Kota took the last few steps out of the forest. He had just finished his biggest story yet- "Forged in Lies". It was a tale about a student getting a temporary internship for one of the greatest heroes in the world- only to figure out that they were a fake, a phony. The intern doesn't know how to exactly cope with it because their life was threatened by the hero, and the rest of the story is their adventures of the internship. In the end, the intern exposed the hero. It was one of Kota's best stories so far, and he was very proud of it. So he decided it was appropriate to treat himself.
In his pocket was about five dollars of change that he had found on the ground and kept over the past few months, money that people had dropped or fell out of their wallets or something. Whatever the backstory, it was now Kota's, and he was going over to the local Ice Cream parlor to get some ice cream. He figured it would buy him a small single at best, possibly a double. Whatever the case, he was ready for a delicious, icy delight.
What Kota was not expecting was the Ice Cream parlor to have a lot of people in it. It was a Monday and school had been out an hour ago, so Kota didn't think there would be a numerous amount of people. This kind of freaked him out a little bit, and he was strongly considering turning back and just going home, even though he didn't want to. But no. Kota stood firm. He wouldn't let a little bit on anxiety ruin his special day out. Kota kept his head low as he ducked into the ice cream parlor. Fortunately, he was short, so not many people noticed him as he quickly speed-walked to the front counter. One of the workers said they'd be with him in a minute, and so while he waited, Kota decided he'd pick a flavor. But oh, there were so many flavors... which one would he pick? Every single one looked delicious. Cotton candy, rocky road, bubblegum, birthday cake, chocolate chunk... oh no. He couldn't pick.
Kota finally just decided on plain old vanilla and ordered it. Thankfully one scoop was in his price range, so that's what he got. He took the cup and waddled outside, where there were a lot less people, and sat at one of the umbrella tables. It wasn't sunny, it was actually pretty cloudy, so as Kota ate his ice cream, his body temperature got colder and colder. It was warmer inside, but there was just too many people for Kota to handle... scrunched up and shivering in his seat, Kota continued to nibble at his vanilla scoop. Despite the cold, it was still pretty good.

Sam needed a treat. She was so frazzled that if she were in an anime her hair was sticking up in all directions. Her first day at UA... it had been every bit as exciting and even more terrifying than she expected. Her classmates seemed nice enough, an eclectic bunch, but she didn't know them all yet. And some were... intimidating. No, she was feeling peopled out, but knew there'd be more socialisation in the dorms. She didn't mind it, but she had great inertia when it came to social situations. So she needed a quiet moment to recharge. There'd been some concerned looks when she left so suddenly after the last bell, but she figured she'd best explain it in the dorms that night, help them to understand she just needed time to acclimatise. Instead she'd booked on over to her room, still mostly packed up, and quickly changed into her well worn hoodie, and grabbed a bag with a few comfort items.
She'd recalled seeing a nice looking ice cream parlour in the week before classes. Yes, a sweet treat to calm her nerves and reward herself for making it through day 1. She knew she'd have to put more thought into her diet and fitness soon enough, but one stressor at the time. It wouldn't do to say she weaved or barrelled through the pedestrians, rather like Moses people tended to part around her. She had her headphones on, but couldn't decide what to listen too, so she just left it idling on a song she'd heard many times before. It drowned out the sound of her tail dragging on the pavement.
Finally, she saw the parlour sign. She'd been beginning to regret the distance, another sign she was out of shape. But the sight of goal line buoyed her, and she picked up the pace. It was surprisingly busy inside, and she knew it'd be hard to find somewhere quiet, and she didn't want to walk further than she had too, so the park was out of the question. It was a problem for later, for now she gazed over the options, and went for her favourite, cookies and cream. Wait, not a scoop, a sundae! Why not? If you're going to treat yourself go all out. Her family was going to send some living funds, but she knew money would be tight, so she'd est enjoy what she had now. So distracted by her thoughts, she forgot to duck and her head collided with the top of the doorframe.
The impact shook her out of her thoughts, and she looked around. Later had come, she had a tasty looking sundae and most of the tables were full.
Wait, there was a kid sitting alone at a table. There weren't alot of other options, and Sam figured there was no harm in asking if she could use one of the chairs. They didn't look strong enough for her weight, but her tail could help support her. It was a little awkward weaving through the collective people, she felt someone trip over her tail, but they just chuckled and moved on. Still something strange happened when she got close, her headphones cut out, and she couldn't hear a thing from them. She'd check when she sat down. Instead she slid up to the boy and, trying to muster her best smile, tapped him on the shoulder.
'Hi, would it be ok if I sat there?' she said, gesturing to one of the other seats with her free hand. Wait... she didn't hear her own words, not even inside her skull. But she could hear the ambience around. She blinked and tried to exclaim but it was still silent. It was a little unsettling, but at least it would be quieter. She refocused and looked at the boy, whom she now noticed was shivering. A hug to warm up was possible, but still lets see if she could sit down first.

