| Stores that sold hiking gear were far from uncommon. While certainly not as ubiquitous as some other outlets, it wasn’t like there was any shortage of places that sold what Hyousuke needed. The problem lay in what the stores offered, and for what price. While some would just take the extra cost on the chin and wave it off as them wanting to save time and effort, Hyousuke was a student, and therefore not in a position to spend more money on such expensive things than he had to. And as far as shoes went, hiking boots weren’t exactly cheap.
Clad in a rather uninspired ensemble - a forest green tee with jeans and grey trainers - he mumbled to himself, once more scrolling through the list of shops he’d brought up on his phone. Some local ones, some chain stores - most of them located in the same shopping centre, thankfully enough. It was just going to be a pain in the neck to spend the day traipsing around the place, given how crowded it was at the best of times. The fact that the stores were so scattered certainly didn’t help much, and part of him was tempted to just grab the first pair he could find and leave. But, as he looked down at his wallet, he reminded himself he wasn’t in a position to do that.
By no means was he poor, and worst case scenario, he would have to ask his parents for help. It was more that he couldn’t justify spending so much when he could potentially save a decent portion of his budget by putting in the effort for it. Infinite though his physical energy could be, his mental energy was a different matter altogether. |

In the age of internet sales, local stores that tried to specialize were few and far between. Almost every store occupied a space shared by multiple facades, and each of those facades advertised multiple products. The entire economic enterprise had been intentionally designed to have you seeing as many high-margin items as possible, in hopes of tempting you towards buying the things that weren't on your shopping list but were nevertheless going to turn a profit for the stores in question.
Of course, that didn't mean that like things weren't clumped together -- and that is exactly what Chiura had been counting on. She slithered nervously between baffled and quite frankly frightened customers, doing her best to smile and apologetically wave to each one. Much to her chagrin, though, she couldn't help but notice more than a few of them flinch away at the sight of her fangs. How frustrating, she thought, that even the most innocuous of gestures carried an inherent threat. A pointed tooth, a split tongue -- that was all it took to set the average human on edge.
She was so preoccupied with the particularly dirty look that she had just been afforded by one grey-suited salaryman that she didn't even notice the blonde-haired youth from her school; at least, not until she bumped directly into him, slithering with impressive force and crashing her face into his shoulder. "Ah! Sorry, sorry! Please excuse -- OH!" She blinked off her disorientation, her look of apology turning to one of surprise (and then more apology in due course). "Suzuki-san! Are you shoe shopping?" She gestured vaguely towards the shoe outlet that they both stood outside of.

| The sudden collision with his shoulder startled Hyousuke - though he moved, it was more out of surprise than it was actual force. The slightly surprised expression on his face was replaced with a calmer, more pleasant one when he recognised who it was that had actually pranged into him. The company of a friend was always welcome, that day even more so - if she wanted to tag along, it'd help break up the monotony of hauling himself around the place. "Oh, Yutsuko-san. Yeah, looks like you caught me - I'm looking for a new pair of boots. I was planning on going hiking again soon, but the shoes I've got now wouldn't last halfway up the trail."
He paused for a moment, until a thought occurred to him. "What about you? You here for anything in particular?" Given her Quirk, he suspected that she probably wasn't there to buy a pair of boots like he was. His curiosity aside, he figured it would be best to ask her about it before he asked her if she wanted to wander about the place looking at things she might not even have had much interest in. Much as he didn't want to be bored, he didn't want to drag her into it as well. |

Housuke's question was a perfectly reasonable one, and yet here Chiura was stammering her way through an attempted answer. "Oh, w-well, you ssssee -- it's. As it happens..." The woman made a vague gesture towards her lower half, her tongue placidly flickering from between her lips as she pondered how best to explain. Ultimately, she decided on a simple, two-word explanation. "Sssshoe polish,"[/q] she said with a nervous little giggle, as if that would explain away her presence in its entirety.
"Still! That won't take me more than a few minutes at the end to grab. I'll just follow you until then -- if you don't mind the company, that is?" Her smile shifted to one of tentative hope; she would like the company. It was easier, she thought, to navigate these sorts of places when you were with someone else -- like it lended a monster like her an air of mundane human legitimacy.
She thought for a moment on Hyousuke's goal; she had never been hiking before, though it made sense to her that special equipment might be required. She had always enjoyed mountains, but had never had much of an opportunity to explore them; the thought of the young blonde geared up in rugged leathers and glistening in the midday sun with the requisite effort of mountain climbing entered the back of her mind and took up residence. Her pulse quickened, but she dismissed the thought a few moments later. Still, it would return every so often as the two talked, in moments of quiet repose between sentences.

