Cinder’s irreverence was at both welcome and utterly confusing. If it was slang she knew, she was fine. If it wasn’t.... or if it was followed up by something completely out of context Fairy? Was Cinder calling her....
Oh.
Feral. Ferie. Was that also a way to spell Fairy? Fairy had too many As and Is; it was too much like Akiko, even if it didn’t have any Ks.
This train of thought sustained her until she was outside and the warm sunlight sank into her hair and fur and skin, even as her ears soaked in the noise of the street. Voices and footsteps and engines and bike chains and hanging signs shifting in the faint wind. Nothing concerning or too loud for comfort. She darted after Cinder, a half step behind once the pro hero actually started moving. The older girl’s hero suit rustled a little differently than most fabrics, especially where the legs brushed against each other on each stride. Staying too close was... toasty, like she’d fallen asleep in full summer sun, but in such light clothing it would be a while before she overheated. Besides, it made Cinder’s fieryness even more obvious, as well as clearing a path for them to move in the crowd. That was a little bit disappointing. Feral rather enjoyed darting through swarming masses of people, especially with a moment to stretch her joints into a more predatory agility.
Should she do that now? She couldn’t maintain it forever, though, not without sacrificing something else... and it would be dumb to deafen herself. It didn’t take too long to make the change, but it wasn’t instantaneous, if something were to happen...
Through all of this, one of her ears roamed about, constantly changing angles to pick up on and filter in any concerning sounds, and the other stayed more or less trained on Cinder... although Feral was busy enough in her head that she wasn’t quite completely following every word. Most of it came across as not new information that was in statements and did not imply that she had to answer with more than the occasional nod. When they turned down a quieter street, though, an actual question flew out and interrupted Feral’s musings on whether it was better to be proactive or patient.
”Sign up? With the Lunar Agency or UA?” The answers were slightly different. Cinder probably wanted both, and it wasn’t like Feral really hid it, especially from people who actually worked at the Lunar Agency and would end up knowing anyway, if they didn’t already. ”The agency was first. Blue Weaver. Got my pack off the street, and then it turned out that Lunar Judge knew one of my dads. Worked with him. Something like that.” Old details that didn’t apply to much these days, and still had a few shreds of memory that were especially unhelpful. ”They helped me get into UA because of that. Keep helping.”
She paused, keeping her feet in place to stop the annoying boots from adding noise. She had heard... something. Faint and far, not at all clear, and she couldn’t tell what it had been. Her ears shifted slightly, and then she softly exhaled and moved forward again. She trusted that she had heard something, but it wasn’t overtly threatening and they were moving in the right direction anyway. If it came again, her ears were ready.

Feral wished she had entered the room holding the remains of her assignment behind her back rather than on full display, but she could hardly move them now that her teacher was looking directly at her. Hiding them would not only make her look guilty (and weak, and childish, and not remotely hero-material) but wouldn’t even serve a purpose because it had already been seen. Seen, assessed, and judged, no doubt. She could tell that Ms. Kawaha was worried, but the sound of metal fragments trickling to the ground had Feral even more on edge. She didn’t know just what worried the teacher, and there were both helpful and dangerous options available for that, and some of the outcomes were maybe okay but some of them were worst-case.
Entirely possible worst cases.
Feral swallowed, ears low and tucked back along her head even if it lost so much of her height. She stepped in further when prompted, and knew the way to this particular teacher’s desk, and if she walked more on her toes than usual she did at least keep her heels close to the ground. Maybe it came across as trying to keep from tracking mud in. Maybe it just made her seem more like an animal. Maybe she should be more like an animal. It made so much more sense so much of the time. Animals didn’t drink tea, though. Mostly. Kai liked cold tea, especially if it was sweet. She liked warm tea, mostly, and nodded to the teacher’s offer.
She should try to explain. Try to avoid the worst case options. ”It wasn’t my pack,” she blurted, though soft spoken. ”They said to say my dog ate it but that’s not true and I just - I didn’t have time to do it again and also all the questions were on it and I don’t remember all of them and I- I didn’t know what else to do so I just...... came anyway.”. She trailed off, muddied hands slowly sinking lower. She was not making this any better. She was just making excuses.

