All day. ALL DAY. Basically forever.
There had been a smell. It was not a familiar smell, and Crow was familiar with a wide variety of smells.
It was definitely furry, And it wasn’t cat, or dog, or rodent. It didn’t quite smell wild either. It was very... clean.
It was infuriating. And tempting. And Feral was paying far too much attention to him for him to go investigate it. She was doing something with ink and paper, boring human things, and frustrated enough by it that she kept looking directly at him but not even giving him anything to do! Except for the odd crumple-up ball of ink stained paper to bat around. Boring. Lifeless. Plus it tasted bad.
No, he wanted to go find out what that smell was.
Was this it? Was this the moment? She was getting up. She was out of the chair. She was crossing the room to the box full of cold. She took out something that wasn’t cat food and he didn’t care about. She went over to the closed balcony door, and stood next to it while she opened the thing he didn’t care about. She drank, slowly, looking out at the world he wasn’t currently allowed to claim. And then...
Would she do it? Would she?!
She did! She opened the balcony door, sliding it open more than enough for him to hop out into the lowering sun! So he did, completely casually and not at all like he had been pretending to not want this exact opportunity forever and ever. She looked down at him, eyebrows raised in undeserved suspicion, so he stretched out every single muscle and joint he could, including every curve of his spine, taking as much time as he could. Feral eventually shook her head, muttered something about him staying on the balcony for once, and went back inside. Crow remained where he was, sprawled in the warm light, until a bird in a nearby tree returned to taunting him with its twittering. He chattered at it, reaching his front paws for the top of the railing but not bothering to jump. Birds were delicious but not the smell that he wanted to track down. No, the smell was stronger from out here, but it was wafting... from that side!
Now Crow leapt onto the railing, taking a moment to balance and then casually sharpen his claws against the edge in case Feral was looking. She didn’t tell him off, at any rate. From there, it was an easy enough hop to the next balcony over. Here, the scent was much richer. Rich and curious and foreign and exciting. The balcony was empty, the open door a welcoming portal of billowing curtain. He eased down from the railing, sauntering over to the door on quiet paws. His head popped around the corner, almost pressed against the bottom sill. A room much like Feral’s and his and the pack’s, or like that fish-person he’d discovered. Stuff he didn’t care about, all coated with the scent of a stranger. This stranger was.... not quite the curious smell that had drawn him soaring between the narrow planks above the distant ground. Where....
There! A wire contraption, absolutely redolent with the incredible smell. He stole up to it, stealthy as a shadow in a midnight storm, and tapped the contraption with a paw. It did not react, but what was that inside? He couldn’t see properly, but there was an easy fix to that. He hopped on top of the strange smell-shielding thing at the same time that Feral’s extremely annoyed shout echoed through both his collar and the open balcony door.

It had been a long day of unpacking and settling in. While Hanako hadn't brought much (only what she could carry in a suitcase, duffel bag, and backpack), it still seemed like she had an endless amount of stuff to unpack and organize; various knicknacks and small things that she had arranged and re-arranged at least a dozen times ... maybe more. Her scampering about was only broken around midday, when the courier service that she had paid an exorbitant amount to save Yuki she stress of travelling arrived finally arrived with their precious cargo. Of course, the white rabbit seemed relatively unphased by the whole ordeal, though Hana still felt better having her transported directly here than having to have dragged the poor animal through the several trains and stops she'd had to take to get to UA.
Glancing over once again at the drowsy puffball, Hana smiled, watching the rabbit's hide rise and fall slowly and rhythmically with sleep. The night was steadily approaching, and Hanako realized she'd had little to eat all day. With a frown, she got up to rummage through her backpack, something that clearly displeased Yuki, judging by the rattling coming from her cage. After fishing out a granola bar that had remained uneaten during her travels, Hana turned and had started unwrapping the bar when a loud shout near Yuki's cage caught her attention, echoed by a fainter one outside her window. "What ... ?" she mumbled, turning to look for the source before--
"Oh my god ..." the girl squeaked (not for the first time today, either). Before her, perched atop poor Yuki's cage ... was a CAT. The feline seemed fairly preoccupied with peering at Yuki, but Hanako couldn't contain the shriek slowly building in her throat. If not for fear for her own pet's safety, she may have bolted out the door by now. Instead, she slowly navigated around the room, keeping a wide distance from the predatory pest. "N-No. Bad ... bad kitty. G-Get away from Yu-Yuki," she croaked, barely managing to force the words from her throat. Her eyes desperately darted around the room for some kind of stick or something she could use to prod the beast away from her rabbit. Alas, there didn't seem to be any such tool, and the girl was locked in a stalemate, staring the cat down from across the room.

