Swinging her legs under the chair, she felt more like a child than she ever had here. Even when she first crept in, following the shadowed back of a person she had not yet then learned to trust, she had simply felt more wild. And afraid. Afraid of everything. Also numb. There had been a lot of that for a while.
And the chairs in the front waiting room had been even worse back then! At some point, someone had changed them. They no longer had solid backs, chairs designed solely for the use of people who did not have tails. Now she could perch in a squishy fake-leather thing big enough that she had to tilt her feet for her toes to touch the old barely-carpet floor, still the same worn greenish-grey with skinny brownish stripes, and her tail hung out the back with only an irritating level of discomfort, rather than an intolerable level.
Not that she needed to be in a dumb chair here much anyway. Not only was she spending less time here, but she basically never spent time in this part of the agency anyway. She always got to go to the back, or at least stay in Blue Weaver’s office. She didn’t have to stay in a chair in either area. She could stand without drawing attention from strangers, or sprawl on the ground comfortably and it was okay. As long as she wasn’t in the way, at least, but that was fair enough. Today, though, nooooo. Today she had to wait in the front, in a chair. By herself.
That didn’t make it any easier. Kai and Quick were both lounging around - comfortably on the ground - back in her room on campus. Crow was being Crow, after dashing out through the open balcony doors that morning, but according to her phone and his tracker he wasn’t going anywhere he shouldn’t. Sleeping and hunting. Those were good things to be doing. Waiting was not a good thing. Waiting in a chair was worse. And what was she even waiting for? Someone. There was some someone who was supposed to talk to her, and it had to be here at the agency.
So the scrawny blond student swung her legs like a child, her oversized ears flattened against her skull in petulant display of her less-than-stellar mood, and her slender hands jammed into the pockets of a plain black hoodie Blue Weaver had given her just last month. The name of the pro hero agency she now waited (uncomfortably) in was embroidered across the back and left breast in white thread, and both it and her black leggings were generously dusted with black and white hairs. She even had shoes on, despite the mild, dry weather. Blue Weaver had specified, so she wore them, but the black rubber boots didn’t really help her look any older.

Haruka still didn't understand exactly what she was being asked to do. She'd been with the Lunar Agency for several months now, and this was the first time the big boss had called her in. Sure she'd been excited when he mentioned that she would be getting put on a special assignment, but after sitting through the explanation for a good fifteen minutes she was just left scratching her head. She had agreed to it, since saying no just didn't really feel like an option at the time, but still... this didn't seem like the sort of thing you left to the rookie.
"...Either he knows something I don't ,or I just got signed on as the most over-payed baby sitter." She muttered to herself after leaving the office. The young woman was dressed in her usual hero attire, with thick red overalls pulled over a sleeveless white top, and her jacket tied loosely around the waist. Her white hair had been trimmed down recently, so the strips of red from her plumage were slightly more visible, but it still needed to be tied back so that it didn't get in the way. She moved slowly as she wandered down the hallway , something that was incredibly rare for the usually impatient girl, but she was trying to put it off as much as possible while he mind kept on processing her task like it was some sort of puzzle.
But she hated puzzles. Just sitting there and thinking wouldn't ever actually accomplish anything; you had to dive in and start experimenting eventually. And so after a second of consideration that's what she did; putting this off wouldn't do anyone any good, so she took a breath, mentally told herself to get the hell over it, and strode through the door to the waiting room.
There was only one person inside; a small blonde girl with big fluffy ears and a tail. Haruka had seen her about a few times and heard a thing or two about her from Blue Weaver, but they'd never actually met formally. Her talons clicked softly on the floor as she approached the girl, taking the opportunity to look her down more thoroughly. "You're Feral, right?" She asked as she stopped in front of her with folded arms, a gesture that was just a bit more awkward when your arms were also wings. "I'm Haruka, but I guess you can call me Cinder if you prefer. Not gonna lie, you probably know just as much about this whole thing as I do, but I guess the Judge says you're going to be hanging out with me today." She paused for just a second as she glanced around at the dreary interior of the room. "That being said, if we're going to be talking, we might as well do it somewhere with a bit more fresh air." She personally hated being stuck inside the agency office, and from a glance she could guess that Feral probably had some pretty similar opinions about the place, so she promptly turned for the exit and waved for the girl to follow "C'mon, we're going on a patrol."

