crossed her arms. “Maybe that’s just how it is back in America. But I’ve met the UA principal. I’ve spoken to my… handler...” She didn’t know if parole officer or handler sounded worse, “And I’ve...” her eyes narrowed as she gave the agency leader a knowing glance, “-met the students; the future’s Pro Heros. Are you impressed by them?”
Arms still crossed, the impressionable first-year UA student looked up at the man. Her question had been very open ended, giving the archer the opportunity to criticise those enrolled at UA as he saw fit. Including the intern he was speaking with.

Bureizu chuckled at the outburst, and rose an arm, showing two fingers, signifying that he had been arrested twice. Though the first was significantly more minor. The hero watched his student's reactions carefully. She was more interested in him than the real topic...her. Sigrid started with a half hearted shrug, and her response actually got him laughing pretty hard, but soon contained himself, barely, and motioned for her to go on if she had anything else. She didn't hold back. She'd heard bad things about pro heroes, she'd seen it with her own eyes. She was from America too. Which was different than Japan. She'd met the principal, spoken with her parole officer, and met some of the students. It was clear she wasn't impressed. But she asked about his thoughts. "What I'm about to say is going to be long winded. It might even sound like a lecture, so I do hope I don't bore you with my thoughts. I do have some little comments before I answer your question.
The world has always been ugly. How visible it is has varied throughout history, but I argue that it always had been there. And it never gets better. I do think it never gets worse, either. A perpetual loop of how visible that ugliness is.
Japan and America are very different. America has problems and issues that no other first world country has. I would go so far as to say that their pro heroes are not as up to shape as most places. Strong yes, and mostly stays within the law. But it sure doesn't take much digging to find something else there too. Not to say all American Pro Heroes are bad, but they do have a certain reputation. That said, the same can be said of Japan's. We're very strict about who becomes a hero and all. But that doesn't mean that there are not duds out there. One good example was when a hero collapsed a school building when fighting a villain, trapping children and staff inside. The guy tried to pin the blame on the villain, but just a quick look at their quirks tells that that just isn't true. A video popped up a few years later countering that hero. After an audit, that hero's reputation got burned. And I say good riddance to that. While some duds are damn obvious, others are not, particularly if there are some in the top one hundred. Finding evidence to the contrary is difficult at best, but oversight is overworked and understaffed, sadly. We need those people to keep ourselves in check. Parole officers...handlers...most suck in general...it's tough finding a good one...and keeping them.
Now, to answer your question, it depends a lot on the year. My third years, I am impressed by their growth, and do believe that they will become fine heroes once they graduate and become sidekicks to agencies. Growth doesn't end upon graduation...both mentally and in your powers. If you're asking about this year's first years...in general, they don't usually impress me. This year's at least have aspects of them that do impress me. For example, your classmate back there. Sports Festival champion. Strong combat abilities, great cooperation, perceptive, and a natural it would seem. That impresses me. But mentally, I would say that there is one student that has further to go than him. And a lot of that is just based on what I've seen with you two. Some digging reveals that he's usually quiet and withdrawn. Easily approachable, but generally doesn't just randomly come up to someone. I take it you two started off on the wrong foot, and it's straining things even now. He's dealing with you like he deals with bullies...by becoming a borderline bully himself. Electrocuting you to get you to increase your pace, while effective, wasn't the best way to handle it. When training someone, he goes by the book of hardknocks. A lot of how he was trained. He has a resolve to become a hero because of his past, which I am not usually at liberty to say, so this is off the record. His home was invaded by a villain, hoping to escape with hostages. He and his twin brother were home and defended themselves. Jun got a nasty scar and was paralyzed on one side for six months while his twin brother was put into a coma for three years, and while out of it, is paralyzed from the waist down.
Isamu Suzuki probably impresses me most. He's smart, has a drive to live up to his family's legacy, and defies expectations. His past reveals he's a former gang member and betrayed them when they went too far. Hyousuke Suzuki is the most stunted, I would say, mentally. That said, he made it to the tournament through sheer grit and stubbornness. But that same stubbornness is also what's holding him back from using his quirk to its fullest.
