Feral’s ears flew back at the other student’s sudden surge in interest, but she otherwise mastered the instinct to flinch. Was this good interest or bad interest? The faintly-fish girl had seemed both joking and rule-focused. That made it hard to figure out what was going on here. People were so complicated!
And now things were getting even more strange, though Feral wouldn’t have thought it possible a heartbeat before (and honestly, her heart wasn’t at its slowest at the moment). Crow was no more than mildly annoyed, but it was because he was no longer being patted rather than trying to cause such a state. And yet the other student looked more likely to panic and bolt than Feral!
She waited. The bolting hadn’t happened, so she might get an explanation if she just -
Phew. There was enough un-animal sense to the other student’s incomprehensible alarm for her to speak rather than immediately physically deal with the situation, whatever she thought it was.
Which....
Was...
Confusing. Very confusing. Feral stared down at the crouched girl (an odd enough angle when Feral wasn’t the only human involved). A physical extension? Where did she even get such a weird idea? Feral gave it a few more long seconds after the desperate attempt to clarify, her only outward movement the flick of one ear as the conversation finally caught a dog’s attention from on the balcony, and then released a tiny, bemused snort. ”Crow and the others are their own, not part of me.” How much information should she let out? She didn’t know anything about this girl. She didn’t even know who she was, although she did seem like a student... and she apparently lived in the same hallway. ”I’ll tell you more if you tell me about you?” It was just a little trade. It was the sort of thing that was normal among people, right?

As a rule Sigga normally avoided asking others about their Quirks. Even vague questions on the subject seemed personal and common decency dictated that it was none of your beeswax. Of course, not bringing the subject up with strangers had the ulterior benefit of the girl not having to discuss her own capabilities. She found out the hard way that people did not like the idea of having their thoughts read, even if they knew physical contact was required for the fish to do such a thing. Simply being in the same vicinity drew ire from others, so the girl learned to keep mum when it came to that facet of her Quirk.
She had also resigned to the fact that eventually others in the academy would learn about her innate abilities so making sure she did not make any physical contact with any of her peers was her way of preemptively nixing any future concerns of her classmates wondering if she had ever read their thoughts before they became aware of her Quirk. Normally she wore bright pink mittens in order to draw attention to the fact her hands were obviously shielded from any potential accidents, but in her excitement she had neglected to put them on when she followed the black cat out of her room.
The apprehension in Sigga’s face melted completely away. It was as if nothing of concern had occurred. Evidently the animals being… well… normal animals was something not to be taken for granted. She had broken her own rule on inquiring about someone’s unique ability, but it was necessary to avoid any risk of breaking the rule of physical contact. Now that caution was no longer required, the bald girl doubled down on her previous obligation and returned to massaging Crow with, not one, but both hands. Her fingers delicately kneaded the tender muscles beneath the feline’s fur coat. It had been decided, by some unspoken decree, that all other priorities were now secondary in nature.
The tall-eared biped’s explanation was followed by an offer to exchange information. Apparently Sigga’s earlier eagerness to pry into someone else’s Quirk had been taken note of. The teen wasn’t exactly looking for an additional exchange of information. She had already gotten the most valuable data from the individual already, but that didn’t mean her curiosity had simply switched off. Fortunately the proposal didn’t specify any following discourse had to be on the subject of Quirks, and Sigga really wanted to know what other animals would be calling this dorm their home. If there was a goat… the girl would lose her mind.
“I’m Sigrid.” she quickly replied, her eyes moving away from her now-automated digits up to the tall- wait, no, short (it was difficult to tell due to the ears) person she was conversing with. “‘Live on this floor too.” the teenager added, her head gesturing in the direction of her own room. Sigga didn’t remember seeing this person in her class, but that didn’t really mean much. She, herself, had only recently started attending UA and despite everyone’s unique appearance, the chaos of people seemed to sort of blend together since she didn’t really pay much attention to her other classmates during class.
The fish figured the rather mundane bits of data she just offered would allow for another question to be answered, one that wasn’t at all Quirk-related. Well... sort of. “So…” she began, not at all forgetting about the very informative words of pack and them that had been uttered by the other student. “-what other animals do ya got?”