Feral glanced up. Did Sigrid maybe like the classroom stuff more than the running around fun stuff? Maybe... maybe Sigrid could actually help her the next time she got stuck, and she wouldn’t have to bug Blue Weaver when she was working or busy or anything. She certainly didn’t want to be constantly asking her tutor, because then maybe he would think that she couldn’t do it, and he might tell the school and there could be all sorts of issues down that road. She did not want to go down that road.
Besides, she was supposed to learn how to get help from other people, wasn’t she? Her ears flicked. Yes. Yes she was. So -
Sigrid was gone. Not very far, just down the hall, towards the echoing noise that often directed Feral to avoid the common space downstairs. Her ears flicked again, this time flattening back a bit, but Sigrid had turned away and the annoyance was with all the noise anyway, not her. Sigrid didn’t look like she had ears, not really. Although she could clearly hear. Maybe noise didn’t bother her? At least not as much, anyway. But Feral could probably hear better. That was why she had the ears! She gave them a little scratch before nudging all stray animals back inside the room with a foot. Still shedding a bit. This time of year was always so iiiiiitchy! And messy. Hair everywhere. Maybe she should clean it up before going back to her homework....

It was not a good day.
Oh, it had started out well enough, if not delightful. The sun was out but it wasn’t too hot, and while it looked like it might rain again later, she expected to be indoors, perhaps sprawled in the sun in a pile of fur since her assignment was done, and trying to finish it had been the hardest thing she’d done all month; she’d had to actually ask for an extra day to finish it all.
She’d left her dorm alone, the pack more interested in that patch of sun, and dodged puddles on the way to the main school building. The assignment was rolled up in one hand, nice and neat to protect it as she went to hand it in, but when a much larger student went out of his way to shoulder past her - despite her sideways dodge - it fluttered open, pages gradually settling into puddles and stretches of mud alongside the path.
Feral herself managed to land her spin in a crouch, both hands deep in muddy grass, tail bristling and bones aching, but her annoyance faded into horror when the other student, and one of the two others with him, stopped, turned, and ground his muddy shoe into the nearest of the pages of her assignment. One of his friends jumped onto another patch, and when Feral started to so much as lean towards them, to try to save her papers, the third loomed overhead.
All she really knew about the trio was that they weren’t hero course, and they were older than her by at least a year, and they didn’t think she should be there. That she couldn’t be a hero. And that if the school couldn’t see that, then they would take it upon themselves to reveal it. She couldn’t do anything back to them; attacking them would be even more likely to get her expelled, and she wasn’t so confident in her physical strength against this particular group, non-hero-stream or not, when she was alone. And whenever she tried to talk to them, they just laughed and made more fun of her and tried to taunt her into attacking, since she apparently talked like an animal and animals dealt with things with their teeth.
She ground those teeth together now, unable to speak, unable to save her papers while they stood on them, unable to just leave and have nothing at all to hand in, unable to do anything to the people responsible, while they laughed and stomped and loomed, and then the main student leaned down to pick up the papers. Confused but still unmoving, crouched in the mud like an animal, Feral watched as he gathered up all the sheets, stacking them mostly neatly but probably not in order, and then moved toward Feral. Her tail stiffened even more as he approached, but she slowly stood, mud dripping from her hands.
He stopped just outside of arm’s reach, and then ripped the wet, muddy paper apart. He tossed the shreds into the air, and then finally left, still laughing. A few feet away, he paused, and looked back. “Just say your dog ate your homework,” he suggested, and then left with his friends. Left Feral to crouch again and collect the fragments, try to clean off the mud with her muddy hands, and trudge back onto the path toward her original destination. She was still trying to decide what she would do next when she found herself inside, tracking mud across the just-cleaned floors, and then at the entrance to the teacher’s lounge, and then her teacher was directly in front of her and she still couldn’t speak, just stand there with muddy hands and bare feet (although the latter wasn’t new), holding the piled, sticky mess of paper scraps and mud smears.

