It was the end of another school day, and Kota was walking home. The more he thought about it, though, he wasn't really walking home, just in the general direction. He knew where he was really going, and home was just an excuse for any authority asking where he was going.
As he continued forward, he looked down at his feet. Kota was unsocial that way, and perfect for him. It meant people would take it that he didn't want to be bothered, or it made him look like he didn't have a very good day. And it worked most of the time. People didn't go to bug him, never tried taking on small talk. And that was good, because he wouldn't talk back anyway.
He took a turn into the woods. This is where he was really going, to his secret treehouse that nobody else knew existed. He hoped no one would ever find it, and he somewhat knew that no one would. He'd found it months ago when he was in seventh grade, and it had been untouched every time he came back.
The leaves crunched under his feet as he trekked through the forest. He could see it up ahead in its old, soft vibe. The outside was covered in branches, leaves, and moss, and small vines snaked up the sides of it. The wood was old and worn down, but still somewhat strong enough to hold up. As Kota climbed up the rope that lead to the top, the texture rubbed on his hands and he got blisters that formed over old, healed ones from the last time he visited. At last, he reached the top, and looked inside his favorite place. He smiled.
The interior was filled with his work. Pages taped to the walls, stapled papers on the ground. And a beanbag chair where he did it all. He flopped down onto the beanbag chair and smiled. It didn't make a single sound.
Suddenly, he heard a rustle from below. He got up and silently walked over to the edge and failed to gasp.
Someone had found his hideout.

Big cities were the center of civilization, or so people tended to think. People seemed to magnetically be drawn to each other in huge clusters or steel, cement and glass. Youta got it. He was here himself. But sometimes it all just seemed a little too much. Even the parks and gardens were part of this giant conglomeration of modern life. Cement, perfectly formed wood bark, artificially formed stones, trees and plants put in exactly the right place in exactly the right way and every thing smelling and looking and being..mild. Neat. Tame. This wasn't nature. It was what civilization wanted of nature.
The young man sighed as he looked at it all and just walked. He looked like any other kid really, though his hoodie might be a little too big for him, covering his jeans down to the beginning of his legs and his hoodie over his head and tied. It was just easier this way, the brownish red of his hair peaking out. He might have looked like he was walking without a destination but he knew where he was going. the first time had been a week or so earlier when he felt like he was loosing himself amid the evenly spaced lines, the tip tap of his shoes against man made surfaces and the buzzing of electrical lights. He had found a place that had somehow lost its domestication and turned feral again. Trees that were part of a forest, leaves crunching under foot. The smell of rot and decay mixed with the odor of growth and promise. He stopped and closed those eyes and took a big breath, letting it all settle his nerves. He pulled out the little bag from his pocket and started walking again, keeping his eyes peeled.
The bent over and picked up a couple heart nuts. It was the wrong season for ginko nuts but the japanese heart shaped walnut could be found nearly all year round. Youta continued to walk, picking some day lily and some fiddle heads. a few herbs here and there. Now if he could just remember where he had seen the tree house. There had been little patches of white that promised somewhere nearby there would be a big patch of mushroom. His mouth nearly watered at the thought of it. And there it was. he smiled as he looked up. Hmm, He could probably get a great view if he climbed up there.

Inspecting further, Kota saw the trespasser. He had red hair poking out of a hoodie, and he had a grin on his face as the guy seemed to approach the tree house. A grin, huh? Kota began thinking the possibilities of what was happening in this guy's head right now. Based of that smile, maybe he was looking for something familiar? He had found something familiar? The tree house, maybe. The tree house! Kota began to freak out.
He scrambled over to the edge so the person could clearly see him. Then he stuck his tongue out to the guy and began to pull up the rope into the interior. It was relatively easy, because the rope was old, but he began to get tired after about the fifth loop in the rope. Still, he kept pulling it up. There was no way Kota would let some guy come into his tree house- his secret place- his favorite oasis away from the world.

Youta was surprised to see a head pop out from the treehouse. He smiled and waved at the boy who looked a few years younger than him. He was a little surprised at the tongue and then to see him work so hard to pull the ladder up. But rather than irritate him, it made the boy with a pranksters heart smile. If the boy had been watching him closely, he might have seen some weird movement under the hoodie where his til tried to twitch with glee. He moved quickly under the tree and house and made his way to the back.
Now he might look like a normal everyday boy but he really wasnt. At the back of the tree he looked for a place to climb. He had big ol hands and weighed hardly 45 pounds. Somewhere in his mind he couldnt help but think about how much fun it would be to climb up and help the boy pull up the ladder. If he could find a place to climb. (up to you)

Kota watched the bigger kid run to the back of the tree house. He had totally missed the whole idea. At that time, though, Kota was so tired that he had to sit on the rope to keep the rest from falling off. Who knew pulling ropes would get him so tired, it was usually running. Although he was never good at any PE or Physical Activity, he still tried. Right now, though? A failure to keep away intruders.
Kota continued to sit there for a minute and wheeze, being left alone with his thoughts. This boy... it seemed he didn't mean any harm. If he was a threat, he would have done something to Kota already. But it was just so hard to trust anybody nowadays! Villains are on the run, proud heroes who think they know what they're doing stumble on, and the people go goo-goo over them. And where did that leave Kota? An awkward klutz who couldn't even talk.
He pulled up the rest of the rope and then crawled into the house. There he snatched a piece of paper and neatly, but quickly wrote a few questions on it. Kota scrambled to the edge of the tree house where the guy had once stood and dropped the paper, hoping he would see it.