Kota was about halfway done with his ice cream. It was yummy and simple- just how vanilla flavoring tasted like. He smiled a little, but then the icy wind blew it off his face. It was a little hard to enjoy his treat with the cold breeze. It was okay, though, because he thought of other things and his smile popped right back onto his face.
Again, his smile faltered. A really big girl was walking towards him. Like, really big. She had huge plates on her back and splotches of black scales- or just skin, he couldn't tell. The girl also had a big tail that took up most of the space behind her. Kota felt overwhelmed and very intimidated. He shrank in his seat.
He could barely make out what the girl tried to say to him. It was partly because of his quirk, because he could hear nothing, but from the smallest echoes outside of his silent bubble and reading her lips, Kota made out what she said. She wanted to have a seat next to him. Oh no no no. There was no way Kota would- he took a deep breath. From the lesson he had learned from becoming friends with Asahi, he knew better than to judge a book by its cover, to embrace what was in front of him. Who knows, it may lead to good things. Kota loosed up a bit and nodded the slightest bit, then gestured to the chair next to him with his free hand. Then he looked into the opposite direction of the girl, unintentionally signaling that he was hesitant. Kota was truly nervous, a tiny bit frightened, and wasn't sure if he was ready for what would come next.

Sam immediately regretted her choice. The boy was clearly afraid. Why shouldn't he be, Sam looked like she could just gobble him up... But still he accepted her presence. She felt caught in a bind, sitting next to someone you were terrifying wasn't very nice, but on the other hand turning away now would be rude.... which was the greater sin? She hesitated. She couldn't ask him whether it was ok because of the silence. She couldn't keep standing there though, that was worse!
The sundae was placed delicately on the table. She then took off her satchel back and put on the table, the comfort objects inside settling into place. Sam then carefully threaded her tail through the chair back and sat down, stiffening it to take some of her weight off the cheap seating. It took a few moments to adjust herself where her spines weren't catching on the chair. Sam looked at the kid again... but what to do? She should talk, at least she should check if she should leave? She didn't have any paper in her bag. But her phone could do? Praying this wasn't some elaborate pickpocketting con, Sam carefully typed a message in a note on her phone and put it in view of the boy.
And then cursed, she'd written it in english. Hurriedly Sam took the phone back. It was still awkward to type cross languages, the spell check kept fighting her but finally she set it down again within view, and nervously figtted waiting for a response.
[My name is Sam. Am I scaring you? I know I look scary. I can leave if it makes you more comfortable]

Kota read the text from Sam's cellphone. He tried to loosen up. He didn't want Sam to think that he was scared of her... and it would be extremely rude to send her away. Plus, who knows, something good may happen. Kota shook his head. He didn't want Sam to go away. She had done nothing wrong. Kota shuffled through his pockets and took out a wrinkled piece of paper and a pencil. Setting down his half-eaten ice cream to the side, he then wrote down a message and slid it over to Sam.
It read, "No, you can stay. Sorry about my reaction, I'm sure you're a nice person." Kota fidgeted awkwardly in his chair. He truly didn't mean any kind of rudeness or jerk-like behavior, and would be okay sitting with Sam. But Kota could feel that he still wasn't too comfortable... maybe he should have just stayed in his hideout for the day.

