It was chilly outside this weekend morning but for those that weren’t sleeping in, the view was stunning. The sun was only just beginning to rise, washing the sky with a splendor of color. Just about every visible wavelength of light could be seen, from the deep blue overhead transitioning through green, yellow, orange, and then crimson at the horizon. Not a single cloud dared obfuscate this ocular marvel. Slowly, as if intentionally trying to allow the beauty to last for as long as possible, the sun crept over the trees lining the UA campus. When the earth’s rotation couldn’t keep the day away any longer, rays of light pierced through every window facing east. The sun flooded rooms with brilliance, like some boisterous hero announcing to the whole of Nihon, I am here!
Tak!
Contrasting the outdoor beauty, a sharp clack of a phenolic resin sphere striking another of its kind reverberated inside one of the buildings. As far as sounds went, this one was unmistakable. You didn’t have to be overly familiar with billiards or snooker to recognize it.
Aside from the lone occupant, the UA rec room was void of all students. The nearby cafeteria was shuttered and most of the tables lay dormant. One of the pool tables, now illuminated by the outdoor sunlight pouring through the windows, was in use. A different type of pool might come to mind, when one happened to observe this particular piscine student. The fins flexing off the side of her head and running along the back of her legs would be better suited for a creature living in the ocean rather than one on land wielding a cue. It had previously been said, however, that Sigga was far more in her element here than in the water.

Yui both loved in the UA High Dorms as well as missed being at home. It was something which the petite student had not really expected to feel. After all, this was a chance for her to become her own person, become a hero. Yet she supposed there would always be a part of her that missed home, the familiarity of it, seeing her parents, the smell of a pot of freshly brewed tea. She woke up early, it itself not an unusual circumstance for the young hero. She often got up early, chiefly to practice playing her guitar. Fortunately whether by happy accident or design, her room was sound proofed so she would not have angry students banging on the door for the music to cease. Even if her room hadn't, she would have still practised but only after finding somewhere else in order to not disturb anyone. She did not expect to see any of the students up early, after all it was the weekend. A chance for some to finally attempt to catch up on that illusive sleep. Yui was used to getting by on only a small amount of sleep, she slept poorly at the best of times.
After practising with her guitar, she dressed herself in blue jeans, a black rock band t-shirt and black trainers. She paused by the door to her room to sling her guitar case over her shoulder before exiting. She felt like going to the rec rooms. To her surprise, the aspiring hero/musician encountered a student, who seemed to be playing pool or snooker on her own... Or was it practice? It could have been any of the three things and it still would have been the same to Yui, she did not know the game in question at all. "Erm... Good morning." Yui greeted somewhat shyly, she seemed nervous or anxious off stage but when playing music there appeared to be an air of confidence about herself. It was hard for Yui to explain, but she felt alive, free on the stage when she sang and played. "i did not expect there to be anyone else up." Yui admitted unsure if she was intruding. Maybe she was preparing for a club meeting or something? The last thing she wanted to do was disturb them if they were.

