Sigga loved wandering through the alleyways and side streets of Musutafu. They were so different from those back in America. No visible potholes. No litter tarnishing the concrete beauty. And bicycles. Bicycles everywhere. Despite being such a large city, it was relatively rare to see any cars moving through the side streets. No wonder the populace was so eager to take up cycling. And the homes and businesses lining the roads, they looked so small, each property seeming to hug the next one over. But it didn’t appear crowded or cramped to the girl. Cozy, more like. Maybe she should seriously consider making Japan her permanent home. There were still many years left for her to think about it before she’d have to forfeit one of her citizenships. Stupid rules.
The side streets were relatively deserted despite it being close to noon on a Sunday. It gave the fish, who was dressed in her stylishly torn-up grey tank-top and green UA skirt, plenty of space to casually explore her environment without having any witnesses think her some sort of tourist. She’d stop to survey just about anything that caught her eye, from the esoteric road-side shrines to the utterly mundane yet equally fascinating manhole covers. With schoolwork piling up and internship on the horizon it was rare for Sigga to indulge her whimsy like this anymore. Every now and then the bald student would take a random turn down some other unknown side-street, unperturbed by the fact she did not have a smartphone on her to find her way back to the UA campus when she was done. But that was a problem for later.
It wasn’t long before a new attraction found itself the focus of Sigga’s attention, the astute girl spotting nearby the familiar shape of a small quadruped casually munching away at a tin of tuna. The only rational action for her to perform upon this discovery was, naturally, to approach the feline. “Hey there neko-chan~” the student chimed, crouching down to give the calico a good scratch on the neck. The kitten, completely uninterested in the girl’s sudden arrival, continued to munch away at its tin of food. Apparently, it wasn’t the only one partaking in some lunch. Sigga quickly spotted another trio of cats nearby all equally absorbed in their own meals. It kind of looked like someone had only just recently left them some food. Are they strays or something?
The bald girl, hand still busily occupied with the first kitten, spun her head around but saw no one. Huh. Her attention returned to the neko at her feet who, at this point, had finished with its meal and diverted its full attention to Sigga’s oversized hand. The other cats nearby too began to notice the new human. A fervent grin crossed the girl’s face at the sudden attention they were now giving her. This would end up being the positive peak of their interaction and, for reasons that would soon become clear, the… ‘highlight’ of her day.
The eager felines started sniffing the equally eager girl who was now attempting to give out as many scratches, pats, and rubs to the best of her abilities. Having only two hands meant not everyone would be able to receive attention at any given moment, but the girl was doing quite the job of it regardless. A sudden, “Ow!” broke the tranquility of the clowder. More from surprise than pain, Sigga yanked back her hand which had a moment ago become the chew-toy of choice for the calico.
“Hey now. That wasn’t very nice,” the teen remarked to the kitty, pouting her lips at the sudden betrayal. “Even if you- Hey!” This time the girl stood up while exclaiming, as one of the other cats nipped at a stray finger. While this was happening a third cat, encouraged by the other’s mewing, took the opportunity to unsheathe its claws and climb up the girl’s bare leg. “Ack!” exclaimed the fish, now back stepping away from the group while also attempting to separate the leg-climber from her person. It required a bit of effort but eventually the climber’s claws detached from her skin leaving barely-visible marks along her left leg.
“Hey now,” Sigga repeated, now visibly cross at the black tabby she was holding aloft. The cat, unperturbed with its uncontrolled change in altitude attempted to shimmy out of her grip, ignoring the girl’s protests. “I’m not a tree. You can’t jusssss…” Her voice trailed off in a hiss as she caught sight and sound of a rather startling development.
A cacophony of adorable meows and cries captured her attention. From behind every corner and atop every fence, box, and post, kitten after cat appeared. Every pair of vertical feline preceptors pointed her way. Every animal venturing closer and closer with their hungry, pleading mews. There must have been a dozen of them. Maybe more. “Oh noo… not again…” wined the fish, dropping the cat and backing away slowly.
“I-I don’t have any food on me,” she begged. The cats were unconvinced, seeing very well that there was food right in front of them. The standoff lasted for but a moment longer. When the next tabby, poised to strike, leapt at her the girl bolted. The chase was on.
