WORD COUNT 525
| Even after the sports festival had drawn to a close, and everyone had had a chance to get their bearings, the wounds Hyousuke had from that fight were still fresh. Not the fractures in his hand, mind - though they hadn't yet healed fully, they were more or less fixed thanks to the school's efforts. It was the emotional ones that had cut him the deepest, carving out a wound he wasn't sure would ever truly be mended. To have been defeated in front of so many people was one thing - it was humiliating, but deep down, it was what he had expected. It was how easily he'd been defeated.
Most people would have been forced out of the ring or to the ground after a long, hard-fought battle. Most people would have been able to take pride in how hard they fought. But Hyousuke? He'd never stood a chance from the beginning. Ryu had been holding back on him, and all it'd taken was a scant few moments before he was flung out of the ring like a pest. Like he hadn't even been worth the other student's time. Hyousuke's grip on his bottle tightened as he remembered it, and his fingers trembled around its plastic surface. He counted himself lucky that he'd just come out of a training session - perhaps he could chalk his apparent absent-mindedness up to simply being drained from having to go at it so hard, and for so long.
He eyed the instructor from the bench, watching how he trained with the newbies. Not an easy task, considering the man's frame was large enough to block most of the view from where he was sitting, but Hyousuke figured it made something more entertaining to watch than some sweaty older men trying to bench a few kilograms more. Still, his gaze fogged over, and his mind once again drifted back to that utter farce of a fight he'd been engaged in. All that buildup beforehand, all the time they'd spent slugging it out in front of the audience... Why had Ryu not just gotten it over with before all that? Had he been pitying him? The very thought had Hyousuke's teeth gritting against each other, and his grip tightening yet further.
It was only when the loud clang of weights being dropped to the floor sounded that he was shaken out of his incensed state, and he remembered that he was supposed to be observing the instructor working with the knife. At some point he'd have to get up there too, and learn how to counter someone coming at him with one. If he lasted long enough on the course to actually even get close to becoming a hero, that was. Briefly, the idea of using a weapon like that crossed his mind - something to give him an extra edge in a fight. But it was cast out as quickly as it'd arrived, the notion dismissed as idle fantasy. There was no point in thinking about it.
Not when he wasn't even sure if he was going to be a part of the course long enough to make use of it. |

Hyousuke seemed to be down. He wasn't as focused as what he normally is. But perhaps that was because of his poor performance in the sports festival. This wasn't one of their normal sparring days, but Kyou found himself coming here anyways due to the self-defense instructor. A monster of a man that was easily six feet, eight inches in height, very broad and muscular, with graying sides and a blond head. Dino Tomoshibi if he remembered right when he looked up Jun Tomoshibi, the hybrid elementalist that ended extremely well. There were a few cops going through their training, along with a few other people just wanting to know how to defend themselves should something really happen.
Kyou himself wore his PE clothes, as usual every time he came here. The red head already somewhat knew of the Tomoshibis, mostly because they usually donated a good amount of money to the charities either him and his school by extension, or his fathers ran. If they were to become heroes, they would be well respected, and their son seemed to be on the right path so far. He decided to volunteer, despite how intimidating the large man was.
He lunged like most do, but the second the large hand grabbed his arm, Kyou flicked his wrist over to his other hand, and aimed to stab the arm that held him. While that did force Dino to let go, his other hand still grabbed the back of Kyou's neck, and brought him down, planting his knee in the boy's back, and slamming his now free arm onto the hand that had the knife. There was no budging. Though the former police officer did commend the red head about his quick reaction time and trying to mix things up, since things don't usually go as planned.
After a few more exercises, it would be readily apparent that Kyou knew how to use a knife. While unusual for a high school student, Kyou also kept the full extent of his skills hidden. He could tell the police officer was a little suspicious, but no evidence of any wrongdoing or anything kept him at bay.
When it was done, Kyou went over to Hyousuke. Who still seemed troubled. "Penny for your thoughts? I have a pretty good feeling on why you're down and unfocused, but I've been wrong before..." He sat next to the boy and watched him.

