Even though the punch was geared towards Kogami, it didn't necessarily mean that he was going to be hit without any sort of protection. This was a test for the young hero, more or less. He wanted to see just how much power was put in the punches of his newfound friend. The quirk itself had turned him into some kind of minotaur, but if it only gave him strength, he wanted to see if his hardening mercury absorb most of the could absorb most of the impact. The mercury itself came fro Kogami's pores and hardened outward just before the minotaur's fist made a connection. However, Kogmai quickly learned that people with a strength-based quirk were people that shouldn't be messed with.
The impact itself pushed Kogami back, but with what he experienced, he managed to get away from receiving any sort of broken ribs. The punch did break through Kogami's makeshift mercury barrier, but it softened the blow as something survivable and even less intense since Quincy was holding back anyway. However, something strange started to happen. Quincy's stance and posture were rather different. Did he lose control? That can't be good.
Thinking fast, Kogami used the mercury that was already on Quincy's monstrous body and started to manipulate it. He had all of it converge to Quincy's head in order to attack his face. The damage itself wasn't important right now, but what Kogami wanted to take away from the interaction was to blind Quincy and take away one of his senses. Sure, he would be rampaging angrily due to that, but he wouldn't be able to see where he's going and he would be making random guesses at Kogami. But still, it was mostly gambling on the fact that his senses weren't heightened as well. Maybe it'll buy him a couple of moments?
As the charge came his way, Kogami dodged out of the way after hearing Airin's yell. Diving to the left in order to tuck and roll, also banking on the fact that the minotaur was possibly blinded after being attacked in the face. But that was a shocker, Airin noticed the change as well, Quincy was out for blood.
"We can't end the sparring just yet. That was too soon. We barely started and he already lost control. He has to fight it!"
They were still fighting, but Kogami still tried to talk Quincy through this from 10 feet away.
"Quincy, listen to my voice, you need to tame that beast. Don't let it control you. It's not necessarily about fighting the beast, this is you!. You need to accept that part of yourself, but you also need to understand that you get to decide what happens with your power, no one else. Imagine a leash, a collar, something!"