He looked around at the tree carefully. Whoever had built the tree house had picked an excellent place. There was no obvious way up and even with his light weight it would be difficult to get up there. As he pondered this, mourning the death of a perfectly good prank, he saw something flutter to the ground At first Youta thought it was a leaf or maybe a butterfly. But a second glance made him wonder He got up and went to look at whatever fell.
As he stood over and saw it was a piece of paper, he looked back up at the by above him. Why hadn't he just asked the questions out loud? His curiosity was stirred quite well. Youta picked up the paper and opened it up. Two questions. He looked up at the other and decided why not answer.
"My name is Youta. Who are you? And as for finding this place, I was following the mushrooms. The monks always said food found in nature is a treasure better than gold and way tastier. Is this your fort?"

Kota took in the responses and frowned slightly. Hmph. There was literally no excuse to send this guy away. Yes, it was his fort. His little sanctuary. But this guy, Youta, had done nothing wrong. He had said nothing wrong. Plus, it also seemed that all he wanted to do was take a peek inside. Kota groaned silently. There was no use in being selfish except for picking a fight. Which, of course, Kota didn't want to do.
He held out his index finger as a "wait" signal, and then got up to tidy things up in his tree house. He scooted his beanbag chair over to the corner, picked up the loose papers on the floor, and dusted all the dirt through the cracks of the floor. Then he walked back over and threw the rope down, which was somehow easier than heaving it up. Thanks, gravity, Kota thought as he tapped his foot impatiently. If Youta didn't come up the rope in the next ten seconds, he would get no answers. To show he wasn't joking, he held up both of his hands and started counting down. Nine seconds left.

The boy held up a finger and then disappeared. It was a little strange but Youta was used to strange. It was the world at this point. So he waited, humming a little and looking around. He was surprised as he watched dust and dirt fall like mist from the bottom of the tree fort. What was he doing? Now Youta was curious. Okay, so Youta was always curious. It was part of his charm and precociousness. It had driven the monks crazy at times. But then they were very good at the silently just smiling and giving no answer thing. God, he was glad he was in a world where people actually talked to you.
Suddenly the rope dropped down and Youta looked up to see Kota tapping his foot and looking impatient. Then he started to count on his fingers. The Tanuki/boy thought about making a joke or pressing his luck but Kota already seemed a bit on edge so it was probably best just to play along. Youta grabbed the rope and pulled himself along till he was at the top. He started to say somehting as he came to the top but suddenly realized he couldnt make a sound. Well that was weird. He looked expectantly at the other youth.

Kota wasn't sure what to expect, maybe for Youta to rise an argument or something, he wasn't sure. He didn't know the guy very well despite meeting him only minutes ago. But he found Youta scrambling up the ladder to the top where Kota was standing. It looked like he had opened his mouth to say something, but couldn't. Kota looked down, slightly embarrassed, but then snapped back up to reality. He had a guest, this wasn't the time to be sad about something you couldn't change. He gestured inside the fort, as if to say, "Well? Are you gonna come in?"
Kota himself walked inside. He ripped off a almost blank piece of paper on the rickety wall and began to scribble out what he thought was a solid explanation. He wrote his name, and how this was his fort, his things, and all of his writing was on the wall. He also wrote about his quirk and the reason Youta couldn't speak within three feet from him. The pencil rattled on the floor as Kota dropped it. Then he held out the slightly crinkled paper to Youta, no longer too impatient about his existence.

Youta saw the embarrassed look from Kota and looked questioningly at him but them the other boy was ushering him. Into the hide out. He looked around and soaked up everything as Kota wrote away. The furry kid rocked on his feet back and fourth, his tail moving around under his shirt. Then the pencil hit the floor. Youta looked at Kota as he pushed the note at him. He took it, loking at Kota for a moment and then turned his attention to the writing. He read it carefully, going over everything and looked at Kota again. Without meaning to he opened his mouth to speak and stopped feeling silly. This had to be tough on Kota.
He pointed at his mouth and made a jibber jabber movement and then made the "NO" mark with his hands and then looked questioningly at Kota, to make sure he had it right. Then he pointed to the entire fort and the walls and ceiling and floor and the stuff in it and then pointed at Kota and looked questioningly again. Then he smiled.