You could barely make out Sigga’s echoing “Nuuuuuuu…” among the chatter of cats, as they pursued the fleeing fish through the side streets of Musutafu.

Attending UA was a dream come true for Rin, and although she was finding life in the dorms surprisingly agreeable, she often found herself longing for her old neighborhood. She'd never admit to missing her parents and brother, but... Well, actions spoke infinitely louder than words, and whenever the opportunity presented itself, she would find herself wandering the familiar streets near their apartment. Sometimes she'd drop in to visit her family, but their schedules were often busier than her own (which was rather impressive, really, considering the curriculum at UA) and so Rin would spend her time reacquainting herself with the area, visiting the local animal shelter and helping out the numerous elderly neighbors who shared the Takeshis' apartment block.
Today, the girl was combining two of those tasks - helping her neighbors, and aiding the shelter. Mrs. Shotaro had a collection of donations for the shelter, but the elderly woman had underestimated the generosity of those within the apartment block, and she couldn't carry everything alone. She had been trying, stubborn old lady that she was, but Rin had caught her before she'd gotten more than a block from the apartment. Now Rin was meandering down the street, two boxes of canned food and towels in hand, with another three bags of various cat toys dangling from her arms. It was a bit much for the small girl, but Rin wasn't going to complain - not when it meant Mrs. Shotaro could go home, and the shelter animals could be showered with well-deserved love and attention in the form of nomms and play!
It was quite alarming to hear the yowls of hungry felines along her chosen pathway. At this time of the day? All the local cats and kittens tended to be several alleys away, chowing down on tuna. Rin had yet to discover the identity of the mysterious fish-provider, but she was sure that the furry critters should all be tucking into their feast right now. What could possibly have pulled the kitties away? Rin paused, huddling against a building so as not to block any potential foot traffic, and peaked over the boxes.
Oh.
Well, at least the other girl didn't run into her, pressed against the building as Rin was.
As the horde of felines pursued their target, Rin realized she could identify approximately half of them. She was fairly certain she had seen the girl at school, too. The skirt definitely added to the likelihood that they were another student at UA.
"Kuri!" the bluenette scolded, spying her brother's old cat amongst the fray. The fluffy grey cat slowed, looked toward the familiar voice, and turned to saunter back to its' owner's sister. The loss of one cat amongst the multitudes went unnoticed by the whole. If she wanted to rescue her fellow student, Rin would need something a bit more attention-grabbing. Mrs. Shotaro had said something about the stuffed mice having catnip in them, hadn't she? Given the way Kuri was rubbing against the bags she'd just set down, it was likely some contained catnip. Rin grabbed a handful, and tossed them into the midst of the felines. It startled several of the cats, and a few disengaged from the chase to play with the enticing toys.
What could she do about the remainder chasing the fish-girl, though?
"Take the next alley on the right!" she called out to the other teen. "There's a fire escape - you'll have to jump for it, but the kitties shouldn't be able to follow!"

It is a well-established fact that compared to other land mammals humans are remarkably good at running long distances. Upright posture. The ability to shed excesses heat through sweating. Few in the animal kingdom could compare, much less outdistance a human in a marathon. Maybe a pronghorn antelope. Or an ostrich. Certainly not a cat. Sigga was neither of these things, however. At times it came into question just how much of her was even human, so sluggish was her pace. Understandable, though. She had just ran nearly the entire length of this particular district.
Okay… Maybe it was more like… three blocks…
Three houses?
…
She definitely ran by a stack of boxes or something. That was a measure of distance, right?
Almost completely oblivious to the environment around her, Sigga kept up her now lethargic pace. The clowder of felines nipping at her heels had no issue keeping up with her, the occasional quadruped attempting to leap at the hobbling student. It was a strange sight, seeing a fish pant so. Though, at least her conviction was admirable. Her momentum may have slowed, but she didn’t stop. With certain doom a pace-and-a-half behind her she still had motivation to keep moving.
But she couldn’t keep even this up for long. Soon it would be all over. The girl could already picture the headlines in the local news. Prospective pro-hero devoured by ally-cats. U.A. reputation tarnished; student incapable of fending off felines. Perhaps that thought would be what did her in. She’d simply die of embarrassment first. That would save her honor, certainly.