The table had been racked for eight-ball, though only Sigga was participating in the game. It was one of her few hidden talents. Back in America she had developed an aptitude in fleecing college students. Nobody expected to lose to a young teenage girl, especially if she didn’t appear to be particularly good at the game. You’d think that her insistence to put money on a match would have made people suspicious, but nope. Hubris always won out. Sometimes the girl would intentionally flub a break. This would inspire a bit of trash-talk from whomever she was up against. Of course she’d act like she had been goaded into it, but people almost always accepted her subsequent offer to double any bet. Then she’d clean them out.
It had been a couple weeks since she last played. Her previous game had been against her grandfather. She couldn’t help but exercise her hustle on the old man. It took a bit of effort, but eventually money was on the table. There was even some friendly trash-talking that had taken place and the amount of the bet had been doubled just like planned. Obviously Sigga absolutely wouldn’t have accepted the money once she won. It had just been for practice. Practice and showing off. Only… it hadn’t quite gone in the manner she had expected it to. Apparently the teenager too had a bit of excessive pride. Before she knew it the game had ended and she had lost to one of the best players she had ever come up against. Her grandfather had no intention of holding her to the bet though, the ordeal ending up being a bit of a lesson for the young fish. It was a lesson she wouldn’t forget. So, instead of practicing her bluff, the girl was simply trying to increase her competency with the game.
The billiard balls shot off in different directions. Sigga performed a clean break, sinking one each of strips and solids then surveying the table. Before she could decide on her next shot, the sound of the rec room door opening grabbed her attention. The teen spun her head, surprised to see someone else this early in the morning. She had specifically chosen to practice while everyone else was still asleep so she could keep her talent hidden and refine her technique without interruptions. The secrecy was more a habit rather than some sort of long-term stratagem. It wasn’t like she was going to start hustling her classmates. That might get her in trouble and she doubted they had any money anyway.
“Mornin’~” The fish girl chirped in reply. Though company was contrary to her plans, she didn’t seem particularly bothered by the other girl’s sudden appearance. “Heh. Me neither. Couldn’t sleep?” Sigga asked, turning back briefly to study her table again.

Yui offered the girl a polite somewhat uncertain smile. Part of her felt as though she were intruding on something. "I tend to wake up early." She admitted after a few moments of consideration. "I suppose most of the other students are taking advantage of a chance to lie in." The way the school had them working hard all of the time, with the superhero but also the usual high school stuff... It was a wonder they had any time to eat. The combination tended to leave many students exhausted by the time the weekends eventually crawled into being. However annoyingly they always seemed to vanish rapidly, unlike Mondays which dragged on forever and a day. She carefully set the guitar case down so it leaned slightly against one of the sofas, it would be rude to start practising in here, especially with it being quite early still. Not everyone fancied being awoken to the sound of music, regardless of the quality. Sleep was after all sleep, a rare resource, one which Yui often struggled to find. Sleep tended to be one of those most elusive prizes.
"Are you waiting on the rest of your club to arrive?" Yui asked, slowly approaching the table more out of curiosity than anything. She had not really spoken to the other student before, but saw her around the school from time to time. "What game is this? Pool?" Her knowledge sadly did not extend to the game in question, but Yui was not a big fan of sports in general regardless of which. She thought the game to be somewhat interesting, at least from a glance at it. Her own interests tended towards music, swimming and she was a big fan of mangas and animes. Though she tended to keep the latter two more secret than an obvious interest. But then again a lot of things about Yui tended to be if not necessarily secret, were hidden or obscured by the fact she normally did not speak much. She was a quiet one for sure, but it simply was her nature to be so.
She wondered when she might see her parents again. Probably not until they broke up for a holiday or break from the school. It was strange to miss home, but she supposed that they too were adjusting to having the house to themselves.

Sigga too was one to wake up early. Early fish catches the worm after all! Lately sleep was something that rarely eluded the girl. Ever since moving to Japan she had developed a habit of going to bed early and waking up at the crack of dawn. Jet lag got the credit for setting up her circadian rhythm to that effect, but not having any friends in this strange country meant there weren’t any late-night gatherings to disrupt her new sleeping pattern. It had been a refreshing change to her previous lifestyle that the teen aimed to keep for the time being.
The sound of a guitar case being set aside was met with a curious look, Sigga not having noticed the girl carrying it at first. The idea of students at UA taking part in extracurricular activities that didn’t have a propinquity to hero studies was something the teen hadn’t expected to witness. Thinking about it, it shouldn’t have been that surprising. There were different class types with different course loads. The pinkish-red haired girl might have been in hero management or whatever class happened to be less demanding. She might also simply be an overachiever, though having hobbies didn’t necessarily mean one couldn’t keep up with homework. Case in point: Sigga was in the midst of indulging in some pocket billiards while being part of the hero course.
There was little need for her to ask the other girl if she played the instrument. What other reason would there be for her to carry it around? Sigga herself never learned to play an instrument. Any such interest would have died off quickly enough with no parental figures to encourage such a pursuit.
“No. No club.” The teen replied. “Figured I’d take advantage of the early morning and practice a bit.” That made her wonder what reason the other girl had for coming to the rec room this early. Had she planned to play some pool as well? That didn’t seem likely considering she had brought a musical instrument with her. A follow up question helped dismiss that theory. Sigga replied with a curt confirmation of “Yup.” She didn’t bother expanding on her answer, thinking the girl might only have been asking to be polite.
Eyes still looking at the table, the fish-girl reviewed her options. There were a few potential shots for Sigga to take in her solo game, but suddenly having an audience made her hesitate. She could play just fine under a bit of pressure, but she didn’t want to give off the appearance of showing off. Ugh. She was thinking about it too hard. The teenager made an open bridge with her hand and took an easy shot, sinking a solid straight into a side pocket.