Daily brushing? Sure, Feral combed through her own hair and her pack’s coats frequently, using her fingers, but the actual brush Blue Weaver had insisted she take really only ever came out of its drawer when either the hero was going to see her or Something Important was supposed to be happening. The rest of the time, fingers beat brushes. But if Hanako was so proud of daily brushing for her rabbit, then maybe she should keep that opinion to herself. See, she could do this human social thing!
...the rabbit was old? Feral’s self confidence slid back into a corner as she tried to process the association between this relaxed but vital mound of sleek fur with the... the old people she sometimes saw in passing. Otherwise, the oldest person properly in her life had been Wolfdad, and he didn’t count. Plus he was a wolf, but a Quirk wolf, so it didn’t apply. If Yuki was so old but didn’t really look it, and rabbits didn’t live very long... did that mean that Hanako was old too? Her vague confusion briefly sharpened into attention again, but Hanako was busy describing herself as a teenager so Feral could at least toss that thought out the window. Besides, this was the 1-B dorm building. It was all 1-B students living there, and students were generally about the same age. Or so she had been told. At some point. By someone.
At any rate, Feral wasn’t offended at the potential stress-mishandling implications because she didn’t really notice, and even if she had noticed she probably wouldn’t have been offended. She was much too well on her way to vibrating out of her skin with excitement at the thought of actually touching the rabbit. Crow was interested as well, but a quietly distinct sound between Feral’s teeth had him settling back to wait. She got to see the rabbit first, and Hanako was holding Yuki out towards her, and Feral’s tail would have left dents in anything behind her if she’d been foolish enough to position herself where such a thing could happen, and she carefully edged forward over Crow, barely clearing his ears in her crouch, and reached out a gentle hand even as she nodded (belatedly) at Hanako.
She brought her hand where the rabbit could see and smell it, and then brought it around, in Yuki’s line of sight, to just barely make contact with the rabbit’s shoulder. Immediately, Feral’s eyes shot open, ears seeming to somehow spread even larger, and absolute amazement poured from her face, along with the very soft whisper, ”So soft!”

Feral’s oversized ears caught Hanako’s quiet voice well enough that the lack of volume barely registered, and she slipped forward until she was almost, but not quite, within arm’s reach of Hanako and the rabbit cage. She watched the interaction with intent curiosity, ears twitching slightly as she tried to discern if Hanako could also communicate with her pack-rabbit. If they were both rabbits, then it made complete sense to Feral that they would be able to communicate, but she had also learned that most people could not communicate with animals, and certainly not in even limited words. But she kind of always hoped to encounter someone else who did, and so she had to assess this time.
Crow was not nearly so alert, though he had perked up as they re-approached the rabbit smell, and now his nose worked and his whiskers twitched from his secure space in Feral’s arms. When he saw the rabbit properly, his eyes widened, ears coming to attention, and he just staaaaaaaared.
Feral wasn’t much more subtle, although rather than going still her tail full-on wagged behind her where she crouched. It didn’t have quite enough force to knock her off balance, but it was a good thing that there was plenty of space behind her, or the visit might have been interrupted by injury after all. The rabbit was just so... so... fluffy. How could something so small be so fluffy? And those ears were so strange. The pictures of rabbits she’d seen before didn’t do any of it justice. Especially the fluffiness. Her fingers twitched in Crow’s silky fur, aching to feel the rabbit fur and compare it. She quickly looked up to Hanako’s face, eyes bright and innocently excited, then back to the rabbit, then back to Hanako. Her tail moved a bit faster. She glanced down at at Crow. Oh! Was this how people introduced their pack? Or at least how Hanako did it? She didn’t usually think about how old Crow was, or any of them. Numbers were a thing usually reserved for money and math classes.
”Yuki is very fluffy,” she agreed solemnly despite the tail still wagging behind her. ”Erm. Crow is. About.”. Wait, she could figure this out. Kai was a couple years old. Three summers? Three. And he was about as old now as Crow had been when Kai had joined the pack. So that would make him.... ”Six! They’re almost the same age!”. She paused, a new thought occurring. ”How old do rabbits get? If Crow were human he’d be... I think in his 20s? But he’s not exactly especially smart, so if it weren’t for pack he’d probably never have made it this long.”. Feral was only slightly intentional about the stretched-out description; longer sentences made it less likely that Crow would understand and take offence. She needn’t‘ve worried, though, because he was much too focused on Yuki.
Slowly, slowly, slowly, Feral lowered Crow to the floor, glancing up at Hanako so that she could reclaim the cat at the slightest sign of worry or disapproval. Crow behaved himself admirably, though, and only leaned forward a bit, nose working again with curiosity.

