The message had been short and simple, demanding that its recipients - Kyou and Hyou - meet its sender at the park, at some ungodly hour of the night. One of the sender’s goons had passed it on to a member of Kyou’s group, insisting that it was for his eyes, and his alone. Hyousuke’s was simply slipped into his bag - when and how, he wasn’t sure, but he’d certainly not been the one to put it there.
All that was strange enough on its own, and until he’d reached the end of it, Hyousuke had been considering investigating. But it was the single B that it’d been signed with that made him absolutely certain that he would be attending that meeting. The moment he’d seen it, he’d started to scramble for his phone, practically tearing his room apart to find where he’d left it. Then, the very second that he’d opened it, he texted Kyou. A message as short and as simple as the one that’d been delivered to him, but more out of a frantic need to let him know than anything else.
“Bertha wants to see us.” Was all he sent before waiting for a response. The thought did occur to him that it was a trap - she wasn’t stupid, as far as he could tell. And if Goliath’s willingness to sacrifice integrity for an advantage was anything to go by, he wouldn’t put it against her to make it seem like she just wanted to talk, but use the opportunity to spring a trap on the both of them. But why invite him, if that was the case? Sure, he was a hero course student, but he wasn’t even through his first year, and he couldn’t take his gear off school grounds without good reason. He wasn’t certain, but it seemed to him like she really did want to negotiate something.

Kyou had already gotten the message at five that morning. One of the people that was trailing possible suspects knew he had gotten caught and tried to bail. Only to be cornered and given the message. The red head had told the poor guy to rest up for the next couple days, and come back when they were going to meet again and discuss things. When Kyou had gotten the text, he sent one back. "I know. I'll be in a costume...just try not to ask questions about it." The teenager already had suspicions of foul play, and had a back up plan in the form of Asahi. He was going to be their trump card...seeing a bunch of their guys getting literally sliced up would send quite the message.
The homeless boy stayed in the shadows and on the roof, waiting for a signal or seeing something off. Kyou had his red demon mask that covered his head, his tight long-sleeved shirt and combat vest, both black, and dark gray combat pants and black combat boots. He also had on black gloves. His mask also had a voice modulator, disguising it. Kyou had waited to see Hyousuke walking. "Don't be shocked or pissy, please about this costume...and I use the moniker Akuma when in this, so please use it. I do have Asahi around, but he won't be barging in unless it's a trap. Shall we?"
Hopefully Hyousuke would just accept it for now and not ask questions about it yet. And would follow the guy in.

A costume. Hyousuke grit his teeth on reading it - Kyou had been hiding something from him. He supposed that it shouldn't really be a point he needed to worry about, given that they had more important matters to attend to than whatever skeletons they had in their respective closets, but he couldn't help but wonder what exactly it was that they were keeping from him. Nevertheless, he took a hoodie from his wardrobe, and started making preparations. He didn't know much about keeping a low profile, but he could at least go to the effort of wearing something dark and inconspicuous to hide himself.
The park Bertha had arranged the meeting at wasn't a particularly busy one, even during the day. The most traffic it got was from people passing through on their way to or from work - the rest of the time, it was just a dimly-let stretch of grass, with a poorly-maintained path cutting from one end to the other. Nothing particularly special, but that suited Hyousuke - and presumably Bertha - just fine. Before going in, he stood still, head down while he listened. He only offered a grunt and a quick nod by way of response. As much as he had to say to both Kyou and Bertha, they weren't there to settle old grudges.
Hyousuke stepped into the light of a flickering street lamp, the vending machine next to it casting a smaller, but still harsh, glow a little in front of it. The message had said to meet her there - but it was still a few moments before she stepped out of the shadows in front of him, flanked on both sides by two of her own men. "Don't mind them." Bertha stated flatly, arms crossed across her chest while she eyes her quarry up. "So long as we all play nice, they don't have to do nothing or say nothing."
Hyousuke had no shortage of questions, of course. While the two of them hadn't much of a history, she was still a Viper, and as far as he was concerned, she was just as much a target as Goliath. But that could be dealt with later. For the time being, he stood, fists clenched and eyes glaring. "Get to the point." He said, doing his best to at least sound composed - and failing spectacularly. "This isn't a social call." "You try to be polite... Fine, whatever, I ain't here to make friends either. So let's get down to it. I want you and your little friend in the mask to help me get the Vipers out of Musutafu."