The bald girl wasn’t sure if the voice came from within her own head or from some other realm. But even in her fugue state the advice was clear. Sigga kept her eyes forward. There was hope yet. In a sudden burst of speed the girl willed her body forward. Up ahead clear markings in the pavement gave credence to the ethereal voice that called out to her. It was another one of those things you’d never see back in America. Here in Japan, though, each side-street intersection was clearly marked with giant T’s or plus’s as the case may be. At least in Musutafu. You couldn’t miss a turn if you were paying attention.
Sigga zagged right, nearly stumbling over her own feet as an airborne feline flew through the space the girl had occupied a split-second earlier. The advice had been solid. Up ahead was the prophesized fire escape. She just had to reach it before her legs gave out.
Each breath hissed out of her lungs and the girl planted one foot in front of the other. She was gaining speed now, not losing it. As she reached her destination the teenager gave one final bound forward before landing in a crouch and rocketing gracefully upward, much like a cat that had just spotted a cucumber at its feet. Her oversized breadhooks grabbed hold of the lowest rung on the fire escape, skinny arms tensing as they pulled up a hundred-pounds of fresh fish. She was safe for now, though she dare not look down.
Back on the ground a congregation of cats began to form, those that had been chasing her as well as a few others that only now joined in. The strange creature hugging the second-lowest rung of the ladder seemed to be rather limp. Was it finally dead? A few of the cats took it upon themselves to investigate. The dangling legs were only a foot or two above the pavement and still within reach. A calico attempted to bat at one of the feet while another grey tabby took it upon themselves to sample one of the laces that had become undone during the chase. Others too contributed in their own way. Some of the cats feigned disinterest as if to temp the fish back to the ground. Others took turns mewing, meowing, and making a general ruckus. Some simply watched. The fish remained motionless and limp.

Rin chewed her lip, eying the boxes she'd been carrying. They were heavy, and the escape route she'd suggested was in the opposite direction to her destination. Perhaps she could leave them here? Just whilst she checked in on the other girl, and determined that the horde of cats was no longer in pursuit? This was a good neighborhood, surely the packages and bags would be fine for a few minutes. But... she couldn't leave them here. Mrs. Shotaro had entrusted her with their safe delivery. Wherever Rin went, so would the donated goods.
Well, most of them, the girl amended as one kitten trotted off, mousy 'kill' triumphantly held between its teeth.
With only a little reluctance, Rin gathered the bags and boxes, and jogged toward the alley. Upon arrival, a quick glance was all she needed to assess the situation. Her fellow student... hadn't quite managed the escape, it seemed. Rin hid an amused grin behind the boxes; whilst the other girl was unlikely to see Rin's reaction, it still felt rude to show enjoyment of another's misfortune, no matter how cute said misfortune was. And it was cute. Insanely so. A mob of felines milling about on the ground, the furry little critters, (predators, Rin reminded herself forcefully, they were tiny bundles of teeth and claws, and fluffiness did not change that!) just waiting for the other girl to slip.
She knew three more of the gathered cats by name. "Kintoki, Soba, Rascal," she called, and miraculously, the cats listened, leaving the gathering to come rub against her legs. The ginger, Kintoki, pawed at the bags she carried, and Rin set aside her delivery once again. All three cats immediately began digging through the toys, until they each found something to entertain themselves. Rascal had found himself a jingly ball, and the sound was enough to draw a few more away from the collective. Still, there were far too many cats batting at the other girl's feet, and Rin was a little concerned that she didn't seem to have moved. At all.
Well, Mrs. Shotaro probably wouldn't mind if she sacrificed a can or two toward bribing the cats to leave their current prey alone, right? In the end, the food was going to strays, mostly.
"Are you okay?" She asked the dangling girl, whilst crouching to open a can of food. The sound, and then the scent, caught the felines' attention. In only a few seconds, they had turned from their target, and pounced upon Rin's location. She took a few steps back, disentangling a kitten from her pants leg, and opened another can, in the hopes that she could avoid an all-out catfight by providing enough noms for the fluffy terrors. With the cats distracted, Rin moved over to the fire escape, and just managed to refrain from poking the other girl to see if they were still alive.