Sam read the note, but she couldn't help little sentences scribbled crudely around it, they looked like story idea. Her tail twiched involuntarily as she thought about it. The boy was clearly uncomfortable, but he said it was fine.... Oh how do you read this situation? What would someone more neurotypical do? How do you make someone you just met feel safe around you?
A gesture of kindness could be it. And besides, she was worried given his occasional sliver. Wading through the tables again seemed awkward... Wait... was that a QR code? She paused and waved her phone over it. It brought up a menu with a prefilled table number. HA! That would do it. She ordered two of the biggest hot chocolates, with marshmellows. hopefully the kid would like it, if not, well she was cold too.
Payment.. yes.. payment. She reached into her bag for her wallet, so distracted she didn't think to close the top of the satchel, leaving it openly showing the small fox plushie inside, a thick science fiction novel in english and a small folder stuffed with sheets of paper. The order placed, she typed out a message. Front loading might not be the best idea, but it was who she was, she could only hope the boy was receptive.
'I don't know what to say to you at ease. I'm not good at conversation. But thank for letting me sit here. I'm new to Musutafu, I'm actually new to Japan. I'm far away from my family and I'll be for some time. If I want to make this place my home, I need to meet and get to know new people. I know I sound suspicious. All I can think of saying is that I'm starting out at U.A. High School. My quirk says I'm a monster, I don't want to be a monster, and I'm hoping the people there will help me figure it out. If this sounds suspicious or needy, or just if you want me to leave, well I've ordered some hot drinks, but just tell me and once those are done I'll leave.'
She turned the phone to the boy, her emotions written on her face.

Kota caught a glimpse of what was in Sam's purse half-accidentally. He didn't mean to look into the purse when she opened it, but once he saw, he was curious. There was a cute little fox plushy... it reminded someone that he thought he met one time at his treehouse. It was more of a faint, faraway memory though. Must haven't happened.
Kota then slowly scanned over Sam's message on her cell phone. He brightened up after reading the first few sentences. It seemed that Sam really was a nice person. Despite the large, intimidating appearance, she was kind and caring at heart. Kota read the next sentence and his smile fell. She was a student at the "all-amazing" UA High School for heroes in training. That would explain why she was even here in Musutafu. Kota now knew that she was a good person, but Hero work? To Kota, it just seemed like the most common way to failure, in career and character. Sure, there were lots of students that got to become heroes, but there are also lots of students that fail the hero course. Not only that, but some don't even get to be accepted into the school! There was a brutal entry test where you had to beat up robots, for goodness sakes!
And if you somehow got in and passed the course, then you became an actual hero. And heroes meant popularity. Popularity can corrupt a person, turn them into a social freak always looking for more and more praise. Kota absolutely despised those kinds of heroes, and there were a lot.
On the other hand, there were... nice heroes, that really cared for the safety of others. That just genuinely wanted to help make the world a better place. Those kinds of heroes Kota thought were awesome. Maybe Sam would turn out to be that kind of hero.
Kota then put his attention into other things. Sam had ordered Hot Chocolate for both of them! What a nice gesture. Kota would have thought it be bribery before, but not anymore. And it had just arrived at the table they were sitting at outside. Kota nodded many times at Sam as to rapidly say "Thank you", then sipped it. It almost instantly filled his shivering cold body with a sharp warmth, the one that burns your tongue but is worth it because you feel good inside. Kota beamed at Sam. He then took some paper and wrote on it, then handed it to Sam.
"Thank you a lot for the Hot Chocolate! I greatly appreciate it. I am really sorry about earlier. You do seem like a nice person. I would be very glad if you stayed here with me. My name is Kota, and it's very nice to meet you. I was born and raised here in Musutafu, so if you have any questions about it I can answer them. I think it's cool that you go to UA High School, just be careful, I guess? There are many kinds of heroes out there and I wouldn't want someone like you to become... well... not a good one. What year are you? First? Second? I'm all ears."