Bertha told them not to mind the goons. Still, Kyou narrowed his eyes at them. Play nice? how contradictory...she already wasn't. He waited though, letting Hyousuke take the lead. So, she wanted the Vipers out of Musutafu. How quaint. "Says the lady that told us to come alone, then bring two of her goons with her. I might have let one of them slide, just to keep sides even, but this isn't a serious offer. Tell one of them to buzz off to the end of the trail or let me bring my one guy here, then I'll talk. Not here to make friends or not, there needs to be at least a foundation of trust that you're at least serious about this." If she refused either one, he was gone...or going aggressive...he was still deciding on which. But luckily, she didn't refuse.
When she sent one of them off to act as a lookout, he was fine. "Ok, now that that's out of the way, please elaborate? Suzuki-kun said you aren't too fond of little Goliath...but are you willing to betray him over this? And why ask Suzuki-kun to be here? What part does he play in this little incursion? Surely Goliath doesn't wants him back...does he? Or does he just want to make an example of a traitor?" He was probing for information. And if she can even be trusted, though that wasn't a good start so far. But if Hyousuke was willing to at least listen to her, maybe he shouldn't give the lass too much flak. After all, he wanted to listen to what she had to say as well.

Though Bertha wasn't keen on the idea of sending away her security - even just part of it - she didn't much fancy stalling negotiations much longer. It'd been difficult enough to get a hold of the two without getting Goliath or his loyalists suspicious. So, after just a moment's deliberation, she turned to one of her men. "Thermos. You're on lookout duty." He didn't speak in response, simply nodding and pacing down the trail to take his post, while Bertha herself turned back to face the other two, determined to get through the discussions now that they could get things underway.
"Long story short," She started, eyeing the two of them harshly while she spoke, "No, I'm not too fond of him. I'm not gonna get into it here, but he's not cut out for leading anything bigger than a book club. Him trying to expand despite all the signs saying that he shouldn't is all I need to know that he needs to be kicked out of the Vipers on his ass. As for blondie over here..." She turned towards Hyousuke, her steely gaze meeting his. "What about me?" He replied. He barely even tried to hide the venom in his voice - she was the enemy, after all. "He's not been afraid to kick out anyone for good before. I can't imagine someone like him'd come crawling back to offer me a place as the resident whipping boy again."
"Yeah, I was just getting to that, jackass." She sighed after realising she was getting herself distracted, and returned to explaining the situation. "You remember how he operates, don't you? How he draws in and keeps new members?" "Yeah, he offers 'outcasts and misfits a place to call home,' or something like that." "Right. See, it goes a bit deeper than that. He convinces you that you're useless, but that you've got a place with people just like you. Once he's got you, he makes sure you start thinking that if you're not part of his little club, you're nothing. You weren't nothing before, and you'll be all that plus a traitor if you step out of line."
She waited for a moment. She didn't think Hyousuke to be the brightest bulb in the pack, but even he had to be able to follow where she was going with it. "...Wait, but I ain't useless. I got into UA. I was in the Sports Festival, damn it!" "Exactly. You proved him wrong. Sure, most of his victims manage to get their life back together once they've been kicked out, but it's always small stuff. Things he can keep hidden, or twist to fit whatever truth he wants to tell people. You're the first one he's kicked out that's done something big - and that makes you a threat. He beat you until your face looked like mincemeat, and here you are at Japan's biggest hero school."
Hyousuke had to admit, it felt kind of good to be spiting Goliath. Knowing that the person who'd scarred him probably grew more resentful with every passing day... It wasn't quite eye for an eye, but it was still some sort of revenge, at least. "So, what, you want me to come in and give some big speech and make people rise up against him?" "Don't be stupid, convincing them to leave peacefully's gonna take time we don't have. You need to go in there and kick Goliath's ass. He's got this whole cult of personality built up around him - everyone thinks he's untouchable, and that he knows best. But if the living proof that he's wrong comes in and breaks both his body and his ideology..." "...The Vipers'll start turning against him."