WORD COUNT 366
| Hyousuke flinched slightly, surprised at Kyou's presence - then looked a little sheepish, upon realising that it made sense he was coming to sit by him once he was done. Hyousuke wasn't so presumptuous as to say that they were friends, but he supposed that they'd been training together for long that he could at least consider them apprentices. He did his best to force a small smile - something he'd become well-practised in by this point -- but his body just wasn't having it. Limitless though his physical stamina was, his emotional fatigue was not something so easily cured.
He waved his hand dismissively between them, his lips curled up, but a sombre look in his gaze. "Me? I'm fine, no need to worry." There was a brief - though pregnant - pause, before Hyousuke looked back to the ring, his smile growing - but also becoming rueful as it twitched up. "Yeah, you don't believe that for a second, do you?" He didn't know Kyou half as well as he thought he should, but he knew enough to know that such a blatant lie wasn't going to do anything more than delay questions.
Old habits told him to just leave things at that. There was no need to elaborate, no call to offload his emotions onto someone else. But all those years, he'd been keeping up a wall, trying to hold back everything he'd thought and felt about the world, and the people in it. But that moment - that single, humiliating second - had all but shattered it. And his feelings had started to leak through. Vulnerable, confused, and afraid, he found himself speaking before he had a chance to stop. "You saw the Sports Festival, didn't you? Saw me..."
Lose, he wanted to say. But the word caught in his throat. It was one thing to admit defeat against a sparring partner, or your opponent in a lesson. Bitter though defeat was, it was a learning experience in an environment purpose built for it. But that had been an arena, with thousands upon thousands of people watching him with bated breath. Deep down, he felt that 'lose' didn't cover the utter humiliation being handled like a sack of refuse instilled. |

Kyou gave the blond a look. It was obviously a lie. And luckily he didn't have to call him out on it. Hyousuke even commented on it. Nodding, he actually sat down and just waited. Hyousuke was prideful. Perhaps one of his weak points...he was too prideful. Kyou had a certain amount of pride, but he liked to think that it wasn't so strong as to be a severe weakness or hinder any growth he may make. He was about to ask again when the UA student started up, likely before his own mind could stop it. Seemed Kyou had dented that wall the blond liked to put up. "I scored two tickets. Asa-chan and I went and saw all three events. You showed a lot more grit than I expected..."
He looked at the blond with a hard look. "It was a bad match-up. That's bound to happen on occasion...it's a risk all heroes and villains and everyone that uses their quirks face. Oddly, the ones that were the best matches against that dragon boyo were also ones that you would have stood a better chance against. But don't get too down on it. Like I said, you showed a lot of grit out there. Some heroes and people like that."
The blazing red head leaned forward, and put his elbows on his knees, looking up slightly. "Your quirk is subtle...but you're like one of those ancient energizer bunny commercials...you keep going. Whatever the exact mechanics of it is, it seems like it would benefit greatly from the use of support equipment." Seeing the look that Hyousuke made, Kyou's eyes narrowed and made a different face. "What? Some quirks just naturally work better with something man-made. Whether it's to enhance it or better channel it. Don't tell me you have something against support equipment?"

WORD COUNT 323
| Though Kyou's words were kind, to Hyousuke, they rang hollow. It just felt like someone pitying him; like he was being some trite encouragement to stand up and try again, like he hadn't done so a thousand times before. "Bad matchup... 'S putting it lightly." He said to himself, his face forced to bear a rueful smile, while his voice barely managed to disguise the bitterness that plagued him. That grit he'd shown in the festival... he'd stopped seeing it like that, after a while. It'd been stubbornness. Pigheaded, dogmatic stubbornness that stopped him from seeing the truth of the matter - that, more likely than not, he just wasn't hero material.
The thought of using support gear caused an almost instinctive expression to flit onto Hyousuke's face, though it left as quickly as it'd arrived. It was a flash of contempt - of a blatant desire to not even think about putting on anything more than the costume. Normally, his response to the suggestion of using support gear would be a flat-out rejection, or if he was feeling kind on that particular day, a brief "I'll consider it" without actually even giving it a second thought beyond how to reject them a second time. But, exposed and mired in self-pity, he couldn't bring himself to do even that.
"It's a long story." He said, still wearing that forced smile, and waved his hand dismissively. "Doesn't really matter much at this point anyway. Can't really say how much longer they'll let me stay on the course." If he didn't cut his losses and leave before he humiliated himself even further. With how consistently low his scores were in practical exams, and how he always seemed to struggle with academics, it was a wonder that he'd even been admitted into the school, much less allowed to stay on the course. Far as he was concerned, it was more luck than pluck, but luck couldn't last forever. |