Between Feral’s shout and the extremely unexpected shriek from in the very same room, poor Crow would have hit the ceiling if it were any lower! Well, substantially lower, but he still flew into the air in utter fright. He managed to angle his descent enough to land on the floor rather than the cage, tail easily triple its previous size, and frantically looked around with wide eyes. He hadn’t been paying attention to anything but the smell on the way in, and now he was surrounded by things and he just wanted out of this situation -
There! The balcony door was still open!
Crow gathered his wits and his muscles and bounded through the room, looping through perceived obstacles rather than beelining for the exit. Once he was lined up, though, he picked up speed and bolted
Into a crouched figure that had not been there the last time he looked, with outstretched hands too-cannily placed for him to stop or turn or dodge or leap above. The lean figure held him firmly and infuriatingly calmly until he let his ears and tail droop, and then scooped him up more comfortably and tucked him against her (androgynous) chest,
Feral straightened, loose on the balls of her bare feet with the sulking cat in her arms. Even with the fluffy black cat, her black tank neither confirmed nor denied anything about her slender figure, and the thighs of her equally dark leggings were streaked with blonde hair that matched the tail that had been waving in the air until she caught sight of the figure within the room. She froze then, though less in terror than Crow had and more in sudden wariness, oversized triangular ears locked onto the stranger in front of her. She swallowed, at a profound loss for words.
Crow was in so much trouble.

At the sound of her unintentional shriek, the cat suddenly leapt into the air, earning another squeak from the terrified girl. Hanako watched as it practically tripled in size, turned, and bolted for her open balcony door, where Hana assumed the beast had gotten in. Instead of leaping out the door into the slowly-chilling dusk air, however, the cat was caught by someone.
The stranger perched atop her balcony was hunched over, clad in a dark tank and leggings, both covered in pale-bold fur. Fur that, Hana assumed, came from the absolutely massive ears and tail the stranger bore.
Hanako's heart dropped to the pit of her stomach. She knew that the students of UA's hero course would all have quirks, and it wasn't unlikely that at least one of them would have some type of quirk based on a predatory animal, but ... she hadn't expected to meet one so soon. Especially not as night was starting to fall. In her bedroom. Her wide, brown eyes scrambled across the stranger's figure, trying to determine exactly what type of animal this person got their quirk from.
'Foxes? No, fur's not red enough. Cyote? Maybe, but the tail looks odd. Wolf?'
Her mind continued to race, unbidden, as she felt her breathing grow quicker than one would technically consider to be safe. Hyperventilating. She knew she needed to calm down, that things were likely to turn out fine and everything would be okay as long as she figured out how to breathe and talk to this stranger who was definitely not going to harm her, but ... somehow, she found control nearly impossible. "H--" she tried to squeak out a greeting, but the sound came out strained, and trailed off before the "i" could be added.