She confirmed that she had no love for the Vipers' leader. And while Kyou smiled behind his mask, agreeing completely. He shouldn't lead anything. But the part with Hyousuke still needed explaining. They described an operation similar to his, as like Goliath, Kyou offered outcasts and misfits a place to call home. But unlike Kyou, Goliath seemed to torture them mentally. And the thought of having Hyousuke put Goliath in his place proved more appetizing to him. Though he still wasn't one hundred percent sure. "Hyousuke and I already semi-discussed having him put Goliath down. The most I could give him was to think on a strategy or way to get a definite advantage...something I'll have enough confidence in succeeding that I'll see what I can do to get a one on one confrontation with enough witnesses and no one interfering. It's a scenario that I'm certainly interested in more than before, but outright killing the bastard have its perks too...Vanish has a body count, and there's little that his quirk can't turn into scrap or hamburger. And it leaves a power vacuum that you could snag for yourself and leave Musutafu. Or does Hush have his own supporters and has enough of them to fill that vacuum?"
Internal fighting was another way to destroy a gang...that was what interested him in the other scenario. The fact that one of his own, his boyfriend in fact, had killed before was sure to shock the hero student. Let alone the extent to what Kyou would do. When he said he'd bathe the streets with Viper blood, it wasn't a metaphor.

The revelation that Vanish had a body count wasn’t something that shocked Bertha terribly. Violence was inevitable on the streets, and when push came to shove, sometimes killing was necessary. Her goon didn't seem to mind much either - in fact, he seemed more concerned with glancing about the area, making certain that they hadn't been tailed, or that some unfortunate passerby wouldn't need to be dealt with. “Believe me, I intend to use that vacuum. The faster we get our efforts focussed back on Tokyo, the better. As for Hush, he’s a merc. So long as I can convince him he’s better off working for me, you don’t have nothing to worry about. Not that I’d complain about you putting that creep six feet under anyway. Gives everyone the willies...”
Hyousuke, on the other hand, was far from composed. He'd said that he'd try to keep calm during the meeting, and retain as much composure as he could, but knowing that he was working so closely with killers... He couldn't stop his emotions getting the better of him.
"I’m sorry, are we just gonna ignore that you’re all talking about killing someone in cold blood?! There was genuine anger in his voice, and though his face was hidden by the shadow of his hood, there was no mistaking the fire in those emerald eyes. The knowledge that they'd taken lives, and could speak so freely about it - that they could speak about killing Goliath outright as easily as they might talk about the weather - it instilled a sickness in him that he hadn't the words for. "You... I'll-" "Enough, Suzuki."
Bertha was no doubt the more composed of the two, but even she had trouble containing her annoyance at him. She wasn't sure if he was stupid, idealistic, or both, but it was getting on her nerves. "Shut it. This ain't some training exercise at your little group hug facility. This is our operation, and like it or not, you're gonna have to work with is, and play by our rules. So I'm telling you - leave the moralising until after you've knocked our mutual friend's teeth out across the floor, or stay out of our way. Got it?"
He understood what she was saying. But his stance left her wondering if he was going to take it to heart. His fists were clenched, and twitching upwards into a guard. His feet were shifting and shuffling, like he was getting ready to lunge. But that look in his eyes... That was perhaps the most telling thing of all. That wild, furious glare, boring deep into her with savage hated - it was unfiltered rage. Unfocussed, but no less powerful. A wildfire, contained within a person. For a tense few moments, the two stood there, each wondering if that fire would be allowed to burn... Until eventually, he relaxed his stance as much as he could, and let out a deep breath between clenched teeth.
"Got it." Relieved as she was, Bertha didn't dare dwell on the subject. They had more pressing matters to see to than his indignation at being forced to work with the enemy. "I can get an audience for you, no problem. As much as he fears Suzuki, Goliath still thinks he's better than him. He'll no doubt want to make an example of the 'traitor.' Show everyone in the Vipers that there is no future outside of the group, no matter how hard you struggle. Thing is, he's got every right to think big of himself. He's strong, he's tough, and he's smart. His Quirk's dangerous."
Hyousuke flinched at the mention of it. He was familiar with the Quirk, of course - being slammed into the floor of one of the gang's hideouts had given him as much experience as he thought he needed. "So what do you expect me to do about it?" "Simple. You've already got the answer." He stared at her, clearly unsure of what she meant, though unwilling to state it. "Christ, do they teach you anything at that school? Look - you've fought big guys before, haven't you? Or ones with big, flashy Quirks that'll level a city block or whatever." "Yeah, plenty of times. Why?" "What's the one thing they all got in common? All those macho heavyweights, all the heroes firing off big attacks to finish off the fight in the first round?"
He thought. He played back his fights in his mind, and the ones he'd watched. All that power and all that durability was overwhelming, and seemed unstoppable at first. But the more he thought about it, the more it began to dawn on him. There was a weakness they all seemed to share. "Stamina." "See, now you're getting it. The more muscle mass needs moving, or the bigger the attack, the more energy they need to keep going. Goliath's large without his Quirk, and with his muscles getting denser, he can crack your skull open by sneezing at you. But a certain someone's not been keeping up with his cardio."