Whatever it was that had worried the other student, it was no longer an issue, it seemed. Her face had cleared and her hands had returned to pleasing Crow, who also ceased to be concerned. But. There was almost something off about how concerned she had looked, for it to be resolved by so little information.
Of course, Feral had zero idea of what to do with her suspicion, or how to confirm it without just making a big mess of anything, So.
A name! Sigrid. She did not recognize this name. But there was slightly more information! A confirmation of nearby-ness. Which explained Crow. Okay. Sigrid. She should remember that. She could remember that! Sigrid. Sig-rid or Sih-grid?
Maybe she just wouldn’t have to ever say it out loud. That would deal with that. Right now, certainly, she was talking to Sigrid and so she didn’t have to say the name and possibly not say it quite like Sigrid had. Her ears also pricked at the question, and the tip of her blonde tail waved behind her briefly. ”Quick and Kai are also here!”. She gave a short whistle, almost a chirp, and a large, furry, black snout immediately protruded between Feral’s hip and the door. From further in the room, a soft huff emerged, followed by the unhurried clicking of nails against the bare floor. The second dog was substantially shorter than the first, leaner and silkier, with grey splashed across her otherwise white face, and she plopped down again behind Feral, sleepily watching the stranger and the cat.
Feral leaned into the door and the too-hopeful brat casually trying to shoulder his way past. ”This is Kai, and this is Quick,” she explained, indicating the black and then the white dog in turn. “Blue Weaver is also pack, but she isn’t an animal, and she doesn’t live here.”. This seemed to be good sharing and trading. ”If you are also on this floor... then you are in 1-B?”. Her ears wavered a little bit. She didn’t like being in class, although she liked learning the things.

“Oh!” Before she could take a guess what kind of animals were paired with those names, the other teen whistled and two obedient canines rose to meet the fish. When Sigga had woken up this morning, the last thing the girl had expected to discover was a hidden menagerie on the same floor she resided. If she could befriend her classmate, the close proximity of their room would essentially leave the student with all the benefits of being a pet owner without the entailing responsibilities. Brilliant!
The furry quadrumvirate had assembled a sort of roadblock, arresting any access into the small room Sigga had been successfully lured to. Whether to hold onto as a snack for later, or in hopes of indoctrinating a new member into the pack, Crow’s role in the heist was usurped by the rather enthusiastic husky-mix now trying to force its way to the girl squatting at the door.
Sigga’s knees kissed the ground as her fingers pulled back from the cat, redirecting towards Kai in a manner mimicking the jaws of an alligator, pats inbound from above and below. “Who’s a good boy!?~” It seemed that the bald girl was at least partially human the way she mimicked the cooing some people were known for when they’ve been enraptured by a newborn or, as in this case, a dog. If there was some sort of social rule where one was supposed to ask for permission before interacting with someone’s pet, the girl was blissfully unaware of it.
“Yup!” the girl replied to the furry’s question, her amber peepers now pointed at the mutt she was attempting to pet. Though her attention was almost exclusively being given to her new target, Sigga was still very much aware of the other human’s presence... and the lack of their own name offered. Whether intentionally omitted or not, she wasn’t about to let the conversation move away from that particular detail. Glossing over the idea of who or what a Blue Weaver was, her head turned to face the other student. “And you are-?”

Kai had not met this person before, and she showed no sign of being afraid of him. In fact, she was already asking for something that was probably going to be excellent. The black dog leaned further into Feral’s side and snorted wetly up at her, earning a sigh and a moderately restrained eye-roll before she pushed the door open enough for him to bound forward into Sigga’s outstretched hands. Crow fluffed up, half-heartedly, at the theft of attention and sauntered into the forbidden depths of Feral’s bedroom.
Feral herself was not quite so sure how proceed with all of this. Sigrid was patting Kai, which wasn’t entirely new. She knew how to wait while people paid attention to the dogs. This, though, was in the midst of an unscripted conversation, and now it was crossing over a conflicting script even more than while she had been patting Crow. It was growing harder and harder to keep her tail relaxed and not twitching, and she wanted to shift her balance but didn’t want to look like she was about to attack or run away, even if human-people almost never noticed those things, except now she was starting to get stiff from standing so carefully still for so long.
And then Sigrid’s casual but so very pointed question-sentence sent blood rushing through Feral’s entire face, flushing so hard that even the insides of her ears darkened a bit if anyone were looking closely enough. She had asked for Sigrid’s name and that was normal and good, but names were supposed to be a trade thing, and she hadn’t done that. Right now. She had to fix it right now. Before it got even more delayed and wrong and awkward. ”I’m-“
Wait. Was Sigrid expecting it to be her legal name or her real name? How would she react to her real name? What if she gave Sigrid her legal name, and then Sigrid called it out in class or something and she didn’t realize it because the name was so foreign that it didn’t even usually register when someone said it out loud? She didn’t usually care what people thought of the name Feral, but this was a classmate and a person who lived almost concerningly close by, and who obviously really liked animals and would probably want to see her pack again. So now it mattered.
Feral made herself take a breath, and then a second. She tried not to fidget as the bulk of the anxiety eased, just a bit, like Kai rolling off her chest in his sleep. She tried again. ”My name is... Feral. To the school, though, it’s Akiko.”. She couldn’t stop her fingers from twisting the stretchy fabric at her waist. ”I don’t like Akiko.”