As Feral stared at the... person across the room, the silence stretched on. Not complete silence, of course. Even without her ears, Feral imagined the probable-student’s breathing would be audible (with such floppy ears, how well could the strange, soft-looking, probably-female person hear? Soft from the fur, probably female from the clothing choices because most humans were consistent about that). With them, and with them so very attentive on the uncertain situation, she could hear the other, smaller animal rustling and breathing. She even fancied she could hear the student’s nose working as she breathed faster than Feral suspected to be possible for something so large.
What was she? Feral felt like she ought to know, and it didn’t seem that she was especially dangerous, but as a human with a Quirk, assuming safety was stupid. Assuming that a student at UA, even another first year student, was safe would be even more stupid. Feral tried not to be stupid, especially when it came to safety, and Crow was with her. And Kai and Quick were next door.
Would this person be a danger to her pack, being so nearby? Walls weren’t necessarily barriers, and both she and Crow had proven the vulnerability of adjacent balconies mere moments before. She couldn’t just leave that sot of mystery. She needed to know more.
The mystery maybe-soft, maybe-threat person squeaked something. Feral tensed, but there wasn’t enough complexity to the sound for her to glean any meaning. Her fingertips curled into Crow’s fur. Should she make the first move? What was the risk? Worst case scenario, what was the immediate threat? They were far enough apart that she would have some warning if the stranger lunged. There were no obvious signs of weapons, allies, or activated Quirks. The immediate threat was moderately low. She wasn’t trying to catch this person or anything, so if she triggered a lunge away that was fine.
But what if it turned into an issue with the school? Belatedly, Feral vaguely remembered something about how the school, and human society in general, had rules and laws about artificial territory. And consequences other than a scuffle for trespassing. She couldn’t think about that right now. It would just make her more stressed and she probably wouldn’t be able to remember it anyway.
She swallowed. The real risk wasn’t any immediate threat, or danger directly to her pack. She could handle that. She could fight. But if the school got mad... how could she protect them against that? Against what would happen next? The hair along the back of her neck, as well as the fur on her ears and tail, stiffened with worry. What did people do when they’d done something that other people might think was wrong, to keep from those people acting badly against them in response?
Feral shivered and bit her lip, unintentionally with a sharp tooth. With a dash of metal in her mouth, she abruptly tried to bow over Crow, while trying to contain his renewed protests (halfhearted at best), and maybe trying to maybe make him bow too, and half-whispered, half-shouted at the ground: ”Sorry!”

Silence. And staring. Hanako and the stranger stood across the room from each other, both with similarly shocked expressions. The sound of blood roaring through her ears drowned out anything else Hana might have been able to hear. What was the stranger thinking? Why weren't they moving? Did they think she was a ghost? After all, this room had been vacant for a long while before she was joined ... and it was the middle of the school year, kind of an odd time for a student to be joining. How long were the two going to stand like that? Should she run? Questions and worries and thoughts whirled around in her head at a dizzying pace until suddenly, she was able to smell ... was that ... blood? Hana's heart rate leapt again, and just before she was going to turn tail and run out the room, the stranger suddenly bowed and let out a hoarse, "Sorry!"
Hanako flinched unintentionally, then started to regain control of herself. 'That's right, breathe ... This is just another student ... I think. They wouldn't hurt you, especially for no reason ...' While the rabbit girl's heart rate remained steady at its increased rate, her breathing slowed, and she gave a nervous smile.
"U-Uh ... It's no p-problem ... uhm ..." She glanced around, letting her posture settle into more relaxed state (though still relatively guarded). "H-Hi. I'm Miruku, Hanako. I j-just moved here, ah ... t-today." Another awkward smile. "S-So ... who are you and, uh ... what are you doing on th-the balcony?" 'Not hunting me, I hope!'

The long-eared mystery student flinched, and Feral’s ears caught the movement even if the floor took up most of her visual field, and she nearly bolted herself. Her muscles were already tensed, so the sudden tension did very little, and she forced her feet to stay anchored to the ground like they had sunk into fresh concrete. Not to trap her, but to keep her from being dumb. Slowly, slowly, she flexed and then stretched out her toes and her feet, carefully shifting her weight to loosen her legs before anything cramped.
Hanako Miruku. A name. This person had a name. And she offered it. She wasn’t trying to hide anything or run off to report Crow’s bad behaviour. The apology had worked, at least so far. She just had to keep going like this. It would be okay. It would. She could make it be okay. ”I-“ Names. She wasn’t relaxed enough for this by far. Just thinking about names was bringing her tension right back up, even more than usual because if this Hanako did decide to report it, it would be even easier to bring all the consequences down on Feral if she knew her name. Except no, it wouldn’t make a difference, because the school knew about her and Hanako had seen her face, so she was very identifiable. She swallowed. ”I’m Feral. My name is. Um.”. A slow breath out. ”I, uh. I came to get Crow.”. She lifted the limp, flat-eared cat slightly. ”He jumped between the balconies. I’m sorry if he caused any trouble!”
The offending cat grumbled petulantly, coming through to Feral as had to find smell. Feral’s ears flicked, and her own nostrils flared, and she looked around the room until she caught sight of the cage. ”What do you have?” she asked, pure curiosity seeping into her voice.

