Jon unclenched their fists and turned their palms outward in show of peace clashing against their signature bear trap grin. “Truce? For like two minutes.” They hummed a hopeful approval and gave a sharp up rise of their brows waiting for a clear indication no more punches would be aimed at their body. Dropping their hands, the third year shook out their limbs with a quick shake akin to a dog shaking water off. They dug the heel of their palm into their right hip with a satisfying groan, easing the growing ache that been present since morning. It hadn’t quite developed into a hot spot, but the added irritation of the inner liner of their prosthetic hadn’t helped. It was slowly becoming a more prominent annoyance and it showed in the heavier limp.
“Sweet! All right, cool, so,” they started, walking up to the taller teenager and rounding to stand shoulder to shoulder. Or more like shoulder to head if they were being honest. “keep up, cause I’m not gonna repeat it. That horse kick I just did was technically a chassé frontal if I want to be all professional,” Jon added finger quotations, managing to make the gesture feel sarcastic, “about it. But you know, it’s a fight, sometimes you can’t be by the book.” They shrugged with a careless ease.
“I was originally aiming for a Fouette, there’s a bas, médian and figure version, uuuuhhh,” they made a low muttering jumble of words as they quickly translated it in their head. “Ah! Like a low, medium and high striking area of the body.” The teen pointed to their legs, stomach and chest, and head indicating each area. “Technically, it’s like a roundhouse kick, but I didn’t have enough room to maneuver it.”
Jon reached up, tapping the front of the teen’s chest with the back of their fingers lightly. “Swarming is good. Never mind what I said earlier, that’s just some wholesome shit talking. I didn’t have enough brain time to make the Fouette work, so I adapted. But, I wanted to show you a direct Fouette direct. That’s an unbreakable combo that’d make Jago weep.”
Rounding about to face Hyou, Jon offered up another grin, wrinkling their nose in the process. They knew they were talking fast, but there was a lot to rifle through and cherry pick the important stuff to rattle off. “Balance is crazy important.” They threw a thumb over their shoulder. “You saw me use the ropes, helped keep me standing. Nothing wrong with using your surroundings. If anyone gives you shit about it, you can laugh over their unconscious body later.”
“Savate originated on the seas where French sailors would use the ship rigging for support and practice. Also street fighting depending on where you’re from, but you can Wiki that later if you feel like a history lesson.” Jon paused to take a much needed breath. “Kay, so the DFD is a jab with your lead hand to the chin, a whip kick to, hmm, anywhere really. Can I?” Jon waved their hand toward the teen’s side. “Promise, only gonna poke. I’ll buy you lunch afterwards.” They added with an exaggerated wink.
Respecting his answer, Jon barreled on, flailing a hand in Hyou’s direction and then repeating the same move on their own body. “You can hit from the liver up to the ribs.” They pressed fingers between their ribs, a vague attempt to count them to find the right one before giving up entirely and swept their hand up and down their side. “Basically this whole side area is open season. Daze ‘em with the chin snap, catch their breath with the toe tap and use the momentum to cross punch to the temple.” They tapped the side of their head along their hairline. “If you hit ‘em hard enough, boom! Lights out. It does lack a lot of force, getting all up in someone’s business like this.” Jon closed the gap between them, craning their neck further back to keep eye contact. “But it makes up with speed.”
“Also a really good move? Haymaker in the baby maker. Doesn’t matter what you’re packing downstairs, shit hurts like mother fucker.” Jon frowned slightly, dropped their gaze to the mat. “Hey, um, sorry if I kicked you too hard, I kinda forget how strong I am. Which totally sounds like an absolute chad, bag of dicks thing to say. So, I’m just a big ol’ bag of absolute chode.”
“Wanna practice it a couple of times? All slow mo like, then we can tag back in on the real thing? I’m sure you can kick higher than my dreams, blondie, so you can def do a lot more damage than I can.”

Hyousuke lowered his guard a little at the offer of a truce. He didn't peg Jon as the type to get a cheap shot in - especially when it was just training - but he'd been burned before. It was only when they started walking towards him and demonstrating what was going on that he lowered it more, this time dropping it to his chest as he kept his focus on Jon. He offered quiet, sometimes nonverbal, acknowledgement occasionally, but for the most part he was silent and observant. He even shifted his hands and his feet a little to try and ingrain the motions in his memory, wanting to learn all he could about this technique, and how to put someone down with it.
