It was a surprisingly nice day in Musutafu. Even though the weather forecast called for a miserable day, the opposite happened. Maybe the day decided to celebrate the end of another school week or maybe they just got lucky. Most people will say the former but most likely the latter was true. The buildings of U.A. cast large shadows as the day slowly came it the end. It had been a nice weekend day in Musutafu and most students have been motoring about. Some have decided to go into the town while some had spent the day relaxing around the school. Some students recounted their weeks to their friends and made jokes about dumb stuff that had happened to them already. As the sunlight danced across the ground, people could just feel the positive energy at the school. Everyone at the school was happy and enjoying their day. Well, most people were.
In a more isolated corner of the school grounds, covered by one of the large shadows of the buildings, sat a black haired girl wearing the school uniform. Most students had opted for more casual clothing today but the girl had not. She was not sure what compelled her to wear the clothes that she did but that was not her worry. She had gone outside and found this isolated spot to be alone. She knew if she stayed in her room people would want to visit her and the last thing she wanted to do was talk to people. Taking some cat food that she bought before she came to U.A., she took them to this isolated corner.
There were a few stray cat families that called U.A their home and Fu had made it her duty that they were fed. If there was anything she had a soft spot for, it was animals. Sitting cross-legged on the ground she watched as a few cats ate out of the food bowls while others sat next to her and purred for attention. There were about 12 cats, each cute in their own way. One had a big black spot around one eye while another looked like a tiger with the colour the fur was.
Picking up a brownish-orange coloured cat, Fu gave it a small kiss before asking it "Do you like it here? I'm sure you do. I feed you after all." Fu giggled a bit before setting the cat down. Giving a approving 'meow', it curled up in front of her.
Within the span of a couple weeks, Fu had made a best friend, kissed a boy, and left her school effectively. Most, if not all, students were there for hero related things. Even her new classmates in general studies had some intentions of hero work, was it working to get into the hero course or working a job that helped out heroes. It all was about heroes and Fu was already sick of it. During this short time her, she had pissed off at least one teacher and disappointed everyone in her original class. Even being in general studies, she could not escape the damn hero course. Some of her new classmates even had asked if they could take her now vacant place in 1-A.
The question that swirled around her head the most was why she was still at U.A. She guessed that Daiki was one reason but she was too young to really know if she truly loved him like in those stories she read all the time. She probably just be in his way when he becomes the next big hero. The same is the case with Ryuga. Both will waste their time trying to encourage someone who did not want to be. She was useless to them and her quirk was useless. If they had her quirk for a day they would understand. All of 1-A would understand how much of a fraud she was. She should have never been accepted into U.A. but here she was.
Far over the misty mountains cold To dungeons deep and caverns old We must away ere break of day To find our long-forgotten gold

While most students were relaxing or goofing off, ringing in the end of another hard week of studying and training, one student was still hard at work. Isamu always seemed like he was working hard, at least when anybody could see him. He had a tendency to keep to himself, finding secluded, out-of-the-way places to study or nap, and had a noted aversion to most large social gatherings.
The reason he was still working hard today, however, had nothing to do with any of that. Today was ratcatching day, his penance for breaking the rules of U.A., his parole, and just plain common sense. Sneaking off campus to meet with a known villain should, by all rights, have ended much more poorly for him than it did, even if it was one he already knew. His teacher had reasoned that it was suited to his skills and would perform a service for the school. And Isamu was beginning to suspect that she was aware of how completely unglamorous and grueling the work would be. Which made sense, upon further reflection. It was punishment, after all.
Several of the cats gathered around Fu suddenly perked up, ears and noses twitching before they took off, rounding a corner where they were met with fierce hissing and a shout of “Get! Scram!” One of the cats made a noise of its own before they returned, running right back for the safety of Fu.
“Damn people keep feeding the damn strays,” grumbled the always grumpy Isamu as he rounded the corner, dragging a rather large sack behind him. He had a small pack on his back, and he had changed out of his school uniform into an old t-shirt and shorts. He looked a bit unkempt as well, black fur matted here and there with a light smattering of dirt and dust. He stepped out from behind the wall and stopped, eyes narrowing a little bit as he took in the scene.
Great, not just one person feeding strays, but two people feeding strays. Why, exactly, did they have a rat problem again?
And of course it would be the younger Himura student, the one who had first vomited on herself and then abandoned class to switch tracks. To move down to general studies, even. It was hard for him to imagine how she even got into the hero track to begin with, a feat that he had to fight tooth and nail for (literally, during their practical examination), as well as convincing the school board to take him despite his troubled history and poor previous academic performance. It hadn’t hurt that he had nailed the entrance exam, of course, but even so… He had very little patience or inclination for those who would squander their opportunities so easily.
On the other hand, it was clear to see that there was something troubling his former classmate. Bad enough that she had fled from class over it. But not bad enough, yet, that she had fled the school. Still… even though he didn’t socialize, he did keep his ears open to gossip and talk—most people didn’t realize he was around, or that their whispering wasn’t quite quiet enough to keep him from picking up on things, and he had heard plenty of speculation about Fu and the empty seat in the hero course. And what was he training to be a hero for, if not to help those in distress?
Besides, avoiding any conversation with her or that gaggle of cats would have meant going all the way around the building in the opposite direction, and he was already tired of dragging that bag as it was.
He gave Fu a small nod, remaining by the corner and keeping an eye on the remaining cats. “Afternoon, Himura-san,” he offered, non-commitally.