The more she relaxed, the more Hanako came to realize the other student appeared to be just as nervous as her, perhaps moreso. Were they scared of her, too? Were they upset she was scared of them? She felt bad, but couldn't slow her racing heart. It was just in her nature. Even if she wasn't sure what animal they belonged to, those tall, angular ears were most assuredly predatory in nature, likely canine ... Gently pressing her teeth into her lip, she forced herself to wrench her eyes away from the stranger's ears to something else ... there, the shoulder will do. If she just kept focusing on the shoulder, maybe she could calm down a little.
"Feral. My name is. Um ..."
Hanako's shoulders unintentionally slouched a little. 'Ah ... their name is canine-sounding, too ...' she lamented internally. She hardly had time to dwell on the thought, though, as the cat in Feral's arms was presented to her limply, causing her to flinch yet again, but less so than before.
When the cat ... Crow growled, Hana had to clench her hands into fists and dig her claws in slightly, to ground her and keep her from bolting. Not wanting to upset Feral further, though, she gave them a nervous smile. "I-I'm not sure what you m-mean what do I have ... U-Unless you mean Yuki ... Th-That's what your--Crow was looking at earlier. She's a rabbit s-so uh ... she's like me, except she can raise her ears and I can't ... b-but I promise it's not weird or anything for me to have her as a pet! I just like rabbits as pets cuz you can let her out of a cage like a c-cat or dog, or keep her in the cage like a guinea pig or hamster, if I need to!" A flood of embarrassment washed over her, realizing that she just admitted to keeping a rabbit as a pet, something she was often teased for in primary school.
Hanako sat a moment with her head bowed, shuffling her feet nervously before she blinked in surprise. "W-Wait ... you said leapt across the balconies ... are you in the room next to me, then?"

A little part of Feral withered when Hanako slouched, as if disappointed, upon hearing Feral’s name. One of the few times she didn’t worry that a new person would judge her for it, not that she would ever willingly admit her concerns, and there it was. Disapproval. Dislike. If they understood, they wouldn’t... but why would they care to understand?
Lost in her head and her worries and her sinking emotions, Feral almost missed when Hanako continued to talk. With a small start, her attention flicked back up. Yuki? Crow had been looking at something or someone called Yuki?
A rabbit?
Feral had heard of rabbits. She had even seen cartoon pictures of them before: a convenience store in her old territory had had one on their sign. Wolfdad had used it back when he started teaching her about reading. Rabbit Moon Store. There was a picture of a rabbit sniffing a crescent moon, and it was a store. She still remembered it, all these years later. She had not, however, ever encountered a live rabbit. Ever. She had actually encountered more dragons than rabbits. So now she tilted her head, somewhere between confused and curious. Hanako’s description wasn’t making anything make any more sense either. Raise her ears? Weird to have her? This was somehow something worrying?
”I’ve never met a rabbit before.”. Feral’s tail waved hesitantly. ”Is it weird to have a rabbit in your pack?”. She spoke with an honest and open lack of understanding; she had a human in her pack, so how could a rabbit be strange? She tilted her head the other direction, then looked down at Crow. There you go. Rabbit. Satisfied now?”. She took a long moment to stare at the cat, and then, not entirely satisfied that he wouldn’t go right back into trouble, repositioned him in her arms, supporting him more comfortably for them both.
”Hm? Oh, er.” The need to protect herself and her pack from Crow’s dumb stunt warred with general honesty, and the pragmatic reality that she could hardly hide from a new neighbour forever, and getting caught in a lie would be as bad, if not worse, for their security. ”Yea- Yes. On, er, that side.”. She gestured with her chin, since her hands were busy with Crow. ”I, uh, I wouldn’t have come over that way if it weren’t for Crow. I don’t normally - other people’s - I don’t want to cause any trouble.”