He flinched a little at being touched, though not much. Uncomfortable as he was with being prodded and poked, it was more out of the whole thing being unexpected than anything else. Nevertheless, what little discomfort had managed to manifest on his face was quickly wiped, and he returned to that vaguely neutral expression while he kept his focus firmly on Jon. "Chin, chest, cross." He mumbled to himself. A simple short mantra, but if it helped him strike out a rhythm for his strikes, then he'd keep it close to heart.
A light shrug was offered when Jon asked to demonstrate. "So long as your money's green." He said, before raising his arms just enough to give Jon what they needed. He flinched again, of course, but it wasn't as bad since he'd expected it It was more the sudden unpleasant sensation than anything else - having someone jab at his ribs was never something nice to experience. Hell, he'd won a fair few fights by hitting people's lower ribs, what with them being a more sensitive part of the body.
That expression was broken again, though that time at Jon's comment on whacking people in the crown jewels. Hyousuke couldn't stop the smirk that flashed onto his face, nor the wry reply that he gave. "Hey, if they're not wearing a cup in this business, that's not my problem." He'd been in enough street brawls to know how effective punting someone there was. 'Dishonourable' as some people found it, the fact of the matter was that they were often the ones that he'd left groaning on the floor. "But yeah, let's get this show on the road. Don't worry about hitting too hard either - trust me, I've had worse." Something that the scar running across his eye could attest to, if nothing else. He raised his hands again and moved back into his stance, ready and waiting to strike.

“It’s a whole damn rainbow, brick house.” Jon offered up another brazen grin, all teeth and round cheeks that never quite thinned out from their youth. They were both equally scrutinizingly perceptive and dumber than a bag of rocks, Isamu hadn’t penned their most recent nickname for nothing. They weren’t known for their tact, the lack of it rather, still their poking guideline eased off. They wanted to make sure the kid knew where to hit, but they didn’t need to cause any extra discomfort. Guy took a size four sneaker to his chest, twice, without calling it quits. Dude was due some mad props.
“Remember, practice?” They reached out, resting a hand atop of his bicep for aided balance. “Normally I wouldn’t do this, but Barda’s been giving me lip all week.” Jon bent slightly, rapping their knuckles dully on their right thigh where the socket encased it beneath their shorts. Shifting their stance, the curved bow of the prosthetic bent elegantly as their weight rested fully on it. It was a thing of beauty, built for fighting rather than looks, but still the ever present green detailing stood out against the black and silver.
“Excuse me, gonna flash a little leg. Try not to swoon.” Dragging the edge of their baggy shorts up, Jon unceremoniously dug a finger at the edge of the socket, just below their hip and tugged on the hidden liner insider. They refrained from groaning at the instant relief and an itch in a nonexistent limb was scratched. They figured they had another good half an hour tops before they’d have to take a break and actually check
“So, super quick recap.” Jon drew their left knee up nearly to their chest, balancing on their prosthetic with a slight wobble. “Chassé, front kick and let it come from your hips and plant with the heel of your foot. Did I say that already? Feels like I said that already. Whatever. It puts a lot more destructive force behind it.” They gave a quick snap kick before dropping back down, shifting their stance easily, keeping a hand on the teen’s arm. “Fouette is the side kick and you want to lead with your toes. Drive them hard into a soft squishy part. You know for maximum cool points.”
The teen snorted, pleased the first year was fine with their finesse art of teaching. “Don’t forget to yell, ‘That’s my purse! I don’t know you!’ while junk punching. Kinda like a power mantra.”
“Don’t.” They held up two fingers, pointing them directly at the teen. “headbutt unless you know what you’re doing, like seriously. Looks badass in movies, but you can really knock yourself for a loop. Not that I speak from experience.” They scoffed, knowing their shorter dreads covered an old scar near their hairline. “Use your palm here.” Jon waggled the heel of their hand in Hyou’s face. “Drive it right up into your enemies schnoz. Lots of soft delicate bone and cartilage there, makes for a good crunch. And even if you don’t break bone, it’ll cause a lot of tearing up. Which could be beneficial or detrimental. Cause nothing weirder than a villain crying while they try to eviscerate ya. Also, not from experience.”
Jon paused as if their endless drabble finally caught up with them and had to process it. “Wow, okay, totally went a little morbid there. Sorry, lets put a pin in that for later. Anyways, you don’t always gotta be stronger that your op. Just smarter. Also feel like I said that too. Let me know how this is all going, never really gave any some tips before. Most of the time, people ignore me.”
“Thanks for letting me feel ya up, blondie.” They patted the arm they’d held onto before spinning around and stepping backwards with a couple of quick little hops. Soft grey eyes flickered up as drawn to the scar across his eye, shit looked like it had hurt, and the third year was no stranger to pain.