Fu wondered what life had in store for her. Some destiny had brought her to U.A. for one reason or another. It could have been a great number of things if she looked at it. The first would have been her parents getting injured the way they did. While Fu was never one to idolise heroes the way most did at her old school, her parents were still people she looked up to. They had a pretty stressful job, opting to take the non-celebrity route when it came to their work so they had to work hard to earn their money. Even with that strain of constantly working, they were able to raise two children between the two of them. It was just something that impressed Futaba.
Starring at the windows of one of the buildings, she saw some student milling about. They might even be her former classmates. She wondered what they thought of her. Probably thought she was a coward.
Her brother was another person who could have been responsible of why she was here. Even though she never expressed the desire to be a hero, it could always have been in the back of her mind when he went off to U.A. How she thought he was super cool for doing what he was doing. She even imagined him and her becoming a dynamic due like her parents. How cool it would have been to be a famous sibling hero duo. Granted, she was younger when thought of this and these thoughts were even in her diary way before Ryuusei went off to hero school.
The last thing she could think of was wanting to prove people wrong. To prove all the people that picked on her that someone with a weak quirk like her could be a hero. How wrong she was. There was no way she can be a hero if she gets paralysed of a migraine after using her quirk for just a minute. No quirk control training or good talking to was going to change that. She was a disappoint to her family, friends, and herself.
Sighing a bit, she averted her eyes from the windows to notice the cats acting up. The cat she recently held moved closer to her while some moved behind her. Picking on cat up, she gave it a quick kiss. She knew how to calm them down.
Smiling a bit, she softly sang
"The world was young, the mountains green, No stain yet on the Moon was seen, No words were laid on stream or stone, When Durin woke and walked alone. He named the nameless hills and dells; He drank from yet untasted wells; He stooped and looked in Mirrormere, And saw a crown of stars appear, As gems upon a silver thread, Above the shadow of his head.
The world was fair, the mountains tall, In Elder Days before the fall Of mighty Kings in Nargothrond And Gondolin, who now beyond The Western Seas have passed away: The world was fair in Durin's Day."
Most cats seemed to calm down, purring in approval. Looking around to see the source of their original distress, she saw someone familiar looking. It was Isamu, her former classmate. From all people in her class, she probably had the least amount of interactions with compared to the rest of them. He probably was the most honest person in her class though, at least from what he could tell. Lowering her head slightly, she gave him a soft
"Hello Suzuki-san."
Fu noticed the bag he was carrying, wondering what it meant. Not her business to pry, she simply asked "How are you?"

Isamu loved his parents, and had spent most of his childhood idolzing them and even his older brother to an extent. He had always dreamed of following in their footsteps, becoming a big and strong hero just like they were. He just needed his growth to catch up to the other kids first. Unfortunately he kept falling further and further behind, his growth seemingly stunted permanently. And then, he had received the news from the doctor.
He did not have a panther quirk, which would be different but similar to his parents’ lion and tiger quirks. Nor was he a mountain lion, cougar, jaguar, or anything else of the sort. No, he would just be… a cat. His parents hadn’t treated him any differently—well, maybe a little, but not really—but it had changed how he saw himself compared to them. Especially after his younger sister had been born, and she turned out to inherit their mother’s Tiger quirk, soon towering over him despite being several years his junior (tall enough to be teased by the other kids in her class for being too tall, a problem he only wished he had.) He wasn’t his older brother, who possessed a Liger quirk, a combination of all of his parents’ might, and he wasn’t his younger sister, who didn’t have heroic aspirations but could at least connect with their mother as a daughter. He was the odd one out, and so…
He had given up. It hadn’t happened all at once, but slowly, over time, in bits and pieces. Until that one day when everything had crystalized, and he had been forced to take his own fate—and that of an innocent’s—into his hands. After that he had a new drive, a new purpose. If he had anything to thank Akuma for, it was that, and only that. Still, it meant he had a lot to clean up in his squandered life.
Including the school’s rats.
He shrugged a little, “Been better.” He caught the glace at the bag and nodded towards it. “It’s a bag of rats. Don’t worry, they’re all dead, but your strays shouldn’t be eating them.” You really shouldn’t be feeding strays anyway, thought Isamu, but he left that thought unvoiced. After a pause to consider what he should say, he settled on, “How is General Studies?”