She didn't really answer his question. "But why go through with Suzuki-kun shattering that image instead of the other way? I mean, it's funner sure but..." Then Hyousuke chimed in, apparently upset about the whole killing part. Rolling his eyes, he added some additional little tidbits. "Is it really in cold blood when your father slits your throat and tore your fingernails off multiple times and generally abusing you? Is it really in cold blood when your boss makes you feel worthless and useless, and flexes his power by scarring you or your comrades in fits of verbal, emotional, and physical abuse? Sometimes you gotta do what you gotta do to survive. And that's forgetting that heroes sometimes kill too. Not often, but you dig, you see it, both justified and not so justified." He probably could have some better words there, but he was tired and really didn't want to deal with heroic BS.
So he was in full agreement. He can either play by their rules, or get out of their way. The blond relented, and Bertha said an audience was no problem. While Kyou already kind of theorized that stamina was Goliath's Achilles's heel, and was planning on fighting power with power, it took a bit for Hyousuke to figure that out. "That's not always the case, but it's certainly a good start. Besides my earlier question, I do want payback for dragging us into this. I was already laying low after being attacked by UA students, and I already was in the middle of reorganizing and all, but this severely pisses me off. If he gives everyone the willies, give me Hush to play with and some of Goliath's loyalists. Then after the deed is done, I'll let you and the rest of the Vipers piss off without a scratch."
Hopefully she'd be fine with that, since Hush apparently wasn't very popular, and she'd said she wouldn't mind that much if he was taken out of the picture.

Hyousuke glared towards Kyou while he spoke. He had so, so many things to say, so many emotions to express - chief among them rage - but Bertha kept him in line. That withering stare she affixed him with, the knowledge that it was neither the time nor the place... He kept his mouth shut, though not without reluctance. He would speak of it later. When all had been seen to, and the dust had settled, he would see to it that they had words. But, until then, he would have to listen to the two of them, speaking whenever he was spoken to. Like a mongrel.
Bertha, annoyed though she was by how things had started turning out with the blonde there, still managed to keep her composure. "To answer your question about using the hero for this, it's to make sure that he'll never rise to power again. We kill him now, and he dies a martyr. The Vipers aren't united by an ideal, they're united by him. You kill him off, they'll just unite to take revenge on your people. Whether you could win that war or not doesn't matter - I think we'd both agree that we'd rather see this through without losing any more of our people than we have to. If we disgrace him, and shatter the image he's built, then it breaks their faith in him - or at the very least, makes it easier for me to do it."
The proposal put forth regarding Hush and some loyalists had Hyousuke look as if he was about to start snarling. That seething anger, boiling just below the surface, threatened to spew from him like fire. Like an eruption, burning all in its path. They way they were speaking so casually about trading lives, talking about handing people over like cattle... Was this truly the price of revenge? Was vengeance worth sacrificing the lives of people that were just brainwashed? Hush had dug his own grave - Hyousuke didn't care much what happened to him. But the rest of those people had him on edge.
Bertha didn't seem too pleased by it either, but she was cold. Ruthless. A woman focussed on her objective, willing to sacrifice anything to reach it. "So long as you keep your word and let me and my people go, I'll have them delivered right to you. It'd bad for morale if I dragged them into your territory myself, I'm sure you under-" "I don't." "Well that's a damn shame, but nobody asked you, Battery Boy." "You're just handing over people?! Just like this?" He at least had the good sense to keep from shouting - but there was genuine hatred in his hissing. “You said it yourself, Goliath manipulates people! They can change, they’re-” “An acceptable loss.”
Bertha strode closer to him, that cold glare growing more intense with every passing second. “Look, I get that you hero types are bleeding hearts that can’t stand not saving everyone, but getting them help would take time, resources, and knowledge we don’t have. And what if they can’t be helped? What if they start working against us? They’re dead weight. They’re die-hard fanatics, Suzuki. If he wasn’t taking care of them, they’d be having accidents either way. So let me make myself perfectly clear. People WILL die before this is over, because Goliath’s too full of himself to see that he’s marching us all to Hell. So the way I see it, you can either get lost and let the big boys handle things, or you can take the opportunity to get what justice you can.”
She was right, of course. He couldn't stop them. Even if he went to the authorities, there was no guarantee they'd be able to do much, if anything - not to mention how they'd treat him, given his involvement in it all. It was begrudging, but he relented. He was still fuming and stayed deathly silent, but he accepted it. If that was the reality of the situation, he could at least be the one to take Goliath out. "Good. Now, if there's now more interruptions, let's talk strategy. I can say for sure Goliath's biggest weakness is gonna be his stamina, the guy doesn't get his hands dirty if he can help it, and he'll always try to finish a fight before he even starts to look tired. You ask me, an old-fashioned rope-a-dope's your best bet. Get him angry, get him making mistakes. This whole situation's already got him on edge, so if you're gonna try and get under his skin, now'd be the time."

