WORD COUNT 243
| The Black Cat Cafe, to the uninitiated, was the last place that they would expect to see a scarred schoolboy wander into. It was obscure to an almost ridiculous degree, hidden behind a maze of alleys and narrow paths, each twisting and turning like a location straight from an M.C. Escher painting. Without something to guide them - or just good old memory - there was little to assure people looking for it that they'd even come close to finding that elusive locale. And that was to say nothing of what lurked behind the unassuming oaken door, and the plain sign of a black cat attached above the entrance.
A dark, hardwood floor creaked underneath as the blonde stepped past the threshold, earning a quick glance from those who recognised him as a regular. Lit by the gentle glow of what natural light was allowed in through the front windows, the man standing behind the counter nodded to him in greeting, to which Hyousuke responded with a slight smile. "The usual?" Hyousuke was asked, curtly, but without any rude intent. "Yeah, please." He said back, earning another swift nod. A slice of cake was passed out to from behind the counter - a section of sponge as unassuming as the small, white plate it sat on.
Still dressed in his uniform, Hyousuke took a seat near the back of the cafe, idly picking at the cake with a fork while he waited for his coffee. |

Aki didn't barrel through the door of the Black Cat Café. That would have been unsightly. He brisk-walked through it, which was much less unseemly. "Hey, hi, hello," he greeted, voice bursting bright, clear, and unwelcome into the quiet of the café, turning around to amble to the counter as if he didn't scuff his shoes against the hardwood floor in his haste to get in only a moment prior. A few regulars who recognised him snorted, rolling their eyes.
It was reactions like that that kept him coming to the café. He'd found it on a day not unlike this one: stumbling in while trying to shake off a rogue, camera-wielding vulture, to patrons who didn't even bat an eye at his grand entrance. He wasn't sure which was it: whether the shop just happened to attract the specific sort of clientele that didn't know him, or clientele just didn't care. Either way, he revelled in his anonymity. It was his little hidey-hole, though he doubted the owner would appreciate him calling it that. The vultures never found him while he was here.
Still, it never hurt to be cautious. He leaned a hip against the counter, and flashed a smile at the man standing behind it. "If a man in a red flannel shirt and a DSLR walks in here, tell him you're all sold out for the day, please? I'll tip really well today," he said, watching as bemusement, amusement, and then acquiescence swirled across the man's face. "Oh, and I'll have the usual, thank you."
As his pot of peppermint tea brewed, Aki chanced a look at his usual spot, and was dismayed to find it occupied. That table was his favourite -- tucked away near the back, neatly hidden from view of the front window by a support beam. He could sit elsewhere, but there was an empty seat at the table; from here, he thought he recognised the distinct colour and cut of UA's uniform on the table's sole occupant. He scanned the other vacant seats, and weighed his options.
Sliding a wad of notes across the counter -- the promised hefty tip a part of the payment -- he hefted his tray of tea and lemon shortbread into his arms, and sauntered down the length of the shop to the table near the back. Let the tray come to a rest on the table's surface, with the resonant click of wood against wood. Flashed yet another sunshine-bright smile at the boy seated across from him.
"Hello, schoolmate. I'm going to sit here, if you don't mind." Aki pulled the chair back, and slid into the seat without waiting for Hyousuke's response. "You can have some of my biscuits, if you'd like."

WORD COUNT 307
| Hyousuke couldn't keep a slight scowl from flashing across his face. This was his quiet place - somewhere that he could go to be alone, where people didn't judge him, or expect anything from him but his money and to keep quiet. Someone waltzing in and taking a seat in front of him with that sunshine-bright smile and cheery demeanour was, of course, not going to go over well with him. Still, he had an image to uphold, and as quickly as the expression appeared on his face, he changed it to something more like surprise.
"Thanks, but I'll pass." He said, his casual tone laced by something resembling gruffness. "It doesn't really go with the coffee." As if on cue, his own drink arrived. Coffee - just a shade away from black, it had only a small splash of creamer added in to take off the edge. Though undeniably bitter, its taste had some undertones of gentleness to it. Despite his apparent annoyance with the stranger showing up, however, Hyousuke could hardly stop himself from going on about sweets - one of his few passions in life, as it happened.
"I like the contrast." He began, taking a sip from the mug, and setting it back down. "This sponge doesn't really have a powerful flavour like chocolate, and it isn't sharp and sweet like strawberry. Some might call it plain, but I think it's just subtle. Which makes it good for something as bitter as-" He stopped himself as he realised he was rambling, but it was too late. The place had made him put his guard down, and the topic of sweets had been the thing to draw that side of him out. There was no hiding it, no matter how he tried. "Never mind that though. I'm Hyousuke, from 1-A. Don't think I've seen you around before." |