Yui nodded slowly, looking thoughtful at this. At least she would not be disrupting any planned meetings or club gaming sessions then. It would have been a bit awkward to be the only one there not in the club. "Practice makes perfect." She added on quietly, she only became as good as she was with her musical talents by constant near unending practice. It also happened to be one of her great joys in life, no matter how bad things got there was also music. "It looks complicated." Yui said after a moment's pause, she struggled to find something to fill the gaps in the conversation, small talk tending to not exactly be her greatest talent. She had always been one of the quieter ones, forever seeming to find it difficult to communicate with others. On stage, it was easy, to sing, to play... Away from it, getting the concepts, the thoughts, even small things like simple conversations proved somewhat more challenging.
She observed the shot with the slight interest of one encountering something unusual. "You seem good at it." Of course to Yui, who knew nothing about the game she could have been terrible at it and still have appeared good. She cast a glance over at her guitar case, it was probably her most precious possession here at UA. It was more than a mere object or musical instrument, but part of her soul, something so crucial to her that words failed to accurately give it justice.
Yui herself had been born an American, but came to Japan with her mother and step father at the age of four. She barely recalled anything from her native land, truly viewing Japan itself as her home. Of course her quirk came as a surprise to both mother and (step) father, since neither possessed one themselves. Course, that was all ancient history now, what mattered more was the present. Here they could learn to become heroes, go on to do great things, defend the world and save lives. She watched the other girl play for a few moments longer before heading back towards the sofas where she left the guitar case. She did not want to disturb the other student in their game, they would probably wish to concentrate then spend their time answering questions. Yui herself hated being interrupted when she practiced her music, it did not matter who or for what reason, she simply could not stand it. So she could understand if the other girl would want some quiet.

The white cue ball ricocheted, its spin slowing until it came to a stop in perfect alignment for another accessible shot. While there were so many balls on the table it was relatively easy to find a follow-up to set. It wasn’t until after one side sunk enough of them for the game to become interesting; each billiard player trying to score while concurrently trying to set up their opponent for failure.
Sigga shrugged her shoulders as she walked to the other side of the table. “Not really.” She remarked. Like many sports the rules were relatively straightforward. Things like dominating the control of the white ball, winning continuous matches, and competing under pressure, however, were decidedly more difficult. So, as far as the nuances of the game were concerned, the cerise-haired girl was right on the money.
The finned teen squinted at the table, evidently ignoring the obvious shot she had just set up in favor of one no one in the right mind would take when playing competitively. But this was just practice and, like the other student said, practice makes perfect. Sigga didn’t seem to hear the compliment and wordlessly continued on with her game. It was not uncommon for her to drown out the outside world when focusing on a task, rude as it may have been in this case. It wasn’t until after the teen attempted to jump the cue ball and failed to sink her target by a paltry three degrees that she noticed her audience had left.
Sigga spun around to see the girl taking a seat on one of the sofas. There had been some contextual clues she had failed to pick up on as far as the other student was concerned, and now couldn’t help but have her attention diverted to the only other occupant of the rec room sitting quietly by herself. The billiards table momentarily forgotten, Sigga walked over with her cue, carelessly using it as a large walking stick to hang onto when she stopped just a few feet away from the other girl. “Did you come here to practice or something?”