Then there's you. You have an interesting quirk, that you know how to use, but you have no drive. You got into trouble, purposely or otherwise, and is just doing things just to rub it in your handler's face...or other people that doubts you. You do as you're told to get by, but otherwise doesn't do anything really extra. You don't take that extra step. From what I can tell at least. Jun wasn't wrong. If you had a choice, you wouldn't be here...would you? Just to be clear, that's not a bad thing and I don't mean to sound accusatory.
As far as the principal goes, we disagree on things, we agree on things, it happens. I haven't seen them in their treatment of students, so I don't have an opinion on that.
You do have time to decide on if you truly want to be a hero. But time is not on your side here. In America, you'd have a little bit more time. But not here. Do you have anything else to get off your chest or any questions?"

Her pupils dilated at the two raised fingers. Twice?!?
Sigga had already been aware that plenty of Pro-Heroes back in America at one point or another may have had run-ins with the law. Heck, some even had criminal records. At least according to social media, but who knew how much truth there was to that. It had been a topic of heated political contention on the news at any rate.
The girl had always assumed Japan was far, far more strict in granting Hero licenses. Those assumptions had all been her uninformed conjecture rather than having any basis in fact.
Sigga didn’t necessarily believe getting arrested should void a person’s employment opportunities in the Pro-Hero field. There was a line there, however. A line that in her limited experience and admittedly uninformed opinion had often been crossed when it shouldn’t have. In some instances the opposite had occurred. The chance to do good by those beaten down by archaic measures in the name of “justice” had effectively cripled the arrival of any meaningful change to a broken system. Mostly, though, she noticed that many Pro-Heros had managed to avoid entanglements with the law despite having absolutely no business being Pro Heroes. Her parole officer was one such example.
The snake lady, though ruthlessly effective at her job, had time and time again crossed lines that Sigga believed should have had her sacked. Apparently having a family with bottomless pockets, hands in every media outlet, and hefty political backing resulted in the snake simply being benched for now; forced to occasionally babysit the teenage fish and others of her ilk. Life just wasn’t fair.
The trainee’s arms remained crossed. Two ribbons of fine, fleshy, purple pterygiophore narrowed along with Sigga’s eyes at the promise of the not-a-lecture-but-sounding-like-one. Her mental fort braced itself for the imminent spiel.
She listened attentively, the pink-haired man seeming to echo much of her own worldly observations rather than revealing anything new at first. The day’s shift from her personal training to a philosophical discussion was not one she had predicted. But then little of what occurred during her internship had been expected. At least she didn’t have to spend more time with Flame On’s other intern.
The story of a Japanese Pro Hero collapsing a school wasn’t one she’d heard previously. It must have happened before the fish’s recent arrival in the country, otherwise she would have remembered it for certain. Still, as far as Pro Hero incongruities were concerned, Sigga would rank property damage as relatively benign on the list. Though… maybe less so if it did go alongside trapping children and teachers in the rubble. But that was relative. And as bad as that was, the bald teen had witnessed far worse. At least back in America anyway. An unfair comparison.
Suffice to say, she and the pink-haired man were largely in agreement on that topic. But when the subject switched to his review of his students, their thoughts differed substantially.
Sigga even let out an derisive hiss under her breath, her equivalent of a snort, when Firebrand praised Jun’s cooperation. The two of them starting off on the wrong foot had little relevance to her view of the blond today. Heck, she barely remembered their first encounter besides him having made some sort of fish-flavored joke or something. But that was par for the course.
Most of the people she’d ever met had made fish jokes in front of her, each one of them clearly thinking they were the first person ever to think of whatever “clever” piscene quip they happened to say at the time. But they weren’t the first. Nor were they clever. She had heard the joke before. She’d heard all of them. A million times. It was difficult to expect anything else, though it was still plenty annoying. That was hardly the issue she had with the young man, though.