It took a while for Hanako to answer, and Feral couldn’t tell just what the hesitation was from. Had she expected Feral to turn down the offer? Had it not been made in good faith? Was she regretting it now? Was it related to jumping the balconies? Feral did know that most people wouldn’t consider it, even if it wasn’t very far. Heck, it wasn’t even really necessary to jump unless you were Crow’s size. Crow had to jump. He was small. But springy.
But then Hanako spoke, and it wasn’t to turn anything down. It was to include Crow! Make sure he didn’t what?
Rabbit. Scared. Cat.
The thought that rabbits might be prey animals had not actually occurred to Feral. She’d been much too preoccupied with the newness and the stress of Crow putting everything at risk for the whole pack. Now that she slowed down, though, it made sense. She had no inclination to chew on either Hanako or Yuki, and Crow didn’t seem to either, but soft fuzzy things were generally at some degree of risk of other, bigger things wanting to chew on them. So. Probable situation was that Hanako was worried specifically about Crow trying to eat Yuki. Possibly about Feral trying to eat Yuki? But she hadn’t been hungry in ages, and even if she were interested in eating something out of a cage, she’d still have to cook it somehow. Or. Well. She’d survived eating raw meat before, and worse things, but her powers kind of kicked in in a way she didn’t really... enjoy.
”Why would it be rude?” she asked, crouching smoothly (but carefully not too quick, if she was also included in the maybe-might-bite assessment). ”Have to protect your pack. Getting hurt is bad enough, but even Crow isn’t dumb enough to attack something he’s been told not to. Except feet. It’s harder when he’s playing. But I won’t let him do that either!” She plopped the black cat on the balcony but kept a hand on the back of his head and neck, scritching gently. ”Only look, no touching. Yuki is a friend[/.”. She leaned into the words, though she had no particular power to actually make anyone or anything follow orders. ”Friend.”
Crow flicked his tail, but made no protest, so Feral scooped him up again and hesitantly, slowly, stepped into the other student’s dorm room with him.