“Feral it is then.” Sigga said, smiling at her new acquaintance. She wondered what the nature behind the two different names was, but knew better than to pry. Names could be a complicated subject as was obviously the case here. Sigga’s own name, Sigrid, was the only name most people knew her by. You’d have to be particularly important to her to call the girl Sigga without risking her unbridled wrath. Fortunately, nobody in Japan was likely to be well informed of Scandinavian nicknames, never mind have the specific variations for someone named Sigrid memorized.
Her mind continued pondering on the various possibilities of how the name Feral had become attached to the student, or how the student became attached to Feral. It could just be their planned pro-hero name, or maybe the draw to it was due to a strong dislike of Akiko. They had said they didn’t like the latter of the two.
After a few seconds of giving Kai the attention he deserved, Sigga finally stood up. With Quick looking perfectly comfortable sitting behind Feral, the explorer decided there was no need to push her way in for more animal interaction. There was always next time. “Well, all four of you-” she began, making note to also include the only biped in the group as she gestured a thumb towards her own lair, “-are always welcome to stop by my room.” It had already been made pretty clear that Crow didn’t need permission to go where he pleased, but at least now official admission had been administered.

Not all, but a substantial amount of the tension faded from its outposts in Feral’s shoulders and ears and tail and throat and gut. Sigrid had not only not reacted negatively to Feral’s name but had also agreed to use it. One more person who wouldn’t end up calling her by her old name. It wasn’t that it was bad or anything, it just didn’t.... fit. It wasn’t her, whatever the paperwork said.
But she didn’t need to deal with any of that right now. Sigrid would call her Feral, and the whole pack liked her so far. Kai especially; he didn’t want her to stop patting him, and was trying to reinsert his head into her rapidly ascending hands. The moment he reared up, though, still following Sigrid’s movement, Feral clicked her tongue at him, sharp and firm but brief. Kai huffed and twisted to the side before his paws could make contact.
Feral offered a hesitant smile, not quite showing the edge of her teeth. ”He likes you. He usually tries to pretend he’s mean and scary, but all he really ever wants is to get his face rubbed.”. Her smile faltered as she ran out of things to say, and then was replaced by a small crinkle between her eyebrows as she tried to decipher Sigrid’s words. Was this sort of encountered called stopping by? But Sigrid had just followed Crow when she called him back after he wandered off and got into a place he shouldn’t have. So if this was reversed to take place at Sigrid’s room, when Sigrid didn’t appear to have a cat who would sneak into Feral’s room...
”Do you want them to visit you?” she asked, gesturing briefly to Kai (still hanging close and hoping for more attention) and Crow (somewhere out of sight in the room, so the gesture included Quick). She wasn’t sure what she would have to do with the interaction. ”You can ask, whenever we’re inside. And awake. Except for Crow, he sleeps all the time so it’s okay to wake him up.”

Sigga’s fingers had interwoven between each other with both palms making for an impromptu pillow behind the base of her skull. She took a step back and looked like she was about to lean against a wall that wasn’t there. But she didn’t fall over. The teen simply listed at a slight angle as if that was the most comfortable position to be standing in, surveying the reaction from her offer.
“Of course.” Who wouldn’t want some furbabies dropping by from time to time? Heck, she even knew of people with allergies that would gladly suffer through them for a chance to spoil someone’s pet with love and attention. The student had yet to solve the issue of what to do with some of the spare time on her hands. Sure, UA was known for a heavy course load, but either the former-thief’s work ethic was exceptional or her particular classes had yet to peak in the quantity of homework assigned. It very well could be both.
“Feel free to stop by unannounced too.” she added. “I don’t have family in the city, and I can usually finish up homework pretty quick...” A humble brag, but not inaccurate. The only time the fish had gotten stumped by an assignment was when she couldn’t remember what page number was meant to be completed. That had been for her mathematics class and, though she didn’t end up finding out what was meant to be handed in until it was due, some friendly advice in the online student chat channel suggested she simple complete all the pages she suspected might have been assigned. So she had. Duh! “‘M always up for a diversion.”
The girl simply stood there after finishing speaking, occasionally swaying as if she was a tree moved by some unseen wind. Sigga didn’t have anything left to add, though her mind tried to come up with some remark; some subject to discuss. She didn’t particularly feel like going back to her room. That’s where boredom waited with a knife. “You finish your homework?”