Kyou really wanted to strangle this boy. Just making it to the tournament is an accomplishment in and of itself. Especially with the scenario like that first round, holy crap. Time to get his mean streak on. "Don't be a dumbass. Every person to have gotten to the tournament has been safe from being scrapped from the hero program. Just a tiny amount of research would show you that. No matter how bad your grades might be, they won't take you out of it without some seriously good reason. But it won't be based on your performance in the Sports Festival." It had always been because of something else. Now, on to the big story.
"Now, you're talking to a guy whose quirk is telekinesis based. So everything around him is a piece of support equipment. Every hero and even most villains have something. Some small gadget, a weapon, or even their costume having some form of protection are all considered support equipment. Despite all the things I'm involved in, I have the time. So spill why you're handicapping yourself." The guy's quirk would seriously benefit from something. But his pride and his animosity towards such items were getting the way. Pride was definitely the blond's Achilles' heel. Being too prideful tended to do that...lead to one's downfall. Still, hopefully what he was likely to say, using a bit of his mean streak, would change the guy's mind.
But any advice after Hyousuke's story was gonna cost him an answer to a very personal question he had asked earlier. But right now, it was time to listen.

WORD COUNT 496
| Hyousuke made no attempt at hiding the irritation on his face at the mention of him being a dumbass. Teeth grit and eyes contorted into something resembling angered disbelief, he looked scornfully at Kyou, wondering just what the hell he knew about the situation - about how poorly he'd been performing in pretty much everything, and how consistent such performances had been. He failed to see the wisdom in Kyou's words, too blinded by that momentary rage to understand that it wasn't always raw skill people looked for in a student - potential could be just as valuable a resource, if tapped into early enough.
Still, despite losing his cool a little, he managed to bite his tongue long enough to listen to what his sparring partner had to say on the matter. But it wasn't enough to keep him from seeing he was being manipulated. Looking more bitter than angry, he turned a glare towards Kyou, the look in his eyes both impassioned and exhausted. "Fine." He said, his tone flat save for the twinge of resentment being carried with it. "If it'll get you off my back about it." He paused a moment, collecting himself, bracing himself before he spoke.
It'd been so long since he'd told anyone, though. He failed to find the words at first, and remained silent save for his quiet breathing while he tried to string together something coherent. "I... don't want to rely on people." He responded. It was obvious from his strained tone that even speaking those few words had taken their toll on him. And yet, he persisted. "When you're born with a Quirk like this - as weak as this - you don't get many people that tell you that you can be a hero. So I..." He paused again, wondering if it was wise to continue.
In a sense, he was frightened. He was baring his soul for Kyou to see. To pick apart, to peer into and gawk at. This was an integral part of his ideals; of who he was, and how he lived. And he was presenting it to Kyou, knowing full well that it could - and, most likely, would - be torn to shreds before his eyes. But, he reasoned, it would be worth it. He could just continue on, regardless of anything the redhead told him, if he listened to Kyou at all. he could adhere to that ideology, clinging to it tightly... even if it killed him.
He swallowed. He braced himself again. He spoke once more, though his voice trembled so very slightly when he did. "So I can't let people see me use gear as a crutch. I have to beat th- I have to prove my own strength, without anyone's help. I need to be strong in my own way - on my own terms. I can't let anyone think my strength is because of my gear. If there's any doubt that I got that power through my own efforts? I've failed." |