Smiling behind the mask, Kyou couldn't help but agree. "Agreed on both fronts. I'm not afraid of fighting or of bloodshed, but killing ideologies and making sure a fight is done without ensuring a future one are things I can get behind. I'm confident I'll win a war, but if I can spare my own of one, I'll do it. I think I can like you one of these days...enough for a potential offer of alliance down the road." It was nice having someone on the same level. She agreed to the offer and would have said more if Hyousuke hadn't again interrupted.
This time, he stepped up, to the side, and between them. He was ready to stop a fight if he had to. Luckily, Bertha maintained her composure to an extent, he could still see the cold glare. "Maybe, maybe not. I might still be a little on the soft side, but I do prefer less lethal methods, but usually my lessons are learned. Cross me and people tend to regret it. Hush likely won't be able to get back to being a merc after I'm done with him...and the others won't want to mess with us again." He simply wanted to know why go with this route instead of the other. It made sense to him, and he agreed with it. But hopefully mentioning his tendencies will calm Hyousuke down a bit. That doesn't mean he won't maim Hush a bit though.
Then Bertha went into strategy. "How will an appearance with a beaten Hush and some of his supporters affect him? He doesn't seem like the type to care much if his underlings get hurt badly or worse, but just want to make sure. Plus, making it evident that after dealing with Suzuki-kun, he'd have to deal with us may also speed things along with him making mistakes...but that's up to you guys...you know him better than I do." It could make Goliath be more passive to conserve strength and make it a true fight of attrition to which the blond would definitely win, or make the egotistical son of a bitch rush and make more mistakes. "Either way, sounds like you need a fighting style shift...I know some good places to train in if you're interested, plus give you time to ask your questions about me if you have them. Two more days is what I gave the Vipers, any chance we can make that happen? Preferably the audience after Hush is sent out?" He looked at Hyousuke, trying to see if what he and Bertha said were getting to him.