Part of Hanako found it beyond belief that Feral had never seen a rabbit before, though ... maybe they just meant in real life? She was about to inquire further, when-- "Is it weird to have a rabbit in your pack?"
"P-Pack?" she stammered, off-put by the animalistic word ... not to mention ... canine connotations. "Uhm ..." She was cut off by Feral talking to her cat, and suddenly it made a bit more sense. Maybe this person truly was feral, and thought their pets were part of a pack ... sort of in the same sense as a family. It was a strange thought, to be sure, but ... not too strange ... probably.
For a moment, the stranger seemed to struggle rather intensely with her question as to where their room was, and it was then that it occurred to Hana that the stranger had to be female, at least physically, otherwise they wouldn't be located in the girls' tower of the dorm. That said, it may also mean they weren't comfortable with their gender, and admitting to being neighbors was something they struggled with for personal reasons. Her musings were interrupted, however, by the stranger once again sputtering apologies and reasoning for their behavior. Hana's heart fluttered a bit at the rapid-fire speaking, but it didn't terrify her the same way it had before. Part of her wanted to relax and trust this person (they seemed okay enough, if a bit weird), and the other part, instinctively, was against the idea. The thought struck her, however, that if the two were going to be dorm-neighbors, they ought to try to get along, regardless of their differences.
Hanako was momentarily at a loss for words. She wanted to help the stranger feel more at ease around her, but wasn't sure of the right way do so. "W-Well, it's all right. I know pets can be a bit of a handful ..." she chuckled quietly, eyeing the spot where Yuki's cage sat. "... and I did only move in t-today, so it's not like either of you knew better."
As she stared at the cage, Hanako debated with herself internally. Feral had said they'd never seen a rabbit before, right? Maybe ... they were curious then? And didn't know that rabbits were actually food? Maybe ... maybe she could show Feral Yuki ... as a sign of good faith.
'But what if they hurt her?' a part of her mind screamed. 'What if they eat her?'
With a frown, she shook her head slightly, a hardly-perceptible movement, but one enough to stop such a train of thought. No, she was going to make friends with her neighbor. Despite the overwhelming fear screaming at every hair on her being, Hanako gently dug her pointer claw into her thumb joint to keep herself grounded and mumbled, "Do ... do y-you want t-t-to see her? Yu-Yuki, I mean?"

Hanako’s confusion quickly reminded Feral that most people didn’t use the termpack, especially in relation to the members of their family. It wouldn’t stop her from using it, though, because that was what they were, but she had forgotten that it might confuse some other people. There was too much going on. She was too stressed out.
There didn’t seem to be any lingering reasons to be so stressed, though. Was there? Crow was under control, and not actively trying to misbehave more. No damage had been done. She was... kind of... conversing with Hanako, who was also stressed out, but was maybe calming down. No obvious signs that there was any impending doom or threat. Right?
So.
Deep breath in. Slow breath out. Process the idea of a rabbit, up until now a mythical creature of advertisements and artwork, getting into trouble. Deep breath in. Slow breath out. Now she felt more tired than stressed, as her muscles finally relaxed properly and realized how stiff they had been. The reduced stress even made it easier to take note of the little movements Hanako was making, the rabbit girl shaking her head and twisting her hand. Fighting fear?
...
...
...
Of her? Also:
See Yuki the rabbit that was not also a person, probably with a rabbit quirk, but was an actual animal rabbit?
Feral warred with processing the realization that Hanako was probably afraid of her and restraining the excitement at the thought of meeting such a rare and strange creature, the latter winning out until she took a half step forward and she remembered that her arms were full of cat. She paused. How should she make this work? She wanted to see the rabbit. She did not want to scare Hanako. Scared people could be dangerous, but also Feral only wanted bad people to be afraid of her. A neighbour here meant that Hanako was also a UA student and therefore trying to be a hero, which made her a not-bad person, a good person. At least partially. So Feral didn’t want her to be afraid of her. And she didn’t want Crow to make trouble for her.
Her ears shot up as a solution presented itself. ”Can I? If I keep Crow away. I can lock him in my room. Won’t take long. He needs a door open to get out, and he’s too sad to be curious now anyway. And I’ll make sure he doesn’t cause you any more trouble. He just hasn’t met a rabbit before either.”. Feral’s tail bounced now, guileless in its hopeful excitement.