"As bitter as coffee?" Aki finished Hyousuke trailed off, voice lilting upwards, amusement plain in his tone. "Quite the connoisseur, aren't you? I've never had the palate for those sorts of flavours. I'm more of a tea person, myself." As if to demonstrate, he reached for his cup of tea, and took a ginger sip. Steam wafted over his face, carrying the minty-sweet scent of peppermint. His tongue smarted; it was still too hot to drink. He put it back down on the saucer.
Crossing his arms over the table, he rested his weight on his elbows, leaning forward to peer at Hyousuke with interest. He'd caught the flash of scorn flitting over Hyousuke's face when he sat down, but the boy had schooled his features into something more presentable quick enough. And, he hadn't chased him off yet -- had, in fact, gone on an unprompted spiel about his sponge cake. (That had to be some good cake; he made a note to try it the next time he was here.) Aki was right on the money about this café's clientele: Hyousuke really didn't seem to recognise him. Oh, how he loved the Black Cat Café.
"Aki, from 1-I. Hero management." He flapped a dismissive, gloved hand, shrugging. "Our classes don't run in the same social circles. Or on the same syllabus."
There were more overlaps between the General Studies course and the Hero Studies course than there were for Hero Management and any other course -- unless the other students suddenly took to studying venture capital. From what he heard, his course was a barely a presence in the school's annual sports festival. Not that it mattered to Aki; he'd never been one for boisterous festivities, and sports days weren't typically a thing when you were homeschooled.
"So, what's a Hero course student like you doing all the way out here? Don't you have, hm -- " He twirled a finger in the air, contemplative. " -- things to punch? I'm not too familiar with your curriculum."

WORD COUNT 206
| That dismissive flip of AKi's glove rubbed Hyousuke the wrong way, for a reason he couldn't quite place. He chalked it up to just being shaken from having someone talk to him in a place where someone wouldn't normally do much more than glance towards him as he walked through the door - if that - but still, it lingered in the back of his mind. He decided to ignore it until there was time to ponder it, though, and refocussed his attention back on Aki himself, rather than the twirling of his fingers. Hyousuke offered a slight smirk at the remark, and returned with a dismissive wave of his own.
"Give us some credit - we kick and shoot things too." Though far from being one of UA's best or brightest, he could still manage some quick retorts at the very least. "Besides, there any reason I shouldn't be here? I like the coffee here better than the freeze-dried rubbish they try to sell you everywhere else, and here, I can drink it in peace." He paused to take a sip, glanced over at Aki, and continued. "Most of the time. Doesn't explain what you're doing here though. You get finished with pulling PR stunts for the day?" |

Hyousuke's retort drew a huff of laughter from Aki. The sponge cake spiel had Aki worried, for a moment, that he had chosen to sit by an oddball, but his seatmate's veiled barb showed that he knew how to think on his feet -- and wasn't afraid to bite back. Tea and conversation; delightful.
He responded to Hyousuke's smirk with a smile of his own, close-mouthed and small, its edges a tad sharper than before. "Oh, you know how it is." He gestured vaguely with one free hand, at nothing in particular. "Reading up about the intricacies of property damage insurance claims is backbreaking work, not to mention what staring at Legalese all day does to your eyes. The dryness is a nightmare."
"So, don't let me get in the way of your -- what was it? ah -- peace too much. I'm here for the same reasons as you. Just a breather."
Strictly speaking, what Aki said was mostly half-truths. He was taking a breather from his books. There just happened to be a little something extra thrown in. Hooking his fingers around the handle of his cup, he ended his statement by taking a languid sip of tea, sneaking a furtive glance at the entrance from behind the rim of his teacup -- gaze sliding to the door that had remained blissfully shut since his unceremonious arrival, before returning swiftly to Hyousuke, in patient anticipation of his reply.