Yui supposed that playing a musical instrument seemed complicated till one happened to learn how to play it. She guessed the same thing applied to this particular sport, not that it held any particular appeal to her. Others enjoyed it and that was what mattered, after all there were probably many who did not care for the guitar or music. She reached over for her guitar case, picking it up and popping the catches to check on her most prized possession. The instrument itself was in fine working order and still tuned from this morning's earlier practice. As foolish at it may sound, she liked to be able to look at it, even if she were not about to start playing it. It was strange how one object could mean so much, but it provided a way to give voice to the thoughts, the feelings and concepts which were within her soul. Yui by nature tended to be a quiet student, yet put her on a stage with an instrument and she transformed into a completely different person.
She looked up at the question, her attention drawn away from self reflection. "No." She said quietly. "Not really." Yui had already done some practising this morning. "I was fed up of being in my room." Besides, it seemed like the height of ill manners to just start playing now. Especially so given the early hours and the fact there was another student here, clearly practising their own art. She would probably end up distracting them. Such a situation was far from ideal. Plus the music might be loud enough to wake the other students, her own room may have been sound proofed but that did not mean the rec room was. The last thing she wished for was to have angry half asleep students on her case for waking them up with a song or two. "I can play something if you want to hear it." Yui suggested, her eyes flicking over to a wall mounted clock. "Though I suppose we should wait sometime just so I don't have many angry students on my case."

Being musically literate was a quality Sigga did not possess. She never had the inclination to learn how to play an instrument and even if she did, a lack of parental guidance or encouragement and the requisite funds to buy or rent an instrument would have limited such an interest to mere fantasy. Listening to music was more her jam though technically the girl did, on occasion, elect to sing. All in the privacy of her bedroom, and only when she was certain nobody was eavesdropping, of course. There was no metric by which the fish had measure her intonations, but that was not a problem to overcome seeing as she’d sooner walk into a mosque wearing light-up nipple tassels than allow another human to witness her singing. Nobody had ever heard her croon and she intended to keep things that way.
That wasn’t to say Sigga was incapable of developing an interest in musical instruments, though any such inquisitive diversion could very well lean towards the applicable sciences relating to them, as much as the arts. Case in point Sigga didn’t know much about how an electrical guitar, like the one now wielded by the cerise-haired student, worked. She was pretty certain it had to be plugged into an amp in order to function. Things like semi-hollow electric guitars and vibration speakers were a foreign concept to the teen, as was the idea that an electric guitar could be played much like the stereotypical instrument one might picture when discussing fretted musical instruments, though with comparably muted acoustics. Hearing the offer made her wonder if some sort of set up was first required.
“I doubt you’d wake anyone up unless they’re, like, sleeping in the bathroom or something.” the bald girl remarked, purposely glancing in the direction of the bathrooms as she spoke. Though she truthfully doubted the sound of the instrument would carry all the way to the dorms, the teen also wouldn’t feel particularly bothered if it had. She was curious now as to this early-bird’s musical aptitude and she didn’t see any particular risk associated with persuading the other girl to dismiss her hesitation and play a tune.
Sigga listed forward, leaning on the cue she was still holding, her amber eyes looking at the other girl expectantly.