Feral's excitement was all to apparent to Hanako, though it was clear the stranger before her also seemed slightly conflicted. Their face was a strange array of emotions that Hana wasn't all too sure of, though none of them seemed to be outwardly malicious. It wasn't until she suggested Feral meet Yuki that excitement seemed to win over, their tail waving about in an erratic manner.
At the suggestion of sending Crow away, Hanako felt herself slightly torn. She was terrified, yes, that much was certain. But ... if Crow had more intelligence than a regular cat ... Or if Feral could keep Crow from eating Yuki ... maybe it would be all right for them to meet? After all, Feral seemed to be able to communicate with Crow in a way that was beyond the normal reach of, say, a human telling a dog "no." Perhaps this could work ... Especially since Crow had already been near Yuki and she hadn't seemed too perturbed, as she still lay stretched out in her cage, watching Hana with half-lidded eyes.
"W-Well ... If he hasn't met a rabbit, either ... I suppose he can meet her, too. J-Just ... m-make sure he doesn't ... you know ..." she trailed off, feeling a hot wave of embarrassment and ... perhaps, shame. She knew it was unfair of her to feel this way automatically about predatory animals and quirks, kind of like an inherent racism. She was sure they were still good people... it just took some effort for Hana to calm down and remember that. Inwardly, she hoped that Feral didn't take it the wrong way. "S-Sorry, if uh ... that's rude of me to ask," she mumbled, unable to bring herself to look Feral in the eye.

It took a while for Hanako to answer, and Feral couldn’t tell just what the hesitation was from. Had she expected Feral to turn down the offer? Had it not been made in good faith? Was she regretting it now? Was it related to jumping the balconies? Feral did know that most people wouldn’t consider it, even if it wasn’t very far. Heck, it wasn’t even really necessary to jump unless you were Crow’s size. Crow had to jump. He was small. But springy.
But then Hanako spoke, and it wasn’t to turn anything down. It was to include Crow! Make sure he didn’t what?
Rabbit. Scared. Cat.
The thought that rabbits might be prey animals had not actually occurred to Feral. She’d been much too preoccupied with the newness and the stress of Crow putting everything at risk for the whole pack. Now that she slowed down, though, it made sense. She had no inclination to chew on either Hanako or Yuki, and Crow didn’t seem to either, but soft fuzzy things were generally at some degree of risk of other, bigger things wanting to chew on them. So. Probable situation was that Hanako was worried specifically about Crow trying to eat Yuki. Possibly about Feral trying to eat Yuki? But she hadn’t been hungry in ages, and even if she were interested in eating something out of a cage, she’d still have to cook it somehow. Or. Well. She’d survived eating raw meat before, and worse things, but her powers kind of kicked in in a way she didn’t really... enjoy.
”Why would it be rude?” she asked, crouching smoothly (but carefully not too quick, if she was also included in the maybe-might-bite assessment). ”Have to protect your pack. Getting hurt is bad enough, but even Crow isn’t dumb enough to attack something he’s been told not to. Except feet. It’s harder when he’s playing. But I won’t let him do that either!” She plopped the black cat on the balcony but kept a hand on the back of his head and neck, scritching gently. ”Only look, no touching. Yuki is a friend[/.”. She leaned into the words, though she had no particular power to actually make anyone or anything follow orders. ”Friend.”
Crow flicked his tail, but made no protest, so Feral scooped him up again and hesitantly, slowly, stepped into the other student’s dorm room with him.

