WORD COUNT 203
| The sound of boots squeaking and stamping against the canvas provided the soundtrack Hyousuke's sparring with Tsubame. It was supposed to be a light session - something to help him drill the techniques he'd learnt into his memory. With only a few days until the Sports Festival started, he wouldn't have time to learn anything new, and that timespan wouldn't be enough to bolster his body in any meaningful way. Despite that, however, he had started to swing wildly the moment they began, charging in with a weak guard and his technique becoming sloppier with every strike thrown.
His punches left him wide open. His kicks left him unbalanced. His elbow and knee strikes missed their mark more often than not, and those that did hit were easy to bat aside. He was unfocussed, acting like his mind was somewhere else, while his limbs were acting on autopilot. It was one of the first rules of fighting to never take your eyes off your opponent, but there he was, his gaze seeming to drift away for seconds at a time, only coming back when he absolutely needed it to. Hyousuke was far from at the top of his game, and yet, he kept fighting. |

It was supposed to be just like any other day; detentions with Hyousuke were becoming a regular thing even past the week she gave him as punishment for his actions previously. A bit odd that he would want to continue to be around her even after he didn't have to anymore, though she only found it odd since he seemed so against it from the get go. They continued to meet day after day, same time during the weeks after school. He trained with her and she continued to try and get him to open up. Recently she thought she had gained some ground through the help of her old friend from a support gear shop. Since then she had been careful not to do anything that causes Hyousuke to backtrack on his progress. Today was like any other day, or at least it was supposed to be. His fighting style had become sloppy and gave too many openings than his normal. Tsubame didn't even use her quirk in his training session since he seemed to be kinda out of it. She blocked everything and even got very close to kicking his ass pretty early in the match. This wasn't the boy she had gotten to know over the course of a few weeks. The boy she met had such fire and such conviction that even if he was wrong he wanted to prove to Tsubame that he was right. The boy in front of her now was not working as hard as he showed her from the beginning. Just what was wrong with Hyousuke?
"Enough of this mess...." Tsubame said with a huff, gripping his arm tightly and hip tossing him to the floor as hard as she could without hurting him. Since she wasn't using her quirk, she didn't put as much power as she normally does into it. That is, if the boy allowed himself to be thrown. Regardless if he was thrown or not, Tsubame lightly skipped back to avoid any more fists or kicks coming her way. Her yellow eyes rested on him for a moment before she came forward quietly to poke his forehead lightly. "Hey, Yo-kun, what is going on? I thought you wanted to spar to help train for the sports festival?" Her head tilted slightly as her face still showed concern for him. Was he sick? Did he get injured again while she wasn't paying attention? After a moment of her hard look down at him as her concerned thoughts swirled, she sighed and scratched at her head as she then stood up straighter. She wasn't sure 20 questions was going to get him to open up. "Yo-kun, if you want to talk about it, i'm here. If not, you can go for the day if you feel tired." Her voice was soft with her concern, acting more like a close mentor than the Vice Headmaster she was.

WORD COUNT 413
| Hitting the mat rather unceremoniously, Hyousuke let out a grunt with the breath that was forced out of him, but the way he got up... it lacked his usual spirit. By that point in his training, he'd learnt to rise to his feet in the blink of an eye, never giving his opponents a chance to fight him on the ground unless they forced him to stay there. And yet, he seemed to struggle to haul himself upright, like his mind was elsewhere the entire time. It was only when Tsubame spoke that some measure of focus returned to him, and he rubbed the side of his head, like it ached more than he could manage.
Much as he tried to hide it, Hyousuke was a terrible actor sometimes. Try as he might to hide his real feelings, even his facade could slip. He looked towards the canvas, but the anxious expression he bore was plain for all to see.But he was not wont to talk about his troubles. Not with a friend, not with a teacher, not with anyone. He didn't need to, he was strong by himself, and he didn't want to inflict his troubles on others. He was prideful, through and through.
"I'm fine." Came his response. Curt and quiet, delivered while he was taking his gloves off, seemingly having decided to take her up on her offer to just end the session early. "I'm just..." He was just what, though? To say he was nervous would imply that he didn't believe he could win, in his eyes - and to say that would be to imply weakness. To show vulnerability. Something that he hated to do, with every fibre of his being. "I'm..." He couldn't finish the sentence. The words caught in his throat, blocking it and choking him as he tried to force them out.
It was like his body was instinctively rejecting the idea that he had to speak. Those fingerless gloves still on, the velcro having been the only thing loosed, he gripped the ropes and leaned against them, facing away from Tsubame while he contemplated what to say to her. Blocked by his body, it was difficult to see, but his hands... they were trembling. Hyousuke inhaled, deeply, but silently. A shaking breath left him, and he spoke - his voice trembling like his hands, but stern as he could make it. "What I say here doesn't leave this room. We keep it between us. Promise me." |

This boy was easy to read. At least today he was. Something was bothering him and he showed it. Tsubame couldn't help but wonder just what has him riled up. She knew the sports festival was tomorrow and that had many students worried over it. It was a time to show everyone just what they were made of and to gain valuable contacts in the hero world. For Tsubame this meant finding some who wanted her to join their hero agencies and finding people to train with. She remembered her nerves, but she then thought of her friends that she had back in her time at UA. They helped her through it all and she even helped them along as well. Team effort, that was what it took. Looking back at the boy in front of her, she noticed that he looked very unsure, at least his body language from behind had told her as such, and he took his time responding. She had seen Hyousuke in many moods, but this one was not something she had seen on him before. Usually he seemed to always keep a wall between him and her, never allowing her to move forward more than he wanted her to. Since she was used to such tactics in people, mainly Walter, she let him decide the distance and work from there.
"If you want to tell me, Yo-kun, i'm here to listen." Tsubame kept her distance from him, but stayed looking at the young student before her. "I promise to never speak of what we talk of outside these walls." Tsubame was not one to tell others what was within others lives or hearts; it just wasn't her style. Her eyes softened as she continued to glance at the boy in front of her. She remembered her own walls that she put up when she had come to UA. Nobody came close to her unless she allowed them to. That is, until she met Walter and her other friends. Once she and Walter became comfortable with each other, they brought each other within a safe range and work from there. She became close to Hideki and Hatsuharu as well, letting them into her personal bubble and opening up more as time went on. She stood at ease; her body relaxing as they no longer sparred together right now.

WORD COUNT 234
| He knew she was as good as her word. Anything he said wouldn't leave the area unless he wanted it to, and he knew she wouldn't judge him for it. Even so, his grip on the ropes tightened while he faced away from her, to the point where his knuckles turned a frighteningly pale shade, and his teeth grit against each other while he tried to work up the courage to blurt out whatever was on his mind. He tried to hide it as best he could, but he was trembling, his attempts to steady himself on the ropes failing.
"It's... It's about the Sports Festival." He began. Even that much seemed to tax him, but still he continued, willing himself forward. "My Quirk... It's..." The words were forced out, with him seeming to choke on each one as he spoke. His nails dug into the sides of the ring, and he paused, attempting to gather himself before he tried once more. "I... I don't think that I..." Again, he stumbled, struggling to put his thoughts into words. For him to seek help was rare - but to open up like that? It was pretty much unheard of. For him to have so much trouble wasn't unusual.
Eventually, he managed to speak his piece. It was in a strained, struggling whisper, but in the otherwise dead silence, he could still be heard. "...I'm scared, sensei." |