"Do you need a hand up? They're distracted, but I'm not sure how long those cans'll last. If you get to the roof, they won't be able to follow you easily, and should follow the source of food that is in range. I can probably crack open another can, so that following me is more enticing. I was heading to the shelter, anyway, so it might be good if the stray follow me there. If you go across the roof, and then head down into the alley there, the scent trail should be broken enough that the cats don't start pursuing you again."
Heading down the opposite side of this building might prove to be a challenge for the other girl though, if the fire escape had given her this much trouble. Rin didn't even think of the difficulty her usual descent path for this building might cause others. There were no conveniently placed fire escapes on the other sections of this building, though the route Rin envisioned did have a rather sturdy pipe that one could shimmy down, if one was careful.

She. Was. Spent.
Both stamina and spirit had dwindled down to nothing. Fortunately her arms had hooked around the ladder rung at the elbows so at least Sigga was no longer required to expend energy she no longer had. She simply hung there, limp. Still drawing breath though. Partially through her gritted teeth, though also in part through the gills between her ribs. Not by choice, mind you. Getting stretched out by gravity like this had the thin slits that were the girl’s gills parted under her shirt. The slow inhaling and exhaling motion of her lungs allowed the air to trickle in and out through whichever orifice it so desired.
The girl allowed herself to blink at least. That didn’t require much effort and the action reinforced the knowledge that she was, indeed, still very much alive. And in one piece. She heard a voice from behind. The familiar one that had provided the information needed for her to extricate herself form her precarious situation. Sigga didn’t turn to look. Not at first.
Soon a few peculiar sounds piqued her interest. Various rustling and jingling coupled together with a concerned query from that familiar voice eventually caused the weary student to tilt her head. “Hnng..?” From her peripheral Sigga caught sight of a blue-haired figure of similar height to her own.
“Hn?” The student repeated, surveying the other girl who had just finished setting up some well-timed bait before waltzing over to the dangling fish. “Uh… um….” Sigga’s mind was still catching her up to the situation at hand, slowed down by the sudden offer of help alongside a detailed plan on how to escape.
She thought on the advice and offer for a moment. Then, wordlessly, her amber peepers squinted and assessed the situation around her. Most of the cats had moved along. Some were now chowing down on the new sources of food while others went to entertain themselves by the nearby toys and, more specifically, the boxes containing said toys. Further down the alley she could see some of the cats that had gotten tired of the chase. Or bored of it. There didn’t seem to be any felines waiting to pounce on her at that very moment.
Sigga’s eyes flickered towards the other girl again, as if to confirm she was still there. Without warning the bald student unhooked her arms and dropped to the ground. She did a poor job of estimating where the ground was however, and her feet buckled leaving Sigga to land on her rump. “I’m fine. I’m fine.” she assured the other girl with a dismissive wave. It wasn’t quite time to pick herself off the floor just yet. First she needed to catch her breath.
“Ugh… I really thought the cats in Japan would be different.” Sigga uttered, immediately giving away her foreign background. At least this time didn’t end with her jumping off a bridge and into a river. Her eyes looked at the few felines that still seemed keenly aware of her presence. They didn’t approach now that the fish had a body guard. “Thanks, by the way.” Sigga offered. “Never really understood why groups of cats get so aggressive like that sometimes. Chasing people, and all…” A real conundrum, the motive of which was lost on her.
“Were you the one leaving food out for them back there?” she asked in a curious tone, nodding towards the direction they had come from. Feeding strays was well out of Sigga’s budget. She did like the animals despite the occasional incident, but who didn’t?

The unintelligible questioning from the other girl only managed to raise Rin's levels of concern. The way her shirt seemed to flutter against her body was interesting, if unusual. Presumably a portion of her Quirk, which was currently unknown to the wannabe medic. Though now that she was looking more closely, the other girl's aquatic features were a bit more noticeable. Like the fins on her legs - huh, how had Rin managed to miss those in her first visual assessment? Well, she'd certainly spotted them now, as the other girl dropped from the ladder, and promptly landed on her ass. Rin winced in sympathy; landing on one's tailbone usually hurt. Her offer to assist was waved off, and Rin was content to let the other girl catch her breath.