When Firebrand started making excuses for the blond, Sigga had to briefly turn her head away so he wouldn’t see her roll her eyes. So he DID see him shock me… Sigga thought to herself. And yet the man hadn’t thought to intervene. He was even defending the other student.
Whatever the Firebrand’s assessment was of his other pupil, he was simply wrong. Of that Sigga was certain. It also meant she couldn’t trust to confide in him. At least now she knew. Knowing where he stood on the matter somehow made it better, even if their views were polar opposites of each other.
She uncrossed her arms as they continued walking. Some of the tension in her shoulders seemed to ease. Firebrand was now confiding in her some of Jun’s personal matters. His backstory, so to speak.
It was strange to hear. Awkward even. She didn’t know why he was telling her this. Or… maybe she did. It wouldn’t affect her, though. She wouldn’t tell anyone, but it didn’t endear him to her either. Sigga knew how to keep a secret. But that was it. She wasn’t so easily manipulated.
Her hands slowly found their way into the pockets of her shorts where they briefly rummaged around. One of them remained hidden there while the other withdrew a half-eaten granola bar, which the fish immediately began scarfing down. Her attention didn’t wane, however.
Sigga didn’t know this other Suzuki that the pink-haired man mentioned. Maybe the name had been dropped during some overheard conversation, but that was it. Hyou, on the other hand, was someone the fish was familiar with. She might even deign to call him a friend. Maybe this was why Sigga didn’t take too kindly to Firebrand labeling him as mentally stunted. That was just a rude thing to say about someone behind their back.
The girl’s incisors decimated the remains of the granola bar.
There was a bit of backpedaling Firebrand kept doing in their one-sided conversation. She didn’t know if this was something teachers were taught or what. First, tear someone apart with harsh criticisms, then posthumously soften the blow with a minor compliment or even a defensive quip. Sure, she did that too sometimes, but only when nervous. And she didn’t think Firebrand was nervous in front of her. Why should he be?
Sigga crumpled the wrapper into a tiny ball and hucked it at a passing garbage can. The crinkled plastic teetered precariously on the garbage can’s rim before concluding it was better to please the fish, and dropped into the waste container silently.
Instead of continuing on this particular line of their conversation, Sigga took Firebrand up on his offer. Something had been clawing at the back of her mind that she hadn’t planned on discussing, but this was the perfect opportunity to voice her thoughts. Maybe she could ease some of her subconscious worries and change the subject all in one go. “How’s Hush holding up?”

He watched her carefully. Seemed something didn't quite agree with her. As he thought about what, she did ask her question. "As good as one could be in that circumstance. Tiny morsels of the truth is coming out, finally. But only in backhanded comments or when he thinks no one is listening..." He trailed off as he looked like he was thinking. Then it kind of dawned on him, making him fluster and blush ever so slightly in embarrassment. "I'm not defending Jun at all. Borderline was the wrong thing to say...since a bully of bullies is still, in the end, a bully. Not that you are one, based on what I've seen and what your record is. And Jun's cooperation is purely in the combat sense it seems. It...sounds like I'm backtracking doesn't it..." He scratched his cheek a little. He's...had some interesting students in the past, but none ever so hung up on words as this one. She was going to be a difficult one to get through. He decided to probe somewhat into it. "You're...quite a bit more specific on word usage and communication, aren't you?" He'd let her answer that before moving on. Or answer a question if she had one.
"I can see the electrocution bothered you. And yet, you didn't lodge a complaint about it. Remember what I said about oversight being understaffed and overworked? Even if they see something while off the clock, most don't report because they're busy enough as it is. Which has its own set of issues, don't get me wrong. But anyways, you need to report it. At the very least, it leaves a trail. So even if those that did wrong get a slap on the wrist, it could still come back to bite them in the ass. So, when we get back, might go ahead and lodge a formal complaint like you would at any other job. I can walk you through it. Anything else crossing your mind?"

