As the afternoon sunlight streamed in through the windows, a quiet calm hung over the 1-A dorms. The building was largely empty, with most students out busying themselves with training of one kind or another, but amid the stillness a gentle melody resonated through the halls. The deep rhythmic thrumming of a bass guitar sounded out from an open doorway on the second floor of the building, just barely audible from the floors above and below.
Ren sat against a beanbag with his instrument cradled in his lap, fingers dancing up and down the fretboard as he strummed away. He was dressed casually in a parka jacket and a frayed pair of jeans, a large pair of headphones adorning his head while his messy blonde hair hung low over his face. His whole body swayed with the music that filled his senses, eyes closed, head bobbing to the beat, and hands moving with the flow of the steady unending rhythm. It had been quite awhile since the last time he was able to indulge in his hobby, but after a bit of warming up he had slowly blocked out the world and slipped right into the groove again. It was an almost euphoric feeling that was always difficult to describe to those that didn't practice music, but it was also the main reason why he started playing in the first place.
It wasn't something that lasted forever though, and as the song ended, Ren found himself leaning back and letting his headphones fall around his neck. Gazing out the window, he stifled a yawn, once again feeling a wave of fatigue passing over him. Like so many of his classmates, he had spent much of the last few weeks training in preparation of the upcoming event. This was one of the few chances that the students had to really make a name for themselves before graduation, so it made sense to take it seriously... However, the simple truth of the matter was that the boy was exhausted. Even though he had been allowed to cut back on his work schedule recently, he was still trying to juggle the job with the increased regiment, and it was starting to take it's toll. That very morning he had been out practicing with his quirk in ground gamma, but now he was about at his limit. Even if he wanted to keep going, it would do more harm than good now. No, for the time being the best thing he could do was relax and regain his strength.
And that's exactly what he intended to do, slipping his headphones back on and queuing up another song before he had a chance to start nodding off.

The sun streamed into the small tea shop, illuminating the tea shop through the gaps in the curtains. It was kept intentionally dark as the patrons relaxed to tea and some small treats. There was little chatter in the shop as most patrons were focused on a small music performance. Every two weeks, a girl would come and play her instrument for the patrons. It was not well-paying but the girl was not very interested in that. She just wanted to play her koto and spread the joy she felt when she played the instrument. The performance was coming to an end, the girl carefully playing the last song. - "You did well, as per usual, Himura-san. I wish you luck in the coming festivities." The elderly woman gave a slight bow to the student. Smiling a bit, Fu bowed in return. Carefully adjusting her hearing aids, Fu made her way back to school. It was a nice day. It was generally quiet in the city and she imagined it was the same with the school. Unlike her fellow students, she was not out training or thinking about strategy for the sports festival. Most would say that Fu should be doing that and her brother would probably push her to train if he was around. The same was with Daiki but he had been distant at late. Granted, most students in 1-A had been distant at late. Half the class was unrecognisable to her and the people who did know her have had limited interactions with her. Eventually, Fu would get back to the school, stopping by at a small sushi place to get some sushi to go. Walking up the stair case to get to her room, koto in one hand and sushi in another, Fu didn't notice the music at first. It was subtle enough that her hearing aids wouldn't pick it up. Unlocking her door, she placed her koto under the bed and was about to eat the sushi she had bought when she finally heard the soft tones of a bass. Naturally wanting to investigate, Fu was completely silent trying to figure out where the sounds were coming from. She deduced it was an instrument being played rather than just loud music but that was about it. Getting up, she took her bag of sushi with her and went on a hunt. Arriving before Ren's room, she knocked and asked "Ren-chan, can I come in?"