Kota did not know what just happened. He looked at Youta make a gesture that he thought meant "No," with tons of confusing pointing and flailing. What did the "No" mean? Did he even mean it to be no? What was he trying to imply by pointing? He thought he should know how to understand these things by now, since he'd been like this his whole life, but he didn't. Most people had spoken to him more than three feet away. Not only that, but he was a child. What kind of secret code was he speaking?
Kota shook his head and shrugged. He truly didn't understand. Then he backed up to the very edge of the treehouse and shrank down in the corner until he was huddled up in a small corner, squatting so far down that his legs began to get sore even in the first few seconds of being in that position. Then he waved his hand in the circular motion to begin speaking. He hoped that Youta could speak now, since he may be out of the range of his quirk, but who knows. Maybe not. Kota wrapped his arm around his legs again, waiting for a less confusing explanation.

He wasn't sure what the movement meant but he took a stab at it anyway. He cleared his throat and heard a little sound. He smiled and then spoke.
"Oh, Thats better. I bet you can sneak really well. I was just saying or rather.. not saying.. so I cant talk this close to you and this is all yours? Just checking to make sure I understood your note. Neat quirk. Would you like a mushroom? They are better cooked but I dont have any other gift for the host."
He did back up a little, as much as he could so the other boy could have some breathing room and he could still talk. Not that there was all that much room in the place. Still it was a good hideout.

Kota listened to what Youta had to say, and as he listened his face relaxed a bit and then contorted into a disgusted look. He was glad that Youta understood his quirk, but ew. Mushrooms are gross, and Kota hated them. He shook his head from side to side, signaling that he didn't want any. Then he took a piece of paper lying on the ground and scribbled a note on it, then slid it towards Youta. He then put his hands on top of each other and put his head on them, waiting for a response.
"You are correct about my quirk. It mutes any sound three feet distance from me. I think it's anything from neat. And the only gift that you can give me is to never tell anybody about this place. Nobody, no exceptions, excuses, I don't care. I know you are older than me, and that I may not be very threatening, but if I find out that you told someone about this place I will find you and I will ruin your life. Do I make myself clear?"
Kota hid his smile of amusement with his hands in front of it, silently giggling. He wasn't trying to be funny when he wrote the note, but now that he thought about it, it would probably seem very stupid to Youta. Kota calmed himself down and sat up straighter. In all seriousness, he would be very angry if Youta told anyone. Before anything else could happen, Kota had to make sure Youta was trustworthy. Anything said inside his hideout stayed in his hideout.

The boy grinned big and wide and the back of his coat moved rhythmically back and forth. Kota had no idea what kind of pandora box he was playing with. Still if Kota was destined to be a hero it might not be a good idea to make him an enemy. Still, the temptation of a rivalry and so many tricks wormed their way into his mind. It brought the yokai out of him.
"Oh, you are quite clear. Are you sure you wish to threaten me first thing? You could get the same results by asking nicely. Not that I mind but I would do anything for a friend. A threat makes me want to test it. The monks say I have two hearts, though my doctor disagrees.You go to the school here, yes? to be a hero? Think if you want t leave that threat hanging. Do you want a Rival or friend?"

Kota immediately shrank in his corner, the opposite effect than what he intended. Kota felt a bit threatened for a few seconds, then it subdued to flustered. His expression changed into many mixed faces of frustration and fear. Then he quickly snatched the paper that he had given to Youta and wrote on the backside of it.
"Sorry, I didn't mean for it to come out that way. I'm not looking for enemies, it would be nice to have some friends, although it's going to take some bonding if you actually want to be friends with me. So don't get the wrong idea, okay?"
Kota looked up at Youta and thought for a minute. He had mentioned Kota going to school to be a hero... Kota had thought about it in the past, but it just didn't seem like a possibility. He couldn't even turn his quirk off- and he would probably hate going through all the training to actually reach the goal of becoming a hero. And to top it off, he wouldn't even pass the entrance exam. Becoming a hero was a mostly solid "no", but Kota didn't want to let Youta know that yet. Keep things vague. He indented a paragraph.
"I'm in eighth grade, so I can't train to become a hero because that's high school. Are you training to become a hero? With all that "monk" stuff you were talking about and having two hearts makes me think so, I don't know."
With that he slid the paper back to Youta and leaned back into the corner of his treehouse. He glared at him slightly, trying to imply that he wasn't scared, but the clearly visible shaking of his body said otherwise: Kota was downright scared. He didn't want to talk to Youta, all he wanted to do in the first place was to come and relax in his hideout. But here he was with this squirrel high schooler who knew about his secret hideout. Kota also sucked at using any kind of social skills, so that was a minus. He hoped that Youta wouldn't turn on him now.