WORD COUNT 314
| On some level, Hyousuke more or less understood what she wanted it for. If his intuition was correct, she was going to put it on her scales, though for what reason eluded him. He supposed he could ask at some point, but that could wait until he wasn't busy trying to compare one pair of boots with another. He was sure that the quality of the chain store would be reliable enough for his needs - he wasn't exactly climbing Mount Everest, after all - but he needed to be certain that they would last him, and he wasn't spending more than he had to.
"Of course I don't mind." He said, a small smile giving the corners of his lips a slight upwards curve. "It'd be boring without you." Though he seemed quite calm about the whole thing, he was relieved beyond how he knew how to express that she'd asked to come along with him. The more he thought about it, the more he began to realise he couldn't actually think of an easy way to ask someone without any legs to come and look at footwear with him. "We're going to be going all over the place though, so don't worry if you want to duck out."
Much as he welcomed her company, he didn't want her to feel like she was obligated to stay with him. As far as he knew, the shoe polish - in all likelihood - was probably roundabout the same price anywhere she could get it, unless she was going for the high-end stuff. "Anyway, I'm gonna head inside. Got a lot of ground to cover, so we should get moving." He flashed her a slightly warmer look, and turned to head inside the shop. Knowing what he was looking for, he figured he wouldn't be long in each store - it was more the trek between each that he dreaded. |

Chiura wasn't sure why Hyousuke's words made her heart flutter. It was the sort of feeling she only really experienced when she was afraid. But she didn't feel afraid right now, did she? It was -- the same, but different. She couldn't quite place it, and so it was easier to simply shove it into the pit of her stomach where it belonged.
It seemed Hyousuke planned to make a day out of this particular excursion. It was a fair cry from Chiura's initial in-and-out intent, as far as plans went, but she wasn't dismayed at the notion. On the contrary, it seemed a pleasant enough distraction -- especially from the brimming anxiety of the impending sports festival, which had begun to dance at the corners of Chiura's mind like so many imposing candles flickering upon an ominous wind.
...Perhaps that was a bit dramatic, in terms of metaphors. Chiura chuckled to herself. It was just a sports festival, after all.
"You don't have to worry about me!" she chimed cheerfully, patting her massive tail with a hand extended back behind her. "Covering ground is my specialty. I just hope you don't get too tired, or I might have to carry you!" It was a decidedly weird thing to say; it had been meant as a joke, but Chiura worried that it came off threatening or worse intrusive. She shivered; damn it, girl, get a hold of yourself.
She slithered right behind the blonde-haired electrical dynamo, humming happily to herself as she followed. "Have you put a lot of thought into the sports festival yet?" she asked. Small talk would be nice; and she didn't have a lot to say about the subject matter of shoes, anyway.