Futaba was not sure what she thought of Isamu. She had little interactions with him outside of the few classes she had in hero course. She honestly could not remember talking to him when the others were around. Most of the time, one of the other students was around. If she was honest, she probably never was alone with Isamu. It was not surprising. Isamu seemed like the type of person who would mind his own business. That was Fu's best guess, at least. Petting one of the cats again, she looked at the bag her old classmate was carrying. After he told her what was in the bag, Fu gave him a slight nod. It was no business for her to pry. Her mother taught her better.
When he asked about General studies, Fu gave him a half smile. If she was honest, it was sort of boring compared to what she had to do with the hero classes. Not that she minded it though. She did not want to know what happened in the quirk control class. She knew she would have gotten hurt in that class and hero life was just not for her. General studies was fine. There are no issues with using her quirk. There was no need to use her quirk and she could focus on her koto studies and figure out if she was going to transfer to a music school back home.
"It's boring but that's just fine by me. Can do without the nasty rumours and such. I'd imagine you heard some." Fu shrugged a bit before motioning to the cats she was done feeding them. After a few moments, the cats walked away. Waving them goodbye, she gave more attention to her former classmate. "How is hero course? I'd imagine everyone is getting on. Now there is no dead weight in the class." She laughed a bit before picking up some of the cat food.

Isamu watched the cats leave and relaxed his guard just a little, dragging the bag to rest against the wall and taking a few steps closer to Fu. He shrugged a little in response to her comment about the rumors. “I might have picked up on a thing or two.” A blessing and a curse to having better hearing than most of the people around you. “I’m not terribly interested in what other people have to say about you, though.” Mostly because nobody else is going to be able to tell him what’s going on in her head.
“I don’t know about the dead weight. Satou-san’s mouth still runs faster than his quirk.” He said that with a deadpan, so it was hard to tell if he was joking or not. “Still, everyone’s trying their best.” Except you. Why is that?
There were questions he wanted to ask, but that weren’t, strictly speaking, polite. It was times like these that he wished he had more of a rapport with his classmates. It would make asking these kinds of questions so much easier. He had gathered that his former classmate had issues with her quirks, and apparently serious ones, but he had his fair share of quirk inferiority complexes. Then again, at least his quirk gave him some advantages, if he knew how to apply it correctly. Still, the fact that someone with an apparently unusable quirk got into U.A. was impressive in its own right. How much of that was family connections, he wondered.
“Why are you here?” he asked finally. “What made you enroll at U.A.?” Probably a more tactful way to ask that, but… he disliked beating around the bush too much.

Fu hummed as she started cleaning up the sets of cat treats that she had brought. The cats, as per usual, picked the treats clean. It was fine though. She did not mind buying treats and food for the cats. If she were allowed, she would adopt them all and keep them in her dorm room. However, she felt that even if the school would not object, her brother would. Sometimes she called him the fun police. Not in the traditional sense but rather, he was concerned about everything Fu did. When she declared her intentions after what happened with her parents, he tried to talk her out of it as much as possible. Even up until they came to U.A., he was trying to talk her out of it. She should have listened to him.
Chuckling a bit at Isamu's comment, she wondered how he was doing in class. She had not asked him about how class was going. She rather not, if she was honest. It would bring up old wounds that Fu would want to avoid. Watching Isamu move closer as the cats left for their homes, Fu wondered why he was so skittish of the other cats. They were lovely and rarely hissed at her. Anyway, that really did not concern her. The usual question that came up since she has gotten hear, and intensified ever since she left hero course. She even got an email from one of the hero course teachers asking that question.
Shrugging a bit, she said "Well, life happened and I was over my head. I had this dumb thought in my head that I could be like my mother. That I could achieve like she did but I was blessed with a quirk that kept me bed ridden for a month after the entrance exam." She paused for a bit before finalising her thoughts. "I don't know why I am here and could not tell you if I'm staying here much longer."