With his headphones in place again, Ren let himself sink back into the music. Slowly his head started bobbing and his foot started tapping as they synced up with the beat of the song. He counted out the measures of the intro as they passed, each only helping to build the anticipation. 13... 14... 15... 16... and... His hands started to move again, fingers moving dexterously between the strings as he strummed away. It was a bouncy, repetitive rhythm, one that felt more and more natural each time he repeated it. That's what playing a bass was like, you acted as a bridge between rhythm and lead, often playing the same notes over and over, but sinking deeper and deeper into a groove as you did. The deep tones reverberated with you, made you feel the music as you played it. It was easy to get lost in the sound when the music started to take hold.
And that's why Ren didn't notice when someone came to knock at his door. His eyes closed, ears full of music, foot tapping, body swaying with the rhythm, senses shut off to everything else, there's no way he could have noticed. No, he just kept on going right to the end, hands shifting along his instrument in the endless cycle of the bass line. Luckily, the song in question wasn't terribly long, so when the track began to fade out and his eyes opened to find a figure standing in his doorway, they had probably only been there for a minute or so at most.
Ren gave a start when he finally noticed the presence, hastily removing his headphones before it even registered who he was looking at. "Oh, Fu... Sorry, had my ears turned off, I wasn't being too loud, was I?" He scratched his head timidly, he hadn't actually thought there would be anyone else around in the dorms to disturb, so he'd been playing with his amp on. Relatively low, but still enough that it could be heard in the rest of the building apparently. Well, no one had come to complain so far and he'd been at it for about an hour now, so maybe it was fine? He shrugged slightly and then looked up at his friend with a smile. She'd only just recently gotten back from the hospital, and he hadn't really had much of a chance to catch up with her yet. Since he was trying to rest, now seemed like as good a time as any. "You know you don't have to ask. Come on in, make yourself comfortable." He said as he shifted to make room, the huge bean bag was plenty big enough to fit multiple people comfortably, though the chair at his desk was also free if she preferred that. Either way, he'd set his base aside from the moment, wincing slightly at a pain in his side from the movement before turning back to face Fu. "Haven't seen much of you since you got back, how have you been holding up?"

Fu closed her eyes a bit, just focusing on the music. Hearing the slight difference those who either studied or played music could easily pick out compared to those who didn't. It was one the first things her mother told her when she was teaching her music. Music was something that was to be carefully dissected, according to her mother. It took her a while to learn that lesson but she did learn eventually. That helped her get to the spot she was now with her koto. It wasn't just learning the notes and songs. It was also understanding the notes. Understanding the songs. Understanding the writers even.
Being drawn back from her musing by Ren's voice. Stepping into his room, she gave him a bow. "Your music was fine, Ren-chan. I just wanted to listen a bit. That's all." Fu smiled a bit before sitting down on the ground. She really missed chatting to Ren. He probably was her best friend in the school and after her illness. Well.
"Well, I've been busy with catching up. I really wasn't able to do much work while sick..." Fu paused a bit, before adding "I've been worried too. With the Sports Festival coming up, I'm not excited to be put under the public lens again/"

"Well, I guess that makes sense." Ren nodded as Fu brought up her backlog of school work, turning to face her as she sat with his arms crossed atop his knees. With how long the girl was out of school, it was only natural that she had quite a pile of material to burn through, and that wasn't even counting the high standards of the UA. Ren was actually a bit behind himself in that regard as well. Between his job and the extra training, his studies had been taking a back seat and his grades outside of the hero classes had started to reflect it. That was something he'd have to address after the sports festival was over... It'd be a shame to not make it due to a bad math grade when he'd been trying so hard everywhere else. "If you need any help catching up, let me know. I can honestly use the refresher, and it'll be easier with company."
As for the festival itself, well, that was another thing Ren could understand. He was definitely working hard to get ready for the event, his sore muscles and aching bones were proof enough of that, but the venue itself was something else. A full on competition with his classmates to prove that they'd grown? Sure. But on a stage that the whole country watched and dissected? He could very much do without that. "Yeah, I get what you mean, not particularly looking forward to that part either..." He didn't really talk about his past or his family much, but by now most of the school knew who his 'father' was, and that was only one of the people's whose attention he'd much rather avoid.
But that wasn't all of it either, was it? Ren could understand his friend's problems far better than she probably expected, having faced the same issues before he came to the school. He traded one name for another, but the problem was the same. Being measured against a name. Being put down and isolated when you failed to meet some ridiculous standard. Being reminded of everything you dislike about yourself constantly... His golden eyes unfocused as memories tried to bring themselves to the surface, but it only lasted a brief moment before he forced them back. Those thoughts wouldn't help anyone right now. "Don't worry, we'll think of a way to get both of us through it, trust me." He moved his gaze back and smiled."But I doubt that's all you wanted to talk about though, right? C'mon, tell me what's on your mind."

"I'd appreciate it, Ren. I have packet of worksheets that is just 'What would you do in this scenario'." Fu giggled a bit, thinking of the mountain of work waiting in her room. It was a crazy what they expected her to do. Not because it was so much work, rather, the school didn't give her a single physical exercise assignment. They claimed that they didn't want to overwork the recovering student. Then they turned around and expect her to participate in the Sports Festival. It was a bit ridiculous in her mind but she wasn't going to question it. It sounded like something her school would do and she had to live with it. She chose to go here.
Stretching a bit, she cracked her knuckles. They had been aching ever since she got done performing. "Eh, it's just been a lot. I'm not even sure what to talk about half the time. So much has happened." Fu sighed a bit, scanning Ren's room. She never remembered visiting his room that often. When they hung out, it usually was at work or when they cooked together over the weekend. She didn't remember much else from the time before the cancer. The doctors said it was one of the side effects of the treatment. She didn't mind though. She was alive. That's all that mattered.
"I'm honestly just not sure anymore. I feel like I have to do super well at the Sports Festival for the school to think I should still be in hero course. I haven't really shown my worth. It's just a lot to think about." Fu shrugged a bit, before rubbing her eyes. "I'm just tired of all of it."