“Tell me about it. I think I’ve gotten more scars and bruises in my three years here than my whole damn life.” And if it sounded like they were complaining, they added, tipping their head from side to side to crack it. “Lookin’ forward to a lifetime more.”
At his ready stance, Jon lit up, ready and excited. “Sweet times deux, and then I’ll show you how to block this entire madman attack. If you need it, it’s basic blocking techniques, nothing fancy. Anyways, come at me bro.”

A light smirk played on Hyousuke's lips at that confirmation about the money - and a little more at that little moniker Jon lumped him with. He considered it a point of pride that he was built like a brick shithouse and had the willpower to back up that durability, so having someone reaffirm that got to him - in a good way, mind. Nevertheless, he rolled his eyes a bit at the mention of leg, though still deigned to remain nearly silent, instead just offering mumbled acknowledgement or brief nods to show that he was still listening, and taking everything being said into account.
Though the technique was different, from what he could tell, the fundamental principles of the kick Jon was showing him were about the same as what he'd learned from his own teacher before UA. Drive through with the hips - power didn't come from just the limb, after all. It was still largely unfamiliar to him, however - as far as he could tell, his prior experience probably wouldn't do much for him beyond understanding the underlying ideas behind a strike. He couldn't, however, resist offering a quick retort back about headbutting. "And here I thought my thick skull'd finally be useful for something."
Jokes not withstanding, Hyousuke made sure to make a mental note of that palm strike, and its placement. He supposed it'd likely be a bit awkward with people that were a fair bit shorter than him, given the angles, but he'd figure something out. His face betrayed his interest - evidently, the thought of brutal and efficient violence was enough to put a gleam in his eyes. "Don't worry about it." He said, in response to Jon's apprehension about teaching. "I got what you were talking about. Besides, I'll probably get the hang of it better if I just do it either way."
That being said, he took up a loose stance as Jon was getting into his and stepped into range. He seemed markedly less tense than before - a given, since he was just learning a technique, but it was a stark difference to how he was before. Once he was sure that they were both ready, he threw out his left, snapping it towards Jon's chin - but it only tapped him, pushing in just enough to let Jon feel it. Despite Hyousuke's footwork needing work, whoever had taught him how to throw a punch had done well. His movement was fluid and practised - the result of a technique being drilled into him countless times.
The snap kick was a little sloppy, though it was difficult to tell whether that was because of the rather stark height difference or because Hyousuke was having trouble with that particular type of kick. Roundhouses and pushkicks were more his forte - if he wanted something fast, that was what his knees were for. Nevertheless, he managed to pull it off, even if it quite clearly needed some practise. The cross, like the straight before, was delivered with fluidity and practised precision. Brutish though Hyousuke was, even he had his moments.
"Damn it..." He grunted, shuffling back into his stance. "Gonna need a few more tries on that kick. Teach always did tell me to work on my footwork. Guess he was righter than I thought." He shut himself up quite quickly, abruptly stopping talking once he realised what he'd said. Hyousuke didn't much like to talk of his past, so letting something like that just slip out... it didn't sit well with him.

Jon was pretty sure they shouldn’t be as excited as they were to being punched and kicked. But here they were, all excitable puppy with the flop of dreadlocks with each little bounce and sway they did. “If thick skulls got you anywhere, I’d be the mother effin’ champion.” Ooo, self burn. Nice. Jon’s self awareness was almost comical in its simplicity.
Taking a light hearted punch and jab, they didn’t so much as flinch, entirely too trusting their fellow student wouldn’t sucker punch them. There really wasn’t a point other than to be an ass. And, in the short amount of time Jon had met Hyousuke, he hadn’t ticked any checkmarks. “Nothing better than practicing, on some work out dummies. Not this dummy, mind you.” Jon floated a hand to point backwards at their self. “That’s my money maker, plus I like breathing.”
Jon had a gift for not looking like they were paying attention, when they really were. They also didn’t pay attention most of the time anyway, so it was difficult to actually differentiate between the two. Heaven help any mind reader who wanted to traverse that labyrinth of chaos. Dude was a natural, definitely praise worthy and not one to trifle with. Skillful and quick, they’d have to really keep on their toes around him. It was an absolute blast to get hit by him if he was already this good as a first year, he’d be a bangin’ hero by the time he graduated.