Sam visibly relaxed, a little too much it turned out as her chair let out a grown before she stiffened her tail again. The boy, Kota, seemed more at ease. And that made her feel more at ease. She didn't like the idea that she made others upset. She finally took a spoonful of her sundae, exposing a jaw of sharp teeth. She did feel a little puzzled by his response. Careful at UA? It was going to be hard she figured, but were they the sort of school to put students in actual danger. In a way it made sense, heroes were expected to face danger, and the entry test hadn't been gentle, as she'd had to carry an injured student away from a fight. A sudden wave of worry washed over her as to the path she'd chosen.
No, She wasn't going to let that doubt control her. She'd thought alot about coming to UA and nothing had changed in that regard, things would get dangerous sooner or later... and that would be when she'd find out just how tough she was.
If anything, it made focussing on these moments more important. It was unlikely she'd have much free time once studies properly kicked off, so enjoy it now.
Through out her thought process, her feelings were evident on her face, but she finally gave her head a soft shake and took a sip of the drink. Normally she liked hot chocolate sweet, but it made a good contrast to the ice cream. She took another spoonful from her sundae before typing another message to Kota.
'It's ok, I get that a lot... well... everywhere I guess. Makes me feel a little shallow that I'm in the hero course because I don't want people to be scared of me. I'm a first year student, I'm only 15, despite my size. I'd love to learn more about Musutafu. I have ADHD so I'm not one much for quiet nature strolls, unless I'm trying to calm my head down. As for a kind of hero... well I don't know what sort of hero I'd be. I'd like to think a nice one, but the truth is I've never really gotten into a fight before the entry test. I don't know if I have what it takes to not freak out or punch someone, I'd rather hear their story, see if I can help. I mean there's probably some truely bad villains, but I figure most are just ordinary people who got a bad break. I guess I'll find out one way or another, and see what happens then. I just know I don't like people being sad or hurt. But the world feels so intimidatingly big I don't know where to help.'
Sam paused and re-read her message, she was starting to ramble in TEXT of all things. She contemplated deleting it, but figured it was ok, it was who she was, and while she got nervous showing that, it was nice to meet people she could be comfortable as herself around. She typed in a few more lines and turned it, focusing on her sundae.
'Sorry, I kinda rambled there. Feels a little weird communicating this way, but if it's what you like, I'll get used to it. I'm glad to meet you Kota-san..... Do you like hugs?'

Kota sort of scrunched up in his seat. He was a little embarrassed of his quirk getting in the way of talking with Sam, and it seemed that Sam didn't like it either... but there was nothing Kota could do about it. Maybe training could be a path for him, but he had no intention of doing so. Although sign language was an option that Kota was thinking about.
His mind went back to what Sam had wrote. She was only a year older than him, surprisingly. Now that Kota looked at Sam's face, he could see the features of a young teenager. Somewhat smooth skin with a little of acne, plus other attributes. This got Kota to think about high school. It was only a year away... but there was no way he would be going to UA. His quirk is not in any way helpful to hero work... it just wouldn't work out. Kota shook off the thought.
He was at least glad that Sam had the right intentions to becoming a hero. Kota smiled at her and wrote down on the backside of the paper that he used last time to write a message to spell out a new memo.
"Wow, that's crazy that you're 15. I don't mean that in a bad way, it's just that I'm 14, so it's just crazy in that way. Anyways, I agree with you on everything you said, especially about hearing their stories. I think when you look at a situation from someone else's point of view, it really helps you understand the situation in more ways than one. I've also never been in a physical fight... I hope to never be. The closest I've gotten to a fight was kicking a hero in the crotch. Um, don't tell anyone.
If you're not all for leisurely strolls, I guess before I leave I can write a little slip of most things I know about Musutafu and it's layout. If it helps at all."

Carina flopped backwards on her bed in the dorms. It was her first day at U.A and so far everything had gone well. She would take some time to be able to remember everyones names and she hadn’t made any immediate friendships, but that was okay. Carina would find some friends as they got to know each other, probably. School was over for the day, so she had the rest of the day to herself. She didn’t really want to talk with her classmates right now, they were probably busy with setting up their rooms, so Carina decided that she could go out and maybe eat some ice cream. It wasn’t really warm outside but not cold enough for ice to be out of the question. The hero student quickly checked her phone for any ice cream shops nearby and to her delight found one that was within walking distance of U.A. Carina gathered her sketchbook and pencils, put them into her backpack and grabbed her wallet. The ice cream parlor was a bit further away then Carina had thought but that was fine. She enjoyed the walk and it wasn’t like it was that far. At the ice cream shop the girl decided to get two scopes, strawberry and chocolate. She could eat them at a table outside and use the chance to sketch something. There were enough pigeons around that she could use as a model. When she stepped outside, Carina saw a huge person sitting at one of the tables. They looked familiar and Carina realized that it was one of the other students at U.A, although not one in her class. Should she say hello? She hesitated for a moment before deciding to get a bit closer and greet her. Her classmate was sitting with another person and she didn’t want to disturb them. If they didn’t want to talk with her they could simply ignore her. “Hi.”