Rin blinked, twice, when the other girl indicated that she wasn't local. Huh, that was... unexpected. Probably shouldn't have been; she knew UA took foreign exchange students on occasion, she just hadn't realized there were any international students amongst the current batch of first years. Rin could be wrong, about their age, but she was fairly certain the other girl was in the same year level as herself, if not in the same course. Rin had tried to get to know the others in the General Studies' department, and she felt an aquatic Quirk would have stood out to her. Mostly because she had so many questions. It was probably safe to assume the fluttering fabric was the result of gills hidden underneath the girl's top - did that mean she could breathe under water with them, like a fish? Would the type of water affect that ability? Fresh water species typically couldn't manage for long in salt water, and vice versa.
Oh, she was being spoken to - best to get her rambling thoughts back under control. She watched as the familiar grey fluffiness that was Kuri sauntered into the alleyway, trotting over to the two girls. He gave a plaintive meow and sat on Rin's foot, earning himself a huff of laughter as she bent to pick him up. Kuri didn't seem inclined to cause trouble now, and the other cats were engaged with chowing down on the opened cans, playing with the toys, or simply lazing about, feigning disinterest. At least, she thought they were pretending. Predators didn't usually just give up on their prey, after all. And she didn't think she was enough of a deterrent for the furry terrors.
"I was, ahh, happy to help?" It wasn't meant to come out sounding like a question, but it did. Rin felt her cheeks heat with mild embarrassment, and the mention of the tuna cans was met with a hasty denial.
"N-no!" she stammered, shaking her head. "I don't know who does it, and whilst I know they probably mean well, I kinda wish they wouldn't? There's an animal shelter not that far away, and, well, I'd rather the strays were staying at the shelter. Better chance of them finding a nice family there, but..." Rin shrugged, cradling the cat in her arms, and hiding her blush in Kuri's voluminous fur. "I'm glad they don't go hungry... it just makes it harder for the shelter staff, sometimes."
"And then you get little gluttons like Kuri here," she presented the cat with some flourish to the other girl, hoping that he'd behave himself, but ready to pull him away should he have a go at the fish girl. "Who is treated well, and one might even say he is spoilt," the cat mewed happily, as if in agreement, "who should really be put on a diet because he keeps sneaking out to nom on tins of tuna that are not meant for him. I don't know how he got out today; Shozo's usually really careful about making sure Kuri's inside before he heads out. But it is a nice day, so maybe Mother cracked a window open before heading to work, and he wriggled out through that?"
She was going to have to escort the little escapee home, eventually. But she also had the donations to deliver to the shelter, and she ought to do that before returning to the apartment block. Whilst she thought Mrs. Shotaro would understand her actions, that didn't mean Rin wanted to test her theory and head home without having completed the task she had promised to do. "I... sometimes help out at the animal shelter," she admitted, nodding to the pet supplies she had on hand. "Today was meant to be a simple delivery of donated goods, but it looked like you needed a hand. I don't think anyone'll mind a few missing toys and cans, if it, ah, prevents death by murderous fluffiness."
She cracked a shy smile, looking over the collection of felines and scattered supplies. The cats seemed happy with the offering she had made, and they weren't bothering the fish girl, so that was a win, right?
"...Would you like to come to the shelter? I need to drop these things off, and I probably shouldn't let Kuri wander off, so I need to bring him along. I-It would help to have another set of hands. I-If that's okay with you? The staff might let us play with the kittens and puppies if the day's been quiet; it's good socialising for them, I'm told."

The offhand comment had been the only hint of Sigga’s foreign background. Her spoken Japanese was flawless, despite having lived for most of her life in America. Japanese had been the first langue she learned back when she still had a mother. And the girl had technically been born in Hokkaido, so how foreign she really was could be debated at length. At least until she reached the ripe old age of twenty-two she’d be able to continue to be the semi-proud holder of dual citizenships. Having to eventually give up her claim on one of her nationalities was definitely an aggravating topic but like many her age in her circumstance, Sigga decided to put off thinking about such difficult decisions for several years.
The fish finally got to her feet, dusting herself off. Though the feline ambush had, in the end, proven unsuccessful her fashionably torn up grey shirt could easily have suggested the tale ended under different circumstances. None of it was really her fault and though the bald student was grateful for the other girl’s help she was feeling a little bashful in offering a thank you outright.