It was unintentional, but Hanako let out a slight sigh of relief and quirked a half-smile. She was slightly wary of the sudden crouch, though it mostly seemed Feral was doing so in order to set Crow down, which was fair. She never really understood how people could just hold their animals, then expect them to get down on their own. She watched as Feral spoke to Crow, insisting that Yuki not be touched. The word friend left a funny feeling in her chest, though not an unwelcome one. It was fuzzy and tingly at the same time, like a combination of happiness and worry, but not quite excitement.
Doing her best to focus on the warm/happy side of things, Hanako smiled and knelt down next to Yuki's cage. "All right, then ..." she said, voice barely above a whisper. Carefully, she unlatched the wire holding the cage shut, and opened the wide, metal door. "Yuki, honey, come here, we have some friends to meet," she cooed. While the rabbit certainly wouldn't understand her, she still felt obliged to let the critter know what was going on.
Yuki looked slightly frustrated at having her nap disturbed, but didn't make any motion towards or away from Hanako's reaching hands. Slowly, the fluffball was scooped up and pulled out of her cage, looking very much like an extremely large, white pom-pom in Hana's arms. When she noticed the cat, her eyes became slightly more alert, ears perking up slightly, but again the rabbit made no move to get away or panic. She seemed contented and safe in her master's arms, and was more curious than anything else.
Smiling, Hanako looked up at Feral and said, "Well, uh ... F-Feral, this is Yuki. She's about five years old now."

Feral’s oversized ears caught Hanako’s quiet voice well enough that the lack of volume barely registered, and she slipped forward until she was almost, but not quite, within arm’s reach of Hanako and the rabbit cage. She watched the interaction with intent curiosity, ears twitching slightly as she tried to discern if Hanako could also communicate with her pack-rabbit. If they were both rabbits, then it made complete sense to Feral that they would be able to communicate, but she had also learned that most people could not communicate with animals, and certainly not in even limited words. But she kind of always hoped to encounter someone else who did, and so she had to assess this time.
Crow was not nearly so alert, though he had perked up as they re-approached the rabbit smell, and now his nose worked and his whiskers twitched from his secure space in Feral’s arms. When he saw the rabbit properly, his eyes widened, ears coming to attention, and he just staaaaaaaared.
Feral wasn’t much more subtle, although rather than going still her tail full-on wagged behind her where she crouched. It didn’t have quite enough force to knock her off balance, but it was a good thing that there was plenty of space behind her, or the visit might have been interrupted by injury after all. The rabbit was just so... so... fluffy. How could something so small be so fluffy? And those ears were so strange. The pictures of rabbits she’d seen before didn’t do any of it justice. Especially the fluffiness. Her fingers twitched in Crow’s silky fur, aching to feel the rabbit fur and compare it. She quickly looked up to Hanako’s face, eyes bright and innocently excited, then back to the rabbit, then back to Hanako. Her tail moved a bit faster. She glanced down at at Crow. Oh! Was this how people introduced their pack? Or at least how Hanako did it? She didn’t usually think about how old Crow was, or any of them. Numbers were a thing usually reserved for money and math classes.
”Yuki is very fluffy,” she agreed solemnly despite the tail still wagging behind her. ”Erm. Crow is. About.”. Wait, she could figure this out. Kai was a couple years old. Three summers? Three. And he was about as old now as Crow had been when Kai had joined the pack. So that would make him.... ”Six! They’re almost the same age!”. She paused, a new thought occurring. ”How old do rabbits get? If Crow were human he’d be... I think in his 20s? But he’s not exactly especially smart, so if it weren’t for pack he’d probably never have made it this long.”. Feral was only slightly intentional about the stretched-out description; longer sentences made it less likely that Crow would understand and take offence. She needn’t‘ve worried, though, because he was much too focused on Yuki.
Slowly, slowly, slowly, Feral lowered Crow to the floor, glancing up at Hanako so that she could reclaim the cat at the slightest sign of worry or disapproval. Crow behaved himself admirably, though, and only leaned forward a bit, nose working again with curiosity.