Isamu wasn’t afraid of other cats or skittish. But he really ddn’t want the strays getting into his bag of dead rats. Even if he didn’t approve of feeding them, at least the treats and food provided by Fu wouldn’t be carrying any diseases or pathogens. In fact, he had to be careful himself when handling them, lest he pick up some sort of pathogen. Thankfully, he could handle needles for as long as it took to get his regular innoculations. A regular cat could be more more resistant to the idea.
Once the cats were gone and his cargo was safe, he stepped closer and helped Fu pack up some of her treats. After a few moments of cleaning up in silence and digesting Fu’s words, he said quietly, “I can’t relate to having a quirk that causes you physical harm, but I can relate to what it’s like to feel disappointed in your quirk. And even wanting to follow in your parents’ footsteps.” He took a step back and studied Fu again, tail swishing slowly back and forth as he considered his next words.
“If you want some advice? Forget your quirk. If it won’t work for you, then work without it. While my quirk does have some advantages, I know it’s not the most powerful or flashy one out there, so I work and study hard to compensate for that. I’ve also found a niche I’m aiming towards. The way I see it, you’ll need to do the same.”
He turned back to his back of rats, checking that it was still secure. “If you want a second piece of advice, find your motivation and hold on tight to it. Don’t just do something because someone else did, do it because it means something to you. Find that one thing that burns brightly inside of you and chase it to the ends of the earth. Because if you don’t, you just end up with a lot of wasted time and lot of messes to clean up. Including some rats.”

Drawing her last name in the stylised character that usually were splashed about the newspapers back home. From them apprehending a criminal to bringing some villain to justice. The newspapers were always fun to read after Futaba's parents did something amazing. It always made the girl swell with pride. It showed that her parents were something special. They were celebrities back home and when they got hurt, their mailbox was full every hour or so. Most people poured their hearts out and the well-wished became overwhelming. Before they sorted all the letters in boxes, half a room was full letters and flowers. It was a bit ridiculous before Futaba left for U.A. Last time she called her mother, she said that they finally got through all of the letters.
As Isamu issued some of her advise, Fu wondered if it would be so easy for Fu to do these things. Quirkless hero? She wouldn't be able to do that. She was not exactly built as this super buff person. Unlike her, Isamu had a niche that could fit in. Fu did not. She might as well just become a police officer. Sighing, she muttered quietly "Easier said than done but I appreciate the advise. Really."
Taking a deep breath, she got up from where she was sitting. "Isamu...are your parents heroes?"

Isamu’s parents had been big and strong heroes, as befitting their animal quirks. They had big, exciting battles that Isamu had loved reading about when he was , dreaming of the day when he could join them in the field. His family even had a dojo that he had hoped to join someday, to learn everything his father had to teach about fighting. He had dreamed for the longest time about following exactly in their footsteps until he had received the news he never would.
If he couldn’t do it their way, then… he’d just have to find his own way forward. Of course, easy had never entered into the picture—there weren’t a lot of heroes with a quirk similar to his running around, so he was still improvising his way through his hero career.
“I never said it would be easy, mind. But it is worthwhile, if you have the drive for it. And you’re welcome.”
He looked up from checking the bag at Fu’s question and nodded. “Yes, they are. My older brother, as well. The only person in my family who doesn’t seem to have an interest in it is my younger sister. And I don’t think it would suit her.” And of course, he had heard what had happened to the elder Himura heroes, but decided to let Fu bring up that topic if that’s where she was going. She likely had had enough sympathies already, and he didn’t want to presume what she was about to ask or discuss whatever was wighting on her mind.

Futaba rarely liked talking about her parents. If she talked about them, usually it was just in passing. Saying something along the lines of 'My parents are heroes' or 'I grew up with hero parents.' The only people she really talked about her parents' accidents were her brother, Daiki and Ryuga. She trusted them the most and did not expect them to tell anyone else about her feelings. Naturally, Ryuusei would not as he was her brother and Daiki was her boyfriend so both of them are not going to violate her privacy. Ryuga was her best friend and would not betray her like that. Isamu was one of the students in her old class she barely talked to so she was not going to talk about her deep personal thoughts to him.
"I'd imagine it was a bit tough." Fu muttered when he told her about his hero oriented family. She remembered a sudden obligation she felt to become a hero as if it would be not Honorable if she did not become a hero. Her brother tried to talk her out of attending U.A. around that time. She should have listened to him.
"Growing up, I was never expected to be a hero but now I feel like I have to be one. When I was in hero class though, I never felt that actual drive in myself. Being hero felt like an obligation. I'm figuring myself out and I think I need to come to the conclusion if I want to be a hero or not and if I was till in hero studies at this time, I would drag everyone down." Fu nodded a bit before asking
"Does that make sense?"