Sam read over Kota's response. It was nice to meet someone who agreed... she was worried that there were students in her class just looking for an excuse to beat people up. She paused... kicked a hero in the crotch?... Kota seemed pretty nice though... maybe he didn't have a way to back off? Kicking someone in general isn't nice, but then she shouldn't judge without knowing more. After all, she'd just commenting on understanding someone's story! She sipped her hot chocolate and thought about a response. Kota was only a year younger it turned out, so he wasn't just some kid. She could at least respond to part of the message while figuring out what else to say.
Finally she typed out, 'Sorry... I have ADHD, I'd happily go see things around the city, it's more in the parks and stuff, I have trouble keeping focus without stimulation.... You wouldn't happen to know where I could learn some sign language? It'd probably be easier than constantly writing back and forth.'
Content with that for now, Sam turned her attention back to her sundae, when a 'Hi' sounded to her other side. Given that sound near Kota was surpressed it must've been from outside, but it was so clear. Turning to the noise, she saw a vaguely familiar girl. Her chair, groaning mutely at Sam's constant shifting and the loss of tail support due to distraction, decided this was enough and one of the back legs gave out, sending Sam and her muted 'eeep!' tumbling towards the ground.

Kota eyes widened as Sam fell to the ground in surprise. He hadn't even heard the other girl that had spoke, he just rushed over to help Sam up. And wow, she was really heavy. Kota was a skinny teenager trying to hold up a big kaiju girl, so it seemed almost impossible to lift Sam. But once they were back up, Kota sat back down and wiped his forehead. He then turned to the girl that had spoke. What had she said? He wasn't sure, so he thought a simple "Hello" would be fitting, scribbling it down on a piece of paper and sliding it towards the girl awkwardly. Kota then thought of Sam's text on her phone.
"It's okay, I was just offering some help since you said you didn't know your way around the city. And I don't know sign language, so that won't help, it will have to be this way or you stand a few feet away from me every time you'd like to speak."
With that written down, he slid the paper towards Sam. His attention turned back to the girl that had walked towards them. He had just gotten comfortable with Sam, and it was a little rude to put her off... maybe this girl could be the same. He took back the paper he wrote "Hello" on and added a few more words.
"You can sit down, we were just having a nice talk. What's your name?"

Carina took a surprised step back when the chair of the big girl with the tail broke down and she tumbled to the ground. Had she startled her that badly or was the chair simply not made for someone of her weight? The hero student hoped that the later was the case. Scaring someone like that was not a good first impression. Fortunately, the other kid helped the girl up quickly and she seemed unharmed. They boy slid a piece of paper towards her and Carina stepped closer to read it. Suddenly she noticed that she couldn’t hear her own footsteps anymore. Perhaps the boy had some kind of noise-canceling quirk? That would explain why he communicated over writing. Carina read the invitation and sat down on one of the chairs still left at the table. She pulled out her sketchbook and flipped to a page that she hadn’t drawn on yet. “Thank you. My name is Carina. I hope I haven’t scared any of you.”

Sam gave a reassuring smile. It wasn't the first time a chair had dropped her on her tail, and she'd gotten used to it. It was a little embarassing though, but it didn't seem like many people had noticed probably due to Kota's quirk. She looked at the girl and read her page, Carina was her name. She didn't know her, but the girl didn't seem to know Kota either. Possibly someone from UA? People tended to remember Sam, but the reverse was rarely true.
She looked to Kota's response, and immediately felt sad. He mustn't have many friends then. Never needed to communicate much. Was she butting in? Maybe earlier, but he seemed genuinely liking her company now. She shook herself off, best respond. She gave Carina a nervous smile and grabbed her phone. This was not the relaxing day end she was hoping for, but she could still try to make the best of it.
'I'm Samantha, Sam for short. I'm fine. I'm used to chairs struggling with me. That said, I'm a bit frazzled from my day today, and would love to find somewhere to sit that's possibly a bit sturdier. If it's ok with you two, can we finish up the ice cream and find a less crowded space? If not, that's fine, I just really don't want to seem rude on my first meeting. I'm not really good with first impressions.'
She showed the screen to Carina, and then to Kota, looking hopeful at both of them.

After reading what Sam had typed on her cell phone, Kota gulped down the rest of his ice cream, which was a huge mistake. A brain freeze developed seconds later, and he held his hands to his head in pain. He remembered a trick he had read in a book once, and pressed his tongue to the roof of his mouth. It began to help a little bit, and after a solid minute or so, it went away completely. He lowered his hands from his head, then grabbed a paper and wrote his response on it.
"Sorry about the chair thing. We can move to somewhere else whenever you're ready, where do you guys suggest we go?"
He looked up at Carina and Sam hopefully. Wherever they went, Kota hoped that it wouldn't have a lot of people.