Sigga’s expression looked a little distant, thoughtful even, at the mention of the traumatized young man she had met on her second day of interning at Flame On. Perhaps she saw a bit of herself in the defiant cripple. Little would have had to be different for her life path to have led to similar circumstances. Heck, things had almost ended up worse. Those were unhappy thoughts though, and Sigga was quick to banish them from her mind.
Though presumably unintentionally, Firebrand managed to help eliminate the bald teenager’s negative mindset with a sudden tangent. Or rather, a return to an earlier topic of discussion.
Her observation spheres seemed to widen a little at the change in conversation. How was she always getting caught off guard like this? One thing was for certain. Just like in yesterday’s practice spar, she had completely underestimated the pink-haired man. The other day it was the creative bit of subterfuge he utilized with his bow. Now it was with some sort of social perception. Adults were scary like that. Well, some were.
The student had always thought herself as being pretty smart; attentive to body language and subconscious cues that let her read a person without using her Quirk. Though she couldn’t say for sure, it seemed like Firebrand was several dozen levels above her in that respect. That realization led her mind onto another track. What was his Pro-Hero rank? Was that something she had looked up before and forgotten? Or did her casual stalking of the man’s online profile not turn up that particular tidbit of information?
These questions were quickly jettisoned in lieu of her having to focus on parsing some sort of reply to what he was currently saying. “Uh…” said the fish.
Firebrand’s mention of backtracking showed some sort of introspective side of him she hadn’t expected. But Sigga seemed to have become quite good at not expecting things by this point. She should just go ahead and list that on her CV.
“Uh, I guess?” she replied. His phrasing of that question regarding communication seemed… strange to her. Like it was some carefully worded observation on her… observation skills, or something.
Her gapping jaw snapped shut at the mention of Jun’s motivation tactic during her run. She almost retorted with a snide comment, but stopped short as Firebrand continued explaining his observation. Well of course she hadn’t reported it. In her worldly view, such an action would only inflame a situation. Escalate instead of mitigate. It was far easier to run from such a problem. Which she had. Literally.
Her teeth began nervously biting her bottom lip before she realized what she was doing and stopped it. With his clear mastery of reading body language, at this rate it wouldn’t surprise her if that little nervous tick was enough for Firebrand to tell what she had for lunch three Wednesdays ago.
Reporting the incident was something someone that was more hero material than her would do. But if she didn’t report it now that the subject was brought up then she’d look like a hypocrite and a fool. Once again Sigga wasn’t sure what was worse, looking foolish or prideful. Or maybe she did know, which was why the intern nodded her head solemnly at the suggestion.
If there was one thing this internship had done a spectacular job of, that was dragging the fish out of her comfort zone.
“Not really,” she said at last, at the man’s final question. “-or,” she began again, hesitant to make the request. “Uh, is there anybody else I could train with instead?” The look of apprehension on her face made it clear that she wasn’t feeling too hot with the idea of doing anything alongside the blond. Especially if she was to report him to HR or whatever.
While she had plenty of reason to make the request, there was still a nagging feeling of guilt at the back of her mind. It felt rather prissy of her to be making any sort of request after having been accepted to intern at the agency. She felt a little like she was taking more than she was giving back. This was her first time participating in anything resembling an internship though.

She didn't seem to have anything else, but still seemed a bit apprehensive about reporting it. But now that the thought was there, he could tell that she was struggling with looking too prideful or foolish. Oh how he remembered those days. He still had small bouts of that on occasion. Still, she nodded solemnly and asked a question. A new training partner, huh. Well, that could be arranged, since her current one wasn't being very helpful. "That can be arranged. Haruka doesn't have a lot on her plate, she can help out with preparation. And that encompasses a lot more than just training and being in tip top shape. So feel free to ask her questions. Anything else?" If not, he'll lead them back, and tell Haruka the situation after walking Sigrid through the complaint process. She nodded and joined Sigrid in the training room.