“Oh yeah?” Jon said absently in reply to the other guy’s teacher, rolling their shoulder and arm before being wholly distracted by the tape that was rolling up around their knuckles. There was an unpleasant sting settling between their ring and middle finger and they rubbed at the sticky residue. They’d misplaced their wraps earlier in the week and who the hell knew where they left them, Jon certainly didn’t. So, they’d gone with gauze and tape. Their brother would be appalled at their sloppy take. “Who taught you? Bet it was Meka, dude never did go easy on any of us.”
“Us third years finished our last group spar with him.” Tipping their head up to meet Hyou’s gaze. “Pretty sure he would have pushed me off a rooftop,” and took note of the looming aura of silence, like slamming into a wall with an awkwardly trailing off of, “if I didn’t jump first.”
It was easy to read a room when there was literally one other person but Jon struggled nevertheless and trailed off from picking at their wrappings. It lasted for the briefest of moments before they were shaking it off and throwing themselves back into the moment.
“Kicking’s kinda like a hit or miss with me, but I’m pretty flexible where it counts.” They clucked their tongue. “I can’t believe I’m actually asking this, but do you got like a work out routine or anything? Like stretching? Sure, if you kept a consistent thing, it’d help or something. Ugh,” they sighed at themselves. “I’m getting worse at this teaching thing by the second.”
“Okay, you ever get a song stuck in your head?” They paused and looked expectantly at the teen, waiting for him to acknowledge the sudden conversation change. “Just some whatever tune, your fave song of the week, been digging some real old school Mariya Takeuchi. Plastic Love? That shit snaps. Totally recommend it.” Limping their way closer, they raised both hands as if they were about to redirect traffic. “So, like everyone else in this world, I like to listen to music. It’s easier to work out or practice with tunes, it give you a beat and you can work with the tempo. I guess like dancing,” they said, as if suddenly realizing the connection, drawing their hands into fists and tucking arms close to their sides.
“Make it a easy beat to get use to, high steppin’ kick it to the funk. Just don’t try it with Moby. Damn near had a heart attack listening to Thousands.” They exhaled, swallowing back the war flashbacks to that one time in first year. “Anyways, ready to try it for real?”
Jon grinned again much bigger than before as if they were trying to break a record. It was almost too upbeat for cheery third year and bless the guy for not knowing the difference between the various smiles they’d amassed over their life. Their eyes squinted a little with the power behind it, a smirk sneakily hiding in the upturn corner of their mouth. Their only tell was a slight tip of their weight before Jon swept the top of their foot to catch the back of Hyou’s ankle.
In the same instant, they were turning and pivoting, dancing out of the way again and rounded with another smile. “Whomp, whomp,” Jon sing songed back at him, patting their rear end and laughed their god awful wheezy laugh, before lunging forward with a left hook.

Hyousuke's martial arts teacher hadn't actually been any of the ones at the school - they'd all taught him, yes, but he'd learnt the bulk of what he knew before he'd even gotten to UA. "Probably nobody you'd know." He said, pausing briefly to speak before getting back into the swing of things. As much as he could anyway, given that he was still learning, and his footwork left a lot to be desired. It wasn't like he was dancing with two left feet, but any martial artist worth their salt could easily punish him for the mistakes he made while he was kicking or shuffling around.
"Some old guy from back when I still lived in Tokyo. Could've been my granddad, but you couldn't find anyone in the gym that'd be able to beat him. He's the reason I-" Hyousuke paused again, though that time it was because he'd had to catch himself before saying something he'd rather not have anyone know. His past wasn't exactly squeaky clean, and there were a lot of things in there that he wasn't exactly proud of. Best not to reveal it - whatever opinions people had of him, he didn't want them altered by knowing what he used to be. So, quick as he could, he offered a correction to what he was about to say. "He's the reason I go as hard as I do. Guy wouldn't accept anything from his students but their best."
The change in topic to workout routines was something that he welcomed. Anything to steer him away from accidentally saying something he'd regret later. "Don't sweat it. Still doing a better job than some people I've seen try it. If you want to know, it's mostly strength and cardio training. I figured if my heart's the, uh, heart of my Quirk, keeping it as healthy as I can get it's only going to make my Quirk stronger. Strength training, well, I'm hoping the reason for that one's kinda obvious." If Jon didn't get it while they were roughing each other up, he wasn't sure how else he was supposed to get it across.
When he thought about it, though, he couldn't really think of a song - hell, even an artist - that he really listened to much during workouts. Most of the time, he just put on a playlist and hoped that whatever played wasn't objective trash. That was hardly the point though, as Jon revealed after he kept speaking. "Find a beat, then, and stick to that?" He wasn't much of a dancer, but he could at least do something like that. Get something with a steady tempo, sync things up to that, and go with it. He'd seen a few of the guys at the old gym set up speakers when there wasn't anyone else around to disturb with it - perhaps that was what they were doing?