Feet still swinging, Feral’s ears swivelled to attention well before someone entered the waiting room from the back end of the agency. The footsteps didn’t belong to anyone she knew well, but the bright-and-pale figure that emerged wasn’t entirely unfamiliar. Someone recent, but not someone she’d talked to. New hero? Sidekick, anyway. Feral generally didn’t have attention to spare for them. Was this the person she was waiting for? Hard to say, even if the feather-armed girl in overalls was looking directly at her, at least until she spoke and crossed her bird arms at her. Could she fly?
Cinder. Easier to say and remember than Haruka. Feral nodded, to confirm that she was indeed Feral, and slid from the chair to rise smoothly to her (urk) booted feet. ”It’s nice to meet you, Cinder,” she said, carefully formal as she shook out her tail to compensate for the time spent with it stuck through the back of a chair. ”I don’t... know much about this. Blue Weaver - she said I was supposed to...” She trailed off a bit, struggling to explain something she didn’t really know while still remaining polite and formal, but brightened obviously when Cinder suggested they go outside. Outside was much better, as long as she wasn’t cold or wet. But that would not be the case today. The weather was much too nice, and besides, she knew she’d be able to warm up again afterwards even if something did happen. That reliability did wonders for the mood.
”I’ve been on patrols with Blue Weaver before,” she offered hesitantly once they were outside, her amber eyes quickly adjusting to the sunlight leaning comfortably on her skin and fur. ”Not recently, though.” She had been much too busy with school. UA asked and expected a lot of its students, and she had extra work on top of that. But she’d mostly been keeping up on it all lately. True, she had more to do, as usual, once she finished with this thing today, but that was something to worry about later. For now, she was out in the streets, warm and fed and dry, not with her pack but with the knowledge that they were safe and well, and as such she moved smoothly, alert but calm and content, and only a little bit like she’d happily break into a run on the next step, simply for being outside and on the move.

Even in the few words that Feral gave during their introduction, Haruka could already see that the girl was struggling a bit to maintain some semblance of polite formality. A commendable effort, really, but being who she was, the rookie hero responded with the exact opposite sort of demeanor: blunt and frank. "Yep, like I said; you know exactly as much as I do. Also, you don't have to get all stiff with me Ferie." She called over her shoulder as she reached the front door. She could understand the reasons why Feral was acting as she did, but the mask that the girl was trying to put on was one that obviously didn't fit her. "All that flowery crap is nice and all, but it's fake. I want you to speak your mind, be yourself."
Stepping outside, Haruka was immediately greeted by a cloudless blue sky, which offered an immediate and drastic improvement to her mood after being stuck in the office for most of the day. As she gave a stretch, a strong sun beamed down on the streets of Tokyo and the light made her already striking feathers practically shimmer with every move she made. Yes, with a day like this it was certainly no time to be cooped up inside. It was an opinion that apparently many people shared, since even in the middle of a work day the streets were fairly crowded with people enjoying the excellent weather. That always had the opportunity to make things a bit more interesting on patrol, but not enough to actually make the bird girl worry about it, and after a second of soaking in the pleasant warmth of the sun, she picked a direction and started walking.
"So you've already got a bit of an idea of what you're looking for then? Good, saves me a bit of explainin'." Haruka responded to the girl with a smirk as she waded effortlessly into the masses of people even as she drew looks from the passersby. The gentle aura of heat that she radiated even without actively running her quirk tended to make the average person give her a wide berth when passing by, isolating the pair in a bubble several feet across that few crossed unless they had to. "I'd hope you're not wasting time on stuff like this now days though, get's busy as hell at UA around this time of year. I actually only graduated from the place about half a year ago, so I know what you're going through." She chatted idly as they made their way to the first corner and turned down a slightly less populated street. "If you don't mind me asking, why'd you decide to sign up anyway? " Haruka had heard a little about Feral from Lunar Judge and Blue Weaver when she first joined the agency, not exactly normal to have a Hero organization looking after a kid like that after all, but she still didn't know all that much about the girl outside the basics of her circumstances. Part of her 'assignment' was to fill in some of the gaps.