"So, you need to be ready for your sparring match against boss, eh? Alright, first, let's start with any questions you may have." Jun looked over at the sidekick with interest. So, since he wasn't going to train her unless she devotes herself to being a hero, Firebrand decided to waste one of his sidekick's time. Ok, whatever. He'd just watch for now, and see if he could get any tips himself.

The fish had no more questions for Firebrand, nodding her head in the negative. With that, the two of them headed back towards the training room.
There was plenty of time for Sigga to think during the walk back. Her previous review of Flame On’s head had long since been jettisoned, though a new judgement had not replaced it. It was… weird. She was now finding herself curiously incapable of deciding what she actually thought of the pink-haired man. For someone who spent a relatively inordinate amount of time expounding, the Pro Hero somehow remained an enigma to the bald student. This bothered her. What’s more, the fact that it bothered her, bothered her as well. It all harkened back to her survival instincts.
Being able to quickly identify who or what was a threat and to what degree was an innate part of Sigga’s personality matrix. She couldn’t know how best to avoid exacerbating a deteriorating situation if she couldn’t understand how each piece on the board functioned. While other student’s took a more hands-on approach to life’s problems, Sigga was more prone to overthinking a situation. She was now becoming a bit more aware of this flaw in her character. And so, the teenager discarded the rest of her thoughts on the pending situation. She’d simply take things one step at a time.
Before long, Sigga found herself being introduced to Flame On’s sidekick, Haruka. It had come as a bit of relief to hear Firebrand already had someone in mind for the intern’s request. She followed the woman’s instruction through the complaint process before following her to the training room. The fish secretly hoped that would be the end of that topic. Escalating a situation in any manner, even if it was the morally sound thing to do, went against her instincts. At least for now she had something else to focus on.
Firebrand had, at this point, left the two of them to their thing. Or three of them, rather. Sigga could see Jun was still in the room from the corner of her eye. He certainly wouldn’t know yet of the complaint she had reluctantly filed against him. Hopefully it would stay that way. At least until her internship finished, if not for good. Once again she dismissed the errant thoughts in order to focus on the task at hand.
Sigga stood across from Haruka in the center of the room. She didn’t know anything about this woman, but the fact she was a Sidekick at Flame On could prove a colossal boon to her upcoming match. Who better to inform her of how to take on the agency’s head.
She nodded as Haruka spoke. Sigga had loads of questions about the archer, but she’d start with the most basic, fundamental piece of insight she needed regarding her future spar. “Can I win?”
Whether Haruka had any insight on Sigga’s capabilities, like from reading the agency’s file on her or having witnessed her previous match, was something the fish did not know. But her new instructor surely recognized the pink-haired man’s capabilities and had some inside knowledge on how he sparred with his interns. What Sigga wanted to know was if she had any chance of beating the man even with all the handicaps of those extra weights he had tying him down or if the match was simply meant to test her capabilities as well as her character when facing an insurmountable challenge.
Whatever the answer, Sigga wasn’t going to simply cop out. But if Firebrand really was too experienced for her to defeat then she could focus more on her endurance rather than gambling at risky tactics that would prove futile anyway.

"Given the scenario...yes. The odds are long, I'd personally still give the odds 40 to 35 percent chance at winning. However, you were able to beat the first hurdle: just getting close, without really knowing what he can do. If you know your opponent's moves and tendencies, you can better plan ahead. Though it's always good to keep it flexible. Part of being a hero is overcoming the odds. Keeping in line that atrociously corny school motto. So, ask away. Knowing is half the battle." If Sigga wanted the best of chances, she would have to ask what all he can do with his quirk, and the specifics about the use of the bow, and not using it, plus what all he can do without it. Haruka was going to be a well of knowledge for Sigga to tap into...she just needs to ask.
And train a bit. A day's training was hardly going to matter much, but staying limber and preparing for the battle ahead was all good things to do. Jun was simply listening in. So, they knew that the odds were going to be a long shot. But just what kind of resolve will Sigga have in completing the challenge?