Whatever the case, Hyousuke was only too eager to start things off for real, and dove in for the kill the moment that he was allowed to. His footwork was shaky, of course, and the position of his hands was a little off - nothing that wasn't to be expected, given that it was a new technique that he was trying to be getting used to, but it still stung him when his strikes didn't land as he hoped. Or when they just didn't land at all. He did at least manage to block that strike from Jon, though. His fist clenched and went to the side of his head, arm folding just in time to take the blow - and let him counter with savage roundhouse to Jon's thigh. Or, at the very least, try to.

“All right, hipster,” Jon teased back. “Keep your secrets. But probs yeah, I’ve only been living in Japan for like,” they paused, scrunching their face in thought. “three years? A little before school started. If you couldn’t tell from the,” their gaze flickered down their bare arm, the one free of tattoos, “accent, I’m not from around here.”
“Sounds… exhausting, mate. But in a good way? If anime’s taught me anything, everyone needs a wise, old man who can beat your ass seven ways from Sunday to show you an enlightened path. Third years got Firebrand, but don’t tell him I thought he was old. I’ll never hear the end of it.”
“Yeah, mostly for coordination, a beat helps muscle memory. Had a pretty good teacher back in Toulouse, absolute baller, but I only got a year or so with him. My broski helped me more, learned how to do combos with video game music. Mortal Kombat baby, Jax Briggs.” They pointedly wiggled their faded green brows. “My Iron Fists are based a little off him, think metal punching gloves.” If only they could master them and move on, was another story.
“Heart of your Quirk.” They snorted, before giving a flick of their hand, the meaning unclear as they settled back. Their own bran of humor would never truly make sense, if ever made the effort to explain it. “No, I like that. So, like, what exactly is your Quirk, Yugioh? Don’t gotta give me weaknesses or anything, just curious.”
They popped a thumb against their chest and proudly boasted. “I’ve been likened to a bargain basement Magneto.”
It was like Hyou had a laser beam precision and Jon was starting to slow, even if they didn’t want to admit it. They caught the glancing blow across the barely healed scar from Psycho Cure, but it was enough for them to grit their teeth. “Merde,” they hissed through a grimace and pressed a hand against their thigh, instantly regretting it as the alit nerves flared again. Mika had done a great job in healing, even if Jon damn near fought him at every impasse.
The third year was quick to shake it off, giving it another brush before breaking into a rough laugh in overcompensation. “That’s more like it, blondie! Make me regret it!”
They barely faltered at their new limp, snapping forward like a reed with an equally aggressive swing of punches, intending to push him back against the ropes again. Quick as a wink was their leverage, small and flighty, and even if Jon could hit hard it didn’t matter in the end if their opponent hit harder. They pivoted, shifting their stance to their prosthetic to take their weight to deliver a whip kick with their real leg. It was an active choice, while Barda could take the impact (And they have done so in real fights) getting hit with reinforced titanium was not a fun activity. Again height was their disadvantage, so even though they were still aiming for his head, they knew they’d never connect. It was a focused move and not as willy nilly as their wild punches had been. Point and shoot, like a revolver instead of a grenade.
Still they landed wrong and staggered to stay upright, opening up the gap between them.

"Stamina." He said quickly, in response to Jon's question about Quirks. A second ticked by before he realised that this didn't really give them a lot to go off, so he elaborated a little more. "My heart generates energy. I can use it for stamina, or I can put it into other things. Phones, cars, toasters, you name it. I can't do both at the same time though - I've tried." He grimaced at the closing remark, and glanced off to the side. While he didn't go into details about what it was that happened when he tried, it wasn't exactly difficult to see that the consequences weren't pleasant.
"But that’s why I fight as aggressively as I do." He said, gesturing vaguely between them. While normally he wouldn't have gone into much detail with his peers, he was more willing to be more open with Jon. Perhaps his senior just had that disarming a personality that even Hyousuke, guarded as he tended to be about personal subjects, couldn't help but spill the beans. Perhaps he recognised the value in having someone with far more experience than him evaluate both his Quirk and his fighting style. Whatever it was, Hyousuke elaborated again. "I figure that if I don't need to pace myself, I don't have to worry about going all-out right from the start. But that means closing the gap and making sure it stays closed."