Kyou saw the rage. Did...did he have a complex about doing poorly in school? Did he even listen to him? Oh boy...well, Kyou listened to the story. And rose a thin red eyebrow. "So...do any of these people that said you can't be a hero attend the greatest hero school in the country, perhaps the world?" This was a point that he hoped would go in his favor. If none of those lame brains can't see the potential, and weren't going to UA, that said a lot about them. If the answer was no, Kyou would smirk and continue. "Then they can shove right off. You won't get an argument that there is a bit of a fine line between using support equipment as a crutch and still utilizing it as a part of your own strength. A lot of which depends upon the exact mechanics of your quirk. The fact remains, you made it to the tournament, despite handicapping yourself. That's quite an achievement, and you should be proud of that. Especially considering that first event.
You'll always have doubters, and those saying shit. Fuck'em.
As far as relying on others is concerned...get used to it. Part of being a hero is relying on others to do their jobs. Be it other heroes or police officers, your sidekicks, your mentors, whoever maintains any equipment you decide to use, fix up your equipment or costume, and doctors and those that heal you, or whoever. What do you bring to the table when, not if, you have to work as a team is what matters.
Your main concern should be your end goal...being a third a rate hero because you can't get past that damnable pride of your's, or become the best hero that you can be. Even if it means using some kind of equipment."
Standing up, Kyou moved more in front of Hyousuke. "I know how to use knives. I have good hand to hand combat skills, as you already know, you still keep me on my toes and brings me to my limits damn near every sparring match we have. My quirk is great at range and is pretty efficient. My issue is, in close, I don't have the stamina to keep up with a close range brawl. I'm better than you are in close quarters combat, that's the only real reason I keep beating you. If you were equal to me? I'd run out of steam and you'll roll over me.
I know you're not much into sophistry, but seriously take into consideration that strength comes in all shapes and sizes."
Kyou started to move away, but stopped. "If you need a tutor, don't hesitate to call. Though to be honest, UA's hero students are well known for helping each other out, despite being rivals. Before dismissing the advice outright, remember the reason you decided to walk this path. If you wish to fight me with quirks on full display, get a teacher to supervise and get me a visitor's pass. But that along with continued advice will cost you. The answer to my earlier question."
Kyou had noticed Shouta at the entrance. Normally, his roommate and best friend wouldn't come see him. But something must have happened. "See you around, Hyou-chan." The red head walked away. Hoping the blond would take into consideration the use of support equipment to be the best he could be. But only time would tell.

WORD COUNT 348
| He'd never thought about it before, but Kyou was right - he was the only one that'd made it into UA. True, it was still the halcyon days of hero education, so it wasn't like there was a horde of other schools clamouring for the honour, but that didn't stop UA from being the top. And the fact of the matter was that nobody else had followed him in. For all the storm and bluster that everyone had made, for all the boasting and the putdowns, Hyousuke had been the only one to pass into the school. True, it was by the skin of his teeth, but he was there nonetheless.
The more Hyousuke listened, the more the cogs in his mind began to turn. Hyousuke couldn't deny that he was wrong, after all. His entire ideology - the parts of his personality and his mindset that defined him, and had brought him as far as he could go, were being challenged, and it wasn't a pleasant feeling to listen to it. But, silent as he was, it was obvious he was actually listening. He stared intently to Kyou, nodding, but remaining quiet, wanting to take in and digest everything that he was being told. It was difficult, but good sense - for once - prevailed in his mind, and he held his tongue.
The most he could do in response was raise his hand to say goodbye, and mumble out something unintelligible to go along with it. Hearing that much, in one go... It'd left him dazed, and with more to think about than he'd expected. Deep down, he'd always felt that something about how he fought was wrong, but he'd brushed it off as temptation. As a desire to just take the easy road, and avoid whatever hard work he'd need to put in to take hold of his dream. It was a while until he managed to gather himself, but once he had, Hyousuke stood and gathered his things. Perhaps it would be best to call off training for the time being - he had a lot to think on. |