The smooth-domed fish’s eyes widened, brow furrowed, and upper lip twitched involuntarily, completing Sigga’s look of bewilderment. She had expected to be given low odds, but the numbers Haruka spoke had been… unanticipated. That’s… basically one in three, she thought to herself, simplifying the estimate.
Sigga snapped her gaping mouth shut before someone could pour sand into it or something. She was still coming to terms with those odds. If the woman had suggested a percentage reduced by a factor of ten, it would have elicited less of a reaction. In her mind, Haruka’s appraisal of her chances of success were, well... astronomical.
“You really think so?” Sigga said, head listing to one side. Despite being told she was more likely to lose than win, the words had elicited a rather positive reaction in the intern.
Haruka explained, having observed or possibly heard second hand about the youth’s previous spars with Firebrand. Sigga had gotten close. The fish hadn’t quite realized the significance of this accomplishment, but it sorta made sense in hindsight. It stands to reason that the pink-haired man was more capable at range than up close. Especially when weighed down. It wasn’t reason enough to underestimate him in close quarters, however.
Sigga listened to the rest of the green-eyed Hero’s reply, nodding briefly before standing in silence for a few moments as her mind processed her thoughts. It sounded like Haruka was willing to spill the agency head’s strengths and weaknesses, but the woman wouldn’t simply serve him up on a platter. Sigga’d have to ask the right questions. “Hm...”
The intern crossed her arms, tapping one oversized index finger against her nosecap in contemplation. There were just so many things to ask. Where should she begin?
She pondered on the previous fight, a slight curl returning to her lips. Sigga was remembering how Firebrand had surprised her with the fact he didn’t need a physical bow to fire his arrows. His Quirk could just manifest one out of thin air. That had really caught her off guard. She shouldn’t have assumed. The topic of the man’s Quirk seemed like the most obvious subject with which to start.
“So,” Sigga began, chuckling at the memory, “I found out that Firebrand doesn’t actually need a physical bow to use his Quirk. He just sort of-” and the girl flicked her hand through the air as if conjuring an imagined weapon, “-and he’s good to go.”
The girl uncrossed her other arm, bracing her wrist against her hip as she continued. “Does his Quirk involve anything besides, uh, Incendiary Archery?” Sigga didn’t know what to call his abilities, or what description the agency used when referring to his Quirk. There were a lot of things she wanted to ask about his ability, but first she wanted to confirm he didn’t have a dual Quirk like she did.
And speaking of needing a bow, “- and does he even need a bow, period? Like, can he just conjure up a javelin or Kamehameha someone’s ass with a ball of fire?”
It was an alarming thought, fighting someone with a Quirk that versatile. While Sigga hadn’t actually seen Firebrand manipulate flames without a bow there was something about his Quirk she had observed. “I noticed that there was some, uh, variation to the fire arrows he could shoot… I think.” In the heat of battle she hadn’t quite figured out the minutiae of the searing arrows. It was difficult, to say the least, taking mental notes on an opponent's Quirk while simultaneously trying to avoid getting flambéed. “Any insight on, like, the, uh, properties of the arrows he can fire?”

Haruka nodded resolutely. And waited for the young lady to speak up. She did find it humorous of Sigrid's little impromptu weapon conjuring. "No. Incendiary archery is quite literally what his quirk is. The physical bow actually weakens his quirk, and let's him fight for longer. And improves his accuracy, since the fire bow is wavy and slightly unstable. He can't conjure his arrows and use them as makeshift melee weapons. So no javelins or Kamehameha blasts without it being some sort of specialty arrow. It's still a flexible quirk, but it is very strictly just incendiary archery. As far as his various fire arrows go...he does have a basic arrow that you'll see most often, and typically has enough punch to put a normal adult on the ground. Not necessarily permanently or anything, just literally knock them down. He does have a warning shot that does barely anything.
He has three different versions of Fire Rain, each one getting stronger, but smaller area of effect. The effect ranges from 60 yards to 15 yards. He shoots an arrow up, then it explodes and down come flames.