For the time being, however, they could just focus on getting that one technique down instead. Hyousuke shuffled into position once more, and eyed up his target, trying to visualise what he wanted. Springing off towards him again, Hyousuke lashed out, only slowing when he saw Jon hiss and grimace. His guard was lowered for a moment, and he opened his mouth a little as if to speak out and ask if they were alright. but Jon answered that question for him quickly enough. Figuring that they knew their leg better than he did, Hyousuke gave a quick, simple, shrug, accompanied by a casual "Your funeral."
Hyousuke did his best to push back, but strong as he was, he couldn't match Jon's speed in the slightest. He was accurate, yes, but he was big, and he was heavy. Every strike left him open to the more agile of the two, and every movement had to be calculated lest he be backed into a corner by the sheer volume of blows. He'd fought smaller and swifter opponents before, of course - avoiding them would be difficult with a frame like his. But they were his peers, or some other back alley brawlers. Jon had skill, and it showed.
(Comparatively) slow though he was, Hyousuke was still quick enough to dart in when he saw that opening. Rather than be concerned about it, he saw it as an advantage to be snatched up. The mantra he'd repeated before echoed in his mind - chin, chest, cross. His left lashed out like a whip, cracking against Jon's chin. His foot raised, and smacked against his chest, leading into that final cross to his temple - or, at least, he tried. His footwork, while solid, had not miraculously improved tenfold in the short time they'd been together. Even for something just intended to open Jon up to a strike to the head, it lacked force. And though he kept from stumbling, it was clear his final strike was off the mark, landing only as a grazing blow against Jon's head.
Hyousuke moved back into his stance and kept his arms up, but didn't make a move. Something told him that Jon would have something to say about whiffing during an opening.

“Oh yeah?” They echoed after the first year’s explanation. “Guess I got a real run for my money, huh.” Stamina, no wonder the guy was a beast. “Don’t sweat the small stuff, big guy. You’re a first year, we all didn’t come out the mom chute playing Mozart.” There was no holding the snort of laughter that followed, Jon terribly amused at their brand of stupid. “That’s impressive as shit, Duracell. Just think, when you can charge a phone and beat ass, you’ll be unstoppable.”
“Hells yeah, can’t argue with that. But uh, what’s your backup plan should your batteries deplete? Mine’s crying an excessive amount.” Hyousuke was starting to sound more and more like them, Jon no better. Hit ‘em hard and fast and if they get back up, try not to panic. In the three years at UA, they still hadn’t found a real battle strategy other than reign chaos from above. “Figured if it didn’t appeal to the tender hearted, it’d make things a little uncomfortable.”
“Heavy Metal’s my game, but don’t let the name fool you. I can do a bunch of stuff, more than the average playa but more ain't always better. It’s a real Jack-of-all-trades, master of none. If things get a little junked up from here,” they tapped their temple, “to here,” and raised a hand, flexing fingers, “Then I’m royally screwed. Then I gotta kick ass the old fashion way and like, who has time for that? Not me. Jeopardy isn’t gonna watch itself.”
Exhaling slowly, Jon’s gaze flicked to Hyousuke’s feet, then back up along his body in a flighty path before catching their tongue between teeth in a mock aborted raspberry. They inwardly hummed to whatever song their brain switched to, bouncing back and forth with the melody. Sweat slicked the back of their compression shirt under their loose tank top and if they were hot before, they were starting to swelter. Eventually they’d have to take a break to mop themselves up, the joys of having trouble regulating body temp when you were down a limb. The tape around their knuckles was shredding and they figured they had a couple more rounds before it was straight knuckle on behemoth first year muscle and spending a few hours on the mat and bag hadn’t made the transition any easier. And they were pretty sure bleeding on your fellow student was not a team building exercise, no matter how they spun it.
Sweeping around to try and stay a step ahead of him, Jon could only brace for impact as the giant wall barreled toward them, connecting hard. Two things happened, the hair tie holding the impossible amount of hair back snapped, flipping off into the ether where it’d join a hundred other comrades in death. Green dreadlocks framed their face, softening their already cherub features, a few longer ones spilling into their face like an annoying curtain. They were quick to give a quick shake of their head to allow for the second thing, the comically wide-eyed look they gave him was matched with an open mouth of surprise. All it needed was a perfectly timed fly before Jon was laughing, a hand pressed to their reddening cheek, fingers grazing along their jaw as they straightened up.
“Holy shit, way to go Battery Pack!” It’d been a solid hit and they may have wheezed a little. “Damn near saw my life flash before my eyes. But you forgot one thing.” They paused before tilting to look around him, barring teeth in a feral grin. “I got backup.”