WORD COUNT 212
| The age-old barb of heroes causing more damage than they were really worth. Her had to admit, Aki wasn't wrong - even with the various laws and legislations in place, there was still no shortage of people that didn't seem to care about what kind of havoc they were wreaking, or simply viewed the collateral damage as an inevitability rather than something to be avoided. "If you're sick of handling all that, you're more than welcome to come work fro me when you're out of here. Trust me, it isn't going to be a problem for me." What he neglected to mention was that with how weak his Quirk was, the most property damage he was going to be managing was kicking down a rotting wooden shack.
"Strange that I haven't seen you around here though." He remarked softly, wanting to keep his tone quiet for the cafe's other patrons' sakes. They didn't come there to hear two students prattle on about whatever came to mind, after all. "This isn't exactly some mainstream chain. Takes a lot of work to even hear about this place, and then you've actually got to find it. If we're both regulars, we should've at least seen each other once during all the time we've been in here." |

Work for him? Aki bit back a snort. He was no clairvoyant, but he was sure that "working for a no-name, freshly-graduated hero" wasn't a cell in any of his mother's spreadsheets, unless she happened to have one titled "Reasons to Disown Li Bin Bin". Still, there was something in the way Hyousuke phrased his sentence, the confidence with which he said it wouldn't be a problem for him, that gave Aki some pause. For a second, he considered pushing the issue, but decided he had no intention of unleashing the entire Spanish Inquisition on Hyousuke. It seemed more trouble than it was worth.
Though, it seemed Hyousuke had no such reservations.
"I thought this was teatime, not an interrogation." Aki dropped his tone to match Hyousuke's, pulling his teacup away from his face so his voice wasn't muffled into it. He shrugged again, careful not to jostle his tea. "Maybe we never crossed paths. Maybe we just never saw each other while we were here. You don't scrutinise everyone who walks in here for coffee, do you?" Aki didn't come to the Black Cat Café to be seen, and he suspected it was the same for Hyousuke. Until today, he had kept to himself when he came to café. He had had no reason to hobnob with the other patrons.
"And, I don't tend to leave UA while still wearing my uniform," he said, mouth twisted in a moue of distaste, flicking an errant lock of hair out of his face with a pinky.
It was more than just unfashionable. (Which it was, the cut of the men's uniform absolutely unflattering on all but the most fortunate figures.) It was a beacon, yelling "Look at me!" out into the open streets. He had recognised it on sight when he saw Hyousuke earlier, even from a distance. Aki had been recognised on sight, when he left for the convenience store down the road earlier in the day, complacent in the belief that it would only take five minutes, no biggie.
Hyousuke Suzuki i realised that i never established what aki was wearing earlier;; can we just... retrospectively assume he was in his uniform this whole time? orz

| The proposal was a joke, more than anything. As academically challenged as he was, in many regards, Hyousuke at least understood that he wouldn't be worth working for right out the door - indeed, chances were, he'd be under the watchful eye of some other hero's agent, if he was seen as important enough to have one keep watch over his antics in the first place. Still, he was happy enough to entertain the thought - having someone 'manage his brand' and 'promote synergy,' or whatever buzzwords marketers used, was something that amused him enough to leave a small smile on his face.
"You know," Hyousuke began, idly tilting his cup once he was certain that Aki had finished speaking. "That's the first time I've heard anyone call me trying to make conversation and interrogation. I know I'm probably not the best company, but I didn't think I was that bad." A quiet chuckle escaped him, and he refocussed his attention back on Aki. "You got a point though. I don't think anyone comes here to be the centre of attention." Hyousuke certainly didn't. Truth be told, the only reason he'd come in his uniform was that it was the only set of clean clothes he had - having come straight out of training, it was either sweat gym clothes, or something that looked at least a little smart.
"Still, there's worse things to be caught wearing than this." |

Cocking his head to the side, Aki peered at Hyousuke, squinting slightly, assessing. Satisfied with whatever he saw, he leaned back in his chair. "The uniform isn't unsalvageable," he conceded mildly, the way someone would say "Susan's chocolate cake was, at least, edible".
"And don't be too hard on yourself. You've been a sparkling conversationalist. You haven't put me to sleep, yet -- that counts for something," Aki said, his tone placid, even as the edges of his lips curled upwards in a playful smirk. "I didn't expect you to launch an inquiry into my comings-and-goings from this café, is all."
He picked up a piece of shortbread, balancing it gingerly between the tips of his index finger and thumb, trying not to get any of the sugared glaze on his glove. His eyes drifted downwards, to the coffee swirling around in Hyousuke's cup. "To continue the conversation you so considerately started: I come here because it's hard to find." He nibbled at a corner of the biscuit, the citrus-sweet flavour bursting over his tongue. "And, the biscuits are good."
"It's only polite to share information if you're soliciting it. How did you -- " he pointed his biscuit in Hyousuke's general direction, shaking a few crumbs loose into the plate beneath it " -- find this place? There isn't a secret information-sharing network of sponge cake connoisseurs, is there?"