It was a little surprising to find that her rescuer, or hero if you like, was not the one responsible for feeding that first group of cats she had come across. The strange girl certainly seemed well equipped for such a task. Sigga’s amber eyes followed the girl as she brandished one of the felines towards the fish, listening to the rather diplomatic explanation of why she didn’t approve of the cats being fed in the manner they were. There was, of course, also a plethora of other reasons one shouldn’t go around feeding strays not mentioned.
Sigga didn’t take the domesticated animal, but did offer Kuri a quick scratch on the chin. The bald fish was still feeling a little warry of the animals, not knowing how long this impromptu armistice would last. Her gaze kept darting back to the cats. You never knew when a second barrage would be inbound.
She pursed her lips, cheeks reddening when the other girl mentioned Sigga looking like she had needed a hand. A head-fin involuntarily twitched. She did not like the feeling of being indebted to others. It made her feel vulnerable. Whether due to some shrewd manipulation technique or maybe even knowingly giving the piscine victim a chance to neutralize the discomfort brought up by the social rule of reciprocation, the teen was given an opportunity to neutralize said discomfort.
When it came to manipulating people Sigga was rather knowledgeable. Though most of her enlightenment in the field was specific by way of deceit, you’d be hard pressed to convince the sly fish to do something without her realizing what social techniques were being utilized. The thing with the rule of reciprocation was that it often work even if the target was fully aware that it was being used. Whether the blue-haired girl had intended to put Sigga in this position was entirely irrelevant. Or, at least, the bald girl wasn’t taking motive into account when making her decision. It was reasonable to assume the cats would keep their distance if she stuck to the other girl, safety in numbers and all that, and if she could neutralize the feeling of debt at the same time then that would be the course to take. There… was also the fact that one too many turns in the pursuit had thrown her mental compass out of whack and she no longer had any idea where she was in relation to the UA campus, but that was a problem whose resolution she’d broach later. First thing’s first.
“Of course!” Sigga chimed in with a bubbly eagerness that seemed to contradict her body’s feeling of exhaustion. Her muscles had been given minimal time to recuperate, but as long as there wouldn’t be any more sprinting involved she needn’t worry about passing out. Also seeing an animal shelter. That. That was a thing she wanted to do.
The UA student side-stepped the felines still milling about the boxes. Many of them seemed to have found new objects of interest, though occasionally a pair of slit pupils would turn her way. Sigga was bending down to pick up the boxes when one of the fluffies poked its head out from beneath the lid and leapt onto the pavement, cat-toy in teeth. It seemed like going for a ride was not on the neko’s agenda. This time the fish checked to make sure there we no other unwitting cats or kittens in the boxes before grabbing hold and lifting the tower and obscuring her own view. A single amber eye poked out from behind the containers, looking expectantly at the gold eyes of her savior.

"Ah, really? Brilliant!"
Rin hadn't expected such ready agreement, given what she'd just 'rescued' the aquatic girl from. Perhaps it was the potential of puppies upon completion of the task? It was hard to imagine that those of a more canine persuasion would be as eager to munch on the girl. Assuming that it was her fish-like qualities that had encouraged their hunt in the first place. It wasn't polite to make assumptions, but the few facts Rin had thus far... It was probably the fishiness of her companion that had the felines trying to eat her. The strays usually wouldn't leave their tuna dinner behind, unless a better meal came along.
And no, she was not going to let her mind wander any further down that particular path of logic.
Whilst her fellow human gathered the boxes, Rin collected the toys, dusting off any that the cats had taken, and subsequently abandoned when other things caught their attention. The feline attention span was a wonder, truly. It either lasted forever, or shifted to something new every few seconds. Gathering everything was a challenge whilst she held Kuri to her chest, least her brother's cat run off again. She still wanted to know how he'd even gotten out, but that was a matter for later consideration. Kuri's indignant meow when placed in one of the bags did earn a giggle from the bluenette, and she happily scritched under his chin when he poked his adorable head out of the bag.
"You stay put," she scolded gently, and was rewarded with a mew of agreement. At least, that was what she hoped it was. Kuri could be planning his inevitable escape - Rin didn't speak cat, so she had no way of knowing. The fluffy grey menace seemed content to ride along in the bag for now, however.