Jon was a dirty liar and they may have felt a twinge of guilt, but they all but yelled, look a distraction, at Hyousuke, and if he fell for it, then it was own fault. If he didn’t well, then the joke was on them. They went for a low kick, aiming for the back of a knee with the intent to drop him, or at least make the kid falter. Then they’d try for his back, intent to climb him like a mountain and... and honestly, Jon hadn’t thought that far ahead.

Whether it was due to the hubris from having managed to land an actual solid blow against Jon, his usual lack of braincells, or some combination of both, it didn't cross Hyousuke's mind that perhaps he was being subjected to a ruse. In a flash, he spun round, throwing up his guard to try and block any cheap shots coming in from behind - only to find that he was defending against thin air. In that split second between him scanning the area and being leapt upon, the gears were visibly turning in his head as he attempted to figure out what was going on. When he finally figured it out, the look of realisation on his face couldn't have been more obvious if a lightbulb popped up above his head.
"Son of a-" he muttered, only just realising what was happening when it was too late to stop it. He didn't even have time to brace before Jon was upon him. He grunted loudly at his knee falling out from under him, and his legs hit the ground with a dull thud. That much, he supposed he should have expected. The climbing, however? That much left him more confused than anything else. For a few moments more, he remained kneeling, more out of confusion at what was happening than anything else. He racked his brain for an answer, cycling through potential responses, but could only manage making a perplexed expression.
Once he'd gathered himself enough, he turned his head a little, trying to get a view of Jon while he shifted into a slightly more comfortable position. "I'm gonna be honest with you." He said, his tone making it clear that he was a little confused, if his expression hadn't done so already. "I'm not sure where this leaves us. I think you win?" If it was a real fight, Jon certainly would've - they had every opportunity to do any number of things to keep Hyousuke down. A blow to the back of the head, more to his legs, even a pair of cuffs - he was just lucky they were sparring.

Focused thinking aka tunnel vision led Jon to climbing halfway to their goal before they realized exactly what was happening and they paused, one leg tossed over Hyousuke’s shoulder and an arm wrapped loosely around his neck. They were pretty sure he didn’t want a metal knee joint digging into any part of him and was the only thing touching the ground with surprising little weight resting on the prosthetic’s sole. And most certainly wasn’t because of their height difference or the awkward piggyback ride Jon found themselves in.
They were all too happy to met the odd look directed at them and returned it with a polite smile. “Gotta keep the Energizer bunny on his toes, expect the unexpected. Never know when someone’s gonna reign a little terror from above.” And left it at that, as if it was an actual explanation and reasoning.
“Uh... sure?” Jon shifted their grip to avoid strangling the teen and proceeded to give the softest karate chop to the side of his neck with an cheery, “Hiyah. All right, now I officially win.” They tossed back their head, giving a theatrical, dramatic laugh. “I have slain the man with the strength of a thousand suns and with it, I win the adoration of every woman and enby! Ever. And like five really hot dudes.”
Jon plopped a hand atop of the blonde locks and briskly ruffled them. “Hey, do you think if I tug on your hair, I could pilot you like a meat mecha and make some linguini?” They made no attempt to move from their half perch, and added as if it was some sort of consolidating alternative, “I’ll even take a microwaved can of ravioli.”
“You know what would have been a good move? Pretty sure you could toss me like a small sack of beans, but like say I was like a medium Hulk size, pretty beefy but not like squish you beefy, yeah?” They wiggled a little, hiking themselves up to free up their hand again to point with two fingers in front of Hyou.
“So, your op gets you on your knees, what do you do? Stop, drop and barrel roll, only instead of flames you’re putting out, you’re rolling your enemy into a pancake. Boom, they’re on their back, you’re on top of them to elbow them in the gut or face or anywhere. Unless they grab you, hmm…” Jon trailed off thoughtfully, resting their thumb and index finger against the first year’s chin in a mock thinking pose.

As disarming as Jon's friendliness was, Hyousuke couldn't stop his expression shifting to one of vague annoyance at his hair being ruffled. It was only for a split second, and he hoped he caught himself before Jon could notice anything out of place, but even their personality couldn't stop him from taking issue with people touching him so brazenly. Having his lights punched out was one thing, and he supposed he could tolerate the piggypback since it was part of the fight - even if Jon had started to linger a little more than he was entirely comfortable with - but Hyousuke wasn't exactly a handsy person.