WORD COUNT 448
| Being with friends - people that were actually friendly to him, and spending time with him because they wanted to - was something still new to Hyousuke. Much as he tried to get used to it, it still stirred a warm feeling deep inside him when someone was genuinely content with his company. Strange as it was, he liked it, and wanted to hold onto it, even if he wasn't entirely certain that he would be able to hold onto it for long. Perhaps she'd tire of him, or she'd steer clear of him once his arrogance and his aggression reared their ugly heads - but for the time being, he would enjoy it.
He looked behind him when she joked. It took him a second to process, but when he did, a warm smile was his response. "Me? Tired? Ha, that's a good one." His fist thumped lightly against his chest, and he seemed to completely ignore her shivering, if it had even been noticed at all. "That's what my Quirk's for. By the time I get tired, you probably wouldn't be in any state to carry me. Hell, I'd probably have to hold you instead." His smile flickered into a brief grin, and he turned back - not even considering the fact that his statement might have come off as rude or intrusive.
"As for the sports festiv-" Hyousuke cut himself off, spotting an employee that didn't seem to be otherwise occupied. "Excuse me, have you got these a size larger?" They said they'd check, and strode off to do so. Hyousuke, meanwhile, turned back to her. "Sorry about that. Honestly though? I haven't." His tone was relaxed - perhaps with a tinge of wistfulness, but it was slight at most. "I've been training harder, sure, but it's mostly technique at this point, and making sure I've got that down. Way I see it, if it's this close, there's not really any other kind of training I can do that'll make much of a difference."
Elbows against his knees as he sat down, he continued, eyes scanning slowly over the range of shoes in front of him. "You can't do much with how long we've got left. Anything that makes a difference takes months, maybe years, to show it. No use worrying about it at the last minute. Best you can do is just rush in there and give it your all." He caught himself at the end of his sentence, and his head seemed to slam downwards, cheeks glowing from embarrassment. Eager to move on, he shifted focus to her, his tone vaguely panicked. "Uh, but, well, that's not important. Not really. How about you? You doing anything for it?" |

Chiura frowned. "You're probably right," she agreed as she watched the boy speak with the store clerk. He had apologized for the interruption, which honestly seemed silly considering the reason he was even here. It was no interruption, she thought -- if anything, she was the one interrupting.
"Yeah, you're probably right." She repeated her confirmation with downturned lips and a little shake of the head that sent red strands of hair shimmering to and fro behind her. "But -- ugh, I don't know. I don't want you to be right. If there's really nothing I can do at this point, then I feel like I'm doomed to mediocrity. The sports festival is such a big deal! And I'm so..."
Weak. Unappealing. Lacking in versatility. Unmarketable. Not hero material. The words assaulted the inner recesses of her mind with a renewed vigor. They had been rearing their ugly heads with a greater frequency of late as the seminal school event approached, and she just couldn't seem to shake them.
Anyhow. She erased the worried frown from her face; no sense in letting this chance encounter turn sour. "I suppose if there's nothing to be done, then whatever happens will have been meant to happen. I just hope I can get out there and not make a complete fool of myself, yeah?" Despite her dour words, a little fire flickered in the pit of her stomach. She didn't want to be a fool or a scapegoat or a pratfalling has-been. She wanted to excel for once.

WORD COUNT 387
| "You? Doomed to mediocrity?" He said, after taking a moment to stare blankly, and process what she'd said. The disbelief in Hyousuke's voice, though somewhat restrained, was no less palpable. It showed on his face as well - he didn't expect to hear those words coming from anyone in 1-A, and she was no exception. "Give yourself some credit. You've got a Quirk that works, even without support gear. You're already doing better than about half your competition." The support course could use what they'd built themselves, but they hadn't the combat experience or training that the hero course did. And petitions weren't likely to succeed, unless the gear was absolutely integral to someone's Quirk's function. An independently powerful Quirk in that situation was a godsend.
The attendant emerged, bearing a pair of bigger boots - which Hyousuke dutifully took, and thanked him for. It was just as well too. He hadn't the foggiest on how to follow that up, and those shoes gave him precious seconds to think. "You're a lot better at this than you think you are." He said fiddling with the laces, and moving his toes about to better get acquainted with the footwear. He hesitated, wondering if it was his place to go on. If he wanted to speak more, if she even wanted to hear him speak more. Maybe she just needed to vent - or maybe she really did need encouragement. Despite his misgivings, he decided to continue - he'd never forgive himself if he didn't at least try to help one of the few friends he had. Even if she was just tolerating his presence out of kindness, he owed her.
"You wouldn't have got onto the course - or stayed on it - if you nobody thought you had potential. Yeah, there's going to be people saying you're not going to make it, but when isn't there?" His mind went briefly back to those who said he'd never make it into UA - and then again to those who said he'd never last long. Maybe they were right. Maybe it wasn't his place to think he could be a hero, and that his being at UA was a fluke. But whether it was determination, stubbornness, or sheer spite, he had long since resolved to stay as long as he could. "You'll be fine. Trust me." |