Sigrid leaned backward, comfortable in her own support, and watched Feral as Feral continued to watch Sigrid, still not entirely relaxed and definitely not anywhere near as chill as Sigrid was now. The assurance that she wanted visits from Feral’s pack helped, of course, and the simple fact that the conversation had gone on for a few minutes without anything especially stressful actually happening. A couple of confusing things, sure, but Feral chalked that up to her own inexperience with people society stuff.
At least, nothing especially stressful until Sigrid went and mentioned homework. Feral did not let her gaze slide into the room, or her memory supply what was left to do; there was always more to do. Always. Not all of it for UA itself, but still, there was always more things to write and struggle with and think about. So much paper. Nope. Not thinking about it -
Never mind that she had clearly been thinking about it for a while, since her ears noted a lull in the general noise level and conversation status, but then Sigrid went and directly asked about it.
Feral couldn’t hide her flinch, then, eyes sliding down and to the side as if not making eye contact would somehow make it easier to hide the fact that no, she had not finished her homework. Yet. Yet! She would get it done. There was just so much, and it never stopped...
Her hands slid behind her back to tangle in the long ponytail hiding beneath her tank until it met her tail. ”Mostly...” she reluctantly admitted. ”I thought there’d be more doing stuff...”

The bald teen could tell quite easily what the other girl thought of homework without needing to hear her speak. To Sigga, homework had been a welcoming distraction. Not all of it was interesting, and the difficulty of the assortment of subject matter meant to be studied varied quite substantially at times, but at least it kept her occupied. Well, until she finished it anyway. And she always finished it. Even if it wasn’t for the lack of alternative diversions, Sigga could not risk flunking out. At least not in her first year. Better keep her grades as high as possible for now, in case the latter classes ended up becoming… problematic. Feral’s wayward gaze and rather visible flinch told Sigga all she needed to know. ‘Mostly’ was just an optimists way of saying ‘no.’ The idea of offering to complete someone’s homework on their behalf, for a modest fee of course, had crossed the fish’s mind more than once. It was far easier than simply tutoring someone, in her experience. But that was another risk she couldn’t take at this time, and she didn’t want to take a chance in offending the pet owner with such an offer anyway. The teen had to find a more legitimate source of income at some point, though. “Heh. Yeah.” Sigga agreed with Feral’s remark. There was a lot more theory and less practicum than she had expected out of a school that churned out pro-heroes. Maybe that was simply due to the girls only being in their first year. She was fine with things being as they were, though. Classes that required some actual physical effort were the only ones that the girl struggled with. “Won’t hear me complaining.” she added. “If you ever need any help with it, though, let me know.” It wasn’t exactly an offer to tutor. Usually such a remark was given simply to be polite, but in reality this was just the tactician setting up further groundwork for future opportunities in which to interact with the animals. Maybe one day she'd even get a chance to fondle those curios looking ears. With the preliminary stratagems set, Sigga aimed to make herself scarce, lest her presence in distracting Feral from her homework any further ended up being a cause of frustration. She didn’t feel like going back to her room though. Fortunately, the distant sound of a familiar song being sung made for the ideal diversion. You could just barely make out a chorus of voices singing the rather popular piece of copywriter material known as Happy Birhtday to You. This was not a song she had expected to hear being sung in Japan, but the implications of the melody leaking from their dorm’s lobby were obvious. Introductions and overtures complete, Sigga punctuated her previous remark with a wave goodbye and set off towards the elevators. Maybe she could find out whose birthday it was and, more importantly, sneak some cake and pizza. [Exit Thread]

Feral glanced up. Did Sigrid maybe like the classroom stuff more than the running around fun stuff? Maybe... maybe Sigrid could actually help her the next time she got stuck, and she wouldn’t have to bug Blue Weaver when she was working or busy or anything. She certainly didn’t want to be constantly asking her tutor, because then maybe he would think that she couldn’t do it, and he might tell the school and there could be all sorts of issues down that road. She did not want to go down that road.
Besides, she was supposed to learn how to get help from other people, wasn’t she? Her ears flicked. Yes. Yes she was. So -
Sigrid was gone. Not very far, just down the hall, towards the echoing noise that often directed Feral to avoid the common space downstairs. Her ears flicked again, this time flattening back a bit, but Sigrid had turned away and the annoyance was with all the noise anyway, not her. Sigrid didn’t look like she had ears, not really. Although she could clearly hear. Maybe noise didn’t bother her? At least not as much, anyway. But Feral could probably hear better. That was why she had the ears! She gave them a little scratch before nudging all stray animals back inside the room with a foot. Still shedding a bit. This time of year was always so iiiiiitchy! And messy. Hair everywhere. Maybe she should clean it up before going back to her homework....