At her words, Yui smiled. "Fair point." She doubted that there would be anyone attempting to sleep in such places. Well... At least she hoped that there wasn't, but who could say for certain. "I can play something but I'd need to get some stuff from either the music room or my own first." Otherwise it would not sound right, regardless of her skill. It was still possible to play it, but well she was less inclined to when things were not going to sound correctly. She could still sing, but there was no certainty in knowing that the other girl wished to hear her just sing. Yui's music was good, but given how she had been playing most of her life it should be. She still found it ironic that dealing with people tended to be difficult for her, yet she was perfectly fine with the prospect of being on stage. Maybe she could be a musical hero? Part musician, part super hero when she eventually graduated from UA High? It was something to hope for at least, a plan of sorts even if the details needed to be written in.
"Any preferences? I can play a few songs or would you like one of my own?" Yui could do a couple of requests, but mostly her work was on her own stuff. She wanted to give voice to herself, to her own spirit rather than play someone else's tune. After all, music helped her to express a side of her which otherwise would be kept in hidden in the shadows, mute and unknown. What was difficult to express in a normal conversation, seemed to be much easier to sing.

The piscine girl’s back straightened a little. Though Sigga had assumed some setup necessary for the electric guitar to function, she thought it odd that an offer to perform had been made without the necessary equipment already present. How much work was this girl willing to put in just for the opportunity to play something? Either the offer had been made without much thought, or the girl just really liked to perform for an audience. Or both.
Sigga blinked. “Oh. No, that’s okay.” The hand holding onto the cue stick flexed in a dismissive manner. “No need to go out of your way.” Sly yet considerate, the fish had presented an opportunity for her cerise-haired peer to withdraw the offer, and to do so without any social repercussions. Though Sigga had been mildly curious of this girl’s musical talents, it was more of an… opportunistic curiosity, so to speak. Her mind was quick to make a rather ardent connection between the other girl and her instrument. Rather than music simply being a passion or hobby the guitar could very well be a sonic arbalest in the musician’s hands, its melodies weaponized by some powerful quirk. Alas…
While she wasn’t about to pry too deep into the other girl’s ability, Sigga could hardly help herself but take this chance to find out about one of the students at UA; one that wasn’t in her own class. Each person at the academy she had spoken with so far was interesting in one way or another. “Have you known how to play for long?” the teen questioned.

It was true that set up would be required in order to truly appreciate the music of her guitar. But Yui could also sing, this however she was slightly reluctant to do without the musical back up of the guitar. Not because she did not believe her voice to be any good. Rather, she feared other students listening in and getting the wrong idea. The last thing she wanted was for her song to be misinterpreted as a love sick ballad or something. She did not need a rumour circulating round the school that she had a crush on someone. The idea was a horrifying one to Yui. "If you are sure... Some other time then." Yui said quietly, knowing how much she liked to play it would only be a matter of time till she heard something.
She nodded at the question. "I started when I was little." She answered with a small smile on her face. "My father bought me it as a birthday present and I've been practising and playing ever since." In truth, the gift was from her step father, however as he was the man which raised her, Yui referred to him as her father, her dad. It seemed to her dishonourable and rude to call him by Step. It had been difficult at first, but with time and effort, she eventually became as talented as she was at the present.

With the offer to perform a musical score carefully withdraw, the other girl was able to freely answer Sigga’s casual query. The art of probing for information was a delicate dance of observation and extemporaneous questioning. Though there weren’t any significant stakes present in the girl’s verbal exchange, the bald teen could still hone her social skills on the unwitting participant. Her previous intentions to practice the artistry of pocket billiard were forgotten for the moment or, at least, mentally shelved until this opportunity had been exploited for as long as her own interest in it endured.
The answer to Sigga’s question was vague, yet still informative. She assumed the word little suggested at least a few years of study if not more. Time spent learning a topic didn’t necessarily equate to someone’s skill level, though generally those more skilled in a subject tended to have spent more time practicing it. “Hn.” An audible mumble to show she was listening and finding the expanded answer intriguing. The idea of a father, or even a parent, buying a gift for their daughter was all but foreign to Sigga. She would have been around the age of seven when she last had a real parent, but those memories had all but faded. Sure she had eaten some cake or a pastry on her own anniversary of birth, courtesy of a foster-sibling, but getting a gift as significant and expensive as a musical instrument was a concept of pure fantasy to the student. To her it wasn’t a sad thought, though. Birthday parties and the associated reception of gifts were foreign enough that any self-pity that might have been brought on by the thought had never occurred to Sigga. Jealousy on the other hand… perhaps.
Shifting in her stance, one hand letting go of the cue stick she was still holding, the teen probed further on the newly provided tangent. “Is he a pro hero?” It seemed a plausible hypothesis. If the girl had developed an interest of playing guitar due to her father’s help in nurturing that skill, then perhaps the cerise-haired girl’s choice of school had been influenced by the man to some degree as well.