It wasn’t the gentle, encouraging admonition that took Chiura by surprise so much as the rapidity with which Hyousuke contested her claims. She stared for a moment in surprise and confusion; did he really think so highly of her? Of course, none of the things that he said were hard to sort out – and if she was being honest with herself, each of them was accurate in the strictest sense of the term. But then why did it all feel so ill-fitting? She chuckled inwardly as she watched Hyousuke fiddle with the new boots he had been brought. She wondered how he would like them.
”You’ve got a point,” she conceded. Chiura’s hands clasped themselves behind her head; she leaned back and stared up at the ceiling for a moment in a sort of distinctly serpentine posture that drew no small share of perplexed looks. One child pointed and loosed an audible ‘WOOW!’. Chiura ignored him. ”Potential is one thing, though. Making it into something is where I’m a bit more worried.” She smiled over at Hyousuke, giving him a cheesy little thumbs up. ”Why don’t we make a promise, then? We’ll both be fine. I’ll make sure you get to where you’re going if you keep an eye on me. We’re both gonna slither out of here as heroes, okay?” The deal was a little on the cheesy side as far as metaphorical contracts went, but the meaning behind the words still resonated with Chiura. It was important for her to remind herself, especially on days like today, that she had no obligation to get through all of this alone.

| While he couldn't resist glancing at her as she assumed a different pose, he diverted his eyes quickly back to the shoes, chiding himself silently for doing so. He didn't want people gawking and staring at the mark cutting across his eye any more than she wanted people looking at her for being born differently, he wagered - he could at least afford her the courtesy of not looking any longer than he had to for her. He wasn't quite sure how to balance it with looking at her enough to be polite while he was speaking, but supposed he could at least hide it by fiddling with his boots and pretending to see if they were right for him.
Cheesy though her proposed promise was, it was enough to draw a smile onto Hyousuke's face, and have him look towards her with an eager glint in his eyes. "Just don't expect me to go easy on you when we make it to the finals." He said, smirking at her, finally having stopped toying about with the shoes. They didn't feel quite right for him - as well as being a brand that he wasn't particularly fond of - but that wasn't his focus. "We've got to give everyone watching a good show, right?" |

Now, there was a frightening thought. Chiura had never really considered Hyousuke as a potential competitor in all of this. Naturally, it made sense -- that was the way all of these sports festivals tended to wind up, after all. Student versus student, quirk versus quirk. Still, Hyousuke's light-hearted response made Chiura shiver. "Y-Yeah," she said, her quirky spirit suddenly feeling stymied.
"H-Hey, Hyousuke-kun? Can... Can I talk to you about something personal?" A fear had been haunting Chiura for some time now; a sort of grim eventuality that she had been doing her best to ignore. She wasn't sure if this was the right moment or the right place or the right person with whom to address it -- in fact, she was relatively certain the entire arrangement in the present moment was suboptimal. Chiura, though, knew that she was rapidly approaching the point where she could ignore her concerns no longer. Maybe if she was sufficiently vague, she could vent a little without giving away the proverbial ghost.
"Do you ever have trouble controlling your quirk?" she asked quietly. Apparently she had all of Hyousuke's focus -- the shoes sat, forgotten for the moment. She wasn't sure if that was a good or a bad thing. "Like -- have you ever pushed yourself too far?"

| When she mentioned something personal, he'd expected her to ask about something between her and a friend, or perhaps his advice on a family matter. He braced himself for the question, but what followed after he hadn't even thought a possibility. For a moment, he froze, his fingers quivering above the shoe as he was bending down to take it off. His eyes, if only for a split second - a miniscule fraction of a moment - took on a blank, almost entirely absent look. he couldn't manage a response to her at first. His pensive look told that he was thinking about it, but that was it.
That question, asking him if he'd pushed himself too far... His Quirk wasn't the kind that would harm him much if he used it for too long, but pushing himself too far? Throwing himself into a situation he was ill-equipped to handle, and suffering for it? That was something that he knew. As if on instinct, his hand reached up to touch the bottom of the scar cutting across his eye, before lowering quickly. "A... A little. Once" He answered. His tone was hesitant, and a far cry from the relaxed dauntlessness that he tended to exhibit more often. "Why do you ask?" |