By the same token, Isamu wasn’t really looking for sympathy for his own situation. His ear flicked ever so slightly when Fu made her comment and his eyes glanced sidelong at her for just a moment, but Isamu let it pass, since she hadn’t set it out loud and directed it at him.
When the girl explained a little bit about her thought process, including that she felt an obligation to be a hero, he stopped fiddling with the bag and turned to face her, nodding a bit. He stood up straighter, looking his fellow student right in the eye. “It is an obligation. But not to yourself, or to your family. It’s an obligation to your fellow man. It’s an obligation to listen for every lost voice crying out in the darkness of misfortune or another’s misdeeds, to reach out to them, and to say, ‘I am here. I will bring you back into the light.’”
His ears flicked backwards for just a moment and he broke eye contact, clearing his throat. He turned back to his bag, making sure it was secure before hefting the opening onto his shoulder again and turning back to the other student. “I can’t tell you what’s right for you. But I don’t think hero work is the place for half-hearted attempts. Heroes are those on the frontline of that obligation, risking life and limb for the sake of others. But there are other ways to serve, and there is no shame in admitting that this particular path isn’t for you.”
He glanced around a bit, scanning the area to make sure they were truly alone back here, and that there was nobody in the building to overhear. “Look, I understand what you’re going through. It took me a long time to realize that I could walk this path, and before that… Let’s just say I was pretty lost. Just take your time and make sure you make the choice that’s right for you, whatever it is.”
He made no motion to leave just yet, waiting to see if Futaba had anything else she wanted to say or talk about.

"Thanks, Isamu-san." Futaba muttered, giving her fellow student a bow. Isamu's words did mean a lot to Futaba. Getting encouraging words from Ryuga and Daiki helped but they were never enough. They never had to deal with her problems. They never had to doubt themselves in the way Fu had. Futaba has always had self-esteem issues with her quirk. People would rag on it and pick on her for being a failure because he quirk was not as powerful as the rest of her family. She would lie to her family when they asked if she was okay. She lied to them that she was not effected by it. The constant bullying made Fu scared to use her quirk Scared that when she used her quirk around her fellow students at U.A. that they would laugh at her. It was bothersome and Fu hated admitting it that she had the issue.
Getting up from her spot, Fu gave Isamu a bow. "I should be going now I think. I have some work to do and I'd imagine Sato-sensei is keeping the class busy. Have a nice day, Isamu-san." Fu smiled before turning around and leaving her usual spot. She had some general work she wanted to get done so she had no work for the rest of the week. Plus, she wanted to get to bed earlier again. She could feel a mild headache coming on and wanted to stop that from escalating before anything long term could happen.

When Fu mentioned Aoi keeping the class busy, Isamu muttered “Some of us more than others” under his breath to himself. He returned the bow, You’re welcome, Himura-san. I hope you find the answers you’re looking for.” He watched his classmate leave, and then turned his attention back to his bag, grabbing the end and slowly resuming his dragging. I need to remember to build a robotic platform to haul stuff for me.. Put that on the list of gadgets, I guess.
Even though he had he had committed to his decision to become a hero, he still had doubts that plagued his own mind. Questions about his quirk’s suitability for hero work still plagued him, and even admitting as much as he had to Fu, no matter how limited, was difficult. Hopefully the other student wouldn’t betray his trust—though he’d hardly be surprised if he found out other students had self-doubt issues, he still didn’t want his business getting out. He knew suppressing those doubts wasn’t really healthy, but he had reached some kind of equilibrium where his natural stubbornness could propel him through the normal day-to-day.
As for the other student… Isamu weighed his opinion of the girl as he watched her walk away. He could hardly hold the incident with her vomiting against her, since the body would do what it wanted in regards to stress, and it’s not like they were already battle-hardened heroes yet… and it was clear she was grappling with some issues. Still, the fact that she abandoned the class seemed to weigh against her.
“Guess we’ll have to see where she goes from here,” he said to himself as he turned back to his bag and started dragging it again.