“An alliance? Tempting, but let’s leave that kind of talk until after we’re not supposed to be at each other’s throats. I don’t think our people’re going to be too happy about getting buddy-buddy with each other for a while.” Bertha did seem like she’d genuinely considered the option, but ultimately, hadn’t any interest in it. Not at that point in time, anyway. Hyousuke was calmed, but only just enough to keep himself quiet. The glare he affixed the two of them with spoke loudly enough on how much he approved of their methods, whether or not they involved outright murder. Yes, he accepted that casualties and scars were going to be inevitable. One way or another, people were going to suffer, and Bertha was just limiting how much of either was going to happen. But that didn't mean he couldn't be angry about having to be involved in it - despite a hero's job, more often than not, involving punching someone's lights out rather unceremoniously. Bertha, meanwhile, pondered Kyou’s point regarding Hush for a moment - until something else came to mind. “Actually… If you think you or your people can take care of Hush and Goliath’s cronies before then, it’d be even easier to get at Goliath. He’ll get angry at first, no doubt - he sees them as tools, sure, but some of his most useful tools being broken’ll no doubt throw a wrench into his plans. And then he’ll get scared. He’ll see that I was right all along. He'll see that we're in enemy territory, and that you can pick off anyone you want at any time. He'll start thinking nowhere's safe. And the best part? So'll the rest of the Vipers."Perhaps a day - or, depending on how close they cut it, mere hours - wouldn't quite be enough for rumours to start spreading through the ranks before the confrontation. But they didn't need hours. So long as Hyousuke won the fight, those two factors would compound and instil the idea in the Vipers that attempting to muscle in on Musutafu had been a bad idea from the start. Conflict was inevitable, but ultimately, the three of them could end things before anything worse that what had already happened.
"As for getting my people out, I can handle getting the bulk of them out of here. They're not stupid - most of them, anyway. They'll know it's in their best interests to follow me back to Tokyo. But there's always going to be stragglers. Now, I know you've got no obligation to be kind here, and if they're stupid enough to stay behind after we cut the head off the snake, whatever happens after is on them as far as I'm concerned. But it'd be greatly appreciated if you just scared them out of your territory instead of maiming them. Rough 'em up a bit, just enough that they know they ain't welcome 'round here any more."
Her gaze turned to Hyousuke after, then back to Kyou, as if to size the two of them up. "Regarding training, well, that’s between you two. From what I saw at the Sports Festival, though, you’re gonna need to work on your agility. Goliath doesn’t hit fast, but he hits goddamn hard."

That was fair. Hyousuke still didn't seem to understand that heroes sometimes leave scars on their opponents and more. Even the good ones. He got his answer. So, it would have an astonishing effect. That was good. "Based on what Hyousuke had told me, I'm probably the best person to handle Hush. Unless you got some additional details that ends up changing my mind. It all depends on timing. With you out of the fight, and technically speaking, on our side, it allows me more flexibility and frees up people. I can do it." It'll leave Oni free to better coordinate attacks, and with Hyousuke and Bertha tending to Goliath, he can shift Vanish as well to handle trouble spots.
Then came the comment about training. He had a few extra things to add to that. "No offense, but you also tend to take unneeded damage to try to deal some back. That mostly works when one has less endurance as you or if you punch harder than the other guy. Either way, two days isn't very long to train or prepare. So, if there's nothing more to discuss, let's leave it here and get some rest. If you need to contact me again, use 856-931-4826 to get a hold of me. For the record, stragglers don't bother me. I might even take a few of them in myself...but we'll see what happens. I won't hold anything they do against you, Bertha." With that, he hoped that was all, and they could leave and get some rest. The number was to a different phone...one that he used for his gang related activities. Not the one that he used with Hyousuke. He was sure that would not go unnoticed.

Bertha simply gave a curt nod in response. There might've been more to discuss, but then was neither the time nor the place. They'd lingered long enough - no need to risk anyone catching wind of their schemes. "Good. I'll let you know where your 'guests' will be arriving as soon as I can convince them to start moving. Now, if you'll excuse me, me and my boys are going to turn right around and pretend we never had this talk. Until next time." Bertha, true to her word, turned and slipped into the shadows. For all the talk about Hush being the gang's premier creep, she seemed awfully proficient at blending into the darkness as well.
That just left Hyousuke. To his credit, though he was far from pleased with how things had developed, he kept his cool enough to focus on the bigger picture. "You and me are gonna need to sit down and talk when all this is over. Until then, I guess I've got some training to do. Don't worry, I didn't just spend my time with Lockon chasing after idiots with cans of spraypaint." The bruises had long since faded, but the memories of the pro's 'intensive' training regimen weren't as quick to vanish. While the thought of facing Goliath down wasn't a pleasant one, it was nothing compared to what he felt fighting a hero that was about as short on mercy as they came.
He turned to leave as well, making sure to glance around before he stepped away. There was no telling if there was someone lurking out there, waiting for their chance. "Until next time, Akuma."