Hanako’s confusion quickly reminded Feral that most people didn’t use the termpack, especially in relation to the members of their family. It wouldn’t stop her from using it, though, because that was what they were, but she had forgotten that it might confuse some other people. There was too much going on. She was too stressed out.
There didn’t seem to be any lingering reasons to be so stressed, though. Was there? Crow was under control, and not actively trying to misbehave more. No damage had been done. She was... kind of... conversing with Hanako, who was also stressed out, but was maybe calming down. No obvious signs that there was any impending doom or threat. Right?
So.
Deep breath in. Slow breath out. Process the idea of a rabbit, up until now a mythical creature of advertisements and artwork, getting into trouble. Deep breath in. Slow breath out. Now she felt more tired than stressed, as her muscles finally relaxed properly and realized how stiff they had been. The reduced stress even made it easier to take note of the little movements Hanako was making, the rabbit girl shaking her head and twisting her hand. Fighting fear?
...
...
...
Of her? Also:
See Yuki the rabbit that was not also a person, probably with a rabbit quirk, but was an actual animal rabbit?
Feral warred with processing the realization that Hanako was probably afraid of her and restraining the excitement at the thought of meeting such a rare and strange creature, the latter winning out until she took a half step forward and she remembered that her arms were full of cat. She paused. How should she make this work? She wanted to see the rabbit. She did not want to scare Hanako. Scared people could be dangerous, but also Feral only wanted bad people to be afraid of her. A neighbour here meant that Hanako was also a UA student and therefore trying to be a hero, which made her a not-bad person, a good person. At least partially. So Feral didn’t want her to be afraid of her. And she didn’t want Crow to make trouble for her.
Her ears shot up as a solution presented itself. ”Can I? If I keep Crow away. I can lock him in my room. Won’t take long. He needs a door open to get out, and he’s too sad to be curious now anyway. And I’ll make sure he doesn’t cause you any more trouble. He just hasn’t met a rabbit before either.”. Feral’s tail bounced now, guileless in its hopeful excitement.

Sigrid leaned backward, comfortable in her own support, and watched Feral as Feral continued to watch Sigrid, still not entirely relaxed and definitely not anywhere near as chill as Sigrid was now. The assurance that she wanted visits from Feral’s pack helped, of course, and the simple fact that the conversation had gone on for a few minutes without anything especially stressful actually happening. A couple of confusing things, sure, but Feral chalked that up to her own inexperience with people society stuff.
At least, nothing especially stressful until Sigrid went and mentioned homework. Feral did not let her gaze slide into the room, or her memory supply what was left to do; there was always more to do. Always. Not all of it for UA itself, but still, there was always more things to write and struggle with and think about. So much paper. Nope. Not thinking about it -
Never mind that she had clearly been thinking about it for a while, since her ears noted a lull in the general noise level and conversation status, but then Sigrid went and directly asked about it.
Feral couldn’t hide her flinch, then, eyes sliding down and to the side as if not making eye contact would somehow make it easier to hide the fact that no, she had not finished her homework. Yet. Yet! She would get it done. There was just so much, and it never stopped...
Her hands slid behind her back to tangle in the long ponytail hiding beneath her tank until it met her tail. ”Mostly...” she reluctantly admitted. ”I thought there’d be more doing stuff...”

Feet still swinging, Feral’s ears swivelled to attention well before someone entered the waiting room from the back end of the agency. The footsteps didn’t belong to anyone she knew well, but the bright-and-pale figure that emerged wasn’t entirely unfamiliar. Someone recent, but not someone she’d talked to. New hero? Sidekick, anyway. Feral generally didn’t have attention to spare for them. Was this the person she was waiting for? Hard to say, even if the feather-armed girl in overalls was looking directly at her, at least until she spoke and crossed her bird arms at her. Could she fly?
Cinder. Easier to say and remember than Haruka. Feral nodded, to confirm that she was indeed Feral, and slid from the chair to rise smoothly to her (urk) booted feet. ”It’s nice to meet you, Cinder,” she said, carefully formal as she shook out her tail to compensate for the time spent with it stuck through the back of a chair. ”I don’t... know much about this. Blue Weaver - she said I was supposed to...” She trailed off a bit, struggling to explain something she didn’t really know while still remaining polite and formal, but brightened obviously when Cinder suggested they go outside. Outside was much better, as long as she wasn’t cold or wet. But that would not be the case today. The weather was much too nice, and besides, she knew she’d be able to warm up again afterwards even if something did happen. That reliability did wonders for the mood.
”I’ve been on patrols with Blue Weaver before,” she offered hesitantly once they were outside, her amber eyes quickly adjusting to the sunlight leaning comfortably on her skin and fur. ”Not recently, though.” She had been much too busy with school. UA asked and expected a lot of its students, and she had extra work on top of that. But she’d mostly been keeping up on it all lately. True, she had more to do, as usual, once she finished with this thing today, but that was something to worry about later. For now, she was out in the streets, warm and fed and dry, not with her pack but with the knowledge that they were safe and well, and as such she moved smoothly, alert but calm and content, and only a little bit like she’d happily break into a run on the next step, simply for being outside and on the move.