Sniper's Flame and Searing Flame is similar in that they're high powered moves, with Sniper's Flame having his longest effective range, and while Searing does have a shorter range, it does burn hotter. You saw that one already. It tends to cauterize the wounds it makes, so it's extremely painful.
Shotgun and Barrage Flames are difficult to dodge. Barrage Flame his a longer reach. Shotgun Flame does have a minimum range of five yards. They burst into smaller fire arrows.
Force Blast is also one I think you saw, but it helps with mobility, and just blows hot air at you.
Branding Flame is his supermove, so I doubt he'll use it. It's hot enough to leave a permanent scar on someone, but doesn't penetrate otherwise. Though it does have the physical force to knock back a typical adult twenty feet and leave them with bruised ribs.
At shorter ranges, it's easy to tell where he's aiming at, so it does become easier to avoid getting shot. The trick is getting close, simply because of his wide variety of arrows he can fire. His quirk runs on the oxygen in his blood, so if you go with a match of attrition, he will eventually run out of steam. Up close, he's a brawler, with enough martial skill and experience to have seen most things. Not many people grab his bow and tried to attack him using it. Most that tried didn't have the speed or the skill to pull it off or pull it off so smoothly." It was a long speech, but the girl wanted info, so info she got.

The two, gleaming amber orbs remained focused on Haruka as she spoke. Sigga was nothing if not studious and was more than willing to tap into the fountain of knowledge the agency’s sidekick embodied.
Despite the previous bouts, the fish was only now learning that there was some depth to the thermodynamics in Firebrand’s Quirk. The flames, as scary as they were, were but one facet. Apparently even his basic arrows provided enough concussive force to topple an opponent over.
A bead of sweat trickled down the side of Sigga’s scalp. She had expended quite a lot of energy evading the flaming arrows terrified that they were going to burn her, but it turns out they would have probably done that and knock the wind out of her too. Yikes!
And there were more than just a few variations. As Haruka continued listing off the pink-haired hero’s other abilities, Sigga made sure to take detailed mental notes. She tried to come up with ideas on how one might counter some of the barrages, but the only ideas that came to mind were theoretical, based on stuff she learned in physics class, and weren't of much use from a practical standpoint. If only her Quirk allowed her to spit water, instead of simply breathe in it. Ugh.
There was that Force Blast ability to watch out for too. That’d be inconvenient to deal with as much as any searing arrow. It would mean making direct contact with the man that much more difficult. And if she couldn’t even touch him then her own Quirk would be completely useless in the fight. Even with all this data this… was going to be tough.
Sigga’s gaze had drifted to the floor, though she was still listening attentively as Haruka described Firebrand’s supermove. While the young fish’s attention may have been split between processing the new information and coming up with useless hypothetical ways to counter it, it was far easier for her than any physical activity. Huh. Maybe that was where she should focus on… If she could get better at simply dodging fast-moving projectiles…
“Yeah. Let’s hope not.” the teen chuckled nervously in reply to the woman’s vocalized doubt about Firebrand using his supermove on her. Hopefully Haruka was right about that. And if not, at least she wouldn’t have to worry about the tribulations that came with old age. Cause, you know. She’d be dead?
The final bit of information provided had to do with the incendiary Quirk’s fuel. Oxygen. Specifically oxygen in Firebrand’s blood. Interesting...
As usual the fish came up with some more counters to the Quirk, but like the others they too weren’t very practical. And a battle of attrition was definitely not in the cards. Not if she was meant to be dodging projectiles all the while. Sigga could take four exams in a single day and not break a sweat, but her physical endurance was pretty much non-existent. She’d have to find a way to better the odds. But where to start?
“H-how would one go about, uh… do you have any ideas or, uh, tips on getting better at dodging his arrows?” That seemed like it would be the most cost-effective time-to-benefit workout she could do for the upcoming spar; learning how to better evade. Haruka had already mentioned it would be easier to dodge Firebrand’s attacks up close where one could better predict where his attack would land. But as for how one might practice said dodging, Sigga had no idea. Maybe repurpose a baseball pitching machine or two?