At the girl's inquiry about if her father happened to be a superhero, Yui was quite surprised. After a few moments she recovered from it and smiled. "No no... He's Quirkless, he is a diplomat." Neither of her parents expected Yui to develop a Quirk, since her mother too had been Quirkless. So it had come as somewhat of a shock when Yui suddenly had a Quirk. Not that Yui herself minded having a Quirk, it allowed her to try and become a hero, to go beyond the limits which so many restricted themselves to. Though admittedly at the time, since she had been young, her Quirk had been quite of a shock to suddenly encounter.
"What about you?" Yui asked, her tone somewhat cautious. She may have been ignorant of her companion's family situation, but she knew enough from previous experience to know that not everyone happened to have a good familial life. Her own, had not been particularly great, at least from what little she remembered and from what her mother told her about in the time before her mom encountered a Japanese Diplomat... She rarely thought at all of her real father, the man had desired no presence in Yui's life and she did not wish to see if such a belief still remained. He abandoned them after all, not the other way around, besides, Suri was a fantastic father who showed nothing but kindness towards Yui.
She pushed aside thoughts of hearth and home, she missed being home but she came to here to be a hero. Yet that did not stop her from missing home, she made a note to give her parents a call or try a video chat... Though she shuddered remembering how well the last one had gone. Technology and parents were never a good mix.

The other girl seemed to hesitate at Sigga’s question. The bald teen didn’t think she was lying, at least not knowingly. In her personal experience, however, most of the people that claimed to be quickless… weren’t. She, herself, was one such example. Well, so to speak. She had often claimed to be quirkless and anyone who pressed on the subject, which they often did, got a flash of the gills on her ribcage and a proclamation that she could breathe underwater… sort of. That information had been accurate and usually satisfied most of her interrogators. Lying about the full extent of her quirk wasn’t something she did much at the academy, though. UA knew about her secondary, more practical, ability to manipulate memories so there was no point in trying to hide that fact here. At least for the most part. In short, Sigga doubted this girl’s paternal figurehead was quirkless. As to whether or not he was a diplomat?... That was a vague enough career title that the fish girl would give the other student the benefit of the doubt. It wasn’t entirely all that important to her in either case.
Sigga’s eyebrows rose in confusion. There was always some give and take in any conversation, this didn’t surprise her. The question itself didn’t make sense to her. Not at first. After a brief moment’s pause, the cunning fish managed to deduce that the other girl wasn’t asking if she was a pro-hero, but rather her parents. Or maybe just her father?
“Nu-uh.” Sigga nodded in the negative. It wasn’t exactly a sensitive subject to her or anything, despite things being what they were. “My grandfather raises me.” She began. Technically true, if only for the previous three months when her life managed to right itself from the hell hole she had found herself in back in ‘Merica. “-I mean, outside of here.” the girl continued, gesturing vaguely around them. Her grandfather wasn’t on campus. He was all the way back on Hokkaido. “He wasn’t ever a pro-hero either, though. At least I don’t think so…” Sigga’s brow furrowed a little at the thought. She had found a rather elaborate outfit-costume thingy last month hidden in her grandfather’s attic. That didn’t really mean anything though. And she hadn’t exactly mentioned her discovery to him in any case. She finished punctuating her explanation with what some might consider a rather interesting fact. “He’s a goat farmer.”