Cinder’s irreverence was at both welcome and utterly confusing. If it was slang she knew, she was fine. If it wasn’t.... or if it was followed up by something completely out of context Fairy? Was Cinder calling her....
Oh.
Feral. Ferie. Was that also a way to spell Fairy? Fairy had too many As and Is; it was too much like Akiko, even if it didn’t have any Ks.
This train of thought sustained her until she was outside and the warm sunlight sank into her hair and fur and skin, even as her ears soaked in the noise of the street. Voices and footsteps and engines and bike chains and hanging signs shifting in the faint wind. Nothing concerning or too loud for comfort. She darted after Cinder, a half step behind once the pro hero actually started moving. The older girl’s hero suit rustled a little differently than most fabrics, especially where the legs brushed against each other on each stride. Staying too close was... toasty, like she’d fallen asleep in full summer sun, but in such light clothing it would be a while before she overheated. Besides, it made Cinder’s fieryness even more obvious, as well as clearing a path for them to move in the crowd. That was a little bit disappointing. Feral rather enjoyed darting through swarming masses of people, especially with a moment to stretch her joints into a more predatory agility.
Should she do that now? She couldn’t maintain it forever, though, not without sacrificing something else... and it would be dumb to deafen herself. It didn’t take too long to make the change, but it wasn’t instantaneous, if something were to happen...
Through all of this, one of her ears roamed about, constantly changing angles to pick up on and filter in any concerning sounds, and the other stayed more or less trained on Cinder... although Feral was busy enough in her head that she wasn’t quite completely following every word. Most of it came across as not new information that was in statements and did not imply that she had to answer with more than the occasional nod. When they turned down a quieter street, though, an actual question flew out and interrupted Feral’s musings on whether it was better to be proactive or patient.
”Sign up? With the Lunar Agency or UA?” The answers were slightly different. Cinder probably wanted both, and it wasn’t like Feral really hid it, especially from people who actually worked at the Lunar Agency and would end up knowing anyway, if they didn’t already. ”The agency was first. Blue Weaver. Got my pack off the street, and then it turned out that Lunar Judge knew one of my dads. Worked with him. Something like that.” Old details that didn’t apply to much these days, and still had a few shreds of memory that were especially unhelpful. ”They helped me get into UA because of that. Keep helping.”
She paused, keeping her feet in place to stop the annoying boots from adding noise. She had heard... something. Faint and far, not at all clear, and she couldn’t tell what it had been. Her ears shifted slightly, and then she softly exhaled and moved forward again. She trusted that she had heard something, but it wasn’t overtly threatening and they were moving in the right direction anyway. If it came again, her ears were ready.

Haruka nodded as Feral went about explaining how she'd come to be a part of the lunar agency, glancing at the girl through the corner of her eye even as she continued to make her way down the street. All of that had basically matched up with what Weaver had told her about the girl's situation, though the bit about the Judge's connection was new information. Honestly, it was always hard to get a solid read on the guy, and it was basically impossible to tell what was going on in his head. At least for her anyway, but even still she couldn't really complain. He'd given her a shot after all, even with the bit of bad publicity she'd gotten back in school that had stopped most other agencies from taking an interest in her. She owed him for that, so dealing with a bit of cryptic nonsense every now and then was a small price to pay.
"Alright, but why'd you decide to go the UA in the first place? Not exactly the sort of place that you get into on a passing fancy. Trust me Ferie, that reason of yours is going to be imp-" Haruka trailed off as she noticed that Feral had fallen behind, standing still about ten feet back. The rookie hero glanced briefly to see what was up, but immediately turned back around after noticing what she was doing, her crimson eyes focusing as she began to scan up and down the street. Feral's eyes had been unfocused and her ears were visibly twitching, and Haruka had met enough people with beast mutations to recognize what that sort of reaction meant. She may not have had the same sort of edge that they did when it came to hearing, but her eyes were as keen as any hawk's when it came to hunting. In an instant the air around the pair had become tense as she swept back and forth over the people on the street for any signs of suspicious movement.... But there wasn't anything to see, and the moment passed with Feral once again moving to catch up. Haruka let out a sigh of her own and her muscles untensed as her eyes softened back to their normal state.
"Now that's a good way to get the blood pumping... What did you hear anyway?" Haruka asked, shifting to start walking forward again as the animalistic girl plodded over. From the reaction she assumed that it had been nothing... or at least that what she was hoping. She certainly hadn't been expecting anything exciting to happen during this little excursion, it was just supposed to be a short walk with a bit of conversation on a pleasant day... but since when did her expectations ever stop fate from having a laugh at her expense?