"Hmm," Rin paused momentarily at the alleyway's entrance, gathering her bearings. The new apartment was to the south, and the demolished zone that had been home for most of her childhood was to the north-east, so that currently put them... south, south-west of the shelter, right? Right. If they headed north along the road, and then took a couple of side-streets... "It should take us fifteen minutes to get to the shelter from here. If the boxes are getting to be too much to manage, let me know, and we can swap what we're carrying, okay?"
Rin headed off, measuring her steps carefully. When alone, she was quite a fast walker - and that was assuming she didn't start taking shortcuts across the rooftops. But she had company right now, so she kept her pace deliberately slow and steady, walking only a little ahead of the fish girl so that she could provide direction. It was... nice, to have company as she strolled through her neighborhood.
"You're a UA student, yeah?" Quiet companionship was all well and good, but Rin wasn't always very good at being quiet. Indeed, she was quite chatty when nervous, and bringing a relative stranger to one of her sanctums was just a little nerve-wracking. Perhaps the fish girl could be less of a stranger by the time they arrived.
".Ack! ..I didn't introduce myself, early! I'm sorry! Rin Takeshi - it's a pleasure to meet you!"

Sigga would continue craning her head around the edge of the stack of boxes she was now carrying, eyes surveying the ground ahead so as not to trip over any obstacles. She also made sure not to lose track of her blue-haired guide, though on occasion the fish’s head would vanish back behind the boxes when it was busy spinning around to make sure no new feline clowder was forming nearby. You could never be too careful.
Technically the piscine did have one leading theory on why some of her encounters with cats have been so catastrophic. Well… actually it was more of a hypothesis, but one Sigga felt quite confident any other sane observer of her feline-inclined misadventures would have come to as well. It was quite clear; obvious really. A situation born of an event when a large number of cats congregated in a single location. They. Became. A hive-mind. There’s no disputing this. How else would one ascribe this otherwise inexplicable behavior? This- this conformity in action of a clearly unified innumerably-pawed consciousness?? The fish was almost certain of it. She hadn’t shared her thoughts on the subject with anyone yet, though. Not with anyone that would listen anyway. Back in the U.S. of A. she had told her foster-sisters of her suspicions only to be given very strange looks. It’s not like her sisters weren’t understanding or sympathetic. They just didn’t have Sigga’s… imaginative reasoning.
From behind the stack of boxes, Sigga muttered some sort of muffled affirmative to the other girl. Carrying all of these animal-wares for fifteen minutes might not sound like much work, but if she started to feel any strain in her arms she’d be certain to take up the bluenette's offer to swap. Now knowing the length of their walk Sigga shifted the weight of the boxes so they leaned into her more, easing some of the tension in her hands and arms.
Upon being asked if she was a UA student, Sigga blurted an “Uh, yeah,” before her mouth could stop itself. She wasn’t embarrassed or anything. Just cautious. Or at least she was usually. You never knew what kind of rabble might try targeting her simply from the fact she attended a high school that boasted the best heroics education in the country. Of course anyone local to Musutafu could easily identify the pleated skirt Sigga was wearing, even in absence of the rest of her uniform. So whatever intent the bald student had in being cautious she was rather inattentive in it.
The sudden introduction brought Sigga’s craning head back into view, one twitching fin and an amber eye looking back at her rescuer. “Takeshi-san,” she echoed, committing the name to memory. Then replied back with a “Sigrid Tendō,” and “Likewise.” A strange name in these parts. At least her given name was, surname notwithstanding. Most Japanese students didn’t have Scandinavian first names, but then Sigga’s certainly wasn’t most students.

Sigrid ...Tendō? Quite the unusual combination of names, and several of Rin's presumptions shifted with the new information. Perhaps the fishy girl was not a foreigner after all, though with a first name such as 'Sigrid' someone in her family must have international origins. Or, perhaps they were simply very fond of other countries? Extremely fond, if they were using non-Japanese naming for their daughter! Or, perhaps Tendō-san was adopted? Rin wasn't quite sure how the adoption process for humans worked, only that it did, and that it was, presumably, more complex than the process of adopting animals from the shelter. That could also explain the intriguing naming convention that seemed to apply to her new-found friend. She wanted to ask, but it seemed a rather sensitive and impolite topic to discuss with someone she had only just met. Rin's curiousity would simply have to wait until they were better acquainted.