He didn't really have the time to dwell on it either way, with Jon dispensing more advice and diverting his attention. Hyousuke listened intently of course, taking it in as best he could manage, though whether he could retain much of it was something that remained to be seen. "So drop us both and start hitting?" He said in reply, perhaps oversimplifying it a bit, but hoping he got the gist enough that it showed he understood. "Doesn't sound so hard to me." Of course, that didn't take into account Quirks and gear and such, but with two combatants that close, sometimes a good old-fashioned smack to the face was all that was needed.
"I think I can manage that. Guessing you'd rather I didn't practise on you right now though?" Despite his attempts at making light of things, he couldn't help but pull a face for a moment at the hands at his face. Hyousuke recovered quickly enough - quickly enough that nobody noticed anything too out of place, he hoped - but he certainly wouldn't have complained if it sent a message.

Jon shrugged awkwardly in their position, dwelling all of a fraction of a second to think it over. “Basically yeah, go cave dweller on their ass. I dig the windmill approach, swinging both arms till you hit something. Pending of course the position you’re in. Personally, though, I’d probs just elbow someone in the chest and duck out. I’m a better fighting on foot, so log that away for future ref, Ratatouille. But, with my hero gear you do not want me landing on you, because I will break something.” And terribly uncomfortable and painful for them, but semantics.
“Please don’t.” They made a face, sticking their tongue out and tightened their grip as if expecting to be tossed over a shoulder. “Dunno ‘bout you, but I’m all funned out. I’m getting too old for this.” Jon groaned, more painful and annoyed than anything else. “These eighteen-year-old bones ain’t what they used to be.”
Being plastered to his back, they had a slight advantage of every little movement and didn’t need a phd to know they’d overstayed their welcome. “Sorry, I am a feral gargoyle and will perch unless otherwise told.”
Jon clambered off Hyou, dusting off his shoulders and back with a quick flourish before offering him a hand up, flashing their traditional lopsided grin. “Thanks for kickin’ my ass, you really do hit like a freight train and that’s super hot.” They tugged on their tank top, flapping the hem to give them the pretense of getting air, flashing bits of the grey compression shirt they wore underneath.
“Speaking of hot, I gotta call it and grab something to drink. I have zero concept of time, so dunno if the cafeteria is serving lunch or dinner. If you’re down, I’ll buy you the finest carbonated beverage it has to offer. As thanks for letting me whale on ya.” Jon tugged on their wrappings, unrolling a length around their fingers, giving pause. “Unless you got more in you, then I can watch respectfully from the floor and be the greatest peanut gallery you’ve ever seen.”

Hyousuke rose slowly from the floor, stretching out slightly now that he didn't have an oversized koala clinging to him. Though he didn't look at Jon for long between his winding down, Hyousuke still nodded along to show he was actually listening instead of just ignoring him outright. Predictably, however, it was the promise of only the finest vintages that the nearest vending machine had to offer that got him to stop what he was doing. Hyousuke straightened up a little so that he wasn't at risk of falling flat on his face while attempting to converse, and wiped the sweat from his brow.
"Well, I was gonna go a few more rounds on a dummy, but now that you mention it, I-" he didn't get the chance to finish - his stomach did that for him. A growl just loud enough to be heard above the distant din of the rest of the gym's attendees more or less conveyed what he was going to say. Grinning sheepishly, Hyousuke just shrugged at Jon. "There's your answer. I'm gonna go hit the showers and get changed - I'm hungry, but not enough to show up smelling like the canvas."

Jon gave the vaguest attempt at hiding their grin at the growl. “Sounds like the elder gods have spoken in your favor. I’ll throw some snacks in too.” They patted their own stomach in camaraderie. “Probably need to eat an actual meal sometime today. Coffee and energy drinks can only get me so far before I start tasting colors.”
“Oh, right.” Jon took a preemptive sniff of their shirt, tugging the loose material to their face and scrunched their nose. “Yeah, no, same dude. I’m gonna shower back at my dorm.”
They were sore and tired and their definite limp was going to be even more pronounced. But man, it’d been worth it. They’d certainly gotten out of their own headspace for a while. Getting stuck too long made them impossibly grumpy, and that was a position solely reserved for Kaz. “So, like, see ya at the cafeteria in like half an hour? No sweat if you don’t want to see my mug again.”
“But hey, if you wanna go again another time, I’m down for it. Bring a friend too. Or an enemy, whatever, I don’t judge. These hands are rated E for everyone.” They emphasized their eternal bane of amazing humor by lofting their mostly tape free hands, knuckles already sporting faint bruises from before.
“But hey part deux, good game.” They stuck out one hand in a friendly handshake, if one ignored the length of tape trailing from it. “You did amazing. Kicked my ass nice and proper. Thanks for hanging in there with me.”