"Alright, guess we'll have to dig into that later." Ren nodded and gave Fu a thumbs up, but then his expression turned slightly embarrassed and he scratched his head timidly. "Just... don't expect a whole lot from me on math. I'm not good for much beyond what I use in my recipes." Math and History were his two worst subjects, always had been. Science though, strangely enough, was something that he tended to grasp quite easily. Perhaps it was because he had some rather direct applications for that knowledge with his quirk.
As Fu further elaborated on her worries for the upcoming event, Ren leaned forward slightly and rested his chin atop his arms. It was a perfectly understandable concern, especially when one considered what she'd been through at UA so far. Very quickly after joining the hero course she'd transferred to one of the general education classes, and though she did manage to transfer back in, she was hospitalized almost immediately after. Far from an ideal situation to be sure, but... Ren tilted his head from side to side as he mulled it over. "I get what you're saying, but... I don't think it's so much that you need to do super well or anything. I think you just need to do the best you can." With how many extremely talented individuals made up their class, it was rather ridiculous to expect any one to be able to truly stand out among them, especially when handicapped by a prolonged medical leave. "Aoi sensei always said there's more to being a hero than fighting and being flashy. As long as you show how hard you're trying, no one can really fault you... And besides..." He lifted his head back up and met her gaze with a rather confident look. "I know you Fu, you've got what it takes. Your best will be more than enough."

Fu sighed a bit. She knew Ren was coming from a good place. He was her best friend after all. After she split with Daiki, he had been the next closest thing for her. Even before her recent run in with a deadly disease, he always been her closest friend. They worked at the same Ramen shop. They enjoyed similar activities when it came to cooking, music, and so on. "I appreciate that. I honestly think the school is just trying to get me excited for something I am not looking forward to. They have a weird way of doing it." She giggled a bit before taking out her phone. Her mother had texted her again, checking up on how she was doing. These messages had become habit for her mother and even though Fu would often only reply 'I'm fine.', her mother would keep asking every two hours or so.
"Did you meet my mum when she was around? When she saw our class photo and some of the silly pictures of you guys on my phone, she always commented that she would love to meet some of you." She wasn't sure if her mother met any of her hero course classmates. She met some of her general studies friends and some of her work friends from the tea shop she would part time at.
"I missed cooking with you when I was in the hospital the most honestly." Fu admitted, blushing a little at the implications of the statement.

"If there's anything I learned since my first day here, its that just about everything about this school is weird." Ren chuckled along with Fu at the comment. The slightly off-kilter atmosphere for the school had been apparent almost instantly even when they were still in orientation, and Ren could still remember Dr. Shisutemu and Sunstorm's... unique entrances on their very first day. If that hadn't set the tone for what to expect, he didn't know what else would have. Hell, even Fu's own brother had made quite a scene that day... He couldn't help but smile at the earlier memories of his life at the UA as he rested his chin back down on his arms again.
When Fu went for her phone and changed the subject, Ren found himself hesitating for a moment before actually answering the question. "I... did, actually..." He looked down as a bit of embarrassment once again crept into his expression. "...It was when you had your operation. I know you told us not to come, but... I went to the hospital anyway. Met your mom while I was in the waiting room, and asked her not tell you I was there..." He'd managed to keep his presence there a secret until now, though only because it hadn't really ever been brought up. He'd hoped that it would stay that way, but he wasn't about to just lie to his best friend about something so admittedly silly.
"...Well, that's something that we can at least fix pretty easily now." Ren continued as he forced himself to look up again, trying his best to brush off his own confession. "We might not get many chances until after the festival is over though.... Hmm...." He tapped his chin idly as he considered it for a moment. "...How about this then? I don't think training is going to do me any good today, so how about we start going after that pile of work of yours in a little bit, and then later you can help me put together dinner?" With how close the event was, there probably wouldn't be another good opportunity for the two to spend some off time together until after everything was over, and Ren had to admit that even though he'd been visiting at the hospital, he'd been looking forward to Fu's company again ever since she got out.