As she continued moving, quickly catching up though her own steps were a little bit softer, Feral considered Cinder’s reaction. Quick, and not panicked, but maybe reliant on sight. That was fair. She didn’t have big ears like Feral. Did birds even have good hearing? How bird was she?
Anyway. That was unimportant right now. ”Not sure what I heard, too faint. We’re in the right direction.” She probably shouldn’t come across as too confident, though, to an actual graduated pro hero. ”Might be nothing.” Even if she trusted her gut and her senses, and some of that probably seeped into her words. Of course, if someone else were listening in, and they thought that they’d escaped serious notice, they’d be more likely to make another mistake and start moving again. She shrugged her narrow shoulders, hoodie bobbing, hands still in its front pocket. Cinder had asked something just before. Continuing the conversation would help mask their attentiveness. Right, the question about her reason for going to UA.
”I want streets to be safer. People who don’t have much are just as vulnerable to villains, and more likely to be mistaken for them, or punished for trying to protect what they do have.” They approached another intersection, and Feral casually scanned the different directions. Her ears lingered to the left as she looked back to Cinder. ”Which way next?”
There it was again! A lower noise, grumbly-growly, not very loud at all. Scuffling too. There was something very..... odd about it all. She tried to lean toward the left road, smaller and narrower and even less busy than the one they were on now, hoping that Cinder would get the hint without making it so obvious that someone else watching would get suspicious.

Haruka offered Feral a nod as they stepped back into pace and continued down the street. Despite any attempts to downplay the brief interruption by the girl, she couldn't help but keep her eyes open now. She had always been the type of person to follow her gut and instincts over logic, so she tended to trust that sort of thing from others as well. Not to mention these beast types always seemed to be right about stuff like this for some reason, it was almost unfair.
Regardless, they continued forward and the conversation picked up right where it left off. Feral's response earned her another nod from Haruka, who mulled it over briefly in her head. The basic response was a pretty normal one for a lot of the people she went to school with; make the streets safer, make the world a better place, etc. Though the specific reasoning she gave was fairly interesting. More of a social reform sort of approach, which was a bit rarer. Maybe she had someone specific in mind when she talked about people getting labeled as villains? Haruka mused but didn't ask, instead picking up where she herself had left off. "That's as a good a reason as any, as long as you feel strongly about it anyway. It's pretty important to have something like that to fall back on, something to push you when your back's against the wall. A... Reason to keep going I guess?" She scratched her head as she did her best to repeat the lesson that she'd been taught early on, not quite convinced that she managed to capture the same gravity with the statement that her teacher had had.
She shrugged as they came to the next intersection and turned to look up and down the street as Feral asked about where they were heading. It took a second, but as she was about to answer she caught sight of the movement of the girl's ears again and nodded. To the left it was. "Down this way, I think. There's a park a few blocks down that I patrol through pretty often." Haruka explained as she turned and moved to cross the intersection. What else was this way? She tried to remember as her eyes kept scanning ahead. Before the entrance to the park, the street opened up into a small marketplace, but besides that there were also a number of small shops and convenience stores lining the sides... a combination that left the streets fairly crowded most days, and today was no exception. Again, Haruka didn't see anything immediately, but if there really was something that Feral was tracking, there were certainly plenty of places here for it to hide.