A little part of Feral withered when Hanako slouched, as if disappointed, upon hearing Feral’s name. One of the few times she didn’t worry that a new person would judge her for it, not that she would ever willingly admit her concerns, and there it was. Disapproval. Dislike. If they understood, they wouldn’t... but why would they care to understand?
Lost in her head and her worries and her sinking emotions, Feral almost missed when Hanako continued to talk. With a small start, her attention flicked back up. Yuki? Crow had been looking at something or someone called Yuki?
A rabbit?
Feral had heard of rabbits. She had even seen cartoon pictures of them before: a convenience store in her old territory had had one on their sign. Wolfdad had used it back when he started teaching her about reading. Rabbit Moon Store. There was a picture of a rabbit sniffing a crescent moon, and it was a store. She still remembered it, all these years later. She had not, however, ever encountered a live rabbit. Ever. She had actually encountered more dragons than rabbits. So now she tilted her head, somewhere between confused and curious. Hanako’s description wasn’t making anything make any more sense either. Raise her ears? Weird to have her? This was somehow something worrying?
”I’ve never met a rabbit before.”. Feral’s tail waved hesitantly. ”Is it weird to have a rabbit in your pack?”. She spoke with an honest and open lack of understanding; she had a human in her pack, so how could a rabbit be strange? She tilted her head the other direction, then looked down at Crow. There you go. Rabbit. Satisfied now?”. She took a long moment to stare at the cat, and then, not entirely satisfied that he wouldn’t go right back into trouble, repositioned him in her arms, supporting him more comfortably for them both.
”Hm? Oh, er.” The need to protect herself and her pack from Crow’s dumb stunt warred with general honesty, and the pragmatic reality that she could hardly hide from a new neighbour forever, and getting caught in a lie would be as bad, if not worse, for their security. ”Yea- Yes. On, er, that side.”. She gestured with her chin, since her hands were busy with Crow. ”I, uh, I wouldn’t have come over that way if it weren’t for Crow. I don’t normally - other people’s - I don’t want to cause any trouble.”

The long-eared mystery student flinched, and Feral’s ears caught the movement even if the floor took up most of her visual field, and she nearly bolted herself. Her muscles were already tensed, so the sudden tension did very little, and she forced her feet to stay anchored to the ground like they had sunk into fresh concrete. Not to trap her, but to keep her from being dumb. Slowly, slowly, she flexed and then stretched out her toes and her feet, carefully shifting her weight to loosen her legs before anything cramped.
Hanako Miruku. A name. This person had a name. And she offered it. She wasn’t trying to hide anything or run off to report Crow’s bad behaviour. The apology had worked, at least so far. She just had to keep going like this. It would be okay. It would. She could make it be okay. ”I-“ Names. She wasn’t relaxed enough for this by far. Just thinking about names was bringing her tension right back up, even more than usual because if this Hanako did decide to report it, it would be even easier to bring all the consequences down on Feral if she knew her name. Except no, it wouldn’t make a difference, because the school knew about her and Hanako had seen her face, so she was very identifiable. She swallowed. ”I’m Feral. My name is. Um.”. A slow breath out. ”I, uh. I came to get Crow.”. She lifted the limp, flat-eared cat slightly. ”He jumped between the balconies. I’m sorry if he caused any trouble!”
The offending cat grumbled petulantly, coming through to Feral as had to find smell. Feral’s ears flicked, and her own nostrils flared, and she looked around the room until she caught sight of the cage. ”What do you have?” she asked, pure curiosity seeping into her voice.