| Aki had a very high opinion of himself, or so it seemed. Something that Hyousuke could respect, in some capacity. His own expression took on a playful hint the more their conversation continued, their banter not failing to put a cheeky smirk on his face. Though he'd come to the cafe for peace, he had to admit, something like this wasn't bad once in a while. As long as it was quiet enough to keep the other patrons from being disturbed as well, anyway. He hardly wanted to get kicked out of one of the few places he could truly be at ease.
"Sorry, but my story's not quite as glamorous as yours." Hyousuke began, once more picking idly at the slice of sponge that sat before him. He didn't eat, but still cut a section from it with the edge of the fork, wanting something to do with his hands. "I was trying to find something else when I took a wrong turn. Turns out, if you get one direction wrong but still follow the rest of them, you end up somewhere completely different." He popped a small piece into his mouth, but swallowed it quickly to keep talking without breaking flow much. "Basically, I got here by accident. Not the worst place to end up at after a wrong turn though." |

Before U.A., it wasn't often that he had the chance to interact with peers his age with no strings attached. It was always with children of other socialites, who invariably wanted something from him; or, photographers and stylists at his jobs, who needed him to do something; or, his parents' underlings, who about never said anything. Suspended in the perpetual orbit of apathetic acquaintances who had better things to do then entertain him, banter like this was rare. Seeing that shade of playfulness creep into Hyousuke's expression was... new. Nice, even.
Not that Aki would admit to any of that, of course.
"You're in a not the worst place, wearing something that is also not the worst," Aki said, arching an eyebrow. "Just a bundle of happy accidents, aren't you?"
He paused to take another nibble out of his shortbread, and continued, a little less acerbically: "Though, I don't have much right to criticise you on that front. I stumbled across this place by accident, too."
"It is a bit disappointing to find out that there isn't a secret enclave of sponge cake connoisseurs, though." He sighed heavily, all put-upon mock-disappointment. "And here I was, hoping I could wheedle my way into an invitation."

WORD COUNT 191
| Socialising was a constant effort to keep up a facade for Hyousuke. An struggle to appear smarter than he was, stronger than he felt. But there was something about the Black Cat Cafe that brought out something else in him. Rather than that boisterous and brash hero that gallivanted about the place in search of strength, he could just sit back and relax. He didn't need to put up a front when he was in the cafe, and could just present himself as he was - someone that just wanted to take a moment to enjoy his coffee and cake. Maybe in peace, maybe with a someone he knew.
"Sorry to disappoint," He returned, wearing that playful expression as easily as though it were a glove, "But you're just going to have to settle for me." Hyousuke shrugged idly, and went back to what remained of his order, taking it slow so that he could savour the remnants. "Besides, what makes you think I'd let you into a secret society if I was even in one? How do I know you're not some spy from a secret organisation of savoury snack lovers?" |

"Ohoh?" The disappointment on Aki's face slid off, replaced by an expression of open-mouthed, over-the-top surprise. He peppered in a gasp for dramatic effect. "It seems you've uncovered my dark secret. This shortbread here is, in fact, a... ham sandwich." He took a larger-than-before bite of his shortbread, chewed with deliberate, pensive slowness, swallowed with just as much deliberate intent. "It has a delightfully umami flavour."
He gestured at his plate, where one last lone piece of shortbread lay in its center, ringed by crumbs. "You ought to give it a try -- perhaps I could tempt you into joining my coven of heretics."
Retrospectively, maybe he had been over-ambitious with that mouthful. As he talked, Aki could feel the glaze sticking to the roof of his mouth, sharp and sweet down the back his throat. He reached for his tea, taking quick gulp in attempt to wash it down, and was genuinely surprised to find that it had gone lukewarm. So soon? He flicked his eyes upwards, glancing at the clock hanging above the counter.
He had gotten a tad carried away with their conversation, it seemed.

| Mock disgust filled Hyousuke's face as AKi joked, his face screwing up and his lips drawing into a pout. "I've never felt so betrayed." He stated flatly, shaking his head at Aki's "confession," and finishing the last of his (nearing tepid) coffee. He regretted that it'd been left so long, but supposed that it was more than made up for by having made a new friend. Or, at least, someone he presumed was a new friend. He didn't want to assume that just because someone was being polite enough to put up with him that they were willing to do so on a regular basis.
When Aki looked over to the clock, Hyousuke followed his gaze, curious about how logn had actually passed. He'd not actually kept track - usually, his outings to the cafe took about the same time every time, and he'd stopped bothering trying to keep a schedule for it. He cocked a brow upon seeing just how much time had passed since Aki had sat down with him, and set his fork down on an empty plate - it seemed like he wanted to get going. "As much as I'd like to get brainwashed into worshipping ramen as my new Lord and saviour, I really need to get going if I'm going to make it home before it gets late. That, and I've finished my cake." |