"Tendō, Tendō..." Rin muttered to herself, trying to place the name. Definitely not General Studies, and she was pretty sure the name didn't belong to anyone in the Support courses, either.
"...Are you in the Hero Course?" The tentative question came after several moments of deliberation. Some people, they enjoyed bragging about becoming heroes, and you could never get them to shut up. Whilst Rin didn't believe Sigrid was of such a boastful nature, she hadn't known the piscine girl for more than half an hour, so she couldn't assume that she had the measure of Sigrid's personality. Alternatively, some people, herself included, didn't particularly care to advertise their desire to become Heroes.
"I-It's just... I'm in General Studies, and, well, I don't really get much of a chance to chat with anyone in the Hero track, and... ...I'm going to shut up now. Sorry. I-I'm not... really good with people. U-Unless I'm trying to patch them up. Sensei says my bedside manner is terrible, but that's okay, 'cause we're at UA to better ourselves. By the time we graduate, I'll be... well, maybe not good at socializing with humans, but... better." Rin gave a nervous laugh.
Kuri chose that particular moment to poke his tail out of the bag he was being carried in, soft fur tickling her fingertips and earning a more genuine giggle from Rin. His meow seemed to hold a reassuring note, as if the cat had no doubt at all in Rin's ability to achieve her goals, whatever they might be. A shy smile tugged on the corners of Rin's lips.
"Animals are easier to understand, sometimes. When they're angry, they show you, and when they're scared, it's all in their body language. People... aren't so easy to read. I'm never sure of when I'm being annoying."

The circumstances surrounding Sigga’s naming and birth happened to be a little more convoluted than Rin guessed, though her suspicions weren’t entirely off the mark either. It just so happened that said circumstances were also out of the purview of the student in question. Now that the bald girl had a blood-relative as her guardian once again it would be shrewd of her to take advantage and learn a bit of her family history. Well, if such a thought even occurred to the fish.
Sigga continued peeking out from behind the stack of boxes she carried. Her eye shifted between checking for any booby-traps set by felines lying in the road back to her guide, curious as to what musings were responsible for the rhythmic chanting of her surname.
“Uh-” It was too late to make something up at this point. Sigga had already admitted to which school she attended. And with Takeshi-san remarking that she too went to UA, any lie the finned teenager came up with at this point would eventually be discovered as deceit. Why she even considered lying at this point was likely a matter of habit. One that Sigga hadn’t taken any effort in overcoming just yet.
“Uhhh,” Sigga echoed again, like a broken garage door impersonator. “Yeah, I’m in the Hero Course...” Though a mark of pride for many, Sigga was not among those that would boast of her enrollment. She was a pretender; a fraud amongst many talented lions as her case officer was known to remind her. Finding herself back in Japan and attending UA was a mixture of a fluke and practical joke being played on her by destiny. The former con’s only reason for finding herself in such a situation was the same as it had always been. It was a matter of survival. She wondered what exactly gave her away. Curious.
The bald teen allowed her blue-haired peer to continue talking herself through some awkward dialogue. She barely even noticed the stuttering, so distracted was the fish with thoughts of her own shortcomings. She shifted the weight of the boxes over, trying her best not to appear to be struggling. It wasn’t the weight so much as it was the size that made them cumbersome. And the hero student wasn’t exactly known for her physical prowess in any case.
“I donno. Most people seem pretty transparent to me.” The truth. And having little to do with her Quirk. Well, maybe not little. Having first-hand experience in seeing how others processed their thoughts had given her at least some degree of understanding into the human psyche. Whether she utilized that aspect of her Quirk or not, Sigga had plenty of experience reading people, and even more in deceiving them. “-even the ones that don’t necessarily spill all their thoughts as they think them.” Telltale crows feet forming at the corners of her amber orbs gave away the grin the joker wore behind the boxes. Nothing like injecting some topical humor to lighten things up.
“Animals, though…?” She glanced at the furry periscope scanning the horizon from inside the bag Run carried, “I’m not so sure...”