Not all, but a substantial amount of the tension faded from its outposts in Feral’s shoulders and ears and tail and throat and gut. Sigrid had not only not reacted negatively to Feral’s name but had also agreed to use it. One more person who wouldn’t end up calling her by her old name. It wasn’t that it was bad or anything, it just didn’t.... fit. It wasn’t her, whatever the paperwork said.
But she didn’t need to deal with any of that right now. Sigrid would call her Feral, and the whole pack liked her so far. Kai especially; he didn’t want her to stop patting him, and was trying to reinsert his head into her rapidly ascending hands. The moment he reared up, though, still following Sigrid’s movement, Feral clicked her tongue at him, sharp and firm but brief. Kai huffed and twisted to the side before his paws could make contact.
Feral offered a hesitant smile, not quite showing the edge of her teeth. ”He likes you. He usually tries to pretend he’s mean and scary, but all he really ever wants is to get his face rubbed.”. Her smile faltered as she ran out of things to say, and then was replaced by a small crinkle between her eyebrows as she tried to decipher Sigrid’s words. Was this sort of encountered called stopping by? But Sigrid had just followed Crow when she called him back after he wandered off and got into a place he shouldn’t have. So if this was reversed to take place at Sigrid’s room, when Sigrid didn’t appear to have a cat who would sneak into Feral’s room...
”Do you want them to visit you?” she asked, gesturing briefly to Kai (still hanging close and hoping for more attention) and Crow (somewhere out of sight in the room, so the gesture included Quick). She wasn’t sure what she would have to do with the interaction. ”You can ask, whenever we’re inside. And awake. Except for Crow, he sleeps all the time so it’s okay to wake him up.”

As Feral stared at the... person across the room, the silence stretched on. Not complete silence, of course. Even without her ears, Feral imagined the probable-student’s breathing would be audible (with such floppy ears, how well could the strange, soft-looking, probably-female person hear? Soft from the fur, probably female from the clothing choices because most humans were consistent about that). With them, and with them so very attentive on the uncertain situation, she could hear the other, smaller animal rustling and breathing. She even fancied she could hear the student’s nose working as she breathed faster than Feral suspected to be possible for something so large.
What was she? Feral felt like she ought to know, and it didn’t seem that she was especially dangerous, but as a human with a Quirk, assuming safety was stupid. Assuming that a student at UA, even another first year student, was safe would be even more stupid. Feral tried not to be stupid, especially when it came to safety, and Crow was with her. And Kai and Quick were next door.
Would this person be a danger to her pack, being so nearby? Walls weren’t necessarily barriers, and both she and Crow had proven the vulnerability of adjacent balconies mere moments before. She couldn’t just leave that sot of mystery. She needed to know more.
The mystery maybe-soft, maybe-threat person squeaked something. Feral tensed, but there wasn’t enough complexity to the sound for her to glean any meaning. Her fingertips curled into Crow’s fur. Should she make the first move? What was the risk? Worst case scenario, what was the immediate threat? They were far enough apart that she would have some warning if the stranger lunged. There were no obvious signs of weapons, allies, or activated Quirks. The immediate threat was moderately low. She wasn’t trying to catch this person or anything, so if she triggered a lunge away that was fine.
But what if it turned into an issue with the school? Belatedly, Feral vaguely remembered something about how the school, and human society in general, had rules and laws about artificial territory. And consequences other than a scuffle for trespassing. She couldn’t think about that right now. It would just make her more stressed and she probably wouldn’t be able to remember it anyway.
She swallowed. The real risk wasn’t any immediate threat, or danger directly to her pack. She could handle that. She could fight. But if the school got mad... how could she protect them against that? Against what would happen next? The hair along the back of her neck, as well as the fur on her ears and tail, stiffened with worry. What did people do when they’d done something that other people might think was wrong, to keep from those people acting badly against them in response?
Feral shivered and bit her lip, unintentionally with a sharp tooth. With a dash of metal in her mouth, she abruptly tried to bow over Crow, while trying to contain his renewed protests (halfhearted at best), and maybe trying to maybe make him bow too, and half-whispered, half-shouted at the ground: ”Sorry!”
